The Yankees announced today that they have recalled right-hander Yerry De los Santos to the active roster. Righty Carlos Carrasco has been designated for assignment as the corresponding move. The club’s 40-man roster count drops to 39.
Carrasco, 38, signed a minor league deal with the Yankees in the offseason. The Yankee rotation took a number of hits during spring training, with Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil and JT Brubaker starting the season on the IL with significant injuries. That allowed Carrasco to crack the Opening Day roster. He has made six starts and two relief appearances so far this year, allowing 5.91 earned runs per nine innings. His 7% walk rate is good but he only punched out 17.6% of batters faced.
The health situation hasn’t improved much for the Yankees and has in fact gotten worse. Since Opening Day, Marcus Stroman has joined Cole, Gil and Brubaker on the IL. Clarke Schmidt also battled some flank soreness last week, though he managed to avoid the IL.
However, the Yanks feel they no longer need Carrasco on the roster. It’s possible that’s due to the schedule, as they have four off-days over the rest of this month, including two in the next nine days. That might put a little less pressure on the staff. It’s also possible that Carrasco has been jumped on the depth chart by Ryan Yarbrough. The lefty has been working a long relief role for the Yankees, with 19 1/3 innings over nine appearances. He has a 3.72 ERA, 22.2% strikeout rate and 11.1% walk rate in that time.
The current rotation consists of Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, Will Warren and Schmidt. With the off-days, they may be able to ride with a four-man group for a while, perhaps with Yarbrough making a spot start. Allan Winans is also stretched out in Triple-A and could be recalled to contribute at some point.
The club’s plans should become more clear in the coming days. Regardless, Carrasco is bumped off the roster today. Carrasco’s numbers this year haven’t been great but it’s possible he can still find interest from a club looking for a veteran to eat innings. Players like José Ureña, Casey Lawrence and Ian Anderson have been bouncing around the league recently, with some with gassed pitching staffs looking for relief.
Carrasco has a lengthy track record of big league success but hasn’t been at the same level in recent years, which is why he had to settle for a minor league deal coming into 2025. Dating back to the start of 2023, he has logged 225 2/3 innings for the Mets, Guardians and Yankees. In that time, he has a 6.14 ERA and 17.9% strikeout rate, though his 8.1% walk rate and 44.9% ground ball rate in that span are close to average.

It’s about time. Also, trade Devin now. He can’t handle New York. I don’t need another Sonny Gray.
And to think, the Yankees changed their no facial hair policy to accommodate this guy. And he and his Airbender pitch can go pitch for the Marlins or the Twins. #edwhitson
LOL if he gets picked up by the Mets and he suddenly becomes productive again…
They wouldn’t cut him. They’d trade him.
The Yankees have lost five games from the eight inning forward. Williams was involved in all five. Not going as planned h less he’s a sleeper agent for the rest of the AL East!
He’s got little to no trade value.
You Yankee lovers are all the same. Wow.
Never happy. And very impatient.
That’s crazy talk. He’s not hurt and was dominant as recently as last year. He’s not fetching a stud but definitely could land an organizational top 10 guy or a change of scenery player.
The Mets will give you Marte for him. The Yankees would love to have Sonny Gray right now.
Gray wants no part of the Yankees cos he got booed off the mound in The Bronx when he was wearing pinstripes.
Of course, you think Yankees would take on
twice the salary for a guy that is cooked in Marte.
If you want the Yankees to give up a proven elite closer after one bad month, then send Soto (one bad month and .260 average) for him no?
The Yankees can’t afford Soto. Maybe Siri is more what they can afford if Marte is too expensive for them. To be honest I would prefer the Yankees keep running Williams out there. It’s been very enjoyable to watch.
The Yankees can afford Soto. He decided to sign with the Mets. More money, more benefits, family atmosphere, brighter future…whatever he says the reason was today.
Though later he said he didn’t have the same lineup protection. Should have kept quiet there to not offend his new teammates.
Don’t really know why he signed, but he left and the team has moved on. Best of luck to him except when he plays the Yankees.
Trade Devin back to NL central to his Missouri home. Helsley for Williams, LaLane and another mid range Yankee prospect. Yanks upgrade from the headcase, Williams settles back in, and the Cards pick up some pitching for the future. Heck, throw in Matz and about 5m.
Or Ed Whitson…
Fi-na-lly……
Cookie is cooked…
Terrible for 4 of the last 5 seasons. The end. Mercy.
Cookie looks absolutely toast
I’m guessing Alan Winans is coming up when Carrasco’s rotation spot comes back around
@Ronk – Agreed. Hopefully they find some depth as Winans hasn’t been good in his MLB time.
Messinger at AAA doesn’t look like he can help as he struggles to get through 5 in AAA. Cam Schlitter at AA looks promising but everyone else is injured or on rehab (Hampton, Selvidge, Vrieling) or in lower levels to help now.
It’s great to give up on someone after a month…this is in response to trading Devin Williams comment
“To give up..after a month”…Exactly. If the Yankees had any stones, they’d wait until they’re in last place and their season is totally lost to “give up” on anyone. “Smart” teams will always tank their season to show confidence in their players.
So you’d rather “sell low” on the guy? Check out his last 3 seasons stats before you decide.
That cuts both ways. If you think he can revert, then you keep him. But if he continues to pitch badly, his value will continue to go down.
Williams has 5+ years of complete dominance as a reliever.
Let me hear your justification of how it is “smart” to send him packing after one bad month. Go ahead. I’m sure its really, really smart.
I’ll even give you 2 justifications: Yankees have Luke Weaver and Fernando Cruz, Nick.
Don’t the Yankees need more than 2 relievers. I have always heard more is better.
Ya and what u gonna say when Luke weaver starts cracking he’s got no track record to close but your so quick to move on from Devin lol
Relievers are the most volatile players in baseball. Also, when a player gets the yips, it matters not what his past stats are. His past stats cant pitch for him
@MLB fan – Keep in mind where Judge was after one month last year. One month of Carrasco and one month of Williams can’t be judged the same. Williams has more recent and much longer stretch of elite success.
Normally, I’d agree, but I’ve watched all of Williams appearances and he’s like a deer in the headlights. He can’t handle New York. And I don’t even blame Williams anymore. He is what he is. I blame the Yankees for being so stubborn that they keep allowing him to lose games.
@Badfinger – They let Holmes blow 13 saves last year yet still kept throwing him out three. I’m guessing they’ll give Williams more chances past one month given his track record of elite success.
World of difference between Carrasco and Williams here. Carrasco was always going to be on the bubble for a roster spot unless he’d actually found a fountain of youth and pitched like he did in his prime to start the year.
Thanks, Scott. Let us know how long to keep running him out there. Should I refinance my home?
End of the line for Cookie Carrasco?
And take Stroman with you. Ahahahahaha!
But, but… 4.34 SIERA! Just a bit above the league average of 3.91. And league average BABIP is .287, and his BABIP is .320, so he’s getting a bit unlucky too.
/s
Next step for him is likely to be retirement from baseball.
“Next step..retirement from baseball”.. The “Savannah Bananas” are casting for their upcoming summer remake of “The Natural”.
If “Cookie” can showcase well at this weekend’s Tri-City “Dance Off”, he could be rostered in time for their expected summer release date.
Carrasco is a good soldier and a fine gentleman. But think this is the end of the line.
thought they would send warren down to get his head straight but it’s hard to argue that yarbrough is any worse than cookie
Unfortunately this Cookie went stale after spring training
Will anyone admit that I was right? I said he was the worst pitcher in baseball and the Yankees were making a big mistake putting him into the rotation. Many commentors called me an idiot and a moron for saying that. Sometimes it gets tiring of being right so much
There’s worse pitchers out there, so you’re not right, and I’m not surprised you’ve been banned before, as sometimes it gets tiring of seeing you in the comments.
Many commentors called me an idiot and a moron
====================
Are you sure it was for the Carrasco remarks, or one of your other remarks?
I looked thru two Carrasco threads and did not see a comment by you.
I give Carrasco a lot more credit than Devon Williams. I wish Carrasco well and am grateful for his services.
Cookie was in the Rotation because the Yankees refused to upgrade the Rotation via trade or free agency after the Cole injury. The Yankees can’t seem to draft and develop, and pitchers that guarantee 6 innings every game. They also refuse to spend more on free agents. They reached a limit and are now counting every penny. Warren, the same way doesn’t guarantee 6 innings. The BP is cooked by August because of it.
They did develop Richard Fitts but they traded him & Weissert to Boston for Alex Verdugo…haha
They also developed most of the Soto package. They’re not out of money, Hal refuses to spend more. Same result but two totally different things…
Pittsburgh has pitching, make a deal they need bat’s!
Okay, Skenes for Judge!!!! What team says No.
Really!? On a real note, they do have some mlb ready arms.
Tigers have lots of great pitching. Do you have a right hand batting power hitting 3b to trade?
I’m just here for the silly, whiney Yankee fan comments. Cannot say I’m disappointed.
Marcus Stroman is such a pos he had his “mystery ailment” with the Cubs when he started getting pummeled thank the lord he opted out what a phony overhyped clown
NOOOO RIP cookie !
That’s the way the Cookie crumbles.
@Well. DJL for Skubal, let’s make a deal.
