The Rays officially have a new owner. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the sale from Stuart Sternberg to a group led by Patrick Zalupski is now rubber stamped with the sale officially closing today.
“It’s an incredible honor to become the stewards of the Tampa Bay Rays, a franchise with a proud history and a bright future,” Zalupski said in a news release. “We are especially privileged to have been chosen by Stu Sternberg as his successors, and we’re all energized by the responsibility to serve Rays fans everywhere and this great game.”
This development was largely a formality. The reported $1.7 billion sale price was agreed to back in July and it was approved by Major League Baseball owners last week. It was noted that the time of that approval last week that the sale still needed to formally close, though that box is now ticked and the keys have changed hands.
Now that the new ownership group is in place, the attention will turn to the unanswered questions surrounding the franchise. The Rays had to play in a minor league park this year due to the extensive hurricane damage done to Tropicana Field. It is hoped that The Trop can be repaired and playable in time for the start of the 2026 season. The club’s lease originally ran through 2027 but the lost year in 2025 has extended that through 2028.
There isn’t a formal plan in place for 2029 and beyond. Zalupski is expected to explore building a new stadium in Tampa itself, as opposed to St. Petersburg, where The Trop is located. That process will take time, as the Rays will have to work out all the particulars with government officials to get the new venue designed, approved, funded, etc.
As Zalupski works on that, president of baseball operations Erik Neander will work on making the club as competitive as possible. Topkin reports that Neander will stay in his job. That’s not especially surprising, as the Rays have generally performed well on tight budgets throughout his tenure. In early 2024, he and manager Kevin Cash were extended through at least 2028.
However, the Rays are currently in a bit of a downswing. They just finished 77-85 after posting an 80-82 record last year. The last time they had losing records in consecutive seasons was back in 2016 and ’17. Amid the uncertainty away from the roster, it’s unclear what kind of resources Neander will have to work with this winter. Topkin notes that there is an introductory press conference scheduled for October 7th, at which point the new owners might shed more light on the next steps for the franchise.

Sp does this mean they’ll actually spend $ now?
Rays get scared every time they see a comment like this
Hopefully they start by extending Caminero.
Stu let his baseball people do baseball. Zalupski doesn’t have deep pockets. This could be Bruce Sherman 2.0 except Sternberg didn’t meddle like Loria.
Hahaha from an Orioles fan. We were duped into that notion, too.
O’s owner might go through a Peter siedler transformation but he’s probably just going to complain about the big market teams every off-season
You sure were. It turns out that billionaire owners still operate payroll based on revenue. That’s how they got to be billionaires
Surprise surprise like Gomer used to say maybe, there is a problem with player salaries.?.
No worries. I believe that the Orioles will come through next year; based on SP ( Braddish, Rogers,Wells, GRod, Kremer) not on their overrated hitting prospects.
Get a stadium deal done and go back to being the Devil Rays. And bring back the original uniforms as their regular home/road uniforms
Hear hear! They might’ve played poorly when they were named the Devil Rays, but that name and their old uniforms are just so much cooler. They could win more fans by going back to that name and uniforms.
Now sign Pete Alonso!
The stadium situation is a mess. The plan that Sternberg torpedoed was going to taken about 2.5 years from ground breaking to ready to play. There are three more years remaining on the lease for Tropicana Field. It took years of negotiating and government financing to get that deal. That implies an extension is necessary as the lease will run out before there is any stadium deal.
The question is whether St. Pete will approve an extension past 2028 without a commitment for a new stadium in St. Pete.
They may not want to extend the lease. The new owners have been pretty open about wanting to relocate to Hillsborough. Look at what happened in Oakland. I have a feeling they will have to return to Steinbrenner at some point.
The Yankees have been adamant that using GMS was a one-time deal. The Yankee organization in Tampa had a really tough year.
The only stadium available for the Rays in the Tampa-St. Pete metro area in 2029 will be Tropicana Field.
Yikes. Well, St. Pete will pretty much be able to name their price for 2029.
Considering the money the county has had to put into repairing the stadium I don’t think they’d be upset if the Rays stayed for another year or two.
Well you would think, but many of the commissioners are pretty bitter about what went down and probably wouldn’t mind sticking it to the Rays either (especially since Stu still has a minority stake in the team). Of course, that’ll depend on future elections and if the new ownership group can repair the damage Stu has done.
Certainly can’t count on a politician to make a rational decision but with Stu only a minority owner I’d imagine that’ll help the cause. But yep—-will have some new faces in the commissioners office by then.
The current commissioners took office after the November general elections. The current makeup of the Pinellas County commission is not enthused about using county funds and/or bonds to build a stadium in Pinellas County.
Tampa is not much better. There is little political appetite to spend public funds to provide a new stadium. The Rays may find it very difficult to get substantial public funding in Hillsborough or Pinellas. I would expect more than four years of work before any stadium agreement is ready with another two to three years of actual construction work.
Not to worry. Now that the Desantis backed St Pete city council is in place they’ll make a deal with the Desantis backed new owners. Poor Stu never stood a chance with these fascists. He was ambushed after election day.
If they are willing to put money into the franchise and become even middle of the pack watch out for the Rays!
I could care less about where they play. Let’s find out if the new owners will actually put money into the team.
My dream scenario for this new group would be for them to extend Caminero, McClanahan, and Aranda, give Carson Williams a good shot at the starting SS position in 2026, start Josh Lowe and make a decision on whether to keep Yandy, Brandon Lowe, and DeLuca, and then extend them if they are kept. Have McClanahan, Rasmussen, and Pepiot as the front line starters, and sign a grade A free agent or two to fill out the roster. If they get rid of Yandy, maybe sign Alonso. Get rid of Cash, Snyder, and Mottola, and sign a manager, hitting coach, and pitching coach who aren’t 100% analytics driven. As far as the stadium, it is basically solved. They will play 2026 at the Trop, 2027 is going to be a lost year with a strike, and that will give them an extra year to build the new park in the Tampa area. They will switch to the new park when the Trop lease runs out, which could now be 2029 with a strike in 2027. Lastly, if they would just promote the team some. $ternberg doesn’t have any billboards or signs with Rays logos within 500 feet of the ballpark. The new park will be in a perfect location if in Tampa, and promoting the team some will guarantee sellouts in a park that is now more central. Looking forward to a new ownership group and hopefully a Rays title by 2035. Rays up!
It’ll likely never happen but I wish they would stay in Tampa.
Crazy the Dodgers cost 2B in 2012 and in 2025 the Rays go for 1.7B.
My mind struggles grasping that.
Cool extend Caminero right away
Move them to New England as NL team. 162 games a year for really solid “take my money even if youre chaim bloom” New England fans. They could build a 40,000 fan stadium anywhere between Salem MA and Bridgeport CT and fill it all Summer.
New England already has the Ref Sox, idiot.
*Red Sox
I don’t understand why the Rays just don’t build a new stadium on the site of the Old sombrero.
They’re going to Orlando like it or not.
