Padres Place Ramón Laureano On Injured List Due To Finger Fracture

By Darragh McDonald | September 28, 2025 at 4:38pm CDT

TODAY: Laureano told reporters (including Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune) that his finger will be in a splint for roughly the next three weeks.  As such, Laureano said he has only “delusional hope” that he’ll be able to play again in 2025.

September 27: The Padres officially placed Laureano on the 10-day injured list today, per a club announcement. The move was retroactive to September 25, and San Diego recalled infielder Will Wagner to take Laureano’s place on the active roster for the final two games of the regular season.

September 24: Padres outfielder Ramón Laureano has a fracture in the index finger of his right hand and will miss at least the first round of the playoffs. Manager Mike Shildt informed reporters, including Julian Del Gaudio of Fox 5 San Diego, after today’s game.

Laureano appeared to injure his hand when fouling off a ball in today’s game. As seen in this video from MLB.com, he was shaking his hand in discomfort after the pitch. He was removed from the game in the second inning.

Shildt sounded fairly pessimistic when asked if Laureano would be able to return after the first playoff round, as heard in this audio clip from 97.3 The Fan. “Sometimes, we come in and talk about, you know, slight fracture, hairline fracture,” Shildt said. “It’s a fracture. So I want to temper expectations but I also want to keep everything on the table. But I wouldn’t expect to see him early in the playoffs but I would hold out hope for later.”

Laureano and Ryan O’Hearn were acquired from the Orioles at the trade deadline. The Friars sent six prospects to Baltimore in one of several aggressive moves they made to bolster the club for the stretch run.

Since then, Laureano has become an everyday part of the club’s outfield and performed quite well. He has nine home runs in 49 games, helping him produce a .271/.325/.492 line and 128 wRC+. He has also stolen three bases and bounced around between all three outfield spots.

Losing that kind of player with just a few games left in the season is obviously less than ideal timing. Based on Shildt’s comments, the club will probably have to operate under the assumption that Laureano is done for the year. If they can engineer a deep postseason run and get him back in the second half of October, they can cross that bridge when they come to it.

That will leave the Padres with an outfield mix consisting of Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill and Gavin Sheets. Tatis has been ill this week but Shildt said in the comments linked above that he has been feeling better. O’Hearn has mostly been playing first base but can play a bit of outfield as well. Bryce Johnson is on hand as a bench guy. Tirso Ornelas is on the 40-man roster and could perhaps be recalled. Tyler Wade is in the system in a non-roster capacity and could be selected to the 40-man.

The Padres hold a $6.5MM option to bring back Laureano for 2026, with no buyout. This injury is minor enough that it shouldn’t impact that decision, so that option is likely to be picked up. The Friars have been working around notable financial constraints in recent years but could likely find a trade partner if they don’t have the budget space to cover that amount of money themselves.

Sure is. But re-signing a player involves negotiating a new contract. The Padres can just unilaterally exercise Laureano’s option for 2026. No need to negotiate anything unless they want to keep him for 2027 and beyond.

If Tatis and Manny can’t overcome their strike outs and overall offensive slumps it won’t really matter.

Brew – that is 3.5 straight playoff games with little / no offense. If that great BP can’t get a lead today, it will all be for naught.

I don’t get it. The players can produce. These aren’t poor offense guys in this lineup (and 2024 meltdown) like in previous years with 3/4 .200 hitters. How do they all go down at the same time (except Bog yesterday) at the most important time of the year?

Good thoughts for a rebound today! Cheers to you.

“Overall offensive slump” – 2nd lowest ops and ops+ and also and most importantly, when the statement was made, Ratis was in a very big slump – SO were high in the slump. There is a big difference between a slump and the season.

Thankfully, Tatis had a good final few games.

You know I’m one of the biggest most active SD fans on this site, right?

Aloha Bradduh! I hope for a good series with your Padres! You folks have quite a pitching staff! I’m so glad Seiya-san got hot at the end, Tucker is cold and looks lost at the plate but Suzuki is seeing the ball well along with Nico. On your team, Tatis is always the threat! Again, hope for a great series. You take care now! Mahalo!

Aloha Gwynning, question: not sure how much of a budget SD will have for 2026 with the 2027 CBA in the background, do you think Preller brings back Cease and King? I like them both and feel SD needs to sign them even if shorter deals, to solidify the staff and help them win their division. Take care now bradduh! Mahalo

Aloha Gwynning, that makes sense. I just looked up on Fangraphs, looks like your Padres have about $167mil in commitments, so they could definitely sign Cease or King. My Cubs have a little more room going into 2026 but again with that looming CBA situation, who knows. Mahalo!

Devil’s advocate: Preller reportedly got all the sellers to pay most, if not all, of the remaining 2025 salaries for the players the Pads acquired.

That said, I highly doubt a $6.5 million option that counts as a huge bargain for a starting left fielder with Laureano’s numbers will be any financial obstacle.

Yeah there is a zero % chance they don’t pick up laureano’s option.

Padres have a lot of money coming off the books. Also have some salary increase.

Hosmer, Arraez, king, cease, ohearn, Suarez (likely), Diaz, Iglesias…few other 1m guys like Heyward. Darvish salary drops as well.

Increase via arb, tatis, manny, Pivetta go up. Though only the arb guys will count anymore towards the tax line.

Padres will start the offseason below the tax line. My guess is they may try and reset it again next year.

They have 1.5 (back up catcher .5, DH/1b) position holes and a 1-2 starting pitching holes.

Pivetta, Musgrove, Darvish, Vasquez will all likely be in the rotation with Sears prob getting first chance as of now. Gonna need to add here imo.

They paid Pivetta almost nothing this year. Moved King’s salary to a buyout next year on a mutual option, and got deadline trade partners to cover cash on trades.

The story has been beaten to death but Preller has certainly been operating with a financial constraint.

Yes but that’s because they have such a high payroll. These articles read like the padres don’t spend money when they do. They just have spent up to their limit.

Good summary above Simm. And I think the point to be made is while the Padres spent up to their limit this year (a limit higher than 75% of teams) next year they will have money coming off the books and thus more to spend. Laureano is a complete no brainer, Darragh should know.

Yeah Sheets in LF with Johnson in relief. Assuming they go with 13 pitchers in playoffs 26 man roster, I’m wondering who gets the final position slot. I would think they will need a RH bat to counter the LH pitchers of Chicago so does McCoy get the nod over Wagner, or would they consider Campy, the greatest AAA player in AAA history?

Very lame and even lamer timing. Prior to being traded, him and O’Hearn were 2 of the biggest bright spots in a pretty miserable year for us Orioles fans so I was hoping they could help SD make some noise in the playoffs. Maybe he still can if they can make a deep run, fingers crossed.

I love seeing teams in the bottom have of payroll making the playoffs. my team has been top 10 for over a decade and can’t even finish above .500 with 5 MVP seasons wasted. Albert, Rendon, Hamilton, Upton. If Trout figures out his swing, he could earn the rest of his contract as a DH
