Yankees Release Marcus Stroman

By Steve Adams | August 1, 2025 at 10:49pm CDT

The Yankees announced Friday that they’ve released veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman. New York also formally added deadline acquisitions Camilo Doval, David Bednar, Jake Bird and Jose Caballero to the active roster.

Stroman, 34, is midway through the second season of a two-year, $37MM contract. By releasing him, the Yankees are committing to eating the remaining $5.61MM in what’s now dead money. They’ll remain on the hook for that sum, minus the prorated league minimum for any time Stroman spends on the major league roster or injured list with another team.

A knee injury sidelined Stroman for nearly two months, from mid-April to mid-June. He pitched poorly prior to landing on the shelf (12 runs in 9 1/3 innings) but has been better since returning, tossing 29 2/3 frames with a 4.55 ERA. Stroman’s 14.8% strikeout in that time is perilously low, but he’s shown good command (7% walk rate) and kept 48% of his opponents’ batted balls on the ground.

Stroman’s contract contained a vesting provision for an $18MM player option for the 2026 season, but that option was contingent upon him pitching 140 innings during the 2025 season. He’s only at 39 innings on the year due to that lengthy injury absence, so even if the Yankees had held onto him, there was no way he’d have unlocked the option.

The Yankees recently gave prospect Cam Schlittler his major league debut and are seemingly more comfortable moving forward with the flamethrowing young righty in the rotation than the veteran Stroman. Manager Aaron Boone’s staff will now include Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, Will Warren and Schlittler. Reigning AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil is on a minor league rehab assignment after missing the entire season to date with a lat strain. He’s made four minor league starts, so he’s presumably on the cusp of rejoining the staff in the near future.

Though he’s clearly not the quality mid-rotation arm he was from 2014-23, when he pitched more than 1300 innings of 3.65 ERA ball between the Blue Jays, Mets and Cubs, Stroman started 29 games and logged a 4.31 ERA for the Yankees as recently as 2024. There aren’t many options for clubs in need of pitching depth to add it post-deadline, so Stroman ought to latch on with a new organization before too long.

Yeah but for a team paying him $18M and thin at SP, figured they’d have held him.

Any AAA pitcher could be doing what Stroman has done. He doesn’t provide length either. With the new trade deadline relievers, the Yankees would rather play a bullpen game piggybacking off upside young starters like Gil, Warren, and Schlitter. Stroman has no value to the team.

He still wants everyday opportunities to earn a contract next winter. MIN may be able to offer that to him with a long leash as they’re not concerned with wins at this point.

He’ll sign wherever they want him, unless he’s ready to retire. Given that the Yankees released him, surely they offered to trade him, eating a huge portion of his contract. Nobody bit on that, so the market doesn’t look that broad.

Just an outright release, like he’s Cleon Jones or something.

Stroman was well liked in clubhouse during Cubs and Yankees tenure. Not so much with Mets and Jays when he was younger.

Stroman is a great volunteer in the community.

Stroman is now the quality of starter than you might call up for a spot start and store in AAA. We will see if that role suits him or he is done.

Stroman could be a great pickup for the Padres.

Padres pitching coach could fix Stroman, make adjustments and get him some innings down the stretch drive that could earn him a look as the Padres #5 in ’26.
Padres have helped a lot of
pitchers turn around their careers. turned numerous relievers into starters, resurrected many veteran starters…
          Petco Park favors pitchers…

Padres may have 2 or 3 Openings in their Rotation for 2026.

Great opportunity for Stroman to rebuild his value for his next contract…

profar olson acuna ozuna harris baldwin all hitting right now. only albies allen and suddenly murphy not. nobody’s worried about murphy though, very streaky but good with men on base. they couldn’t hit early in the season because they installed an entirely new system that the guys hated. you want us to see more pitches and walk more? but we mash? ok, whatever coach. guys one by one making adjustments. harris off the charts now, and is totally ignoring team’s first-half ‘walk’ directive. snitker hurt them by playing ozuna the first half with a bad hip when baldwin was a ROY wasting away on the bench most of the time. they can hit enough. they just can’t avoid injuries for some reason, going on 2 years now. wonder what joe maddon would do with this bunch.

This is… shocking. He was not the greatest teammate, yelling at gleyber last year, but he has pitched ok. With Luis Gil coming back, this is surprising given how young cam schlitler is. I was thinking he was gonna get traded yesterday. This is very interesting. To those of you saying “welcome to atlanta”, you aren’t wrong 😂

Rizzo chewed out Higgy in the dugout in plainsight when he forgot the number of outs behind the plate. Holding someone accountable is not indicative of a bad teammate. Wells could’ve used some tough-love when he was caught off secondbase a few games ago.

Even if it was possible for him to hit the innings requirement in the contract, it wouldn’t apply anymore. Once the Yankees released him and ate the money for this season, that option is no applicable because the next team he signs with will be a DIFFERENT contract. The new team will not be taking on his old contract or any of the options involved with it. That contract is 100% dead as of now other than the rest of his salary to be paid out.

Yes that is true. If the option has been reached before the contract is terminated, then the option is still in play. But if he ended up a third of an inning or more short before the termination, then it would be dead no matter how many innings he pitches from now until the end of the year.

He needs to get to 140 IP. He’s at 39. It’s possible–and you could see a bad team picking him up and giving him the 100 if he wanted it, but he’d need 17 starts at 6 IP a start.

Not possible at all with 2 months left for 17 starts. Durable pitchers get 31-34 starts a season on 6 months.

Stroman isn’t signing a minor league contract to be stashed away as depth. The Braves, Orioles, and Twins all need innings to get through the rest of the season, same could be said for the Diamondbacks and White Sox. Not sure if anyone actually signs him but the price is right so there may be an opportunity somewhere

Nobody is going to take him right now, not with 50 games remaining the teams driving for the playoff are pretty well set with their pitching staff, and the teams who have thrown in the towel for 2025 are mainly going to use these last 50 games or so to check out their AA and AAA pitching just to see what they have for 2026. Stroman best shot for another shot at the MLB is sign on as a non-roster pitch next Spring..

Stroman was well liked in Chicago until he griped to the media about not getting an extension. shortly thereafter he was injured and went from an ace to a dud. So, while he’s an ok guy, but not a chance in a thousand he has a Wrigley reunion. He was liked in clubhouse but he brined his bridges with the owner and FO.

Thats not particularly relevant to his current value on their roster though. He’s been more than solid at the plate since he’s come back. Iirc the yearly salaries taper down on the back end of the deal too so while there may come a day when they need to cut bait its not right now.

Kinda shocked. Not like, overall, but the timing is odd. He was rebuilding value and had a few good outings for them leading up to this. I guess it’s like others said- couldn’t get a decent trade return lined up, couldn’t dump the remaining money on another club, he was refusing an outright assignment, he’s already mentally checked out and difficult to work with…

I wonder who will take a flier on him and hope they can squeeze a year or two out of him before he once again blames the club for his problems and forces a split between player and team?

Stroman was never a fit for the Yankees. He NEEDS quality defense behind him to be reasonably effective.
There is no doubt his “abrasiveness” is a factor but he is a useful player who will compete (if not succeed) right to the end.
He will help the right team if he is smart enough to make the correct choice, now that money is not a factor.

Good. My 9 year-old son is a Yankees fan and a baseball player. I told him that Stroman had been released and he had this to say:

“On my team, I start and relieve. I do whatever my Coach wants me to do. Marcus Stroman is a jerk because he thinks he’s too good to pitch in relief”.

A kid said that. This goes to show that Stroman is not just performing poorly but even kids can see that his attitude is poor. Good call by the Yankees.

He needs to get control of that chip on his shoulder. I am a Jays fan I have a soft spot for him. Maybe he needs to not get picked up and left to sit and think for a bit.
