Acquired from the White Sox at the trade deadline, Austin Slater made only two appearances in the pinstripes before he suffered a left hamstring strain. Slater was placed on the 10-day injured list on August 5, and he’ll unfortunately be missing far more than just the 10-day minimum, as Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner) that Slater will need 4-6 weeks of recovery time.
It’s a tough break for both Slater and the Yankees, as the nine-year veteran was expected to bring some needed right-handed hitting balance to New York’s outfield mix. Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham both hit from the left side and Jasson Dominguez is a switch-hitter, plus Aaron Judge is still limited to DH duty as he fully recovers from a right flexor strain. The idea was that Slater would primarily platoon with Dominguez in left field, but that plan will now have to be put on hold until September.
Even if Slater had been healthy, Giancarlo Stanton was expected to get some outfield time in the wake of Judge’s injury, as the Yankees weren’t going to keep Stanton’s bat out of the lineup entirely. Stanton’s return to the grass has come today, as the slugger is penciled in as the Yankees’ starting right fielder for today’s game with the Astros. With left-hander Framber Valdez on the mound, the Yankees are utilizing most of their right-handed bats in the starting lineup, leaving Dominguez, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Austin Wells on the bench.
It marks the first time since September 14, 2023 that Stanton has played a position other than designated hitter. Multiple lower-body injuries limited Stanton’s time in the outfield, and even his move into a seeming full-time DH role came at a physical cost. Stanton didn’t make his 2025 debut until June 16 as he was dealing with torn tendons in both elbows.
With all of this in mind, Stanton is expected to be used only sparingly in the outfield, since the Yankees naturally want to keep him healthy for the stretch drive. Stanton has hit .268/.345/.528 with 10 homers over his 142 plate appearances this season, with a 139 wRC+ that would be his highest since the 2020 campaign.
New York needs all the help it can get as the club tries to get its season back on track. The Yankees are only 19-30 over their last 49 games, dropping from first place in the AL East to just a half-game lead over the surging Guardians for the final AL wild card slot. Relief pitching is one of the chief culprits for the Yankees’ slide, as the team’s bullpen 4.90 ERA since June 13 ranks 26th of the 30 big league teams.
The acquisitions of Camilo Doval, David Bednar, and Jake Bird at the trade deadline was supposed to stop the bleeding on the relief front, yet Bird has already been optioned to Triple-A and Doval and Bednar have each had some shaky moments in their brief stints as Yankees. Devin Williams has also continued to struggle, and he picked up the loss by allowing three runs (two earned) during the 10th inning of yesterday’s 5-3 loss to the Astros.
After years as a relief ace with the Brewers, Williams now has a 5.73 ERA over 44 innings with New York. To put it in perspective, Williams allowed only 48 total earned runs in 235 2/3 innings over his six seasons prior to 2025, but he has already been touched for 28 ER in his lone season with the Yankees.
Given these numbers, Kirschner opined that Williams might not even last the season in the Bronx, as the Yankees could opt to just release him in a few weeks once some other relievers (i.e. Fernando Cruz, Ryan Yarbrough) return from the IL. Such a scenario would’ve seemed unthinkable heading into the 2025 season, and many of Williams’ secondary metrics are in line with his career norms. It seemed like he had gotten on track during a dominant stretch from mid-May until the All-Star break, but Williams has a 10.38 ERA over his last 8 2/3 innings, and has allowed at least one earned run in each of his last five outings.
At the very least, it would seem like Williams can’t be trusted for any more high-leverage work. (Even last night, he likely wouldn’t have been used in the 10th inning if other pitchers hadn’t been unavailable.) A more extreme move like a release might hinge on how the rest of the bullpen is performing or if the Yankees feel they have enough depth, but as Kirschner notes, there is already virtually no chance New York would re-sign Williams in free agency this winter. If the team is going to cut ties anyway and Williams may not even be a candidate for a postseason roster at this point, a release in September might not be out of the question.
We should of got Castro and Bader instead of Slater anyway.
Not really. There aren’t enough roster spots. Then they will have to DFA another reliever. Bader costed the Phillies their top 8 prospect.
Who cares about a top 8 prospect? The Phillies didn’t trade Miller or Painter. The whole point of a farm system and a front office is you should be about to scout, sign, draft, and develop new guys to replace them. The Dodgers have notable prospects almost every year the Yankees have no excuse.
@Black
And the Yanks have spent plenty of perished currency using the very tactics you suggest. they had Bader before and it didn’t work out. They might have their reasons.
Yanks just picked up a game on the Jay’s and Sox tonight..I think they’re gonna go on a run now, the Jay’s not playing well and the Sox will cool off.

Stanton’s on the outfield grass? What could possibly go wrong?
Get him off that outfield grass! Just walking on it probably gets him injured.
If I’m any of the Astros better hitters, I would consider trying to hit more balls to right field today. Make Stanton work. Maybe he commits some errors or poor play, and even if not, just try to make him run around a bit. Anything that might tire him out a little can only benefit Houston since, to this point, Stanton is the Yankees second best hitter.
As talented as MLB hitters are, this isn’t beer league softball. Houston should consider starting their LHHs and RHH who naturally go oppo, but the hitters themselves should use their typical approach.
For their part, Yankees pitchers should work the right side of the plate (pitcher’s perspective) to keep the ball away from Stanton. Which would suggest Astros hitters should look to go to left field.
The game is afoot!
You’re right, this isn’t beer league softball, because those players wouldn’t have the skill to hit to all fields.
Good major league hitters can hit to all parts of the field with intent. That’s why I prefaced my comment by stating the better Astros hitters. Guys like Jeremy Pena, Jake Meyers, maybe a Carlos Correa or a Jose Altuve can all hit the other way when they want.
Better start hitting em out there early. He won’t be out there too long. Lol.
After seeing him walk to first and get doubled up, I cannot believe he will be in the field
If they release Williams, it will be addition by subtraction. When he’s on the mound the Yankees are doomed, and he’s not just going through a bad couple weeks. Anyone else would have been released or sent down by now. Suddenly it’s looking like he’ll probably have to take a one year prove it deal in free agency.
Yeah, and Williams will go back to Milwaukee and they’ll fix his arm angle so that he’s not tipping the changeup and he’ll be back to unhittable.
Yeah thinking Devin can’t pitch here in NY. Not such a big surprise, the list continues.
The Mets “broke” Williams during the 2024 playoff season.
His infallibility and swagger was gone after that series.
The “can’t pitch in NY” thing is just a repeated bout of inflated ego by a certain subsection of New Yorkers.
“Hit it to Stanton”, like it’s easy to call your shots. I don’t think he touched 4 balls tonight, Yankee pitchers just busted nighties inside and lefties away..Yankees took care of Houston tonigbt
He’s not tipping. It’s been a command issue all season falling behind the count with his changeup. Hitters then sit on his fastball.
It’s not even that. The home run he allowed last night was on a changeup. He’s all sort of messed up.
He was mentally damaged goods when the Yankees got him.
All the love the Brewers fans had for him left after the 2024 series in Milwaukee.
He doesn’t need a pitching coach. He needs a confidence coach, a performance coach, ie, a shrink.
Hitters wait on Williams’ CHANGEUP, not fastball. Look back on play-by-play and you’ll see he gets outs on his fastball and gives up HRs and RBI singles on his change. Changeups are for starters, not RPs. We need “slammers” who slam the door shut not closers: my granny “closed” doors!
@Yankee in Italy Tommy Kahnle would beg to differ. Hader, Kimbrel, and Chapman among others all throw changeups.
Hi, I agree with you but Hou-Yanks August 9th: Hader gets 3 outs on sliders/sinker 96 mph.
Williams: Correa RBI single changeup 81, Walter OUT 4 seamer 94, Diaz 2nd OUT 4 seamer 93, Trammell HR change 82, Dubòn OUT 4 seamer 94.
Hader: slider 82, OUT,Goldschmidt OUT sinker 96, Grisham OUT sinker 96. Hader win, Williams loss. The changeup has to get guys swinging out in front. If you can’t fool ’em, furgettaboutit!
If Williams is released on 9/1 or later, can the acquiring team put him on their playoff roster, or does he need to be on the new team’s roster by 8/31 in order to qualify for the playoffs?
Worst case scenario is that the Yankees release him, an AL playoff contender picks him up, fixes his mechanical issues and the Yankees end up facing him in the playoffs.
Williams is not done by any means. He’s just having an awful season at the wrong time (going into free agency). Perhaps he’s just not built to pitch in the pressure cooker of New York. It wouldn’t be the first time (see Sonny Gray). Williams definitely lost a lot of future earnings with his play this year, but he will sign a 1-year prove it deal this offseason to try to get back on track. He’s too good to be “all done” at this point of his career. He’ll just never play for New York again. It would be classic Milwaukee Brewers to sign him to a cheap 1-year deal next year and turn him back into the unhittable weapon he was prior to the trade.
Incentive-laden, one-year contract based on IP.
Released on 9/1 or later, then signs with another ballclub? Not eligible for the postseason.
Pretty much every player in most every sport already has a sports psychologist. Not even kidding. .
I thought we had the guru of pitching coaches…..
Blake does, for the most part, seem to make a lot of lemonade from the lemons Cashman sends him, but not every lemon is sweet.
The last time I saw a reliever so lost when the team kept running him out there was Tyler Clippard. Thankfully, he was traded. Williams is a sunk cost and there aren’t enough games left for this experiment anymore.
Hold your breath Yankees fans, if a ball comes Stanton’s way he could single-handedly turn a double into an inside the parker
He also could have his knees fall off if he runs too hard
There’s no shortage of hold our breath moments when the ball is put in play this season.
Every pitch of any Yankee game has a heightened potential to end in a defensive or base running catastrophe.
You can always watch the team from Queens as more often than not you’ll see why LOLmets endures.
Or any ball hit over Bellinger’s head
“position over than designated hitter.”
Lots of extra bases will be taken with Stanton trying to chase down baseballs !🤣
Hello? Yankees fans it’s for you. It’s the Hindenburg. It wants it’s act back.
Oh, the humanity!
Devin Williams’ performance is what you get when you allow Yankees players to have beards. George Steinbrenner would be disgusted.
Oh agreed they look homeless. BTW. Georgie would’ve traded for A’s Mason Miller no matter the cost…
Some people still follow the rule, Ryan McMahon went clean after coming to the Yankees
Your beloved Boss is still dead, just like Billy Martin.
Good time to dump Boone.
A few years ago would of a great time to dump Bum Goon!
Not sure anyone is old enough but remember Xavier hernandez with the Yankees in 1994? His situation is very similar Devin Williams.
Xavier had a few elite reliever seasons then he came to new york and totally dropped the ball. No pun intended
Robluca: I remember it well. Some guys just don’t mesh with NYC. Williams is an even bigger bust due to past performance and expected role. I heard Boone’s justification for using Williams, apologie not accepted.
Just looking at his baseball reference page he threw 111 innings out of the pen in 92, that’s wild….different times.
I’d be shocked if Williams was DFAd. He’s had some slumps before and has bounced back. Right now, I don’t know who the NYY closer is, or if it is a committee, or worse yet, I’m not sure if the players know their role.
IMHO, if the NYY decide on the BP rotation, and the players know their roles, they will all be better off.
DFA on September 1 when he isn’t eligible for anybody else’s postseason roster.
Shocked, shocked!
For anyone defending Aaron Boone and criticizing the Yankee fans that want him fired, look no further than last night’s game decision to put him in with the game on the line (again) when he has shown no ability to close out games in the past several outings.
Boone should’ve never made it to the press conference while still holding the title of manager for the NY Yankees. His reasoning for putting Williams in confirmed his level of ineptitude as the Yankees manager.
He should have been fired when he called for Cortez in Game 1.
He should’ve been fired in 2022!!!!!! But I agree, the Cortez move should’ve enlightened Cashman that Boone isn’t as good as they think.
Should’ve never fired Girardi!
I expect numerous triples to right field by the Atro’s today
Boone always goes to his short list of “trusted” relievers, same as Joe Torre. This enables them to both maximize their regular season victories while minimizing their postseason victories. They’re not the only team to do this but it is kind of obvious with them. If they stayed on the bubble and didn’t overuse their pitchers, they might have a shot. Last year, as every year, they did get some help from the dumpires. They could still be deep into it this year but we’ll have to see.
Boone is a trolley driver; he’ll bring it into the barn as long as it stays on the track.
The team as a whole suck, nobody can win with this team.
It’s made up of homerun hitters, for shock and awe.
You need ball players to win in the playoffs
Yes, he wasn’t a good enough “communicator” to the players……Cash wanted somebody who could relate to the new and coddled generation of players…..Girardi was 10 times the manager Boone is…..
Phillies got a whole lot better after Girardi got fired. A lot better.
mab – True, but doesn’t mean he wasn’t good for the Yankees. Maybe he didn’t jive as well with their clubhouse. The only thing we heard of with Girardi and the Yanks was that he was hard on Gary Sanchez, who deserved to be ridiculed for how crappy and lazy he was as a catcher at the time
I agree on Sanchez 100%.
Can we make it a package deal and also boot Cashman? Seriously, it’s beyond old watching the team ship out piles of young pitchers every season. Build up the team of pitching coaches around Blake, develop the young arms and use the savings on some contact hitters who can field. The Rosario trade was beyond pointless.
An unexpected, but logical move would be to sell high on Rodon this off-season given the extensive injury history.
I am absolutely NOT defending Aaron Boone. That said, I seriously wonder just how much Brian Cashman is “ghost managing” from the general manager’s office? It wouldn’t be the first time, either. Devin Williams (and lots of other acquisitions over the years) were Cashman’s doing and I often wonder if there are often directives from above about running players out on the field to try and redeem signings in the public eye? As has already been mentioned in this forum, there are just some players who are NOT cut out for playing in New York. On the other hand, I am a 68 year old Yankee fan and I believe in “the curse” rearing its ugly head with the Yanks. Changing the facial hair policy to appease Devin Williams was a bad idea. The Yankee “gods” are not looking down quietly on that one! The Yankees need a manager who can manage his players through tough love and by holding them accountable from time to time! The newer generation of MLB managers (save for a few standouts) are poor taskmasters who just want to be friends with and coddle their over-priced talent! Very sad to see what has happened to this team! If they make the post-season, I’m not sure that they’ll make it too far at all! One can only hope but then again, it’s not looking too good. Finally, GET Stanton off of the field … losing him before the post-season (if they make it) would decimate the Yanks’ chances of advancing too far in the play-offs. George is literally screaming from the grave!
Donny is your typical talk radio caller/listener. Longs for the good old days when top ballplayers avoided the Yankees because of “The Bronx Zoo” cultivated by the tabloids and The Boss.
Devin “the disaster” williams
Should be demoted to aa
Does anyone think they should have made a deal including Grisholm, prospects for a better SS,2b or starter?
May just be a fantasy idea but, seems like a loss not dealing him. I dont think the Yankees have a plan for him after this season.
When Spencer Jones is called up and stays Grisham will be the back up OF. McMahon is actually playing a little better than I anticipated but I certainly wouldn’t extend him. DJL 2.0! All the other trades Cashman made except Bednar is pretty suspect at this point! Bednar is a bulldog! All the rest are lap dogs from what I’ve witnessed. Cashman and Boone both need to be replaced but since Little Hal doesn’t have a clue, they will both be back until Hal sells the team.
Yanks aren’t going to give a September call-up to a phenom who’s not even on the 40-man roster.
Lapdogs more like chihuahuas fit in Paris’ purse
I know that ultimately, players have to perform, but at what point does Boone have to take responsibility for his part in this? Sure, Aaron Hicks was awful, but Boone put his name on the lineup card 132 times. Williams has proclaimed that “he stinks right now”. Everyone except manure for brains (Boone) knows that. Williams should only pitch if we have a three run lead, and we should always have another pitcher ready at the first sign of struggles. It doesn’t matter how many pitchers we have because Boone can not manage a bullpen. Fire Aaron Boone now!
If they release Devin Williams, a lot of our bullpen isuues/issues in general will be solved. He is not reliable in high leverage situations. They can try using him in low leverage situations, but he gives up too many runs. He is not valuable anymore. I do find it weird that he pitched great in Milwaukee, but cannot pitch for/in New York. Management issue? Can’t handle the Bronx?
Ed Whitson says hi.
Williams is done, playing NYY & Stadium too much to handle now. Some “just can’t make it there”🎹.
Boone is done if Yanks don’t win division & AL.
Boobe needs to be on the same bus as Williams. Can you DFA a manager?
I’m shocked that Austin Slater is hurt again because he’s been just the model of health until now.
Now I understand why the Yankees’ deadline acquisitions didn’t cost much prospect capital.
Just a note for Yankee fans. Doval will always be an adventure in his appearances. I’ve watched almost every appearance he made for the Giants. Hardly ever has a”clean” inning anymore.
“Doval and Bednar have each had some shaky moments in their brief stints as Yankees.”
Yankee fans better get used to it with Doval . . . he’s a headcase. When your team is coated in flammables, bring in Camilo with the match.
Yanks should have made an offer for Donovan and maton from the cards
Cardinals had a big ask for Donovan. St. Louis was never getting any of the top 5 prospects from NY.
Slater has never been able to stay healthy
Who cares? Healthy or not, his impact is negligible. I’m not sure why he was acquired in the first place. We could have signed Greg Allen and kept our prospect, or just not traded Peraza to clear a roster spot for Slater who we don’t need and is also not good.
Countdown to Stanton missing the rest of the season begins now!
Williams is a joke. He pitches like he’s skipping stones.
Devin Williams thinks a clean inning is when one of the umpires looks at his hands and gives him his glove back.
Yankees made a mistake by not trading Williams at the deadline. It’s not working there period, and having him on the roster will only lead to difficult choices and can mess things up if they even get to the postseason. Someone would have taken him. Now they just have a ton of talented arms, but in unfamiliar roles, and can’t expect them to all be studs.
Why does everyone know this except his manager?! Fire Boone.
Release Deven period.
Happy Old-Timers Game day! Plenty of interesting perspectives from the booth.
Today’s official game was Williams’ to close after 16 pitches yesterday. Luckily, Boone wised up and used Bednar who only needed 23 pitches to record 5 outs.
