Mariners Acquire Josh Naylor

By Anthony Franco | July 24, 2025 at 11:58pm CDT

The Mariners and Diamondbacks made the first significant move of deadline season on Thursday evening. Seattle acquired first baseman Josh Naylor for rookie left-hander Brandyn Garcia and pitching prospect Ashton Izzi. Naylor and Garcia are each on the 40-man roster, so no additional moves were required in that regard. The D-Backs recalled Tristin English to fill the spot on the active roster.

Naylor hasn’t gotten quite the same amount of deadline hype as now former teammate Eugenio Suárez, whose power barrage makes him the top impending free agent hitter available. The 28-year-old first baseman is having a strong year in his own right, though. Naylor is hitting .292/.360/.447 with 11 homers in nearly 400 trips to the dish. He has even chipped in a career-high 11 stolen bases in 13 attempts. There may not have been a better left-handed rental bat on the market.

The former first-round pick is on the move for the second time in seven months. The Diamondbacks acquired Naylor from Cleveland for starting pitcher Slade Cecconi and the 70th overall draft pick over the winter. It was a more affordable means of addressing first base than re-signing Christian Walker, who secured a three-year contract that paid $20MM annually from the Astros. While Naylor doesn’t provide the same Gold Glove defense that Walker offers, he has been a well above-average hitter for a fourth straight season. Last year’s career-best 31 home runs looks like an outlier, but he has cut his strikeout rate to a personal-low 12.4% clip and should hit between 15-20 homers.

Seattle has long had a reputation as a team that desperately needs offense to complement a loaded pitching staff. That has been true in prior seasons but is not so much the case this year. The Mariners rank sixth in home runs and 10th in runs scored. They’re middle-of-the-pack in batting average and rank among the top ten in both on-base percentage and slugging. That’s no small feat for a team that plays its home games at the extremely pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park. Seattle has an MLB-best .270 batting average and .346 OBP on the road, and only the Brewers and Cubs have scored more runs away from home.

Naylor deepens the group. He’ll take the everyday first base job from Luke Raley, who should see most of his time in right field. Dominic Canzone has been on fire since Seattle recalled him from Triple-A on June 9. He now projects as a bench bat, though he could also get into the lineup at designated hitter if the Mariners feel comfortable using Jorge Polanco a little more frequently between second and third base.

That’s all dependent on what other moves Seattle has in store. Earlier this week, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reported that the Mariners considered a reunion with Suárez to be their top deadline priority, even more so than the idea of adding Naylor. The Mariners will reportedly continue to push to add Suárez as well. He’s a cleaner positional fit — he’d be a massive upgrade at third base over Ben Williamson — but the Diamondbacks will command a better return than they received for Naylor.

That also demonstrates that the M’s are working with greater financial flexibility than they had over the offseason, as has been reported by multiple Seattle beat writers in recent weeks. Naylor is playing on a $10.9MM salary, nearly $4MM of which the Mariners are taking on. Suárez is owed more than $5MM of his $15MM salary. The Mariners have fallen six games back of the Astros in the AL West, but they’re clearly willing to invest as they try to at least lock down a Wild Card berth.

This is the first of multiple dominoes to fall for the Diamondbacks. Any hope they had of avoiding a sell-off when they swept the Cardinals coming out of the All-Star Break is gone. They negated the St. Louis series by getting swept at home by Houston earlier this week. They’re back to three games below .500 and 5.5 out of a playoff spot with four teams to jump. The front office is resigned to the unlikelihood of closing that gap with an injury-riddled pitching staff.

Arizona is prioritizing controllable pitching in their deadline returns. They get a pair of young arms in their first deal of the summer. Garcia, 25, should jump right into the big league bullpen. The 6’4″ southpaw was just promoted to the big leagues on Monday. He has pitched twice, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks while recording one strikeout. He’s averaging 97 MPH on his sinker and has two distinct breaking pitches — a mid-80s sweeper and a cutter/slider that sits in the upper 80s.

Garcia was Seattle’s 11th-round pick out of Texas A&M in 2023. He ranked 13th among Seattle prospects at MLB Pipeline and 19th at Baseball America. Both outlets credit him with a promising sinker-slider combination. Garcia’s lack of a viable changeup and fringe command pushed him to the bullpen for the first time this season. John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM reports that the D-Backs also view him as a reliever and don’t intend to build him back up to start. Garcia has combined for a 3.51 ERA with a 28.2% strikeout rate and elevated 11.4% walk percentage in 32 appearances between the top two minor league levels.

Izzi, 21, is a long-term development play. Seattle took him in the fourth round of the 2022 draft out of an Illinois high school. He pitched well in Low-A last season but has struggled to a 5.51 ERA across 12 starts in High-A this year. He has punched out a quarter of batters faced with a reasonable 9.7% walk rate, suggesting there’s some poor fortune in that earned run average. The 6’3″ right-hander ranked 13th among Seattle farmhands at Baseball America and 16th at MLB Pipeline. He has a mid-90s fastball and the chance for a three-pitch mix that could allow him to stick as a starter if his command continues to develop.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic first reported that the Mariners were acquiring Naylor. ESPN’s Jeff Passan had Garcia and Izzi going back to Arizona. Respective images courtesy of Denis Poroy and Joe Nicholson, Imagn Images.

Not where Naylor wanted to go given the history of Seattle being a pitcher friendly stadium. At least he knows he won’t have the QO tag as a free agent.

Not necessarily true. Naylor has 4 Home Runs in 17 games in Seattle, which is only 1 fewer than he had in 42 more games at Chase Field

dewey – I know a lot of people expected the Sox to acquire Naylor because of their first base situation, I think this is the first hint they aren’t planning to GFIN.

Rsox – Here’s the thing, Chase Field and T-Mobile Park have identical 90 Park Factors for HR.

But overall Park Factor it’s no contest, Chase Field is the 4th-most hitter friendly park in MLB and T-Mobile is the least hitter friendly.

The prospects the Mariners got are nothing special, the Red Sox could easily have matched that. Need a 1B and a front line SP if they want to contend this year.

The bullpen hasn’t been perfect, but overall has been tossing up some mighty impressive numbers. Chapman is a horse.

That said, it’s historically not nearly as bad for LHH. I don’t know the most immediate years’ RF v. LF splits, but in the past it would even play slightly favorable (a consistent wind comes in from LF and out to RF).

While I think Naylor would have been a fantastic fit for Fenway (in the Wade Boggs, Bill Mueller, “pepper” LD Lefty mold), there are other 1B options in play.

I, for example, am a bit surprised the M’s got Naylor and not the Orioles’ O’Hearn as the latter fits a bigger RHB need and can plug-in-play between COF/ 1B/ DH more.

But I’ll still like it as an M’s fan; especially if it happened like that because the price was better and/ or the Snakes were just willing to pull the trigger faster.

New – You don’t understand what a salary dump is, which is fine …. I’m happy to explain it to you.

It’s when a team wants to get out from under a contract so badly that they are willing to take virtually nothing of value in return. They are required to get back at least one player though, as MLB doesn’t allow teams to trade players of great value for cash only.

Examples of salary dumps would be Stanton to the Yankees, Beckett/AGon/Crawford to the Dodgers, etc.

Wait – I agree 100%! I think I read somewhere the Sox did make an offer for Naylor, but it was definitely a lowball … hence the first sign that they may not really be GFIN at the deadline. The Sox did confirm they are prioritizing pitching.

I am very comfortable with the bullpen, even if Slaten and Liam don’t return. As long as Chapman, Whitlock, Wilson and Bernie don’t tire out it should remain solid. Sure I’d like another arm, but only if it’s an impact one.

They need a fourth quality arm to plug in behind Crochet, Bello, and Giolito. Buehler is not back – all smoke and mirrors at this stage and likely to continue pitching to a 5+ ERA. Nor do I have confidence in Fitts or Harrison to be a playoff starter this year.

They need a quality arm, not Morton. Morton was good through 2021, but we’ve seen four years since that are less compelling. I guess he would be cheap, but the Red Sox need talent to contend. Cheap acquisitions don’t move the needle.

Why didnt you just Google it?

AI review: It’s a widely held belief among baseball fans and analysts that the dimensions of Safeco Field (now T-Mobile Park) during Adrian Beltre’s time with the Seattle Mariners negatively impacted his home run totals.
Safeco Field was known for being a pitchers’ park, particularly challenging for right-handed hitters trying to hit balls out to the left-field power alley. The distances to the power alleys in left-center field (which went from 390 feet to 378 feet after the 2012 season) and right-center field (which went from 385 feet to 381 feet) were relatively deep compared to many other ballparks.

        Not really a “fire sale”.

AZ is cashing in some of its trade chips to the highest bidder and getting multiple talented prospects and young players in return for esch trade.
AZ, as far as we know is not in financial
distress, not completely tearing down the team, not throwing producing players with many years og team control under the bus etc..

When I read/here the term ” fire sale”
it implies desperation in trading everything that dumping contracts in desperation and not caring about the return of quality players.

Does not seem to be the case with AZ.

dewey – Right you are! Bregman can’t run, and with every game he plays he’s probably aggravating the injury even more.

His selfishness is hurting the team. With the exception of the pinch hit 3-run HR, he hasn’t done crap since returning. In the 27 PA’s he’s batting just .222 with a .593 OPS. He needs to go back on the IL and Mayer should play every day.

Speaking of Mayer, he had an MRI on his wrist today but nothing has been said about his status. Probably not a good sign. If both he and Bregman are gonna miss time, that will mean Romy and Sogard/Hamilton filling in. Not good.

New – My comments are based on facts. Fact is Bregman cannot run hard, if he does he risks having the injury become worse.

Fact is they have stated he will not be available for one game each series until further notice. That means in essence the Sox will be playing shorthanded for approximately 33% of the games.

Fact is Bregman wants a massive new contract after this season, and him not playing jeopardizes that desire. That’s why he returned much sooner than expected. If he was already on a 6-7 year contract then he’d still be on the IL right now.

Fact is the Sox have had a very capable replacement for him in Mayer, it’s not like last year when Raffy played in pain for an extended period of time because the team needed him and there were no other viable options.

Now don’t you feel embarrassed falsely accusing me of not having any justification for my stance?

Okay your turn, provide a detailed and cogent explanation of why you feel Bregman is not wrong to insist on playing right now, and support your stance.

So far he has appeared in both of the last two games he was supposed to be unavailable for and hit a 3-run pinch hit Home Run in one of them. While it does suck that he can’t run full steam the defense is better with him out there and the lineup is too

it is a strong system, but more strong in the upper portion than in depth. This was not any of their headliner prospects, but a solid return. Honestly Garcia gets a bump as MLB ready, Teams also tend to deal a pair of top 200 prospects vs a single top 100 guy even if they would agree that is similar value- they just do not want to deal from their highly regarded guys (and these two are top 200-250 types in baseball)

@James123- I agree… to an extent. The top is obviously very strong with Emerson, Young (graduating), Montes, Ford, and Farmelo, but guys like Celesten, Sloan, Arroyo, Cijintje, Peete, Bautista, Locklear, etc. are all very interesting. I think 1-15 is pretty dang strong and deep. The 5-15 isn’t the strongest in the league but I think it’s up there. Maybe I’m a bit biased though.

ohyeadam, No matter how good a rental bat he is, he’s still a rental. It’s very rare that rentals bring back much, unless the guy is elite.

J.D. Martinez is a better hitter, than Naylor. He had a 165 OPS+ when traded to the D’backs in his age 29 season. Naylor has a 124 OPS+ this, his age 28 season. Martinez brought back Jose King, Sergio Alcántara and Dawel Lugo.

I understand the who and who for Jose King (never made the MLs), and Dawel Lugo (out of MLB since 2020 after 113 games). But you should remember Sergio Alcantara, recently DFA’d by the Giants, refused the AAA assignment, and then signed with the D’backs 6 days ago.

Naylor’s WAR this year (so far) is 1.0. That’s not so impressive. Two pitching prospects – one MLB ready and controllable for a bunch of years – that IS a big return.

Oh yea- exactly. There really isn’t much of a market for hitters that are available.

Naylor is or close to the second best bat available.

If he hits like he has for the mariners it will help them down the stretch.

Norcal- the same was said by Rays fans re: the haul for (2.5y) of Randy Arozarena- they scoffed at the best prospect in the return package – #9 prospect OFer Aidan Smith. TB FO people and Industry execs rave about A Smith. The prospect rankings are not done in a vacuum and FO’s know how well the M’s develop their Pitchers. Besides- the deal is only for 60 games of Naylor

I think that’s a lot for Naylor considering he isn’t hitting lefties. Izzi is a high quality prospect. They might also shift Garcia back to starting as he was kind of moved to the bullpen to get to the majors faster.

Per DRS, Raley is about the same level as Tellez this year (-3 in 163 IP for Raley; -6 in 421 between SEA and TEX for Tellez).

Historically, Tellez, while a a half-tick below average at 1B, would be plenty serviceable if he could reliably hit like a 1B. Raley hasn’t played there much at all in his career, but still grades as worse than Big Telly.

Raley’s suckitude at 1B is a surprise given that he’s surprisingly good and athletic in the COF. By all rights, he *SHOULD* be a good-to-very good 1B.

My guess on the odd man one out is Cole Young. Kid’s got a good future after of him, but he’s the weakest LHB left atm and he’s got Options.

I suspect that would mean a job share (presuming no other roster changes) of:
Polanco/ Moore (maybe Solano) at 2B
Naylor/ Solano (with a dash of Moore) at 1B
          Raley/ Moore/ Canzone in RF
Canzone/ Polanco (plus Raleigh’s no-Catch days) at DH.

That said, Solano is — by far — the weakest overall link left one the roster.

Robles’ timeline has always been “maybe… possibly… by the end of the year.”

It was a really bad shoulder dislocation on his throwing arm and batting top-hand.

The last major shoulder dislocation injury I can think of was David Justice around 20 years ago (and he did it while batting!). He went from a plus RF to black hole in LF over night. As such, I worry Robles will probably be lucky to ever have the same OF arm again.

Moore and Solano have been equally bad on the whole (83 vs 82 wRC+).

Moore had a hot April and May with disastrous June and July.

While Solano has been really, really bad except for his 50 June PA.

However, Moore can still play GG-caliber 2B and COF while Solano is an average-ish 1B and (for the M’s, at least) only a 1B. Moore is also really fast and a great baserunner.

If it’s one or the other, I think it’s a no-creative to keep Moore and drop Solano. They can still also greatly reduce Moore’s PAs and keep him mostly for the glove and speed.

Even if Raley had been his 2024 self, they’d be better with Naylor; as that would just mean moving Raley to RF and Canzone (kid with the hot bat) to COF/ DH/ (maybe) 1B rotation*

(*long term, that’s probably a much better play for the M’s as Raley seems to hate 1B and is a *MUCH* better OF over the kid)

In fact, that’s probably mostly what’s going to happen anyway, but more of the PA share going to Canzone and less to Raley

      Reply

That’s hyperbole if I’ve ever seen it.

Raley is a platoon player with a .370 OBP vs. RHPs and his defensive flexibility is valuable, even if he isn’t the greatest first baseman (and he has improved there).

The problem for Seattle is that he isn’t needed in the outfield right now and that won’t likely change as they’ll eventually get Robles back.

The power hasn’t been there, either. But he’s relatively cheap and could probably help a team like Miami or Washington, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he gets moved for an arm.

Not just since calling him up. It was a move made at the start of the season (no MiL GS all year).

I’m not a deep follower of the M’s minors and have heard mixed stories whether that was intended as a career move or just a fast-track-to-help-this-year one.

Given his relative success in AA as a starter last, I am a touch surprised to see him moved to the pen. I could easily see him having real potential either way.

Garcia was moving fast through their system and pitching really well as a starter last year but they moved him to the pen to start the year as his fastest route to the bigs. Thought he could be a potential late inning reliever in MLB and really only has 2 plus pitches so they thought his future was in the bullpen.

        • ayrbhoy

Garcia was moved to the pen because 1) the M’s currently have just the one LHRP in Gabe Speier- while he’s not injury prone Speier’s injury in 2024 affected his performance that year. While GS is having a much better yr this yr it makes sense to have another power LHRP in BG

          2) Logan Evans and Emerson Hancock are being used to plug the SP5-6 role while B Miller recovers from his injury. It would be risky to have another Rookie to compete for that sP5/6 role. It makes more sense for the M’s to keep using LE and EH since they now have valuable big lg starting experience.

          3) The M’s have seen prior success converting a SP into RP early in Dipoto’s SEA career with Edwin Diaz. Dipoto saw Diaz have a big uptick in velo and overall ‘stuff’ – I’m sure that made a big impression on Dipoto. He’d be hoping for the same increase in Chase rate and velo for Garcia. Converting him to LHRP therefore was definitely worth a shot.

B Garcia earned Seattle’s #3 Pitching Prospect rating not as a RPer but as a SP. Seattle only recently converted him to LHRP. While AZ’s current BP injuries could allow them the luxury of plugging BG into their Pen this year I’d be shocked that would be their long term vision for him. BG’s ‘value’ is built up on his success as a SP.

The M’s saw something in Ashton Izzi to pick him up. He suffered an injury early in his Pro career- thats the main reason why he doesn’t have much buzz built up around him.

28 other MLB FO’s highly rate SEA’s ability to spot and develop young Pitching. They are one of MLB’s best at spotting and developing Pitching. Many teams envy that ability. There are very few Org’s who have produced as many good young arms in a short period of time. The current crop of Gilbert, Kirby, Woo, Miller, Evans and Hancock have all been drafted from 2018- 2023. Not all of them were 1st Rd picks either. This year’s All Star SP for SEA B Woo was a 6th Rd pick Last night’s SP Logan Evans (who gave up just 3H vs LAA) was drafted in the 12th Rd. Miller in the 3rd. Most Org’s are lucky to develop 1-2 good SP’s over that period.

Saying Izzi will probably never develop is extremely short sighted given SEA’s track record

AZ traded him, because they’re not getting to the playoffs, and they aren’t going to offer a QO. They’re getting 2 guys with a lot of years of control for a guy that has little value, rather than letting him walk and get nothing. They made the deal early because they knew they weren’t getting a better offer.

Look at the history of these deals. Teams don’t value deadline rentals unless they’re the clear piece that puts them over the top, like Aroldis Chapman.. This return is as good, and possibly better, than what others like J.D. Martinez brought back. And J.D was a much better hitter.

Williamson is much more of a utility player than a starting 3B. He’s slick with the glove and a timely hitter… but he’s not a good or impactful hitter. He’s slashing .262/.297/.320 (80 wRC+, 4.4 BB%, 22.9 K%). We definitely need to upgrade 3B, if possible.

Williamson plays good defense. Suarez is going to cost a lot because there are so many teams that need 3b help. Enjoy Naylor.

Who cares? He can’t hit, as pointed out. Naylor should not be the only piece added. It’ll be pretty disappointing if he is. Geno remains the M’s top target and are continuing to be aggressive in pursuing him, as local insiders have pointed out. I think I trust Jerry more than King of Cards in this situation.

There are very few buying teams with a Prospect system as good as Seattles. The M’s are the only team in MLB to have 8 prospects in their current rotation Top 100. (All of whom are actually ranked 71 or higher) One could argue the M’s have the best system on offer out of all buying teams.

Applying that logic and the fact that SEA will be further motivated to add so they don’t squander the ‘year of Cal Raleigh’ all signs point to them still being in the market to add “good vibes only” to their clubhouse!

MyAcct – that’s not to say BW cannot add Slg% and increase BB Rate and his OPS. He had very little MiLB games before coming up to the Big Leagues. In fact if you look at BW’s exit velo’s and hard hit rates alone there is reason to believe he can tap into more XBH’s. BW is not currently a slugger but he can most certainly add more muscle to his frame w/o losing range playing the hot corner. I’ve read our FO believes his ceiling to be higher than what we’ve seen this yr

Of course! I’m not suggesting BW can’t become a good hitter, I’m just saying he’s not one currently, and an upgrade at 3B for this year would be welcomed. I think he will ultimately be used as Moore’s replacement at UTIL after this season, especially given Emerson’s looming presence at 3B.

One thing I’d push back on is BW’s EV and HH rates… I’m not sure what you’re seeing there. His avg EV is 28th percentile, HH rate is 35th percentile, and he has no launch angle (1st percentile) and bat speed (18th percentile), which point towards him likely never being a HR guy. But maybe he can add more XBH.

I’m not out on Williamson by any means and I’m not even out on him for 2025!

Naylor was much more of a need. Suarez is a want that has too many teams vying for him

The team has a much bigger need for a RHB (120 team wRC+ versus LHP and 108 vRHP), but also the biggest need was for a 1B/ DH/ COF.

The ideal scenario would have been a RHB that can play 1B defensively and also hit like one, but it seems that market was limited to just O’Hearn and there are other teams competing for that slot.

Geno is/ was still a big option (Williamson wasn’t ready offensively when called up and still isn’t ready after ~300 MLB PA).

I don’t think that’s why Garcia was sent down. By doing so, they burned an option (he had been promoted, so an option had yet to be used). Maybe Arizona will keep him down anyway and start converting him back into a starting role, but I think Seattle simply wanted a fresh arm.

The surprise for me was that Garcia and Izzi got it done. I thought Naylor would net Arizona a bigger return.

Only in 2 out of the last 3 yrs when they’ve had a legitimate chance to get to the Playoffs. SEA had one of the best deadlines of any team last yr- they were really unlucky with Yimi Garcia’s injury soon after that trade. Up until that injury Y Garcia was having a great yr, many people thought he was the best RP available at the deadline. Add 2.5 yrs of Randy Arozarena and 2 months of Justin Turner (who’s experience greatly impacted Cal Raleigh going forward.) We have some work to do to improve upon that 2024 deadline window. Then there’s the 2022 deadline haul that produced SEA’s WC game 1 SP that year. I might be wrong but I think L Castillo was okay in that game 1 start in TOR!? Haha

Preister was the first one anyways and I think it shows that those earlier trades are important too. If Milwaukee doesn’t make the trade they might not be in playoffs. He is going to give them atleast 10 extra wins. Now i think that Henderson,Patrick, Crow, and Mizo probably could made up those wins but it also got them a total of 3 more years of control on them.

Yeah. It’s also not like it signaled — or even had the chance to — successive moves by other teams. It was too big a surprise to do so.

This comes 1 week before the deadline and signals that an outside-but-close team with moveable parts is willing to move them. It also means that the 1B sellers’ market is one item shorter for the rest of the buyers.

Big whiffa, AZ is in a wild card hunt? Clearly they realize that that ship has sailed. They would have to pass the Cards, Reds, Giants, and Padres to get the last berth. They’re 2.5 games behind the Cards and only 1 game ahead of the Marlins. They score the 4th most runs in MLB, and yet have only a +14 run differential because, they’re 25th in runs allowed. They’re not going to the PS and Hazen is aware of that.

They got something for Naylor rather than see him walk at season’s end. The Machado return typical of deadline deals.

I agree that’s what many fans want. But Hazen sees the bigger picture. It’s easier said than done to add a pitcher or 3. With the disappointing seasons that Gallen, and ERod are having, and Pfaadt not progressing as hoped, retooling for next season makes more sense that spending in the improbable chance of catching up and passing the 5 teams ahead of them.

The return value in each Trade Deadline differs with each season. The current Sellers market in 2015 will net more value for those selling teams. Saying that though it seems like the value of a teams Prospect, i.e. 6 yrs control, has become more valuable to teams over the past 4-5 seasons. It seems like fans expect more in return value than what is actually coming back in these deadline trades

Except his ranking was not due to his time in the Seattle System as a RP. His ranking is a reflection of his multiple years pitching as a SP. He was only recently converted to RP just to give SEA a short term LHRP option. Seattle (and AZ) would still have long range plans of him being in a SP role. What stands out more about BG in your in depth analysis of a “decent FB” is his K/O rate.

Nearly every one of the 8 Top 100 prospects in Seattle’s system is having a better season than Ford’s “nice season.” Their #9 rated 1B prospect (Locklear) is absolutely killing it in AAA. He’s batting .400 over his last 30g with an OPS of about 1.250….his Slg % over his last 30g is .797 due to his 22 XBH’s in 30g. His OBP is .465 in those 30g. Two 20 yr old prospects #2 and #4 were just promoted to AA Arkansas after destroying high A Pitching. They’re both (Arroyo and Montes) actually hitting better there (both above .950 OPS) at AA than at any level in the Pros. Despite Seattle having one of the toughest hitters parks in all of AA. At 20 years old!Speaking of 20 yr olds their #1 prospect C Emerson has an OPS of over 1.000 in his last 30g. This is why Seattle’s farm is very highly rated. Re: our rankings translating to other teams – look at MN’s Gabriel Gonzales. His Prospect Ranking skyrocketed inside the Top 100 this year. He went from SEA to MN in the Polanco trade. You’ll find FO’s value our Prospects just a wee bit different to you

really, most teams have maybe 10 guys who fit that description. IT also depends on the type. Garcia is a FV 45 since he is likely destined to the pen (where no one is more than a 50 value since they do not play enough). So if the dbacks want a future middle of the bullpen guy for cheap, garcia could save them 3-4 million per year for the next several years since they do not need to sign one.

It’s a 45fv because of the lack of quality pitches. Which is also why he is in the pen. Most of those guys have two good pitches which is why they go to the pen. Nothing wrong with that.

10 on a team is about right, maybe a little less than that.

I really like Naylor, so my opinion maybe biased. I have Naylor as the second best bat available.

Garcia only has two pitches, but they are very good pitches. I imagine he’ll be an 8th-inning, setup guy by the end of next year. It was the right move for the Mariners, but they did pay real value for a 2-month rental.

1 and 2 quite easily to be Geno and O’Hearn and — while still solid, Naylor is a tick below O’Hearn (again; only if looking only at offense; Naylor is far and away the better defender of the two).

HBan22, Every team in baseball could have beaten that offer. The question is how smart would it be to do that. And the answer is not very. The D’backs did well. As history shows, rentals typically bring back very little. The Sox, or any other team, beating that offer would have been an overpay.

If the Diamondbacks were only focused on pitching prospects the Sox might not have matched up well, especially for a rental. I am sure there are a lot of conversations going on between teams that have not been made public. Still early.

Just the small issue of Brandyn being blocked in the rotation by Logan Gilbert, Bryan Woo, George Kirby, Luis Castillo, Bryce Miller, Logan Evans and Emerson Hancock…..and SEA just drafted the top LHP available, a polished NCAA arm in the 2025 draft, a LHP that could theoretically make his debut in 2026. Thats 8 Pitchers blocking B Garcia’s chance at a sustained run in SEA’s rotation

Recent articles say BOS is now not trading Duran this yr.

Despite Polo having one bad month he’s been our 3rd or 4th best hitter. He was a huge part of SEA’s win last night. Imo SEA is not trading Garver to put Ford in a backup role. If any SEA Catcher goes in a trade its Ford to a team who’ll give him a chance to win a Primary Role. He’s much more valuable to SEA in this role

And can he do that without actually being in the majors? Locklear was unimpressive in his 45 AB last year, but I checked a couple other pretty good players – Judge and Raleigh – and they both had similar starts (hit one-something in limited play their first visit to MLB).

That doesn’t mean Locklear will be a star, but I’d like to see him get a chance to be a productive major leaguer.

Too many people seem to think this takes us out of the Suarez sweepstakes and I just don’t see why. AZ might want to shop Eugenio more closely to the rest of the league. But they’ve done a ton of deals with Dipoto and know we have an obvious interest and need to continually upgrade the lineup. They’ll circle back and give Seattle a shot at Eugenio. Our farm is still better than any other interested team.

The price wasn’t too high, so that’s good.

Raley wasn’t hitting for power and still runs a high K%, but he was getting on base. This wasn’t a must-do move, but it tightens things up.

I’d imagine Solano is close to getting squeezed out. Raley has more value as an outfielder they can plug in at first.

Locklear has been murdering AAA pitching this month. He would seemingly be in line to get the full-time gig at first next year.

Meanwhile, Seattle’s bullpen is looking like Swiss cheese.

I don’t think it’s going to be Canzone. He’s been consistent and has a 147 wRC+. It’s easy to say Solano, but I wonder if they might trade Raley. He’d make a lot of sense for a team like Miami.

Polanco has a 163 wRC+ this month. But he misses a lot of games. It’s fair to wonder how well he’ll hold up over the next two-plus months.

I think Solano is pretty set to be fully phased out. Naylor isn’t great against LHP, but he’s good enough to not be a strict platoon.

I think Raley’s power will return, but his 1B defense isn’t great. I guess having one on the bench isn’t a bad idea in case they have to go RH pinch hitter in like the 6th/7th inning and want to swap back later.

I see Solano and Naylor the same way. I think they can get away without a platoon at first.

But I keep thinking about Raley being 30, out of options, arb-eligible next year and Seattle having 4 solid outfielders with a healthy Robles.

With Locklear dominating AAA, they may not need Raley moving forward. So, it makes some sense that they might move him for a controllable reliever.

Pretty Bad return for Arizona. Sure a rental and a 1b but garcia is a 25 year old relief “prospect” with decent stuff and no command (16.8% k minus BB in AAA is not saying back end reliever either) and izzi is interesting but probably at best a back end starter.

Seattles system is good at the top but very shallow and neither was ranked top10, fangraphs gave both a 40 prospect grade (which means likely quad A player).

Disagree completely that it’s a bad return. Rentals like Naylor have very little trade value. Prospects come with 6+ years of control. Teams aren’t giving up top prospects with all that control for 2 months control.

A lot of teams are looking for bullpen help. If Garcia turns into a solid bullpen piece he alone is worth trading Naylor. The D’back are going nowhere this season, and they need to get some return for Naylor or he’s gone in October.

The D’backs did well FG said this about Garcia:
“Garcia looks great. His velo is up, and he can alter fastball shape with remarkable distinction in the event that he chooses to elevate his heater rather than use his primary sinker. His slider is an above-average pitch aided by his funky low-three-quarters arm slot, and he’ll mix in an occasional cutter and changeup just to keep hitters on their toes.”

Izzi needs further development but at age 21 there’s time for that. At 6′-3″, and 165 Lbs, he’ll no doubt to fill out.

I agree, don’t think the D’Backs did too bad for Naylor, they have a pitcher in Morales that is ML ready and another that some minor league scouts said could be MLB ready by 2027 or 28 which according to GM Hazen is what he was looking for in these trades.

depends on how desperate the team is. Remember the cubs traded arguably the best prospect in baseball for a rental closer and eventually broke their 100+ year world series drought. They also lost that closer back to his original team. Look at PCA and the mets. Hmmm Maybe people should avoid prospect trades with the cubs 🙂

I believe the Mariners are the new cubs but i could be wrong. I dont know if they feel that desperate.

“depends on how desperate the team is.”

It also depends on the players. The Cubs brought in the best closer in MLB at the time, which helped get them a WS title. And, even though Chapman re-signed with the Yanks, trading Gleyber Torres wasn’t like trading away Mike Witt Jr. Both teams make that deal again knowing how it turns out.

But Naylor is nowhere close to the level Chapman was then, so not a good comp. AZ did well getting some help down the road, with a couple prospects from a useful, but not elite asset, and the M’s get a guy that can help them in the short term.

Yeah it should be considered that naylor is a rental 1b. But still he is a 28 year old 115-120 wrc+ hitter.

There is a reason why fangraphs has the two pitchers as 40 fv guys. Garcia just has very bad command and not enough stuff to make up for it, future good relievers don’t have a 16% k-bb at AAA at age 25.he probably is a mop up guy in the majors if he can stick there

You guys saying that rentals don’t get much in return. Geno says hold my beer. The Yanks are in on him and will go deep into prospects to get him. It all depends on how much others are willing to give up for him. Yankees will overpay for him if they think he is worth it.

      Reply
      • Jean Matrac

A marginal overpay will still fall short of a big return, You’re not understanding how much teams value control. Even a mediocre prospect with 6+ years of control has more value to teams than a 2 month rental. Suarez may bring back an interesting prospect, but it won’t be one of any team’s top prospects.

        • Domingo111

Control is important but not up to 40 fv. Every team has an infinite supply of 40 fv prospects and usually enough 45 fvs.

What really matters is control over 50+ fv guys, 40 fv guys are basically infinitely replaceable.

6 years of control of a negative war player is still negative war. Most 40fv players will have negative war if they make the majors.

        • Jean Matrac

Future value is an estimation of how a guy will develop. It’s not written stone. 40 FV guys have been upgraded to a higher FV when they develop better than expected.

Teams stockpile 40 FV guys because some develop into valuable assets. The more 40 FV guys a team has the better the odds that 1 or 2 bust out.

And a 40 FV guy does not lack value. It means he’s projected to be about MLB average. A 50 FV guy is projected to be a solid MLB regular.

You’re vastly undervaluing 2 40 FV guys, while overvaluing an above average hitter, with a positional inflexibility, and only 2 months of control.

I there’s a player in history, comparable to Naylor, that has brought back a better return than this, I can’t find it.. I invite you to try. But I can name multiple trades where the return was worse.

It wasn’t a must. Luke Raley is running a .343 OBP and they have a red-hot Tyler Locklear with a 1.409 OPS in July (not a mistype). Since 1 June, Seattle has the number one offense in baseball. Tightening up wherever they can is good, but the glaring needs are in the bullpen…and still are.

And what makes you think I’m negative about this? Nothing I said suggests that. I think the return is fine. I simply want to see the bigger needs addressed.

Solano seems likely to go as Naylor can be in the lineup everyday. Raley or Canzone could also be gone soon. Both are perfect left-handed sides of a platoon which makes it tricky. Also Dylan Moore has to be on the chopping block despite his defensive versatility.

They aren’t giving up D Mo. Can play G glove at any position and is great on bases. Very valuable. He might need a AAA stunt for a few weeks to get out of his hitting funk though.

Can’t be optioned. .196 OPS since 5/28 (note that this is OPS and not batting average). Mastrobuoni can do similar in the field. Makes a guy like Willi Castro a perfect trade target.

I’ve said before that Naylor would definitely be traded, and the Dbacks got what they needed for him—pitching.

In addition to all the big name starting and reliever pitchers who are injured, viritually all of the minor league pitching depth was also decimated by injury or underperformance this season. So any upper minors pitching depth is a must have for theDbacks.

Wrong again. All of Suarez, Gallen and Kelly can be QO. Naylor could not. Big difference.

That means Hazen will either get an overpay for each of those 3, or keep them. I think the bidding war will go to overpay on Suarez, but not so sure on Gallen or Kelly.

Dbacks have almost literally zero starting pitchers to replace Gallen or Kelly. Best is probably Desclafani, which tells anyone who looks at their pitching depth all they need to know about why Hazen will be extremely picky about trading either of them. It’s almost a slam dunk Hazen will not trade both of them.

As for Thomas/Josh, they will only trade one of them IF they are offering a package for a Closer.

The only bar that the Diamondbacks have to reach is the value of the draft pick. And even with that you ignore the financial savings the club will get.

The Diamondbacks are going to trade 6 more guys in the next week. Maybe Grichuk stays but thats only because hes paid a lot. The rest will be dealt one way or another.

Both Kelly and Gallen will get dealt. And I bet they get big league ready pitching back for at least one of them. We will see.

I personally believe we will trade Kelly and Geno. Gallen ls value has tanked so much contrary to his history the last few years. I’d say keep Gallen regardless and extend QO

It takes 2 to tango. The ability to QO Suarez, Gallen, and Kelly gives them more value for AZ, but for not for other teams. Other teams aren’t going to offer much more because they hold more value for AZ. Teams evaluate what value a trade target has for them, and that’s what they’ll offer. There may be a marginal overpay if they’re really motivated, but not more than what the M’s got for Naylor. Being able to QO those guys gives AZ a bit more room to accept, or reject an offer, but not much more.

Hey King, Interesting question. I’m a bit skeptical of the Giants chances to even get to the PS. They’re such a hard team to read.
Overall the hitting is the most inconsistent component. They’re 21st in runs scored, but tied for 8th best in fewest runs allowed. I’d hate to see them just give up on the season, but I don’t want to see them spend too much prospect capital for rentals going for it, without a real chance, either.

They need bats and if they’re going to gamble I’d like to see them go for someone like Luis Robert Jr. who may pan out for a longer term than just a rental. But basically, drawing on my many decades of watching baseball, looking at stats, and doing my due diligence, I really haven’t got a clue.

The Cards seem to be in a similar position as the Giants. Like the Giants, they’re in striking distance for a WC berth, and performing better than expectations. What do you think they should do? Everyone assumes the Cards will sell, and I’m not sure the Giants (Yastrzemski, Wilmer, Verlander), shouldn’t do the same.

Yeah looking at the Giants it appears they could use a bat. Probably a lefty bat and a 1b or maybe outfielder makes sense. I could see Robert hes a gamble but could be worth it. Lee might be better in a slightly reduced role. Looks like Naylor could have been a good fit.

As far as the Cardinals ask me in 6 days. I really think this is as close as it gets to being either buyers or sellers much like the Giants as you said. I dont think they will get much for their pen rentals in Helsley, Maton and Matz and thats really all they have to trade except maybe a reclamation project like Walker or Gorman.

Thanks, my handle tells you where I am.

I too think they will trade Suarez, and maybe one of Gallen/Kelly, but that’s about it for my expectations.

Dbacks so obviously need pitching, even to just finish out this season. I don’t mean compete for the post season, I mean be reasonably respectable for the rest of the regular season. There is nobody at AAA Reno or even AA Amarillo that is ready for a call up to pitch. The only possible starting options the rest of the year are Desclafani and maybe 1 other long reliever. That’s literally it! So why should the Dbacks trade even 1 starter?

I think they can take the rest of the season to evaluate Gallen and Kelly, with an eye toward resigning one or both of them. Because of Kelly’s age, he won’t command a huge salary and he has been valuable for the Dbacks for these past 7 years.

And Gallen has very low trade value. In fact, he is so low he won’t command anything above a pillow/prove yourself 1 year contract. So the Dbacks could take the rest of this season to decide if they want to offer him a pillow contract?

“It’s just a matter of can you get a hit on one of them.”

Exactly why teams like to stockpile as many as possible, The attrition rate is much greater for pitchers, from lack of development, to the higher injury rate, than that for position players.

40/45FV guys might be numerous, but that doesn’t mean they lack value. The more a team has the better the chance that 1 or 2 development into productive assets.

Tigers awhile back traded for Doyle Alexander, a rental starter, who had an amazing stretch run for them. All it cost them was a low level prospect having a poor year, some guy named John Smoltz.

        Reply
        • Jean Matrac

First off Alexander was not a deadline rental. He had another year on his contract after the 1987 trade, so not comparable to Naylor, since that extra year had value.

The Tigers drafted Smoltz in the 22nd round in 1985. He was 20 years old with a 5.68 ERA in AA when traded. I’d guess that the Braves liked him, but were probably surprised at what a great deal it turned out to be.

A good trade is one that helps both teams, and this is a good trade. Fans that see the return as light, don’t understand the value of team control. Naylor had little value, other than a short term offensive spark. AZ has 2 guys that they can control for 11_ years.

The M’s benefit in the short term, and AZ in the long term. It gives the M’s a shot at the PS, and gives AZ some useful pieces going forward. I like it that Hazen realizes 2025 is lost, and that Dipoto is going for it. I love seeing this type of trade deadline maneuvering.

There’s no way anyone could even know that the Dbacks did well yet. Garcia hasn’t looked great so far, although he’ll probably be good. Rentals are overpriced and prospects are often overvalued and overhyped.

    Reply
    • Jean Matrac

Twitch, I completely agree that prospects are overvalued. Not sure though that rentals are over-priced. Rentals are over-valued by fans. But the history of the returns for deadline rentals like Scherzer, Machado, J.D. Martinez, Kris Bryant, and Yu Darvish have all been light.

The belief that AZ did well is that they got 2 possible assets from a low value asset. Teams don’t value rentals nearly as high as fans do. What was Naylor going to do for AZ if they hadn’t traded him? They were going nowhere, and they got 2 guys better than what they’d have gotten from the comp pick, it they’d even risked offering the QO.

And you’re looking at just one side of it. What if Naylor can’t hit at T-Mobile? Or he gets injured? Neither team is guaranteed anything. IMO both teams took a reasonable gamble with a positive risk/reward for both.

What if? What if Garcia and Izzi suck forever? The Mariners filled a need, the Snakes rolled the dice. AZ may feel like the return is good, but I bet Seattle is more than happy that’s all it took to get Naylor. Seattle kept all their best prospects. I think it’s funny how high ppl get on prospects based on a scouting report. Hopefully it works out for both teams honestly

“What if Garcia and Izzi suck forever?”

What if they don’t? every team has their own evaluation of every other team’s prospects. They aren’t looking for what FV Fangraphs gave these guys. AZ apparently likes both, which is why they made the trade early.

But even if both do suck, what is AZ losing? A decent hitting 1B, that can play only there or DH, that’s going to walk in October, is useless to a team that’s not going to the PS. They got something for what, for them, was a useless asset.

I do think this is good for both teams. Naylor does have some value for the M’s, and they had the prospect capital to get him.

I don’t see Raley or Canzone going anywhere.. You have four outfielders….as any team should have….Raley, Canzone, Arozarena, and Julio. The logjam is in the infield and at utility.

If the Mariners get a 3rd baseman like Geno, then Williamson should ABSOLUTELY become a utility bench guy strictly for his defense. Dylan Moore has got to go. The glove means nothing when you can’t get on base hitting. Williamson absolutely has the upper hand here.

So if we are discussing players to get rid of…it’s Moore, Solano, and Mastrobuoni.

If the Mariners go after an Outfield Bat, then Canzone and Raley do get brought into the discussion of who to give up. Five outfielders would be overkill, especially with utilities on the bench.

Lastly, I hate to say it….go trade Harry Ford right now. He will be a star catcher, and I’m not sure if anyone noticed, the M’s got one already for several years. They don’t need two. They need another bat that can be in the lineup everyday.

Lower walks they have 2 good relievers. Improve 3rd pitch they have a starter. Not exciting return. They need to out develop Seattle to have anything here.

Polanco isn’t playing in the field. When you’ve got Ben Williamsen and Cole Young playing great defense, and you’re tying to keep Polanco’s legs healthy, you’re not moving him to 2nd or 3rd. Luke and Dom will rotate in the outfield and be a pinch hitter off the bench. Time to say goodbye to Solano though.
