Yankees Acquire Camilo Doval

By Leo Morgenstern and Tim Dierkes | July 31, 2025 at 6:36pm CDT

The Yankees are acquiring right-handed reliever Camilo Doval from the Giants, reports Jack Curry of YES Network. In exchange, the Giants will receive four minor leaguers: Jesus Rodriguez, Trystan Vrieling, Parks Harber, and Carlos De La Rosa. Curry was the first to report that Rodriguez, Vrieling, and Harbor were included in the deal, while FanSided’s Robert Murray later reported the complete package.  The deal is now official.

In adding Doval, David Bednar, and Jake Bird today, Yankees GM Brian Cashman was able to acquire three relievers with control beyond this season.  That should be useful given the impending free agencies of Devin Williams and Luke Weaver.

Doval, 28, has a 3.09 ERA, 26.2 K%, 12.6 BB%, and 52.6% groundball rate in 46 2/3 innings for the Giants this year.  Doval burst onto the scene in 2021 as one of baseball’s hardest-throwing relievers.

Unlike most baseball executives, Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey had firsthand experience with Doval’s talent, having served as his catcher in Posey’s final season.  As a rookie, Doval made three appearances in the NLDS for the Giants.

A few months in the 2022 season, Doval was entrenched as the Giants’ closer.  He had a couple of strong years, including 39 saves and an All-Star appearance in 2023.  However, with his walk rate spiking to 14.4% in 2024, Doval was sent to Triple-A in August as Ryan Walker took over closing duties.  By the end of May this year, Doval had won his closer job back.

Doval has had better results this year with a 3.09 ERA, though his still lives in dangerous territory with a 12.6% walk rate.  Some of that is mitigated by his ability to keep the ball on the ground.  Doval likely won’t be tasked with the ninth inning for the Yankees, given the presence of Williams, Bednar, and Weaver.

Doval is under team control through 2027.  He’s earning $4.525MM in his first arbitration year, about $1.44MM of which remains this season.  Given the Yankees’ 110% competitive balance tax bracket, they’ll spend about $3MM to have Doval for the remainder of this season.  The club has run its CBT payroll up to about $316MM, according to RosterResource.

Posey’s Giants, meanwhile, save money and further stock the cupboard with minor leaguers, having also traded Mike Yastrzemski and Tyler Rogers in the last few days.  According to Baseball America, De La Rosa has the best upside of the four acquired for Doval.  The 20-year-old righty was graded 45/extreme risk by BA, who called him a “fine lottery ticket” who is on the upswing.  BA graded Rodriguez as 40/high risk, suggesting he “could have a future as a second-division regular who takes reps behind the plate and occasionally at third base.”

Though unranked by BA, Vrieling is more highly regarded by MLB.com, who assigned the righty a 40 grade.  They concluded, “he’ll have no more than a back-of-the-rotation ceiling unless he can develop a better-than-average offering.”  Harber, now 23, was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Yankees.  He’s reached High-A this year as a corner infielder.  He may be a bit old for his level, but Harber has a 156 wRC+ in 152 PA and may soon prove ready for Double-A.

Doval is a headcase. Great tools but unreliable control. Not Closer material but the Yanks don’t need to use him that way.

OK, who do you want instead of him running the team he’s got one of the toughest jobs in baseball. He’s not just the manager. He’s the guy that has to deal with all the BS that comes with being in New York. The only thing I see wrong with the man is he’s loyal to a fault. The guy is damned if he does damned if he doesn’t he is in a constant catch 22. 90% of the decisions that everybody questions that he makes are made because he has information that the people criticizing him don’t have.

Bill Parcells always used to say, “you are what your record says you are”. And Boone’s record is one of being very good. But not great. With the NYYs, if you don’t win a WS, you are relegated to the group of “good not great”. With the assets and players he has had at his disposal, he has not gotten over the hump. If after all these moves, he does not at least get them deep into the tournament this year? He’s gone.

Tbf he also came over when Chapman was hurt. They desperately need a better backup catcher, maybe first will be okay next year with Eldridge, and hoping they give matos every chance in right the rest of the year. Could see them bringing up Mccray though and moving JHL to right since it’s so tough

It’s funny, they’ve been fairly consistent as a team all season. With a team OPS of .687 high and .676 at lowest. With July beating May by .001.

As runs go, they were better in April because most of the hitters were hitting fairly well and were just be dragged down by a few really badly slumping players. And helped by Flores’ timely hitting.

Since? Well, it’s mostly been a few very hot hitters per month while the team as a whole slumps. And Wilmer getting less and less playing time (OPS still .949 w/ RISP).

No, they need a STARTING catcher. Bailey is a backup catcher.

McCray isn’t having that good of a year. Not considering .801 OPS is league average.

McCray can handle RF at Oracle defensively. Problem is he has too much swing and miss. If he can cut down the K’s, he could be something special. GREAT SPEED.

          Returns?!? From where?!?!?

In 1092 PA he has a .618 OPS. He’s actually having a better second half this year than the last two. Which is still below .600 OPS.

His best offense was in A-ball when he was older than overage. And that was only for 47 games. He was terrible when promoted to A+ after that.

He only got 120 PA in AA and AAA combined. He was rushed by Farhan to prove he knew what he was doing. He proved he didn’t.

So again, where is this offense going to return from? A time capsule buried long ago?

Slash78, No, they do not need a starting catcher. That’s a position where a guy like Bailey, probably the best defensive catcher in MLB, is far more valuable than some mediocre defensive catcher with a better bat.

Teams can win with a glove-only catcher, but they’re not going to win if they also have glove-only guys in RF and 2B. A team needs to cover for a great defensive catcher with production elsewhere, where the work in the field isn’t nearly as important.

It’s no mystery why Posey, a future HoF catcher, shows no indication he’s moving on from Bailey. He knows the importance of the position, and any offense a team gets is just icing on the cake.

At some point it doesn’t matter how “great” his defense is. Especially when you need All Star quality bats at most other positions.

It’s not just Bailey is bad, he’s gotten worse. Like Brandon Crawford’s first season bad. And he hung on because of his defense. The difference is by the time Crawford was at this age and point in his MLB career Crawford was a slightly below average offensive player who’s defense made him an everyday starter. Bailey on the other hand has gone in the opposite direction. His defense no longer makes up for his terrible offense this year.

With the pitch challenge system in place next season cheating, er, “framing”, will be less of an asset, so he’d better get his hitting together.

“At some point it doesn’t matter how “great” his defense is.”

That may be true for SS, or any other important defensive position, but not catcher. SS and catcher are not comparable in terms of defensive importance. There’s a reason why glove-first catchers have long careers in MLB.

And it isn’t just framing. Bailey will still be valuable if that advantage goes away. Catchers have to work with the pitching staff developing a game plan. Catchers mostly call the pitches. They need to block pitches in the dirt. And they’re the biggest factor in shutting down an opponent’s running game.

So again, I’ll trust what Posey does since he knows better, by far, than anyone commenting here.

I’m sure you’ll “trust Posey” right until he sends Bailey down.

That’s not happening this year because for the same Bailey shouldn’t have been a 1st Round Pick, Farhan was terrible at drafting. And worse, his obsession with flooding the Minors with other teams’ castoffs in the off season compounded with him picking up every AAAA player that crossed the waiver wire (and hoarding them in the minors if he could keep them) means not only do the Giants not have a real Starting Catcher, there’s only one catcher at any level the minors having any kind of decent year! (Other positions are nearly as thin).

Well, don’t tell me what I will do, because you’re wrong. If, and that’s a big if, Posey moves on from Bailey, I will trust his decision. Maybe you missed the part when I said he knows more than I do. I don’t have the oversized ego to believe I know more than a sure HoF catcher about catching at the highest level of baseball.

And apparently you also didn’t notice that what Zaidi did, as far as waiver claims and MiL signings, was what every other PBO/GM in baseball does.

Just off the top of my head I’d say Andrew Friedman and Erik Neander are better. Friedman also has a huge payroll to work with but does a better job of allocating money than Cashman. The Rays would win 95+ games on an annual basis if Neander had a big payroll to work with. I’m a Yankees fan and I like Cashman more than most but I can’t make a good faith argument for him being the top GM

Cashman has far more resources than any of the other GMs. You can only compare him with two GMs who have the same resources, the Dodgers’ GM, who is far better than Cashman and with dombrowski Since 2012, Dombrowski has led three different teams to the World Series, winning one ring, two AL pennants and one NL pennant. In contrast, Cashman has only led one team to the World Series 0 zero rings , winning one AL pennant in 13 years with the richest team in baseball. Let that sink in. With the Yankees’ payroll, Dombrowski would have won at least two or three rings by now in the same period.

Fine. He sucks. I’m tired of this already. Championships aren’t for sale. If that were the case, the Brewers and Rays would be bad, and the Angels would be good. He wins more games than anybody else, regardless of payroll. Dombrowski’s rosters have less MLB wins than Cashman’s do. More is better than less.

Playoff wins are worth a lot more than garbage Meaningless wins vs bad teams, which is what Cashman does. The Yankees bully bad teams, but they drop the ball against good teams. No Yankee fan gives a damn about beating the Orioles 10-0 in June, knowing they’ll drop the ball in October.

1 playoff win in october worth 100 times more than Meaningless wins in july

Rice and Jasson have been very solid they’re rookie season where Wells and Vilpe have been flat out slightly regressed. But Jazz, Goldy,, Belly and Grisham have all been good pickups so I’m not sure it’s fair to say there’s too many holes. It’s really SS, C and 3b and usually you can tolerate before average bats at SS and C when your getting power and normally above average defense.

No they aren’t. The wins in July get you to October. Tournament baseball is very different from regular season baseball. The team that gets hot or is healthy wins the tournament. The team with roster depth and better construction wins the marathon that is the regular season. Tournament winners are often just hot at the right time or lucky. I don’t think that makes their roster better.

If Cash acquired a SS I’d give him an A for the off-season & in-season moves. He’s pivoted nicely to address nearly all our weaknesses; but he’s too bent on what Volpe should’ve been, instead of what Volpe actually is.

Perhaps they see something in Caballero’s swing? Warren dominated him at the plate three times and then they traded for him. Plus, he’s pretty sound defensively.

Adding “depth” to “replace” Cole is not really true. You can’t throw 8 or 9 starters to replace the production of one of the best pitchers in the game. You might be able to cheat a little offensively with a deep bench, but starting pitching doesn’t work that way.

Early on he was stronger. He padded his stats with his 7th and 8th inning appearances, but if they use him as a closer or in high pressure, good Ol’ Camilo will return.

I think it’s interesting that of the four players the Yankees gave to the Giants for Doval, only two are even mentioned in the latest system rankings by Fangraphs (Longenhagen). Jesus Rodriguez is ranked the highest at #12 of the Yankee prospects. Vrieling is not even ranked in the top 30 but he is mentioned in the summary as a pitcher who could someday be a “depth starter” . However, he’s 23 years old. The other two, Harber and DeLaRosa, are not referenced at all.

This seems like a pretty weak return for a still young relief pitcher who has been alternating between closer and primary set up guy for the past three years. The fact that Posey waited until the very end of the deadline to pull the trigger tells me he was trying hard to move Doval and even with no excited takers, he made the best deal possible. 🤷‍♂️

@MLB – Guessing three of these

Hamilton, De Los Santos or Headrick who have options and can be demoted. Or Brubaker who would have to be DFA.

hey clipper, we appear to have really beefed up our relief core, which is a plus, but we still have the cartoon character to make decisions about when to use them so it really doesn’t help much unless every single pitcher in our pen is cy young. because it’s the buffoon who has to make the decision about who to use who and when.
furthermore, some of a major competitors in the league, improved themselves, and are now better than us ,such as Houston Astros, who got correa back, Seattle is better than us, Toronto at this point, and Detroit.
we really needed a starter, but Cashman could not pull it off and as usual, he has to win every trade instead of focusing on improving the team regardless he has to win every trade. same MO, same result.

ofc, the last time the yankees acquired an elite young CL, it turned out to be devin williams…. aaaand that hasnt gone so well, so we’ll see how bednar + doval do…. but on paper, yanks won the deadline. by a mile.

RPs are simply not worth that much. Im not sure why this comes as a shock to you all every deadline. Theres a reason why the highest paid RP is making 20 million meanwhile a guy like Marcus Stroman is making 18

I wouldn’t have had the bright lights of Yankee Stadium as being the best option for Camilo but good luck to the man. It’s been a fun watch. Really looking forward to watching both him and Rogers dance on the big stage.

When do we get tired of Brian Cashman trade in five players to get one with every other GM can do on one-on-one or two on one swap. It seems as though Brian Cashman always gets hosed in any trade. Anytime they see him coming they want more than any other team. When are we going to just try a different general manager who can earn the respect of other GMS and not be taken advantage of at all times. This is just more of the same of his ineptitude. He never gives prospects a chance to compete he just either hands them the job and watches them fail. Any trade that he makes he gives those acquisitions countless times to prove him right. It seems as though as he has a vendetta Against The Scouting Department because he gets rid of all their selections and Thins the minor league affiliates

        Verlander could be the closer.

That way they would only have to wake up the old guy once a week.

An underwhelming return for the Giants. Quantity over quality. Don’t see where this trade helps now or in the future.

Compared to what either Farhan or Evans ever brought in at the deadline this is quite a bar.

A very, VERY low bar though.

With all of the relief pitchers netting so many prospects this trade period one would think that signing quality relief pitchers to one year deals during the offseason and trading at the deadline is a smart approach for a small market team (run on sentence).
Example: Aroldis Chapman signed a 1 year deal this offseason with the Sox for $10.75 mil. He is an all star and would’ve definitely netted a haul if he were traded. Sign 3 or 4 quality relief pitchers and trade them all at the deadline (if they aren’t hurt). You could potentially stack your minor leagues with major talent from simple free agent signings.

I mean it is kind of what bad teams do. Using Chapman for example, the Royals signed him to a one year deal with the most obvious desire to wait until the trade deadline to flip him, getting Cole Ragans and another prospect. Why teams arent fully exploiting it though to corner the market i do not get. RP contracts are cheap enough to do so

Best of luck to Doval. But I just remember not knowing which Doval you’d get every time he pitched. Will it be fire baller Doval or can’t find the strike zone Doval. He kept the “Torture” tradition alive with the Giants!
