Right-hander Jesse Chavez has elected free agency after being outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. That indicates he cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week.
Chavez, 41, has been on and off Atlanta’s roster this year. Three separate times, they have signed him to a minor league deal, selected him to the roster and then bumped him off after a brief stint. His most recent selection was on July 6th. A little over a week later, he was designated for assignment when Atlanta acquired Dane Dunning from the Rangers.
Around those transactions, Chavez has tossed eight innings over four appearances. He has allowed eight earned runs on 14 hits and five walks while striking out eight opponents. He has also logged 30 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level with a 2.05 earned run average, 28.8% strikeout rate, 9.6% walk rate and 37.3% ground ball rate.
Chavez will now have a chance to speak with all 30 clubs, though he always seems to find his way back to Atlanta. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the two sides reunite on a fresh minor league deal in the coming days. The club is lined up to be a deadline seller in the rest of the month. Closer Raisel Iglesias seems likely to move while guys like Rafael Montero, Pierce Johnson or Aaron Bummer could be on the move as well. That could open up some more major league opportunities for Chavez or other pitchers down the stretch.

He will eventually be back with the Braves.
By tomorrow.
He’s already resigned. Tomorrow he gets called back up to ATL
The young guys might as well call him Coach.
You might be onto something
I think it would be a great idea for the Braves to sign him as a coach.
Chavez just has to be ready to officially move into that role.
start the timer, he’ll be back in atlanta within 48 hours
jesse only does this to keep the meme going
I wonder where he’ll sign
He can’t quit them
If only Japan had a Japanese team called the braves like they do the giants.
See you on the 2029 roster!
And then immediately signed a minor league deal with the Braves
Jessie’s girl
I wish that I had Jessie’s girl
Where can I find a woman like that?
Jessie’s Girl is Brian Snitker with hair!
🎶Baby come back…🎶
@Bart: The one hit wonder band Player. Went to see them while I was in college (1979.) They played a little club called the Exit/In. Popular, trendy little spot near Vandy. Also saw Steve Martin there a couple of years earlier.
@Jeff, I believe Player would now fall comfortably into the Yacht Rock genre. And seeing Steve Martin doing standup in the 1970s is a very cool memory.
My best in that regard was seeing Spinsl Tap live at the Tower Theater in 1992. Fun times.
Looks like he saw Robertson’s deal…
Somebody should sign him just so they can get something in return for him when the braves come calling at the trade deadline lol
Raise your hand. If you still knew Jessie Chavez was still in the league
If you follow MLBTR you for sure see his name more than most others…

Probably sick of travelling to Gwinnett
Has to be something of a local legend there by now…
Jesse is the GOAT of Braves Ups and Downs.
‘G’rinding ‘O’ver ‘A’tlanta ‘T’raffic!!
‘G’winnett ‘O’nly ‘A’tlanta ‘T’ired of him
“Probably sick of traveling”…Gwinnett? Are you serious? Jesse Chavez is a longtime veteran who has friends and clout within the Braves organization.
Jesse Chavez spends his time between Braves stints down at the plush, downtown Sheraton hotel. Jesse’s room service and bell hop shenanigans are the stuff of urban legend.

Serious question: when a guy like this continues to opt out and re-sign with the same club, what is the player or club gaining when it’s all mid-season/pro-rated, etc. versions of what can’t be much different terms of salary and benefits, etc.?
“Serious question..when a guy..or club gaining”..Depth without allocating a full time roster spot, would be my answer.
Essentially a player good enough to use but who can be easily discarded when no longer needed. In other words, a 27th man or roster spot.
Jesse Chavez is STILL PITCHING?
Not for 48 hours.
Must be pure love of the game for Chavez. The Braves are terrible, so Chavez has no chance to pitch in a meaningful game. And he’s made $25+ million in the league. Making league minimum now ($760k) but only getting a pro-rated amount when he’s with the team (roughly $4,000 each day he’s with the Braves; $760k divided by the 187 days on the seasonal calendar). So for all of the hassle of signing and getting DFA’ed, he’s made around $16,000. Good money for people like us but seems like not much considering Chavez’s career earnings. He could make more as a coach.
The Braves are too sentimental when it comes to Chavez he obviously don’t have it anymore so they just need to let him go and quit bringing him back.
You have to give Jesse one sure thing, he knows how to get paid for being an aging pitcher. Also the retort to the person saying he’s not making anything, nine times out of ten, you enjoy your time more as you get older just being around the guys AND getting paid for it.
He’ll be back.
Probably for the better. Teams want relief pitching so maybe Chavez lands with a contender.
