The Giants and Yankees “are keeping a close eye on” Isiah Kiner-Falefa as a potential trade acquisition, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale writes. Nightengale reported two weeks ago that IKF was drawing attention from interested teams, though no clubs were specifically cited at the time.
It is worth noting that Kiner-Falefa’s bat has gone cold in the time between Nightengale’s two reports. The veteran infielder has only a .389 OPS over his last 42 plate appearances for the Pirates, and he is hitting .275/.319/.342 over 241 total PA this season, translating to an 84 wRC+. This being said, Kiner-Falefa’s offense has always been the lesser part of his value, as his quality defense and versatility has long been IKF’s calling card.
The Yankees have plenty of first-hand experience with Kiner-Falefa, who played for the team in 2022-23 first as the starting shortstop, and then in a multi-positional role once Anthony Volpe took over shortstop duties in the second of those two seasons. Re-acquiring Kiner-Falefa could reinstall him back into this utility role, with IKF providing more of an experienced hand than Oswald Peraza in a backup position.
Rumors have swirled for months that New York would be targeting infield help at the deadline, with an eye towards landing a second baseman or third baseman and then installing Jazz Chisholm Jr. at the other position. There is nothing preventing the Yankees from acquiring a clear-cut starter as well as a backup option like Kiner-Falefa, though that would further crowd a depth chart that also includes Peraza, DJ LeMahieu, and Ben Rice being toggled between first base, DH, and catcher (when starters Paul Goldschmidt, Giancarlo Stanton, and Austin Wells aren’t playing). Having plenty of depth can be a good problem to have, of course, especially since several Yankees players have checkered health histories.
San Francisco’s infield picture also got a bit more complicated with the blockbuster addition of Rafael Devers last weekend, as Devers will eventually factor into the first base picture. Third baseman Matt Chapman has missed the last two weeks with a hand sprain and is no longer wearing a split, though his return timetable remains unclear. Casey Schmitt has hit so well as Chapman’s replacement that the Giants might be able to make do while Chapman is sidelined, but adding a player like IKF would help out the depth chart as well, probably pushing Christian Koss or Brett Wisely to the minors.
Kiner-Falefa would be a pure rental piece for a new team, as the infielder is in the final season of his two-year, $15MM deal that he initially signed with the Blue Jays prior to the 2024 season. Kiner-Falefa is owed a little over $4MM remaining on his $7.5MM salary for 2025, and that initial $7.5MM number was actually around $6.28MM, as Toronto kicked in some extra money to the Pirates as part of the trade that sent IKF to Pittsburgh at last year’s trade deadline. While Kiner-Falefa’s salary is modest, even a relatively small sum could factor into the equation for a team like the Yankees that is already over the higher level of luxury tax penalization, so they’ll pay a $110% tax rate on any more salary assumed.
The Pirates certainly appear to be sellers as they approach what looks like the club’s seventh straight losing season. Kiner-Falefa is a logical trade candidate as an impending free agent, and it remains to be seen if the Bucs might wait until closer to the actual July 31 deadline to move the infielder, or if they’ll make an earlier move if a rival club makes an acceptable offer.
IKF would be valuable to essentially any team. Solid offense and damn good defense (including a gold glove) all over the damn diamond.
Solid offense? IKF has been below average offensively for every year he’s played in the majors. The only time he’s been decent was the half year he spent with Blue Jays and even then he was absolutely dreadful for the pirates the rest of the season.
For a utility guy averaging 1.1~ owar in his career (1.7 162 game average) as well as a 1.26 dwar (1.9 162 game average) he looks like solid offense for a guy that can play every position you ask him to. Lets not pretend like there aren’t plenty of position players that only play one spot on the field that are markedly worse than he is offensively.
Well hopefully the Giants monitor IKF better.
Ha ha. The SF bench isn’t the strongest so…..
Ok u must be watching a different ikf
Not a big splash but IKF will give you better utility play than Peraza.
And LuisAngel Acuna. Mets should be interested.
The Yankees already have defense first options for the infield. They definitely need a better offensive 2B or 3B than IKF. Does that or will that exist for them as an option the Yankees can afford is a different question. But IKF is not worth the time or energy looking into.(He obviously can be a good option for other teams that need the defense and versatility he offers not really trashing him as an overall player)
What plus 2bman is likely to be moved? Other than Suarez what plus 3b? If they spend any significant prospect capital it going to be for a 3-4 starter and/or impact bp arm.
I am not saying one’s available, but I am saying it’s not worth wasting anytime on a lateral move.
Ikf is a lateral move from Peraza?
I think the difference won’t move the needle.
Don’t be surprised if the Tigers look in on IKF as well. And they have a wealth of prospects to sway any deadline conversation…
The Pirates aren’t looking for prospects, they want major league ready players
While that is a 100% true statement there also has to be a reality of what a role player / end of contract player can demand. I don’t think there is a major league ready player who will help the Pirates next year (so not an expiring contract swap) that they could get in trading IKF. For the IKF’s , Fraziers, and likely Santana the return (based on Value) will be prospects likely years away. If Pirates want a player who legitimately can help the Pirates next year – that is Keller, Bubba, Bednar etc. type of trade.
If the Pirates want “MLB ready” players for a rental bench guy, they should be okay with mediocre relievers or weak hitters without options.
They aren’t going to get any MLB player of value for IKF.
Not going to get MLB ready for him! Prospects only.
Why would the Tigers want IKF? He’s a plus at nothing
Uhh…sure, Bob. Now get off my lawn.
I like IKF, but I don’t see him as a major upgrade on Yankees. I think the Yankees need to see what it would take to get Hayes for 3B and move Jazz back to second
Hayes can play gold glove 3b, but is a terrible offensive player. Unless they still see upside but it’s been several years
With the way Casey Schmitt is playing right now, I don’t think IKF is on the Giants radar as mush as Nightengale thinks.
When Chapman returns from the IL, Schmitt takes over 2B and Fitzgerald either becomes a super Ute or gets sent down for regular playing time.
Ramos and Schmidt are a great lesson in giving young guys time. It’s so good to see.
Spot on Dave & Fopp. I came to say the same. I always thought Fitz was the better utility choice with the outfield ability, and speed off the bench.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Posey and the front office are moving past Fitzgerald. He’s not hitting well, at all. He’s been awful on the basepaths. Average, at best, defense.
IKF would be a bench guy who can play all over. The Giants need offensive depth.
I think Fitzy needs some AAA time to clear his head. He’s got power but isn’t tapping into it.
I’ve been ready to give up on Schmitt a few times but his AB’s are much better than they used to be.
I’m hoping the team as a whole gets hot. With Devers there now it really could happen.
Fitzgerald is trending down badly. His OPS by month:
Mar/Apr .773
May .644
June .354
Schmitt hasn’t had much playing time, so his splits through May are small samples. But in June, when he’s gotten playing time with Chapman out, his OPS for the month is .883.
Things could change, but right now I think Schmitt has to take over the every day 2B position when Chapman returns. I have to admit I was skeptical of Schmitt’s value, but pleasantly surprised with his production so far.
Good to see you coming around on Casey. Plate discipline, approach was the biggest issue in the past for you as I recall. He’s getting it figured out with playing time now, and the defense has always been a plus. Let’s just hope he doesn’t get homer happy like Fitz.
100%. So much calmer. I think it was yesterday he took 5 pitches to get it to 3 and 2 and then ripped no. 6 for a single.
I was like “Oh. That’s different”
Respectfully, as a Giants fan: not interested
As a Yankee fan who remembers him well, I’m not interested either.
Adames is your for at least a few more seasons. He got paid and forgot how to hit.
Homered today, so…
He is trending up.
Yup. Now if we can just get Lee to quit hitting atom balls. Great contact but few finding holes of late.
Pirates should trade with Yankees. Rarely do they get the wool pulled over their eyes
Yankees can have Kiner and the Giants can have Falefa
A Solomon-like decision.
What exactly is there to monitor? Is he going to cost a bucket of balls or a bag of big league chew…
Yeah, I think they can’t expect anything more than someone like that guy, what’s his name, Cash something?
IKF likes playing everyday, why would the Pirates trade the guy who likes being in Pittsburgh, a guy that will sign a good deal and play hard, isnt this the the type of player they want to sign for a few seasons?
Adam Frazier having a great season in Pittsburgh too, likes to play everyday, has been a big part of their offense. Joey Bart is another great player for the Pirates.
Their offense is worst in the league. I am thinking we have very different definitions of ‘great’. Frazier has been a pleasant surprise but is no where near an offensive force. Bart has no power this year. I like the players but none of the three you listed are remotely difference makers therefore should not be any where near the top of any priority to sign list. I’ll exclude Bart some as he and Davis may form a decent catching tandem but he is also not a free agent for many years.
Not enough Bat for the Giants.
IDFK about IKF
As a casual baseball fan- how many ex Yankees have played for Pittsburgh after, especially early their career. Honest question
