Dodgers Acquire Zach Penrod From Red Sox, Transfer Roki Sasaki To 60-Day IL

By Steve Adams | June 20, 2025 at 2:50pm CDT

2:50pm: The Dodgers have made it official, announcing that they acquired Penrod in exchange for cash considerations. Right-hander Roki Sasaki has been transferred to the 60-day injured list as the corresponding active roster move. Sasaki has been on the IL since mid-May due to a shoulder impingement. He can be reinstated 60 days from that initial IL placement, which would be mid-July. He was recently shut down from throwing and has an uncertain timeline.

1:37pm: The Dodgers and Red Sox have agreed to a trade that’ll send left-hander Zach Penrod from Boston to Los Angeles, reports Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. The Sox designated Penrod for assignment earlier this week in the wake of the Rafael Devers blockbuster, as they were acquiring two 40-man players (Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison) and only trading away one.

Penrod, 28, is an interesting story. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Rangers in 2018 and pitched briefly in their system before being cut loose during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He then spent three years pitching in the independent Pioneer League before catching the eyes of Red Sox scouts and returning to affiliated ball.

A nice minor league showing across multiple levels in 2024 pushed Penrod up onto the 40-man roster. He tossed 62 2/3 frames across three levels and logged a 4.16 ERA with a huge 34.8% strikeout rate but a similarly hefty 12.4% walk rate. The Sox summoned him to the majors in the season’s second half, and he pitched four innings down the stretch, holding opponents to a run on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

Penrod was in the mix for a bullpen spot heading into the 2025 season, but an elbow injury in spring training knocked him out for nearly three months. He returned to the mound in late May and has pitched 7 1/3 minor league innings. It’s been a mixed bag. He’s allowed four runs and only seven hits while punching out nine of 36 batters (25%). However, he’s also issued seven walks, plunked a batter and tossed three wild pitches.

Command has never been a particularly strong suit, but it’s also understandable if there’s some rust after he was initially diagnosed with elbow inflammation in late February and didn’t get back onto a mound in a game setting until May 24. Penrod’s 95 mph average fastball this year is a match for his 2024 mark, and he’s posted a huge 15% swinging-strike rate after logging a even more-impressive 16.6% mark in that regard during last year’s minor league run.

Penrod will give the Dodgers a hard-throwing lefty with clear bat-missing ability and, as critically, a full slate of three minor league option years remaining. Los Angeles churns through the final few spots of its bullpen as much as — if not more than — any other team in the sport, so flexible arms with Penrod’s general skill set are always going to be somewhat appealing to the Dodgers.

Given lack of details so far it’s likely cash considerations… maybe if you’re lucky it’s a 3 team deal with LA getting brasier shipped to fenway for us, but, don’t hold out hope

The cash will be in quid-not dollars-per Henry’s request.

I found it humorous that GAsoxcan seemed to get defensive over the mildly teasing comment I made about Henry apparent caring more about his Liverpool team.

That makes no sense…. Braiser would require another 40 man roster spot… which is the reason why Penrod DFA’d

Cooper, it’s an inside joke for Olm… he’s got a love for brasier, both he and the missus… it’s not a serious proposal, but, you’ve got to read a lot of red sox threads here frequently to see the running jokes

It’s the wrong link, see below.

MLBTR can’t control the initial player link to BBRef, it’s automated and just picks the most recent player with that name. But they’re usually good about fixing it once the commenters point it out.

Question… How many more poor starts from Buehler before Cora removes him from the rotation?. I must admit I thought highly of this signing. I thought he was all the way back from his injury while watching him in the playoffs for the Dodgers . The timeline seemed correct. One of the many major disappointments of this Sox season.

cdc – I think there are a few factors involved. If all the other SP’s perform well going forward and Buehler continues to perform poorly, I think he could lose his job when Houck returns which shouldn’t be too long from now.

Losing his job could entail a bullpen demotion or a phantom injury. They aren’t going to rush into a straight out release, not with that contract of his.

Hey what do you think of the Sox putting job applicants through 5 rounds of AI interviews? I can understand the first round and maybe the second round, but not further.

Here’s the thing they obviously don’t get: Job interviews aren’t just the employer learning about the applicant. Interviews are also supposed to be a chance for the applicants to meet and evaluate those with the employer who are involved in the hiring process. I would never consider working for an employer without seeing and speaking with actual people.

Placing Dobbins on IL may give him additional leeway and more bad news about Crawford. Sucks about Crawford, 33 starts, 180+ innings,4.3 era I will take those numbers from a 4/5 starter every season. So disappointed in Buehler.
The AI thing.all I know is what I heard on the radio,it’s very strange. They did say other teams also may employ that kind of service. I don’t really care about the hiring process. It does seem to show that the Sox depend on analytics on and off the field, I guess.

cdc – The thing with Crawford was so bizarre. He had the knee injury nearly all of last season, why was he pushed to an MLB-leading 33 starts? Now that it’s turned into a wrist injury he could be out for quite some time. Let’s hope the remaining starters stay healthy, unlike the Dodgers.

The Dodgers are amazing. The old saying ‘ you can never have enough pitching ” certainly holds true. How many teams could suffer losses to the pitching staff like the Dodgers have and not only be in contention but are still favorites to win W.S. !??! Crazy .. Deep pocket owner, just bought the Lakers.

Buehler was exceptionally bad last night. Given a 3 run lead that should have been 4. ( don’t know why Abreu was not already on 2nd, terrible base running) ,he could not find the plate. If I’m Cora ,he gets 1 more start to prove himself worthy Bad pitching, bad defense and bad base running=bad baseball.

cdc – I thought about your post while watching the game last night. LOL!

Okay this is an example of me noticing and knowing too much …… he was staying at his Dad’s home in SoCal and I noticed he was yawning on the mound last night.

Perhaps family/friends kept him up late? Just seems odd that he would be tired at 6;30PM local time.

I also wonder if Cora knew he hadn’t slept, and that’s why he intentionally left him on the mound during the meltdown …. didn’t even get a reliever warming in the pen.

Maybe Buehler drank a 5-hour energy drink after the first inning? He did pitch very well in the 2nd & 3rd inning.

Why shouldnt they? Even though they have a playoff caliber team, they have randos calling for boycotts to Fenway all the time. Might as well grab some cash in other places to feed back into the farm system.

      Why
Crazy to think 3 out of the 4 free agent pitchers I wanted the Sox to sign are now on the 60 day injury list. Sasaki, Snell and Burnes. Max Fried is the only one presently playing. This certainly will give not just the Sox front office but every teams pause. Is the risk worth it ? I know injuries to pitchers happen frequently, but that was the class of the free agent market last off-season.

I’m tired of pitching these pitchers with sub-standard command. Dodgers used to have pitching rotations that limited free passes. But since 2024, it’s been a different story. Sure, the biggest contributor are the injuries and having to fill those slots with scrub pitchers. But would be nice to have more pitchers who can throw strikes and command pitches.
