2:27PM: The Pirates officially announced Devanney’s promotion, with Simon heading to the 10-day IL. Simon suffered a dislocated left shoulder, so in all likelihood his 2025 season is over. Making his MLB debut with the Marlins earlier this year, Simon’s first year in the Show saw him hit .234/.299/.273 over 88 total PA with Miami and Pittsburgh, with the move to the Bucs coming via waiver claim in early June.
11:37AM: Ronny Simon is likely to be placed on the 10-day injured list in the corresponding move for Devanney, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes. Simon was removed from yesterday’s game due to a left shoulder injury after an awkward slide into home plate. This means that Devanney could be used more in the outfield than in the infield, depending on what happens with Kiner-Falefa’s situation.
10:26AM: The Pirates are calling up infielder Cam Devanney from Triple-A Indianapolis, according to Jose Negron of DK Pittsburgh Sports. The corresponding 26-man roster move isn’t yet known, and Devanney is already on the Bucs’ 40-man roster.
Devanney will be making his Major League debut whenever he appears in a game, though this isn’t his first time in the Show. The Royals selected his contract from Triple-A in July but didn’t use Devanney in a game during his week-long stint on the active roster, though some of that stint was taken up by the All-Star break. Before the second half of the season could begin, Kansas City traded Devanney to Pittsburgh in the one-for-one swap that brought Adam Frazier back to the Royals.
The change of scenery has led to a downturn in Devanney’s offense, as his .256/.327/.361 slash line over 147 plate appearances with Indianapolis is well below the .272/.366/.565 slash he had with Triple-A Omaha this season prior to the trade. While Devanney hasn’t exactly kicked down the door and forced a promotion, the Pirates may soon have a vacancy in the infield if Isiah Kiner-Falefa is claimed off outright waivers. Rival teams will have to acquire IKF before September 1 to include him on a postseason roster, so Devanney’s call-up could be a hint that Pittsburgh is expecting a claim soon.
Devanney could perhaps replicate Kiner-Falefa in terms of versatility. Devanney has played mostly shortstop during his career but has a lot of experience at second and third base, plus a handful of appearances as a first baseman and left fielder. This season’s numbers in Omaha were the high point of a generally productive run in Triple-A for the infielder, who has slashed .264/.349/.469 with 53 homers over 1404 with the top affiliates of the Pirates, Royals, and Brewers. A 15th-round pick for the Brew Crew in the 2019 draft, Devanney was dealt to the Royals as part of the 2023-24 offseason trade that sent Taylor Clarke from K.C. to Milwaukee.
He was already on the 40 man roster.
Simon was probably put on the IL list for the 26 man roster.
Yea mendoza your post makes the most sense. He should have been called up when the trade was made.
I would play him everyday at short and move triolo to 3rd. But then again Kelly manages like shelton
Not that bad, but close. Let’s see. You have a poorly hitting middle infielder playing out if position at first, while a decent bat and glove sits. I’ll take a left on left over a bad bat, bad field at 1st. Probably cost them a run yesterday. You have a superior fielding 3b playing an average SS, while at third a basically at this point, utility guy. Gold Glove? Not anymore.
Peguerro only plays first base against lefties
His point seems to be that he does not play first base.
Probably another one of Cherington’s ideas as in let’s just give the guy a first baseman’s mitt and see how he does.
actually Peguero has defended first base fine
Remember when the pirates announced in the spring or maybe last season that Reynolds would start taking reps at 1B? He even got a 1B mitt! How exciting! I guess Shelton forgot to try that experiment.
Horwitz would have at least blocked IKF’s throw yesterday if not caught it.
There are very few players that play first base and shortstop.
That is much more the typical switch than from shortstop.
Baffling decisions are sometimes common with the Pirates.
Maybe they thought that Reynolds was needed more in the outfield but the transition would be more natural especially as he is going downhill as an outfielder.
Yes, and he shouldn’t play first against anyone. Offers no bat or defense at first
They anticipating IKF being claimed or is peguero being shipped out?
Neither
Bout time this kid got some sort of shot.
I was thinking the same thing. 28 years old with pretty good minor league numbers and has never gotten a shot
Gorski-esque?
Not a kid. Poor K rate. Just another we have nothing else see what happens.
It’s a matter of perspective. I’m 53 so he’s young enough to be my kid.
Meanwhile Nick Yorke, who has multiple hits in 6 of the last 8 games, toils in Indy.
while Canario strike side, almost every plate appearance
Yea man… i dont understand using Canario. He almost blew the game last night with his fielding blunder. I wonder if it’s just cherrington making these roster moves or is Kelly putting in his 2 cents. Canario should be DFAd and yorke and cooke need called up and playing. Same goes fir suwinsky. Whatever happened to him is a shame. Might be mental, but knowing the pirates, someone tinkered with his stance or swing and screwed him up. Davis, though distinguishing himself defensively, is a non hitter. Same as Bart, who should be let go. Make these moves and call up cooke, yorke and Ramos, who came in the bednar trade. No sense playing or keeping the guys I mentioned. It’s not like they will win 10 games in September with them. Maybe these call ups could spark them
Haines tried to make Jack more of a contact hitter last year which messed up his power swing
Jack Canario superior talents vs Yorke Cook. Keep them as long as possible and time is running out then move on to Yorke Cook. They know what Yorke Cook are why they are still in minors.
Well, the lack of understanding why Kelly continues to play Canario continues as he is in today’s lineup.
I already told you a dozen times why. Maybe half dozen. It’s Canario or Jack. Someone has to play.
make it a baker’s dozen
Yes I am well aware that it’s either Jack or Alexander
Your beef is with Cherington. Why is Canario Jack still here? Because AAA outfielders stink.
Richie Zisk is available.
Canario and suwinski show just how bad the prospect pool is for hitting. Heck bring up a 30 year old journeyman. Can’t be any worse
actually he’s 28
I know you meant Solak TJ with 30 year old journeyman or exaggerated Devanney age
Yorke is 23 and they traded Priester to get him, he will get his shot, the pirates are probably desperate for him to succeed.
Yes, I think they treat Yorke more like a solid prospect than a depth piece. So they will bring Yorke up when it is best for his development rather than to help the team win one or two extra games in an already lost season for the team.
Cherington said previously that he wanted to see how the younger guys played for the rest of the season.
Consider they already saw how Canario played why not bring up Yorke or Cook and see how each plays.
They know that they’re out of playoff contention, and they still don’t want to lose every game either
do you proofread your comments before posting them, Commentator?
Commentator sounds like..you know who lol
They only have so many slots available and my guess is that they do not want to lose Canerio this year to see how he does early next year as they are not exactly teeming with good outfielders.
Carnario has been with the team since May and plays regularly against lefties.
How much do they need to see before determining he isn’t major league caliber?
They seen how the played last year. Seen how they played in AAA this year. They seen what Boston received trading Priester to Milwaukee. Seen what Priester has done in Milwaukee. They are probably like me and seen enough.
Commentator is referring to MLB Top 100 Commenter not me bub. Commenter Commentator? Get it? With the tsd mind rot there is plenty of space for me in that head of yours.
He wasn’t referring to you, Dream
Ty man..I wasn’t referring to IT
What did they say then to cause such a fuss I must have missed that exchange.
We think Richard has returned with a new name
Thsts who I’m thinking it is
I believe mlb top 100 is older member than Richard if that’s who you are referring to. Someone else sounded a lot like Richard and hasn’t been seen since Richard.
How do we know that Richard is not Old Timer?
His 27th name change occurred about the same time?
He has referred to Richard in recent posts but it could be a cover.
oldtimer is really old dude
Full original name Tired Old Dude which he still responds to if someone calls out his name.
yes, that’s his original name Mendoza.
Tired has a distinct writing style that can’t be confused with Richard
Nick will be up in a couple days when the rosters expand to 28. Easy way to send a message to Yorke too
Why has Ronny Simon been playing OF? No wonder his defensive numbers out there are so brutal. Peguero at 1B, too … why?
Because Cherington refuses to promote Cook who can hit lefties
Instead he prefers to use Peguero to bat instead of Horowitz
And I like Peguero but he doesn’t belong at first when we have other options in the minors
According to Baseball Reference, Simon plays left field, shortstop and second base
Not sure Billy Cook is an answer, either, but at least he wouldn’t be playing out of position. Simon is a middle infielder who just started playing the outfield last year, and not well. I guess you could “dream” on him being a Rajai Davis type in the outfield, but his defense would have to grow so much. I like Peguero, too, it’s just absolutely awful production out of a position where the offensive threshold is much higher.
They want their bats in the lineup. They don’t care about defense or wins this is a quad A team and they are trying to develop players.
They have not cared about wins for six years.
May, not historically a strike out pitcher, struck out the side in the 2nd inning
Cruz struck out swinging which isn’t surprising, Bart never took the bat off his shoulders and IKF swung on a pitch nowhere close to the plate
Management needs Cruz to hire a personal hitting coach over the winter and whoever the GM is during the offseason, he needs to find a catcher who can at least hit his weight
If there was a catcher available and their is kinda 1 a old JTR the teams with more financial resources would will get him. Probably going back to Philly if not the highest bidder the Pirates can’t compete with. Shouldn’t even if they could as they need 3 power bats and have positions in greater need than catcher.
Other than JTR I would rather bet on improving Davis and having all star weak platoon Bart. Catching free agents are pretty bad. Okay 1 or 2 maybe but not moving the needle.
I think that the key with Realmuto who has clearly gone downhill is whether he will settle for a two year contract with the Phillies.
Reynolds who has the highest average playing in Fenway of any current Pirate is sitting in favor of Canario
TheMan 3
And our manager raises the white flag by bringing in Holderman who should be DFAed
I am in complete agreement on Holderman.
He’s not clearly not the same pitcher he was before his latest injury and should be dfa when Lawrence is brought back up.
Kelly should have used Bart to pinch hit for Canario when the bases were loaded in the 8th inning.
Canario did hit a homer in his previous plate appearanc but is too much of a free swinger for a time in the game when were down 3 runs.
Reynolds pinch hit for Davis so he could played in right field and Bart was going to cstch anyway
Sitting Reynolds for Canario good call eh
Paul wants these wins. I want draft lottery odds. Call up Devaney. Call up Yorke cook. Let Jack face LHP. Who cares at this point? Every pirates fan other than myself i know.
Many other Pirate fans than you are not particularly interested in basically all of the suspects in the minor leagues as this is not a big game to us.
We will be happy with a competing team with a winning record.
And one or two places in the draft will not generally make a big difference to almost all Pirates fans.
We would rather have a good feeling for 2026 by actually seeing winning ways in September happening because some of the young players played well.
You are dead wrong. If this team ever wins it will be because of prospects. Prospects are the only thing that matters.
1 spot is huge.
2021 if they don’t pick #1 you probably don’t have Bubba.
2022 you have Green instead of TJ.
2023 Crews instead of Skenes.
2024 1 spot you probably get KG because Washington is stupid but 2 spots he goes to Detroit.
2025 1 spot Miami takes SH.
If it wasn’t for 1 spot Pirates wouldn’t have a chance of sniffing 80 wins this decade. The drop off to the spot after them was drastic. It’s not like well if they didn’t get the best college pitcher anyone has ever seen they could have just got the 2nd best! Darn these missed KG by 1 spot fortunately there’s plenty of 5 tool SS available in this draft!
how many prospects drafted by Ben have made an impact on this team and I am referring to position players not pitchers
One
Nick Gonzalez
Paul-I think that what AI is saying is that real difference makers are rare and one spot can make a difference.
AI-2021 draft If Bubba was so good why not pick him in the second round?Yea,they have to pay him more money based on the round, but low ball all the rest of the picks or pick ones that they can sign
2022 how has TJ worked out with his stellar projection?scouting or development failure?
2023 by this year the draft was an absolute crap shoot that the Pirates won
2024 you could be right but they lucked out that he was left.
Or does he eventually become another TJ?
2025 this High School pitcher dropped low even though he was so good and what often happens to a high school pitcher? There is absolutely no guarantee for him and they needed position players. When is Cherington going to realize that?
I understand what you said but the fans deserve a winner and now not in the 2030’s.
There’s no mlb bats because the Pirates stunk at development and fans believe it’s something that can be fixed instantly but it normally takes years which is why most gms are given years.
Draft odds are same as draft spot. You want the highest odds to get the highest spot. More $ more talent.
Bubba was good. Many in industry knew it. He was ranked as a 1st round player. Most people thought he was going to go to college though. Once the 1st round was over there was little threat another team would draft him. It took 3m to get him and they didn’t have the $. Think what it took for Pirates to get him. 1 they had to have the #1 pick which game them the most available $ of any team. 2 they had to draft someone who was willing to sign for 2m less than the #1 pick was worth. With their picks before Bubba they took players that other teams could sign.
Also the draft isn’t totally a draft. You negotiate with players before draft even starts. You know 1 if they are willing to sign with you and 2 what it will take. So let’s say Colorado drafted Bubba 1st round. Bubba says I’m a east coast guy. You can’t develop pitchers and even if you could that altitude will cost me tens of millions in free agency. I’m going back to school. It would destroy their entire draft and the agent who represents many many players will remember what Colorado did to them. So not every team could draft Bubba. Only ones that had the opportunity are ones where he wanted to go to and had the $. You aren’t going to sign with a team that can’t develop pitching. And you aren’t going to turn down being a 2 sport star at Clemson for less than 3m.
TJ is working out just fine. Average age AA player is like 24. TJ just turned 21 in June. He’s been hitting over.300 the past mouth or 2. Reasonable K rate actually it’s good. Little pop and his power was always projected to come late. Stealing bases. On track to be much better than Gonzales. Not sure what fans expect. He was never a SS. Never a MVP. He was a 1 and a half tool player when drafted and clearly the player you would draft. Seen as a good everyday 2b and still trending that way. Ceiling was occasional all star.
This is the classic arguement with you as you are aiming years down some magical road as if all the night stars will magically align and meanwhile Skenes is lost to another team.
Your argument has been going on for six years now and how has it worked so far?
And many GM’s do not get six years and if they do should not have.
It really does not matter what you and I say nor what anyone else on this site says unless his name is Bob Nutting.
My guess is if they play well in September Cherington stays.
If not,not.
they needed position players. When is Cherington going to realize that?
Worst mindset that fans have. You never ever ever draft for need. If a pitcher is clearly the best player available in the first round when you are picking 20 years in a row you draft a pitcher with 20 consecutive 1st round picks.
KG is a special talent. If he was in 2020 draft he goes #1. 2021 he goes #1 and it would take full slot so no Bubba. 2022 he probably goes 3 or 4 and you definitely take him over TJ. 1 and 2 were sons of mlb players and the stupid teams get all giddy over them which could be a good and to their thinking it is. Having a father they received the best coaching $ could buy and had a MLB player personally coaching them. I see it as a negative. What’s left for me to develop? Very limited ceiling.
I’d taken KG #1 in 2025. If no KG I’d taken SH #1. Lot of stupid teams drafting high.
They need position players and who says that one is better than the other?Lots of chance with a high school pitcher and even if he is the best prospect when will he reach the ML’s?
College position players if there were any would be much better for the team. There may not have been any close but for some reason all these other teams skipped over him.
We will see if he makes it.
In 2030.
It’s not a argument at all. It’s fact. A team in Pittsburgh can’t buy the impact free agents needed. With Nutting as owner it’s possibly even worse. There is only 1 way to get better and it is with young players.
They didn’t waste a year of Skenes. There was nothing they could do. There was no one available to trade for that would made a difference. There was no one available to sign who would made a difference. Heck even in a fantasy where Pittsburgh could out bid these mega cities those players have stunk.
They absolutely didn’t waste a year of Skenes because they didn’t have any say in the matter. Literally nothing they could have done.
I copy pasted the free agent list for next year and there is nothing they can do. 2027 I looked at that list as well and guess what….
Trades? Forget about it. Have you seen what these gms are willing to give up un trades? We can’t sign a Soto Harper Judge Ohtani or even a Tucker Bregman Schwarber right? I never took you to be one of those fantasy land fans. So how can we afford to trade a Bubba KG?
The only chance at winning is coming from the farm system. If KG is a star the Pirates win. If Bubba is a star Pirates win. If SH is able to replace Skenes the Pirates keep the winning going. If the kid from the Skenes trade replaces KG the pirates keep winning. It’s the only way.
The Pirates. Baseball America. Me. Everyone I talked with who knows how to scout.
4 of the 5 teams who passed on him are 4 of the 5 worst scouting and development teams in baseball. And 3 pitchers were taken ahead of him so they didn’t think much of the bats.
Don’t just say they should have taken a bat. Give us a name so we can make fun of you as the guy who took so and so over a great pitcher. Maybe pitcher gets hurt which is a very high risk and your hitter becomes a all star and you look like a genius. I wanted a name at day of draft. Will accept one now. I don’t want to here they passed on Mike Trout 5 years later.
I might end up wrong but at least I gave names. I said pirates got best player in draft 3 years in row and I am right on first 2.
I never said that it was not the only way.
Cherington’s way has not worked for six years.
He did exactly what he should have done with Skenes.
It does take time to right the ship but if you look at the records of teams like the Diamondbacks they reached the WS quickly in a couple of years after having a horrendous year.
The HS pitcher taken this year was probably available because many teams do not take HS pitchers in the first round.
What you say may be good in theory but let’s see how these players perform in AAA before we profess them to be ML all stars.
Cheringtons way worked great. Pirates are exactly where they need to be. It took awhile as it should have. Diamondbacks didn’t start from having rock bottom development.
I don’t want to see any prospects in AAA. AAA is for losers.
You give names because you know the top amateur players.
Few of the rest of us know them,so we have to talk in generalities.
ML players are much more familiar to many of us.
I understand that most of these teams take the best player available. But it is a greater chance with HS players no matter what you say.I know that this 2025 pitcher is the second coming of Sandy Koufax. What my point is that there had to be a college position player available at almost any position that is at least somewhat comparable to SH especially given the greater chance of failure by HS players.
I did check it out by one commenter and he had Hernandez second but the Marlins pick shortstop Arquette out of Oregon fourth. This is what I am talking about. It seems to me that pitchers can progress more rapidly but are four years in development behind the shortstop and much more prone to injury that can lose two years like what happened to Painter with the Phillies.
You seem to think that Hernandez is way better than Arquette but given the realities and the potential for usefulness on the Pirates it seems to me to be potentially much closer than what may be thought.
The Pirates are last in hitting in the ML’s and Cherington does not have many options as you say but to get position players through the draft.
I don’t expect people to be scouting or draft experts. I think my track record should earn some trust though. And unfortunately if you aren’t going to do the research yourself you need to trust someone because you can use generalities. For example SH is the best hs pitching prospect I ever seen. There is no as good or just a hair less or even almost as good player available. And the best 2 hitters were taken before pirates pick. The best hitter in this draft wouldn’t have been taken until 10th in last year’s draft ironically to the same team. The hitters available to Pirates wouldn’t have gone until somewhere around 15th. Would’ve been 8 and 15 in 2023. Your giving up a lot of talent.
Now 2022 2021 Willits who went number 1 in 2025 goes around pick 4 and the 3rd 4th best kids go not far after that before pick 10.
Pirates probably take Willits instead of TJ. Heck might take Willits over Davis. Definitely over Gonzales.
But they don’t take Willits over SH. They take SH over Davis Gonzales TJ easily like don’t even waste 3 seconds thinking about it.
If the Yankees had SH I and believe they would trade Gonzales Davis TJ for him right now. I’m surprised the pirates didn’t lose half the front office to high fiving and chest bumping celebration when SH was sitting there at pick 6. They are probably like me a laugh at how awful these other teams are.
SH best hs pitching prospect I ever seen. Arquette I can find between picks 10 and 15 almost any draft.
Well see. I feel good about this one. I can’t find any source that does this as well as I do. Even teams don’t. If I find a source I will use it because I been doing this hobby too long need to make time for something new. I’m not right every single time just more often than anyone else.
You say pitchers take more time to develop and have much higher injury risk. I agree 100 percent. By that thinking wouldn’t you want to take more of them? And you need 5 starters 8 relievers. And like you said injuries it takes like 30 at least to get through a season. Only need 1 SS. And you currently have the best prospect in baseball who happens to play SS. I’m failing to see why pirates needed to draft a SS.
What you have said in the past is true, good shortstops can easily be moved anywhere including centerfield.
The caveat is though that you need to put them there early in their minor league career. It is a lot different than playing shortstop.
That was my point on that.
If you think that Arquette is not more than a middle first round choice then they should have done what they did.
97 pa has .207 average and it is .167 last 10 games so not like he struggled to start and got better. Small sample but something to look at. That’s A ball not AA.
In other drafts he wouldn’t go top 10. In this draft well before 10 he was worthy. Before Horowitz arrived they might have took him over SH. Even probably would have. Would have been a huge mistake. He could stick at SS but it’s probably a coin flip at best and I would bet he doesn’t. And being placed at SS and being a good SS are completely different things. Too slow to play center. He played 2b in college so that’s probably where he ends up. Does have arm for 3b so that works as well. Doesn’t have awful swing and miss but has swing and miss concerns.
If SH wasn’t there I would have been fine with taking him. Although there was a half dozen hs ss available with higher ceilings. Few were zero doubt ss. More risk in bat though.
Bubba is still a prospect but he’s in MLB now. I have SH as best pitching prospect in baseball. We got the best position player prospect in baseball.
Arquette is closer to David Arquette in talent than he is to KG.
Again Kelly takes his moves out of sheltons playbook. This guy will be a disaster if he’s brought back.
His record is around .500 so Nutting will probably want him back. If they are not contending then they don’t have to be a buyer at the deadline and spend money.
500 definitely bring him back. That’s incredible with this team.
I said that when he took over that if he finished 500 he would be rehired.
It is true that he does have some Sheltonesque tendencies but again we do not know how much the computer is the King of the Hill.
One thing that Shelton said often and Cherington also is “ we have to get better”.
Doh!Ya think so?
Kelly has the energy that Shelton did not.Shelton may have just been tired of losing. It would affect anybody.
He also does not seem to put up with crap yet is patient enough with young players.
He is two games below 500 but for the most part they have been much more competitive than the 12-26 Shelton team.
And who would they get?
I think that even if Cherington goes Nutting will probably keep Kelly because they are better,he is a Pittsburgher,he is inexpensive, and it would provide some continuity.
My guess is that he will unless the Pirates fall apart during September.
He’ll be back unless Nutting does something stupid which is always possible. Manager doesn’t matter though unless the players stop playing for him. No idea how Kelly gets so much effort. Brutal season to play out.
Manager can make a big difference, mainly in lineups and relief pitching making sure the pitcher is on and having someone warmed up to replace him if not.
Manager sets the tone for the team and provides enthusiasm.
Manager rewards players who hustle and play well and sits those who don’t hustle .
Not so much anymore with the DH,but a good one knows how to use his bench players to maximize fielding and pinch hitting in the late innings of close games.
If managers did not make a difference there would be none in the HOF.
Just because there is not a specific stat to define these things and others does not mean that any manager can manage any team to a winning record.
Hall of fame is past tense. They used to make a difference. They’ll still go in as they should. And I said they set the the tone. Lineup 1 is set by data 2 still doesn’t matter enough to matter. Everyone on Pirates is hovering around average so it doesn’t matter where they bat. Just put the below average ones at bottom. Relievers are set by data. Usage is scripted by matchups.
That may very be the case and I do not have a problem with a computer saying the recommended lineup and relievers.
But a good manager exerts his control albeit carefully.
He knows what relievers have been pitching well and not to keep a bad performer in no matter what some computer says.
He knows that ballplayers are only human and most are creatures of habit who do not want to be placed in the lineup by jumping around on a pogo stick.
Teams like the Phillies keep a basic lineup unless general changes are made for a period of time based on how well a hitter is hitting or a specific platoon situation.
The Pirates have such a poor hitting lineup basically throughout that it may not make all that much of a difference basically as you have said.
But in order to be a good hitting team eventually they need to operate like the Phillies do with appropriate changes depending on the situation.
And as I said several months ago if Cherington wants them to do otherwise he should be fired just like Klenchak was with the Phillies several years ago.
Sounds like common sense that any average intelligence person can do. Like I said manager doesn’t really matter.
Then the team is being run by the analytics department and instead of firing them they should go without a manager and let the computer make the lineup and change pitchers.
You will never get a good manager operating under those conditions.
And a good manager over a bad manager/ slash computer is good for a minimum of 5 wins per year.
There are no statistics to prove it unless one studies good managers versus bad ones and good decisions versus stupid ones.
No the analytics department just gives the manager the information.
Which is fine then.
Then the manager manages and does have the power to make changes.
Any team would be stupid not to take advantage of the substantial more information that is available over the last 15 years.
It just does not make sense to me though why Shelton and to some extent Kelly then seem to switch up the lineup on.a regular basis for seemingly no reason.
