2:27PM: The Pirates officially announced Devanney’s promotion, with Simon heading to the 10-day IL. Simon suffered a dislocated left shoulder, so in all likelihood his 2025 season is over. Making his MLB debut with the Marlins earlier this year, Simon’s first year in the Show saw him hit .234/.299/.273 over 88 total PA with Miami and Pittsburgh, with the move to the Bucs coming via waiver claim in early June.
11:37AM: Ronny Simon is likely to be placed on the 10-day injured list in the corresponding move for Devanney, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes. Simon was removed from yesterday’s game due to a left shoulder injury after an awkward slide into home plate. This means that Devanney could be used more in the outfield than in the infield, depending on what happens with Kiner-Falefa’s situation.
10:26AM: The Pirates are calling up infielder Cam Devanney from Triple-A Indianapolis, according to Jose Negron of DK Pittsburgh Sports. The corresponding 26-man roster move isn’t yet known, and Devanney is already on the Bucs’ 40-man roster.
Devanney will be making his Major League debut whenever he appears in a game, though this isn’t his first time in the Show. The Royals selected his contract from Triple-A in July but didn’t use Devanney in a game during his week-long stint on the active roster, though some of that stint was taken up by the All-Star break. Before the second half of the season could begin, Kansas City traded Devanney to Pittsburgh in the one-for-one swap that brought Adam Frazier back to the Royals.
The change of scenery has led to a downturn in Devanney’s offense, as his .256/.327/.361 slash line over 147 plate appearances with Indianapolis is well below the .272/.366/.565 slash he had with Triple-A Omaha this season prior to the trade. While Devanney hasn’t exactly kicked down the door and forced a promotion, the Pirates may soon have a vacancy in the infield if Isiah Kiner-Falefa is claimed off outright waivers. Rival teams will have to acquire IKF before September 1 to include him on a postseason roster, so Devanney’s call-up could be a hint that Pittsburgh is expecting a claim soon.
Devanney could perhaps replicate Kiner-Falefa in terms of versatility. Devanney has played mostly shortstop during his career but has a lot of experience at second and third base, plus a handful of appearances as a first baseman and left fielder. This season’s numbers in Omaha were the high point of a generally productive run in Triple-A for the infielder, who has slashed .264/.349/.469 with 53 homers over 1404 with the top affiliates of the Pirates, Royals, and Brewers. A 15th-round pick for the Brew Crew in the 2019 draft, Devanney was dealt to the Royals as part of the 2023-24 offseason trade that sent Taylor Clarke from K.C. to Milwaukee.
He was already on the 40 man roster.
Simon was probably put on the IL list for the 26 man roster.
Yea mendoza your post makes the most sense. He should have been called up when the trade was made.
I would play him everyday at short and move triolo to 3rd. But then again Kelly manages like shelton
Not that bad, but close. Let’s see. You have a poorly hitting middle infielder playing out if position at first, while a decent bat and glove sits. I’ll take a left on left over a bad bat, bad field at 1st. Probably cost them a run yesterday. You have a superior fielding 3b playing an average SS, while at third a basically at this point, utility guy. Gold Glove? Not anymore.
Peguerro only plays first base against lefties
His point seems to be that he does not play first base.
Probably another one of Cherington’s ideas as in let’s just give the guy a first baseman’s mitt and see how he does.
actually Peguero has defended first base fine
Remember when the pirates announced in the spring or maybe last season that Reynolds would start taking reps at 1B? He even got a 1B mitt! How exciting! I guess Shelton forgot to try that experiment.
Horwitz would have at least blocked IKF’s throw yesterday if not caught it.
There are very few players that play first base and shortstop.
That is much more the typical switch than from shortstop.
Baffling decisions are sometimes common with the Pirates.
Maybe they thought that Reynolds was needed more in the outfield but the transition would be more natural especially as he is going downhill as an outfielder.
They anticipating IKF being claimed or is peguero being shipped out?
Neither
Bout time this kid got some sort of shot.
I was thinking the same thing. 28 years old with pretty good minor league numbers and has never gotten a shot
Gorski-esque?
Not a kid. Poor K rate. Just another we have nothing else see what happens.
Meanwhile Nick Yorke, who has multiple hits in 6 of the last 8 games, toils in Indy.
while Canario strike side, almost every plate appearance
Yea man… i dont understand using Canario. He almost blew the game last night with his fielding blunder. I wonder if it’s just cherrington making these roster moves or is Kelly putting in his 2 cents. Canario should be DFAd and yorke and cooke need called up and playing. Same goes fir suwinsky. Whatever happened to him is a shame. Might be mental, but knowing the pirates, someone tinkered with his stance or swing and screwed him up. Davis, though distinguishing himself defensively, is a non hitter. Same as Bart, who should be let go. Make these moves and call up cooke, yorke and Ramos, who came in the bednar trade. No sense playing or keeping the guys I mentioned. It’s not like they will win 10 games in September with them. Maybe these call ups could spark them
Haines tried to make Jack more of a contact hitter last year which messed up his power swing
Jack Canario superior talents vs Yorke Cook. Keep them as long as possible and time is running out then move on to Yorke Cook. They know what Yorke Cook are why they are still in minors.
Canario and suwinski show just how bad the prospect pool is for hitting. Heck bring up a 30 year old journeyman. Can’t be any worse
actually he’s 28
Yorke is 23 and they traded Priester to get him, he will get his shot, the pirates are probably desperate for him to succeed.
Yes, I think they treat Yorke more like a solid prospect than a depth piece. So they will bring Yorke up when it is best for his development rather than to help the team win one or two extra games in an already lost season for the team.
Cherington said previously that he wanted to see how the younger guys played for the rest of the season.
Consider they already saw how Canario played why not bring up Yorke or Cook and see how each plays.
They know that they’re out of playoff contention, and they still don’t want to lose every game either
do you proofread your comments before posting them, Commentator?
Commentator sounds like..you know who lol
They only have so many slots available and my guess is that they do not want to lose Canerio this year to see how he does early next year as they are not exactly teeming with good outfielders.
Carnario has been with the team since May and plays regularly against lefties.
How much do they need to see before determining he isn’t major league caliber?
Nick will be up in a couple days when the rosters expand to 28. Easy way to send a message to Yorke too
Why has Ronny Simon been playing OF? No wonder his defensive numbers out there are so brutal. Peguero at 1B, too … why?
Because Cherington refuses to promote Cook who can hit lefties
Instead he prefers to use Peguero to bat instead of Horowitz
And I like Peguero but he doesn’t belong at first when we have other options in the minors
According to Baseball Reference, Simon plays left field, shortstop and second base
May, not historically a strike out pitcher, struck out the side in the 2nd inning
Cruz struck out swinging which isn’t surprising, Bart never took the bat off his shoulders and IKF swung on a pitch nowhere close to the plate
Management needs Cruz to hire a personal hitting coach over the winter and whoever the GM is during the offseason, he needs to find a catcher who can at least hit his weight
