The Yankees have optioned right-hander Jake Bird to Triple-A, per a team announcement. A corresponding move has not yet been announced, though ESPN’s Jorge Castillo notes that right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. is expected back from the injured list today and could take Bird’s roster spot.
Bird, 29, was one of the Yankees’ trio of potential high-leverage bullpen additions acquired ahead of the trade deadline last week. With a 4.73 ERA and 3.89 FIP to go along with a 26.3% strikeout rate for the Rockies this year, Bird showed himself capable of putting up at least decent numbers even when playing half his games at Coors Field. That was enough to intrigue the Yankees, and they surrendered second base prospect Roc Riggio and pitching prospect Ben Shields in order to acquire him. While Bird lacks the track record of dominance that David Bednar and Camilo Doval both offer, he comes with three years of team control after 2025 and the hope was that he could help deepen a bullpen mix that will lose Devin Williams and Luke Weaver to free agency this winter.
It’s only been a few games, but the early returns have not been great. The Yankees found themselves swept at the hands of the Marlins in the days following the deadline and have yet to win a game in August. That slump has left them with just a 1.5 game lead over the Rangers for the final AL Wild Card spot, and Bird has been in the thick of those troubles. After surrendering four runs to the Marlins while recording just one out in his Yankees debut, the right-hander surrendered three runs (two earned) while recording two outs against Texas last night. Those six runs allowed in a combined two innings of work across three appearances leave him with a 27.00 ERA for his Yankees career, and now he’s headed to the minor leagues as New York waits for him to get right.
While an effective version of Bird would undoubtedly make the Yankees’ bullpen better, it’s hard to argue they’re light on talent at the moment. Williams, Weaver, Bednar, and Doval have all had worrying moments at points throughout the season, but each has a strong track record of success in the late innings. And now it seems they’ll be reinforced later today by the return of Leiter, who has been sidelined for the past month due to a stress fracture in the fibular head of his left leg. Acquired from the Cubs at last year’s deadline, Leiter’s 4.46 ERA in 41 appearances leaves something to be desired but his underlying metrics remain brilliant. He’s struck out 29.1% of his opponents this year while walking a career-low 7.6%, and he’s paired all that with a career-best 49.0% ground ball rate. If Leiter keeps looking that good in his return to action, that elevated ERA should come back down in a hurry as he helps avoid further bullpen meltdowns in the Bronx.
LMAO!!!! Fire Cashman now. I think Yankees traded away one of the better prospects for Bird, too. It was 2B Roc R. It’s time the Yankees start thinking about trading Jones or Lombard they have zero sense of urgency, zero!!! Judge is not getting any younger. When do they deal away the future and win now for the present.
I have no idea why the Yankees or Dodgers ever deal with prospects. They don’t have to. If someone doesn’t work out, then they can just sign a FA or three the next offseason to replace them. Small market teams HAVE to depend on prospects, big market teams can just buy the ones that work out for their prospects. No need to really gamble that way.
Weird. The Dodgers “deal with prospects” in order to fill holes on the roster – like Andy Pages. They also deal with them to make trades.
That’s only because the Dodgers have practically an entire roster on the injured list. The only thing the Dodgers should be using prospects for is currency in trades. They don’t need to gamble with Pages, they can trade him to a small market team for their CF and let them gamble. If Pages works out, they can come back in three years and get him back again.
Seeing how well they’ve played without Judge, a guy they drafted and developed as a prospect, perhaps they should listen to hiflew’s advice.
Exactly. Besides signing free agents you need prospects to fill out your roster as well as to trade.
Where’s the “gamble” for those teams?
Bob Nutting has never gambled anything in Pittsburgh, he has a very, very profitable sure thing going there.
hiflew: At some future date, the Dodgers might consult with you about how best to utilize their prospects.
Most likely, that date will be the 12th of Never.
Agree with you that they can be more liberal moving their prospects. But they still need at least of few guys in their starting lineup that haven’t reached arbitration yet. The salary of Shohei, Freeman and Betts and the likes do add up. Why pay 110% tax on a player who you have to sign when someone in your farm will give the same protection at 1/10th the cost? Michael Conforto signing is a perfect example: 1 year and $17 million. Dodgers should be filling that with an OF prospect. Seems like a silly price to pay if you have something worth seeing that’s on the farm
Dismissing the idea of having young players in your organization is just silly.
I didn’t dismiss that idea at all. I said to use then as currency to buy arbitration eligible players from teams like the Pirates, Marlins, Twins, Rays, and many others that don’t want to pay them. That way you get guys that have proven they can play in the majors in exchange for guys that have not. If those guys you traded away work out, then just trade for them again in three years if you need them because those other teams will not want to pay them then either.
hiflew: Nobody’s arguing that you should dismiss any ideas.
Instead, we’re merely dismissing your ideas about prospects.
You do realize Aaron Judge came up from the Yankees’ system right?
You do realize that 100 other players that didn’t turn into Aaron Judge also came up in the Yankees system too. I said prospects were a gamble. Sometimes gambles pay off, sometimes they pay off big. But the point is that the Yankees are set up to where they don’t have to gamble, they can take the sure thing. If they traded Aaron Judge to the Pirates in 2015, don’t you think they could have gotten him back by now? Do you think the Pirates would be paying him big bucks?
For every Aaron Judge there’s an Andrew Brackman, Eric Duncan, Oswald Peraza, Jesus Montero and Manny Banuelos. The list goes on and on.
1,000 percent. Helps to be able buy whoever you want to fill any holes.
I would imagine at least for the Dodgers, having some more affordable dudes coming up can help offset the extra expenditures due to deferred money, etc, and improve the general ROR for the investment group. Not that they “need” the money, but rich team owners like money.
rockiesmagicnumber: Why only the Dodgers?
Oh for sure all 30 teams want those sweet sweet cost-saving team control years. But the huge money teams don’t *need* the cost savings, per se, as per this discussion. I guess I’m wondering where the ACTUAL ceiling is for NYY or NYM or LAD or whoever else wants to have a gigantic payroll. Like, at what point (if ever!) are they gonna need to be leveraging some league-min talent to offset money owed to fully depreciated assets? in 14 years there won’t be any additional value to squeeze out of Ohtani (like sure, marketing and front office stuff) while they’re paying him 68MM/yr.
I guess more a long-term curiosity than any sort of counterpoint.
Youre staring at a bloated payroll with so much money sunk into bad investments and you dont know why they deal with prospects? FFS they were giving Donaldson 20MM a year to be completely washed.
Doing the opposite of relying on prospects is what landed them a mid team for a top payroll. Youre right that they should supplement what holes they have with free agents as that is their advantage, but wrong to think they should forgo the process all together. Case in point, Aaron Judge.
Roc was the no.10 ranked prospect, I think it’s fine. Probably wasnt worth 2 prospects, but I digress. Optioning him to work on his stuff, which is honestly really good, is fine.
Agreed Sal. I said at the time that it was possible that bird might end up being a bit of a longer term play in need of some coaching to adjust his approach and get out of the mindset and approach of pitching in coors.
If they’re gonna fire anyone it’s Aaron F’in Boone.
Nah, it’s gotta be Cashman.
Fire Boone now and it’s Ausmus.
Fire Boone in November and bring in __.
Do you honestly think anything would change?
That’s why Girardi didn’t get an offer.
Get a new GM. New coaching staff. Have a huge press conference and tell the world enoughs enough and the world needs The Evil Empire back.
The Evil Empire has changed coasts.
Just moved to the other side of NY
How does Boone still have a job?
Thank god, this young man is killing us right now! He definitely needs some seasoning at AAA! Lol.
@ChuckyNJ- Unfortunately, Cashman goes nowhere he’s part of the Steinbrenner Family. 🤦♂️ Aaron Boone’s gotta go IMMEDIATELY!!!
Boone and his new bullpen sure are doing great…
Boone didn’t trade for him though. cashman should be replaced
What’s worse, Cubs fans? Moving your just acquired player to the injured list, or back to the minors?
Not a Cubs fan, but I thought I would chime in anyway. The injured list is obviously worse because you can bring back a guy from the minors whenever you want and you cannot heal elbows or obliques on a whim.
Maybe the Yankees can trade Cashman for Scott Harris from the Tigers? Do you think that would be an upgrade?
OOF!
Wow, pretty stupid/panic move imo. As a Jays fan I approve!
He’s under team control for years. They were just using in majors until Leiter jr gets back. They will be changing his pitch mix
Bird was always going to be a work in progress upon the trade.
Brid did great at Coors Field for the most part. The problem is that the Yankees don’t play at Coors Field, so what does that matter?
There’s going to be an adjustment period of not having to use his pitching approach at Coors and doing something new to him.
Or it could be that relievers are incredibly volatile and Jake Bird will never be as good as he was in the first half of the year again. He didn’t start giving up homers with the Yanks. He gave up homers in 5 of his last 7 games with the Rockies too.
It’s a small sample size but I knew he was going to be a project as soon as they traded for him similar to the Mark Leiter, Jr. acquisition. The Yankees love relievers with one really good pitch but has struggles with its command.
Ybc yeah I remember we both said that at the time. Bird has good stuff and is moving to a far more competent org for player development. I still think there’s good upside here and we have the team control and the flexibility with leiter coming back to help him adjust.
YBC: Or Bird’s glass could be half empty, not half full. He might just suck.
Hiflew, the coors effect for both pitchers and hitters is not just about how that park plays, its also about the challenge of adjusting to playing half one’s games outside that unique environment. Really tough to potentially need two significantly different approaches as a pitcher at home vs on the road and to have to switch back and forth from a home park where your pitches don’t move like they do anywhere else.
That was quick lol
Traded pretty good 2b prospect for bird
That’s a tough development for Bird, but I cannot stop smirking about the Yankees’ trade. Just in case: Could Bednar be optioned as well?
Gruß,
BSHH
So much for a Bird in the hand is better than 2 in the bush leagues.
You give up on a guy you traded prospects for in a week? Are you kidding me?
Wow. If you wonder why the Yankees haven’t won any titles for a while, you have a great example.
I was NOT a fan of acquiring Bird from Colorado. Not even for free.
I casually observed his use there and it much more often was in a trailing situation (I know, aren’t they mostly?!) But he was NOT their closer.
Bird just not a real good selection like Doval, Bednar I am thinking Williams is mentally defenseless, Maybe a 7th inning guy. Sorry, different topic
Yes no way the Airbender should be closing games for us! He’s been lousy!
I was NOT a fan of acquiring Bird from Colorado. Not even for free.
Aw, come on. Rock and roll baby!
Who knew trading for a Rockies reliever at the deadline wouldn’t work out.
(Me.)
Like with any other team, it is hit or miss. Pierce Johnson has been pretty solid for Atlanta. Carlos Estevez wasn’t a trade but has been pretty good since leaving Colorado.
For Bird, his outings with the Yankees have just been a continuation of his awful performance in July with the Rockies. For some reason the fact that he pitched lousy for a whole month before the deadline didn’t scare off the Yankees.
All I’m saying is that the Yankees refuse to give up prospects for a star. They missed out on Cliff Lee, Verlander, Cole with Pittsburgh, and so on and so on. This is why nothing has happened since 2009. The prospects they do keep Dominez, Volpe, Wells, etc has struggled. They desperately need to redo the entire player development team. At least the Knicks gave up a ton for Bridges looking back they should have gotten someone better. However, they took a chance. Prospects are like first round picks. You never know what they will become always trade for a Superstar if he’s available. If I’m Judge, I consider demanding a trade. It’s works in other sports. The Yankees did nothing in the Mattingly ERA and now Judge as well.
Mike Lupica says hi to your talk radio rant.
Can you imagine if Preller was the Yanks GM?
Your doing a great job trolling. All your comments are to infuriate Yankee fan base. The first one trading away all prospects now after the deadline was even better. You are funny.
What non rental superstar did they miss out on? or did you want them to move top prospects for a rental?
Yanks knew Leiter was coming back when they made all of the trades. Bits having options and years of control certainly factored into the decision to snag him.
I will die on this hill: Position Players are awful at bullpen management (excluding catchers). There isn’t a single example of one who played MLB navigating a bullpen well.
Not all pitchers are excellent with bullpen management (John Farrell) but every single position player without fail is terrible at it, and this isn’t discussed enough.
Not to defend, but NYY BP has usually been strong since Boone became manager. La Russa changed the way BPs were used couple decades ago as former position player. There are plenty fine….but one thing for sure…..BP guys not doing its job easiest way to make any manager look bad…especially in today’s game where SP’s don’t consume a ton of innings.
AJ Hinch
“excluding catchers”
@Tracker83: was a catcher
Sparky Anderson, 2nd base, has a rep of good bullpen mgt
Sparky leaned on Roger Craig to handle the pitching. He knew it wasn’t his forte.
that was the later Tigers (1980-1984)- here’s what ai says about the Reds
“During Sparky Anderson’s tenure as manager of the Cincinnati Reds, the pitching coach was Larry Shepard. He served in this role during the 1970s, a period when the Reds won two World Series (1975, 1976). Shepard was highly regarded for his ability to develop pitchers and foster a strong team dynamic within the pitching staff. “
“Who played Major League Baseball” and “excluding catchers” were missed the first time around so I would like to reiterate those two points. Sparky Anderson not playing long enough to even hit a home run means that he doesn’t count.
Terry Francona is usually pretty good, including this year when the Reds haven’t spent much money on their bullpen.
Boone’s BP had ranked #6, #1, and #3 in the past 3 years, out of 30 teams. What makes you think he is a bad BP manager?
Joe Torre did ok
This guy has been one of the worst relief pitchers I’ve ever seen and for whatever reason, people thought he was the move for the deadline
Lol literally nobody thought that. Cmon dude
Some of you don’t seem to understand the difference between “optioned” and “designated for assignment” and it shows.
The Rockies should make a move to get him back.
Not sure if Cashman looked at Bird’s home/road splits before he traded for him but his career ERA is actually a half run lower at Coors Field than it was away lol, that should have been a bad sign.
@craven
Every Rockies player has home road splits that are greater than most, as pitches move differently in the thin air. Bird adjusted to the home parameters. For fun, find a Rockies player that doesn’t have large home road splits.
Stymee
His road ERA is 5 and home ERA is 4.50 lol glad he “adjusted” his spin rate, arm angle, breakfast ect whatever you think made him more elite
Nothing still matches up to the disaster trade giving away JP Sears for damaged goods
That was such an incompetent trade
Captainmike1: I bet the Mets would gladly let the Yankees have Montas back right about now.
If the Mets PAID ME $500,000 I would do my best to make that happen
Does this make him a Minor Bird?
Is a Bird in the hand really
worth 2 in the Bronx Bush?
Should the Yankees bullpen be
Referred to as the Boonedocks?
Or Boone Ducks?
Seems like nobody in the Bullpen
Can Quack the Starting Rotation.
You tried..I guess.
For sure they are flighty.
All their plans went to seed.
Andrew Heaney 2.0, hmm?
Bird was Hunter Goodman away from being a 2025 All-Star. Now he’s demoted.
ESPN may have jumped the gun on Leiter’s return. Judge is supposed to come off the injury list tonight (8/5).
Needs to go to AAA and re-grow his beard. Probably feels naked out there since he shaved
Funny how people are blaming Cashman for giving up too much for Bird, well I don’t hear complaining about the McMahon deal as of yet. But really if you look at the Yankees ML roster you can also blame the lack of good team base running, lack of consistent team fielding who does that belong to Cashman or Boone or is it just a lack of team fundamentals which is a players only issue that you either have that in you or you don’t. You only can blame the GM for the overall build of this team, the manger when he doesn’t attempt to instill the fundamentals, or the players who should know the fundamentals or don’t want to know the fundamentals. Yankees are just a team full of a fundamentally flawed season so far.
Poll
A) deserved demotion?
B) victim of bullpen mismanagement?
C) that was the plan all along with Leiter coming back (if that’s true, why not DW?)
More likely a.
Cashman didn’t just trade for Bird because he was hyped as one of the best pitchers in baseball’s worst pitching staff. I presume one of his scouts saw his production over the last several months that looks like an exponential decay curve and said, “Oh, I see what he’s doing wrong. If he changes it we’ll have the Bird from April who had 26 strikeouts in 19 innings with a 1.16 WHIP.” Haven’t watched him so I can’t say if he made changes but even with such a small sample size, he’s now the face of the blame for 2 losses of games that the yanks should have won.
My guess, the thought is to put him under less pressure, see if he can be fixed. And If not, the RailRiders have a new mainstay in their pen for a few years.
I see your point. In hindsight though that if they felt that way why not just send him down immediately upon arrival..
Twin
Mariano Rivera must to return back !!!
Frankie: Mariano’s nearly 56 years old. He wouldn’t help.
“That’s odd, I thought it would be big news. There seems to be an absence of a certain ornithological piece. A head line regarding the mass awareness of a certain avian variety. Have you not heard? It was my understanding that everyone had heard…”
Who called for the fastball?
Current Yankees are an embarrassment to their history!
A history of embarrassment has preceded the current Yankees.
@whyhayzee
Not like the embarrassment of the Mets and Orioles, though.
I think they were assuming a 5 ERA in Colorado was like a 4.50 ERA in NY. Not 27
“He comes with three years of team control after 2025.”
That’s a positive. Unless, of course, it’s not, as could be the case here.
Papa ooma mow mow. The Trashmen? Coincidence?
Still trying to throw a breaking ball like it’s in Colorado? Has to be so tough on a pitcher. I watched his last appearance as a Rockie and the slider got absolutely hammered. How’s Kinley faring so far in Atlanta?
Does Wells call the pitches or are they called by the bench?
Ryan Stanek for Jake Bird , come on Yanks
Just in time for a Chad Green reunion lol.
Bring back TONK!
I’m just happy that at the moment it appears the Rockies may have won a trade.
