The Angels announced today that infielder Yoán Moncada has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to right knee inflammation. Right-hander Robert Stephenson landed on the 15-day IL due to right biceps inflammation, retroactive to May 31st. The Halos didn’t provide any information about how long either player is expected to be out of action. Outfielder Matthew Lugo and righty Sam Aldegheri were recalled to take the two vacated active roster spots.
Moncada, 30, signed with the Halos this offseason on a one-year deal which pays him $5MM. He has been excellent when he’s been on the field. He has stepped to the plate 113 times over 30 games. His 28.3% strikeout rate is high but he has six home runs and has drawn walks at a strong 11.5% clip. His .237/.336/.505 batting line translates to a 135 wRC+, indicating he’s been 35% better than league average at the plate overall.
But as has often been the case with Moncada, injuries have gotten in the way. He hasn’t played more than 104 games in a season since 2021 due to various ailments. He only got into 12 contests last year due to an adductor strain. He already missed almost a month this year due to a thumb sprain and now this knee issue has him on the shelf again.
It’s a bit of a double blow for the Halos, who are struggling to hang in the American League playoff race. They are 26-32, ahead of just three American League clubs and five games back of the final Wild Card spot. Losing Moncada will hurt their ability to stay in the race. Shortstop Zach Neto is the only position player on the team with a higher wins above replacement tally this year, in the eyes of FanGraphs. If they fall back in the race, Moncada would be one of their more interesting trade chips, though each injury compounds his injury-prone reputation and hurts his trade value.
With Moncada ailing in recent days, the Halos have had Luis Rengifo move from second to third with Scott Kingery taking over the keystone. That could perhaps be their regular alignment while Moncada is out, with Kevin Newman and Chris Taylor also on hand.
For Stephenson, it’s a frustrating setback. He signed a three-year, $33MM deal going into 2024 but required Tommy John surgery in April of last year, before he even got a chance to throw a pitch for the Angels. He recovered from that surgery and was reinstated from the IL a few days ago. But in his second appearance, which was on Friday, he departed after just three pitches with an apparent injury.
The Angels’ bullpen has a collective 6.04 earned run average, worse than every club in the majors except for the Athletics. Ideally, Stephenson’s return would have strengthened the group. In the second half of 2023, he was one of the best relievers on the planet. With the Rays, he threw 38 1/3 innings with a 2.35 ERA, 42.9% strikeout rate and 5.7% walk rate. That prompted the Angels to give him a hefty deal but he hasn’t been able to give them a return on that investment yet and that won’t change for a few more weeks at least.

California: Fans on the south side of Chicago plus those in Colorado and Pittsburgh share that sentiment about their owners.
Same with the Pohlads in Minnesota and Fisher in West Sacramento.
Be careful what you wish for says Orioles fans.
Many O’s fans are glad that the Angelos family are gone, what do you mean, (not) Dave Chalk?
I warned Os fans when this sale happened.
Sorry Gary, O’s fans were tired of the Angelos family. A lot of them would rather take this gut-punch of a first year with Rubinstein than another 25 with the Angelos again.
Angels are a .448 team without a winning season in 10 years. Yet, the average home attendance so far this season is 33,842.
Arte is getting richer and that is all Arte cares about. He has no responsibility to the community and no incentive to sell. He said in an interview this year that he would only sell if someone made him a stupidly high overpay offer.
How do you get fans to stop coming to Angels games? It’s not like they can play worse, because more people will probably show up. Angel fans who want a change must start petitioning at Disneyland or outside other tourist spots in the area and try to persuade MLB fans not to show up. Put ads out in national newspapers, something.
For Arte Moreno The Angels are just a tax right off for all his other investments. He just bought 22 acres to develop in Arizona when the team was up for sale. He probably could’ve got close to $3 billion. Not Arte been lucky to get $1 billion Angel fan we are Waiting for Father time to intervene ☠️
Another twist and turn in Stephenson’s Jekyll and Hyde season. Literary joke!
Marooned with his $33M on Treasure Island
I don’t think Stephenson is physically cut out to pitch, unfortunate because he’s nasty when he does pitch.
Aldegheri is a lefty*
Stephenson is in fine Angels form get one inning in and take a long break. Did he attend How to Vacation 201 the advance course taught by Anthony Rendon.
Anderson, Stephenson, Jansen, Kikuchi. Angels overpay for pitching and just hope for the best. Like a step above the Rockies when it comes to building a staff. At least the Rockies can always fall back on the altitude excuse.
Angels are a staircase above the Rockies. I don’t get how you can closely compare the Angels and Rockies, unless you don’t like Jansen or Kikuchi for some reason.
Kikuchi and Jansen have taken huge steps back when looking at their underlying numbers and are overpaid. Both teams can’t develop pitching and overpay to get pitchers. It may be a large step above the Rockies, but the Angels are still bottom of the barrel when it comes to pitching and pitching development.
Zero surprise about either.
Stephenson is a near Rendon level signing.
His first year was pretty much for free. It gave the Angels a 2.5 million option for 2027.
Hard to call it at this point.
I recently saw a stupid article that suggested that the Yankees trade for Yoan
So many lame articles on the internet
I do not understand, nor do I agree with, anyone who claims that Arte Moreno does not care about winning, that Arte does not care about his team or his fans, or that Arte only cares about selfishly caring only about making money for himself. Comparing Arte to other owners such as the Athletics, Marlins, Pirates, etc. is wrong. Unlike the owners of teams that do not win, and even some of the teams that do compete for postseason play, Arte has given out some of the most lucrative, long term contracts in MLB history. .
GO – It is provable history that while Moreno has spent a lot of money on contracts, they have all been for over the hill hitters like Pujols, Hamilton, Rendon, et al. The Angels have needed to build a pitching staff for over a decade. Every year, after Moreno blows his personal payroll cap on bats, his GM is forced to piece together a pitching staff consisting of guys who are AAA level at best or guys hoping to bounce back to a once mediocre pitching career. Moreno, a marketing guy, knows that fans prefer that action of homeruns over the non-action of no-hitters. But at the end of the season, pitching wins championships. So here we are with a decade of sub-.500 seasons under our belt.
Prov356, you made some good points. Let me counter with this, most Angels fans aren’t patient enough to allow the Angels to build the team up with a young core. Dana, is just 21 years old. But because he didn’t come up pitching like prime Nolan Ryan, some Angels fans have given up on him already. Right now the majority of Angels fans, would trade Jo Adell straight up for Luis Robert Jr, even though Adell is a better player. Same thing with Moniak. Same fans that would be made, if the Angels trade Zack Neto, to load up the farm system, with top prospects, were the same ones, calling him a bust 2 years ago. When he initially struggled in the majors.
I just had the Adell argument with Pads Fan. Adell’s development path was the worst I’ve ever seen, but he’s been starting to hit.
He’s unlikely to ever be a big-time player, but could easily hit 30-35 HRs, if they simply let him play full-time.
angelsfan4life: “Angels fans aren’t patient enough to allow the Angels to build the team up with a young core”
You’re kidding, right? This big market team has the longest losing seasons streak in the MLB (10 years), It also has drug and bribery scandals, and a farm system that is consistently ranked as one of the worst the MLB. Yet, this season’s average home attendance is 33,842. (9th highest in the MLB).
And you blame Angels fans for not being patient enough? I can’t imagine anyone outside of the Angels PR department trying to make such a ridiculous argument.
Adell has six seasons in the big leagues and less than 1200 ABs.
Let him play. Maybe he does suck, but there are 10 Angels with a higher K%.
Who exactly have they been patient with? I don’t know a player in Angel history who has been screwed with more than Adell. You got one?
Halo11Fan: “Who exactly have they been patient with? ”
I didn’t say the organization has been patient or not patient. I think the organization is just plain underfunded and incompetent. This shows up in a lot of ways, including scouting, drafting, and player development. That’s why we have screwed up so many draft picks and prospects. The 10 years of losing and a still bankrupt farm system are proof of that.
The fans, on the other hand, don’t get a say in how the organization is run. You can blame the fans for still shelling out money in spite of Moreno’s “business model.”. But they don’t lack patience.
Just realizing that Halo11Fan probably wasn’t responding to my post about fan patience.
I’ve always liked bandwagon fans. They force the team to spend money.
I never insult them. Just because I’m stupid enough to spend my life rooting for this team doesn’t mean other people have to.
Ok let clarify, since there is some confusion. Angels fans, don’t have the patience, to allow young players to develop. Again, Dana is the latest example. Dana is just 21, years old, yet because he has struggled in the majors. Angels fans are already calling him a bust. Adell needed more time to develop, has improved, each of the past 3 seasons. Angels fans would rather have Chris Taylor, playing Center. Even though Taylor is lucky to hit the ball out of the infield at this point. Angels fans, want every prospect, to walk into the Majors and play like an All Star. Nolan Schanuel, is a contact hitter. Is playing really well. But because he isn’t going to hit a lot of homers, some Angels fans don’t like him. Angels fans were calling to sign Pete Alonso, to replace him.
Who is calling Dana a bust? He doesn’t have top of the stuff or command, but he’s going to pitching this league and have a fruitful career.
angelsbroncosfan: “Angels fans, don’t have the patience, to allow young players to develop”
Ok, let clarify your confusion. Angels fans don’t make decisions regarding drafting and developing players.
Moreno cuts corners on everything except marketing. This has resulted in an organization that is terrible at drafting and developing players. That’s how you get the longest losing seasons streak in the majors (and the resulting high draft picks), while still having one of the worst farm systems in the majors.
Some of the many Angels busts were just dumb draft picks. Some players are failing to reach potential due to the lack of a decent farm system. Some players are being rushed to the MLB because the team is hoping it will put more fans in the seats. This is what happens when your owner cuts corners on things like scouting and the farm system.
There are some good prospects in the minors but this team needs a complete rebuild. Make every player not named Neto and Ohoppe available for trade.
