Padres Designate Tyler Wade For Assignment

By Anthony Franco | August 1, 2025 at 10:01pm CDT

The Padres designated infielder/outfielder Tyler Wade for assignment and optioned reliever Ron Marinaccio before tonight’s game. San Diego had already designated Martín Maldonado and Trenton Brooks for assignment last night. Wade was the final roster casualty to accommodate newcomers Freddy Fermin, Ramón Laureano and Ryan O’Hearn.

This is the second DFA of the season for Wade. He didn’t make the team out of Spring Training and was outrighted off the roster. Wade accepted a minor league assignment and was called back up a couple weeks into the season. He tallied 127 plate appearances over 60 games, hitting .206/.309/.252 without a home run. It’s very similar to last year’s .217/.285/.239 showing. Wade runs well and is a versatile defender but provides virtually nothing at the plate.

San Diego will place Wade back on waivers in the next couple days. There’s a decent chance he’ll clear, at which point he’d again have the right to elect free agency. He bypassed that last time around but may feel his path back to a roster spot with the Padres is more cluttered.

Getting Laureano and O’Hearn pushed Sheets into a backup role. Jose Iglesias remains ahead of Wade as the utility infielder. Today’s decision essentially came down to Wade or switch-hitting fourth outfielder Bryce Johnson, who is also out of options. The Padres stuck with Johnson, who is hitting .333 in 30 games.

Wade had 5 PA since 6/27 so no surprise there.

Pretty awesome to see that a guy with his profile can hang around for already 9 seasons in the major leagues. 5 years of service time, not bad at all.

But you do realize they called up another former Yankees prospect though right? Maybe you need to read the article again?

It might surprise you to learn that the majority of all prospects bust or become fringe big leaguers/journeymen. Your troll game sucks dude lol.

Bryce picked a good time to get hot for 30 games! Save his job for right now. He probably becomes the new Wade though getting only late game pinch running the rest of the way.

I like Johnson’s overall skillset more. Switch-hitter, average defense at 3 OF spots, and a better bat overall.

That was a good plan, trying to trick the Red Sox into giving us Tristan Casas for “Luis Castillo”

Wade carried a bit when the Padres OF was in tatters. I don’t really see a path for him moving forward with Wagner in the fold. Hope he gets a shot wherever he goes.

Well if Shildt is going to use Iglesias as a DH against LHP, he better have a plan if one of the infielders goes down or gets tossed in a game.

Tati and Merrill have experience on the dirt. I surmise that’s the emergency stitch!

Cro can play a little SS in a pinch. Arreaz to 2b if emergency happened.

McCoy if there was an injury. I do think the likely accepts El Paso but his time is running out like his speed will as he ages. Probably finds a job somewhere in 26 again but a little dicey unless a bunch retire so he can keep filling that slot. He may benefit down the road by 35 years olds retiring after being DFA’d with multi year contracts paying them to sit at home.

Johnson is a classic 5th OF. Light hitting, speed, defense. Useful. Do like Wade’s IF/OF profile but “grit” can only go so far.

I have – every Padre post since December, 2024. Not to mention the 1000’s of comments.

When you prove them wrong you get to say it. I and a few others have been trying to debunk this for 8 months so, one post emphasize the point seems a little fair.

    Fun facts.
Wade holds record for most innings at shortstop before committing an error.
Marinaccio has a carreer 3.17 in 117 inn’s only givin up 76 hits whule striking out 141. No love in this game

Marinaccio looks very good, and I’m sure he’ll be a part of the BP in 2026.
