Pirates Trade Ke’Bryan Hayes To Reds

By Steve Adams | July 30, 2025 at 3:25pm CDT

The Reds and Pirates have come together on an intra-division swap that will send third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati, per announcements from both clubs. The Pirates are receiving veteran reliever Taylor Rogers and minor league shortstop Sammy Stafura. The Reds will reportedly take on the entirety of Hayes’ contract, which runs through the 2029 season.

Hayes, 28, is a former first-round pick and top prospect who looked to be on the cusp of stardom early in his career. He graded as an elite defensive third baseman throughout his time in the minors and hit well as he climbed the minor league ladder. Hayes made an electric debut in the shortened 2020 season, showing off that plus-plus glove while hitting .376/.442/682 in his first 95 big league plate appearances.

Hayes didn’t replicate that output in his first full big league season in 2021, but he held his own with a .257/.316/.373 batting line in 396 plate appearances despite missing significant time due to a wrist injury. He hit just six homers but played outstanding defense and swiped nine bags. The following April, Pittsburgh signed him to an eight-year, $70MM deal which, at the time, was the largest in franchise history.

Unfortunately for Hayes and the Pirates, back injuries have become a recurring problem in Hayes’ still-young career. He’s spent significant time on the injured list due to back troubles in 2022, 2023 and 2024 — totaling five IL stints due to his back in that period of three years. Hayes still managed a league-average season at the plate in 2023 (.271/.309/.453, 100 wRC+, 15 homers, 10 steals) but he’s been a well below-average hitter since. In 788 plate appearances dating back to Opening Day 2024, he’s mustered only a .234/.281/.290 batting line (58 wRC+).

The Pirates frontloaded Hayes’ extension, paying him $10MM in each of the contract’s first two seasons and then cutting the salary back to $7-8MM per year thereafter. He’s making $7MM in 2025, with about $2.26MM of that sum yet to be paid out. He’ll then be owed $36MM from 2026-29 ($30MM in salary plus at least a $6MM buyout on a $12MM club option for the 2030 season).

It’s a relatively hefty sum to take on, though Hayes remains such a premium defender that his glove alone is arguably worth the remaining $9MM annual value on the contract (including the 2026 buyout). Hayes has been credited with an astonishing 91 Defensive Runs Saved and 73 Outs Above Average in 4796 career innings at third base, including 16 DRS and 15 OAA in 861 innings this year already. Since Hayes debuted in 2020, he leads all of Major League Baseball (at all positions) in both DRS and OAA. Andres Gimenez’s 63 DRS and Francisco Lindor’s 68 OAA are the second-highest marks in each category.

On top of a legitimate claim to being the game’s top defensive player, Hayes does have some encouraging offensive trends. His 20.7% strikeout rate in 2025 matches his career mark and checks in lower than the league average. He also regularly posts strong batted-ball metrics. Hayes has averaged 90.7 mph off the bat in his career, and 46.3% of his batted balls have traveled 95 mph or faster. The downside, however, is that far too much of that hard contact comes in the form of ground-balls. A hefty 49.5% of Hayes’ career batted balls have been hit into the ground, and his lack of consistent elevation offsets his average power.

A move to Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park could prove beneficial. Pittsburgh’s PNC Park is the toughest park in MLB on right-handed power over the past three years, per Statcast’s Park Factors. Great American, meanwhile, has been the second most conducive park to right-handed home runs in that time. It’s feasible that Hayes might at least eke out a few extra home runs just from the more favorable dimensions in his new home park.

The acquisition of Hayes could push infielder Noelvi Marte into the outfield on a more permanent basis. Marte is enjoying a nice rebound year at the plate, batting .276/.329/.500 with seven home runs and six steals in 146 plate appearances. Cincinnati has been having Marte go through outfield drills and has given him eight innings of actual right field (three games) over the past couple weeks.

Rogers’ inclusion in the Hayes return is solely for financial purposes. The 34-year-old is an impending free agent earning $12MM in the final season of a three-year $33MM contract, though the Giants are paying half that salary under the terms of the offseason trade that shipped him to Cincinnati. The Pirates, in all likelihood, will turn around and try to trade Rogers before tomorrow afternoon’s deadline.

So far in 2025, Rogers has pitched to a 2.45 ERA with a 23.3% strikeout rate and 13% walk rate in 33 innings. Rogers has a track record as a closer and setup man but hasn’t been used frequently in high-leverage spots by the Reds this year. He should draw some interest, especially if Pittsburgh is willing to pay down some of the $1.94MM he’s still owed through season’s end.

Beyond shedding the entirety of an unwanted contract, the Pirates’ return in the trade is the 20-year-old Stafura. He’s just two years removed from being the No. 43 overall pick in the draft and receiving an over-slot bonus of nearly $2.5MM. Stafura was regarded as a potential first-round pick in 2023. He’s spent the 2025 season in Class-A, hitting .262/.393/.411 (131 wRC+) with four home runs, 18 doubles, nine triples and 28 stolen bases (in 33 attempts).

Stafura possesses well above-average speed and has walked in more than 15% of his plate appearances in his professional career. His 23.9% strikeout rate is a bit high and there have been some concerns about Stafura’s hit tool. He’s played 170 of his 172 games in the field at shortstop (plus two at second base). Baseball America, in ranking Stafura ninth among Reds farmhands, noted that while Stafura has a roughly average arm, it’s quite accurate and he has the other defensive skills needed to stick at shortstop. It’s always possible Stafura will eventually slide to second or move into a utility role, but for now, the Pirates figure to keep him at shortstop.

Cincinnati has spent much of the past few weeks looking for offensive upgrades. Hayes is quite possibly an offensive downgrade, but he’ll be a massive boost to the team’s defense. The Reds, presumably, will remain in the market for a hitter who can more meaningfully upgrade their lineup.

Mark Feinsand, Mark Sheldon and Alex Stumpf of MLB.com first reported that Hayes had been traded to the Reds. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic first reported the return. Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the Reds were taking on Hayes’ entire contract.

What an incredible deal for the Pirates to get out of that albatross?! Hayes is a good defender, his bat would play at shortstop but a team like the Pirates had to get some offense out of a 3B, and certainly cannot pay good money for a glove-only 3B. I am sure that some of Hayes’ issues are health-related, but I give the Pirates an A+ and the Reds have acquired Jeimer Candelario 2.0. At least the Reds have kept all of their stud young pitchers.

Sometimes teams value prospects a lot less than the mlb.com or other outside lists do. Stafura is a little guy with limited power and some decent numbers in A ball at age 20. He’s not nothing, but also hasn’t proven anything yet, and lots of orgs have a guy like that. I would guess the Reds just didn’t value him anywhere near as high as the ratings sites do.

I don’t value prospects as much as many reds fans do. They have 2 purposes: 1. Develop into major league talent and 2. Trade for players that can help get to the postseason. Some prospects never develop and some get traded. Draft more next year.

The issue I have with this is that we did neither with this prospect. Espinal ranks high as a defensive 3rd baseman but his ops plus for his career is the same as Hayes with the same amount of service time which is 86. The definition of ops plus is league average is 100 so less than average for both. This year Espinal sits at 64 and Hayes 59 so both are way below average this season.

The reds already have way below average bats at 3rd base (Espinal, CES, McLain this year at least) so this doesn’t make us amy more of a playoff team than we were yesterday. Not to say we won’t make it as is but it didn’t make us better. Furthermore we will be stuck with the salary next 4 years which along with paying Candelario (another 3rd baseman that couldnt hit) next year will keep us from signing Schwarber whose bat would take this team from pretty good to very good.

By the way we have a good hitting 3rd baseman that plays decent defense in Marte. If we don’t make the postseason this year we should have kept Marte at 3rd for next season, sign Schwarber as a DH and let Lux play left field.

We are position flexible with Steer, Lux and Espinal but there is nobody except Espinal & Joe of our current 13 position players that are close to as bad offensively as the one we got. We needed a middle of the order bat and the one we got wouldn’t make the lineup if we played our 9 best hitters. Doesn’t help at all and a useless trade.

I had read the diamondbacks had interest in Petty. No way to know but if Petty and Stafura would have gotten suarez that would have been a difference making trade well worth it even though Suarez is a rental. We will be deep at starting pitching for a few years so don’t need petty as he would likely be our 8th starter. As for stafura yes he is an unknown prospect and could be good in the future or not but what we do know is that Hayes who we got can’t hit big league pitching and that Suarez could hit a dozen or more home runs here in GABP the last 2 months of the season.

I do not understand this deal from the Reds point of view. Hayes cannot hit. Taylor Rogers is a very useful lefty arm out of the pen. Cincinnati will regret this trade by middle of next season, even if Hayes’ D is good.

Is his defense really that good in order to have a +1.2 bWAR? I don’t know the math behind WAR but I would imagine at best his offense and defense cancel each other out.

Of course defense gets factored in too much, also defense ratings are subjective and vary from year-to-year. And this one, even as one of the very best 3B in MLB, he’s only touching the ball defensively 3X/game.

He’s only batting 4 times per game

“defense ratings are subjective and vary from year-to-year.”

Offense varies from year to year as well. So does pitching.

Defense might be slightly overrated in WAR calculations, but that’s likely mostly because it hasn’t changed since strikeouts started increasing and there are fewer balls in play. And this would mostly just shrink the range between the highest and lowest positional adjustments.

Long time, Machado hasn’t won a GG since 2015, arenado is great but his defense has slumped since 2022 his last GG year. McMahon has never won a GG.

Hayes was robbed of the GG in 2022 by Arenado trading on past performance and name value. If Hayes wasnt made of glass and played in a few more games he may have won it.

Hayes has the best glove at 3b in the NL at this moment and there is no denying it. His WAR is almost entirely supplemented by his glove.

Ok. Just saying he wasn’t even a top 3 in 2024 per GG voting.

I’m not suggesting that he isn’t a really good defensive 3b as his WAR is very weighted that way as you say.

He is made of glass and doesn’t play nearly enough games to make a stronger case honestly.

If he could somehow play 145 games every year he could probably go on a 3 year in a row stretch and win it every year.

I hope he does well as a bucs fan, great to see defense anytime these days because most player lack it, but his bat is ice cold here.

Jays are defense only?!? Huh? Guerrero, Kirk, Bichette, Springer and Barger (and Schneider/Heineken in limited roles) are all at 115 or better in OPS+. They have a couple d only guys like Straw and Gimenez, but that’s not accurate overall.

Jays are 109 wRC+. They have a RD of +22. Even the Reds have a RD of +41 but sitting at 4 games over .500 while the Jays are 17 games above .500. Jays aren’t overpowering teams with offense, it’s their defense and pitching that’s kept them in games.

The Jays are in the bottom third of the league in virtually every defensive metric. They are middle of the pack or lower (23rd in ERA) in pitching metrics. They are top ten in most offensive metrics.

There is no viable support for your incorrect, uninformed opinion.

Jays have the highest BA in MLB, top 10 in runs scored, first in OBP, 6th in OPS… They are 23rd in ERA, 23rd in runs allowed. They are in the bottom half of errors and fld%….
I’m sorry but that screams good at offense and bad at pitching and defense

I hear you Old York, but your first sentence is basically “the Jays are 9% better than league average offensively”, so maybe it’s semantics or playing in the margins, but the Jays have a good (if not great) offense.

Old- Once again, you do not talk for Mendoza.
I just saw an article that said Hayes did not want to play here. For the first time ever,I saw him smile on the field yesterday.
Maybe he knew that he would be traded.
He is hitting better and is going to right field well.
Whatever power he had has vanished.Maybe he will hit a few more home runs in Cincinnati.
But even if he gets his batting average up to 270 he will never hit with power unless he plays in Williamsport.
I had said just about a week ago that I would trade him for a good relief pitcher and they did. Then I find out that they will trade the relief pitcher probably for another A player who looks decent now but who will never make the ML’s.
This like Marte and Bell before him was a salary dump pure and simple.I am hardly surprised.
But he may very well be another Neal Walker with a chronic bad back and in that getting rid of him will help the team morale by eliminating someone who is too lackadaisical and will never provide the power so desperately needed at a power position.

Goes to chiropractor. Been fine this year. But 2027 28 29? He could work out. For near lowest payroll Pirates it’s not worth the gamble. Never got the impression he liked Pittsburgh and his family is very vocal on social media. Good move to get rid of him no matter how it works out.

          Professionalism.
Under Shelton, we were treated to jogging out ground balls, admiring fly balls that end up being long singles, cell phones popping out of a sliding baserunner’s pocket, Hayes having a handful of seeds as a ball is live, goes for a double and he’s playing 3rd, a catcher who twice lolly pop’s throws back to the pitcher with a runner on base, resulting in stolen bases
And a general acceptance of losing
Yeah. Some of us are sick of it
It’s got nothing to do with playing on a loser and everything to do with professionalism. You’re paid handsomely. You have fans plunking down money. They deserve better
Sorry for the rant and yeah, things have improved a bit under Kelly, but what you described goes against the grain of being a pro
Give me a team full of guys who leave it out on the field every time out, a team that hates losing. If they’re around .500, that’s fine with me

Given your way of thinking, dogging it because you play for a perennial loser is acceptable. Losing focus, not hustling, completely understandable
I’m wondering what “professionalism” means to you. In sports, we’re talking essentially about entertainers who are paid well.
The “lighting of the fire” is supposed to be what pros do themselves. It’s the definition of the term

The Pirates will either keep IKF since they will have their fill of A level prospects by trading Rogers or bring up Triolo to play third base since he is basically a clone of Hayes.
Hayes may be happy to be traded and that could improve his hitting but he will never be a good hitting third baseman.

But he will no longer have that excuse in Cincinnati.
He is no longer a youngster and that back will not get any better.
The Pirates clearly gave him that contract a year or two too early and just for promotion purposes.
That is a problem with having that philosophy with your own players.
Unfortunately, unless Reynolds gets his act in gear it may apply to him also.

Man- I understand what you are saying but some guys look at just winning the day.
Hayes was always nonchalant and I think that he got that from his father being a decent ML player.
He is famous for eating pumpkin seeds during a play a couple of years ago.Shelton did not do anything about it.
He is so smooth in the field that he does not look like he is hustling but I never saw him taking it easy running to first base of when hitting balls into the gaps.
He is a wizard at third base.
The shame is that the contract negated them from getting a decent relief pitcher with control for him.

Cherington must have slipped the Reds’ FO a collective Mickey to convince them to take on Hayes and his contract. Hayes was literally the least attractive 3B option on the market.

No, first and foremost, the idea of team at any given level entails the idea of having the talent commensurate with that level of play itself. Hayes was as one dimensional as Triolo, or Suwinski or myriad others here
I understand the idea of “every player is a cog in the wheel” where your orientation/philosophy/strategy themes are concerned, but Hayes was signed as “the building block” here, the “cornerstone” upon which to build.
Yes, your themes are nice, but he never lived up to what the franchise had hoped he’d become—the bedrock of those very themes. Not did he ever seem interested to begin with

The problem with that is I really do not think that the Phillies system is that deep.
Tait the catcher while young has potential and Abel looked good against the Pirates but they only have left Miller a SS hitting 260 and Painter who throws 100 but just got back from TJ surgery.
I agree that IKF is just a utility man but he has been acceptable at SS and can play a number of positions reasonably well.He also hustles and is a good teammate.
I am hoping that the overall attitude improves a little bit with Hayes gone.

A++++++++++++++++++ Extend Cherington now A++++++++++++++++++ A no doubt SS with speed. Lacks power and has some strike out issues but not so awful it can’t be fixed. High walk rate. Rodgers will replace Ferguson or better yet be traded tonight or tomorrow!

Red’s don’t even know. Could be a 700 ops hitter with the best defense you ever seen. No jelly in his back though. That scares the heck out of me. Getting away from that contract was a smart move. His back has been managed fine this year but just scary and too much risk for my liking. D for desperation move. If back remains fine this trade will be fine more than fine. It comes down to the back.

That is a very good question. I have been disappointed in him but he is still only 25 and had an ops + this year of 63. Hayes ops plus this year is 60 and at 28 the prime of his career. Career Hayes is 86 and CES 80 but CES is league minimum salary next couple of years while Hayes gets $7 million a year the next 4 years and then a $6 million payment if we don’t exercise his $10 million team option for 2030.

Here is the thing. This is not a move a team trying to make the post season would do and that’s not what I had hoped but fine we will have the same food team lacking a power bat next year. Hometown Schwarber will be a free agent after this season and the power bat to take us from pretty good to scary good. However paying Hayes $7.5 million next year and Candelario $15 million next year there will be no money left to sign Schwarber.

Either the Pirates are going to flip Rogers (they only owe ~2M) to someone who needs the lefty, or he’s going to take Ferguson’s spot once he’s inevitably traded.

Or the Pirates just wanted a Rogers to hang out with the other Rodgers in town. Maybe someone would buy a jersey in confusion?

They want to pay 2 at the same time that can’t hit. They will be on the hook for Candelario until the end of next season. Actually they will be paying 3 3rd basemen that can’t hit if we include Espinal. Yet we have one that can rake in Marte that we pay league minimum. We just want to be fair to other small market teams I guess.

Has a $12m salary, so that’s more around $4m prorated for rest of the season. A team near the luxury tax would benefit from the Pirates taking on cash. Pirates would benefit from a better return.

The way his deal was structured he made $6M this season. The Reds are paying $4.064M from his service this season. Leaves $1.935M for the Pirates the remaining this year. All per Spotrac. He made $12M in 2024, not 2025. But you are right they could earn a better lottery ticket if they eat that remaining. Considering they were going to pay about that amount to Hayes for the remainder of the year I’d say it can go either way.

I do not understand the reds thinking at all. 2 years ago at this time they were a starting pitcher away from making the postseason and did nothing and missed by 2 games last week of the season.

This year they are a power bat away from not just making the playoffs but a deep run and they do this. The objective seems like it should have been to replace a current bat in the lineup with a better bat. Hayes career ops + is 87 and this year it is 60. Point of reference Espinal who has had the most at bats playing 3rd this year is also 86 for his career and 64 this year. Can someone on here please explain to me how this moves the needle?

I also feel like since we got him on a long term contract that this is the only bat we will get before the end of the deadline. Career 86 ops + and in his prime at age 28 is 60 this year. Marte who should be our starting 3rd baseman after a horrible rookie season last year is 87 career ops + but at age 23 is 122 in limited at bats this year. So he is trending up.

Ok so maybe we move Marte to right field and sit Jake Fraley but his career ops plus is 103 and 110 this year. What bat in the current lineup does Hayes take to make our offense better? Even McLain who had a great rookie season followed by a disappointing season this year has a significantly better ops plus this year than Hayes. We got another Espinal except this one we are on the hook for longer and will pay him more.

I value defense more than most, but a .290 slugging, 59 OPS+ and you have to pay $9M a year (less, but adding in buy out is $36/4). His defense gets him graded as a 1.2 WAR for the year, and over 14 for his career. I think the money is better soent somewhere else and that he is near negative value. Okay give up a RP if you really think he’ll help your team, but to also give up a young SS, second round draft pick who has done great at the lower levels he’s played at (drafted out of HS) does not make sense to me. Pirates did great, it’s the young kids, plus whatever they spend the new money on. Could be two decent RPs that you flip again for prospects this time next year. Reapeat and soon enough you might have a nice core of young controlable players. Reds, not sure I understand. You like his defense, fine, it will help your pitchers out and make their job much easier. Just feel like anybody could of had this guy for just taking on the bad contract. I mean, it’s been talked about as a bad contract by multiple outlets and podcasts. What say you?

Love this for the Pirates. Yes this is a salary dump but it’s not a salary dump on piece we could build with (like Reynolds or Keller) but on a piece that is consuming far too much for too little production. The best kind of salary dump. Excited to see what we do with this money in the offseason (hopefully being spent by a new GM).

The Reds took the whole contract for a glove first 3rd baseman, could be a Gold-Glove. Hayes could reverse the hitting numbers in a new ballpark. I was shocked that they took the whole contract, the pitcher they gave up is a mid-inning reliever, the prospect won’t be there for at least 3 years, can’t forecast the future, but he was ranked 11th on the Cincy farm only time will tell. SO right now, on paper I give the Reds credit they have gotten a sure handed third baseman.

OK, not the blockbuster we had hoped for but a solid move anyway. Rogers contract was up and probably wouldn’t return. Sammy Stafura was a prospect that may or may not have worked out. Hayes immediately makes the defense better and will be here a while at a reasonable cost. Pitching and defense is a huge part of the game and we have it. We need a solid bat and we may not be done yet.

I hear a bunch of crying and whining. Sammy Stafura wasn’t going to amount to much and Rogers low ERA was very deceptive. Now the Reds have a gold glove winning 3rd baseman to take the heat off the human error machine called Elly DeLaCruz. I would bet the combination of a better hitters stadium and a competitive team will boost this guy’s game a lot. The Reds were never giving up CES, Petty, and Rece Hinds for Suarez. It’s to expensive when you’re hanging on to your playoff hopes by your fingernails. A 2 month rental for 3-4 players, no thank you.

I wouldn’t even trade Rogers for him straight up let alone a top 10 organizational prospect. Especially to a rival.

He is injury prone and has no power. Now they have him for three more seasons. Elly could move to third if they were that desperate for a third baseman.

Feels like they are making a move just to make a move which is reckless.

Agree. A useless move. Stafura doesn’t make us better now in the middle of a playoff chase but neither does Hayes. Anybody that has watched this year knows the one thing we have been lacking is offense in general and a power bat in particular. How many times have we been shut out. As of a month ago I think it was 9 times and leading the league at that point. But hey he is a gold glove guy with a career 86 ops+. We can bat him 9th like we can Espinal, benson and McLain. Who needs someone that can drive in 100 runs batting in the middle of the order when they can have a guy batting 9th driving in 30 runs a year and saving 30 runs playing gold glove defense?

I like this deal, but they still need a power bat 1B or DH….having a solid defender at the hot corner is a huge get plus it gets Marte a path to grow as an OFer which all along I think they feel he’s best suited especially with their system over abundance of infielders…as for the pitching need I easily see how a clutch reliever should be the acquisition but I’m starting to think Martinez maybe that guy and see if they can get another starter since Burns is on an innings count and health of Lodolo and Greene is always tricky to rely on….

Steer, our current first baseman had an 8th inning go ahead 3 run triple tonight that won the game. Marte has played infield his entire life to this point and from what I have seen handles 3rd base adequately from a defensive standpoint. You do realize in a day and age where most owners of the 4 major professional sports teams are billionaires that we have owners that consistently rank as poorest in not just MLB but all major professional sports. I hope I am wrong but I don’t think another deal tomorrow taking on a big salary this year is forthcoming.

An even bigger concern is that with paying Candelario $15 million not to play next year and now Hayes over $8 million a year salary the next 4 years will keep us from signing what we need in the free agent market this coming offseason. A power hitter like Schwarber who will be a free agent, or Suarez who was available now could take this team from pretty good or almost good enough to make the post season to very good and good enough to make a deep post season run.

True, but having an actual top tier defender at third not only stops the glaring defensive woes but moves Marte to the outfield where it was said that the Reds hinted as their desire for him to switch…also, I know they need a power bat one would assume they make another deal to get….and yes I really don’t care how much money is on their books I’m just a fan that wants them to win no sympathy for the billion dollar owners

I’m flabbergasted that the Pirates got more than a stale pierogi for Hayes.

Hayes looked like he was going through the motions this season. Was hurt last year. Doesn’t seem far fetched to see the OPS go back to around 700 with a fresh start. Never gonna be much better than that but definitely will be better than now. It was time for the pirates and him to part ways though

He’s looked that way his entire time here, to be honest.
