The Opener: Kershaw, AL West, Alonso

By Steve Adams | September 19, 2025 at 9:06am CDT

Here are three things to keep an eye on around baseball this weekend…

1. Kershaw’s Dodger Stadium farewell:

Future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw is officially calling it a career after the 2025 season, and Friday evening marks what will be the final home start of his storied career. In somewhat fitting fashion, it’ll come against the Dodgers’ archrivals from San Francisco — and not only that, but against another former Cy Young winner. The Giants will send left-hander Robbie Ray to the mound opposite Kershaw as the two teams clash in a series that carries major playoff implications. Kershaw and the Dodgers hold a three-game lead on the Padres for the NL West lead, while Ray and the Giants are clinging to the faint hope of closing a three-game deficit (and leapfrogging two other teams)  in the NL Wild Card chase with nine games left to play.

Of course, Kershaw could and very likely will take the ball at home for the Dodgers at some point during the postseason, but tonight’s game currently stands as the final scheduled appearance for the three-time Cy Young winner, five-time NL ERA leader, 11-time All-Star and 2014 NL MVP. Fans will surely greet him with a hero’s welcome and send him off with overwhelming adulation befitting of a genuine franchise icon.

2. Aces clash in a battle for the AL West:

The American League West is the most tightly contested division in baseball. Yesterday’s Mariners win bumped them to 84-69 on the season — the same mark held by the Astros. The M’s now travel to Houston for a three-game series that could very well determine the winner of the division, and it kicks off with a must-see matchup between each club’s best starter of the 2025 season. Seattle sends righty Bryan Woo (3.02 ERA, 26.8 K%, 4.9 BB%, 181 2/3 innings pitched) to the mound against Houston righty Hunter Brown (2.27 ERA, 28.2 K%, 7.8 BB%, 174 1/3 innings pitched). Brown was practically invincible at home in the season’s first three months, but he’s yielded four or more runs in three of his past seven starts at Daikin Park. Woo has been much better at home (2.44 ERA) than on the road (3.58 ERA) — but he also hasn’t surrendered more than three runs in a start since before the trade deadline.

The series will continue with another pair of high-profile starters Saturday, when Mariners righty George Kirby tangles with Astros lefty Framber Valdez. Sunday’s finale will pit Mariners righty Logan Gilbert against journeyman right-hander Jason Alexander, whose stunning 2.76 ERA in 11 starts for the Astros has been a season-saving godsend in the wake of injuries to Ronel Blanco, Spencer Arrighetti and Hayden Wesneski.

3. A red-hot … Polar Bear?

There’s something mildly amusing about one of the hottest hitters in baseball being nicknamed after an arctic animal, but the Mets’ recent opponents probably haven’t been laughing much. Pete Alonso is doing his best to singlehandedly stave off the Mets’ late-season collapse, homering in four consecutive games — three of which were Mets victories. It’s not just the past four games where the Polar Bear has been on a tear, however. Over his past 98 trips to the plate, Alonso is slashing a ridiculous .333/.367/.656 with eight home runs and five doubles. It’s a Herculean finish to a resurgent season for a player who’s been the National League’s most prodigious slugger dating back to his 2019 debut.

Alonso’s mammoth finish only further ensures that he’ll opt out of his two-year contract at season’s end. He’ll return to the open market on the heels of a much better season than his 2024 campaign — and do so without the encumbrance of a qualifying offer, as players can only receive one QO in their career. Alonso and the Mets currently hold a two-game lead over the Reds and D-backs (three games over the Giants) in the NL Wild Card race. They’ll host a home series against the last-place Nationals before heading to Chicago and Miami to close out the year with three game sets versus the Cubs and Marlins.

“…the final home start of his storied career..” — ON APPLE TV. I guess me paying a couple hundred bucks every year for the MLB app doesn’t get you the important games

Tonight’s Dodger and Blue Jay games were pre-selected by Apple TV+. You may be able to watch them with a free trial.
For our MLBTR readers in Canada, the Blue Jays can be seen on their Sportsnet tonight by special arrangement with Apple TV+.

People signing up for free trials to watch the games is exactly why Apple keeps paying to get more games

This kind of stuff isn’t going anywhere, it is too profitable for everyone involved. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are games spread across 5+ different streamers at some point.

Abuse free trials or go the pirate route

Stopped regular cable a few years ago and purchased some streaming apps , several in fact. Apple being one of them along with prime , paramount, peacock and Gotham sports. No mlb tv tho and Still I miss games I’d like to watch. So unless I’m willing to purchase everything out there I’m regulated to At Bat mlb app for free. I’m fine with it. I find my anxiety level drops when I’m just following online.

So it’s part of what they call t-life or something and you have to claim it during a given week leading up to the season. But it’s totally free and gives you any game that you’d get through a regular subscription

Reminder to everyone saying that “Kershaw can’t pitch in the playoffs he never showed up in October” that his game log (available on this website) is a long list of Dumb Roberts sending him out for the 7th or 8th inning when he should have been pulled

Was looking at that last night. Comparing to some others who made as many playoff appearances. After all his accomplishments in his career (very impressive) his Post Season is quite dismal.

“He’s at 91 pitches coming off a 25 pitch 6th inning? Let me send him out for the 7th.” -Managerial Genius Dave Roberts

And then his final line is 6.1 IP, 4 ER, 2 BB, 11K 104 pitches thrown and an L

104 isn’t high, especially for a win or go home situation where there is extra rest likely involved.

He has 25 complete games in his career. Guys used to do that in one season. Sigh. Get off my lawn. All the best to Clayton Kershaw. I hope he throws a few gems in the postseason so people stop crying.

The 1980 A’s featured Rick Langford with his 28 complete games, Mike Norris with 24, and Matt Keough with 20. Billy Martin didn’t care. He knew he wouldn’t be there long anyway. All of those guys had their careers cut short by all those innings. This was the beginning of the end of the complete-game era.

Mets should approach Alonso’s camp about a new deal, as there aren’t many internal options to rely on a full season. Should it be unreasonable, pivot to Bellinger as soon as the offseason starts.

I have no skin in the game, but I don’t see they have much of a choice if they want to maintain their success of this season.

I don’t know that it’s very likely that Kershaw has a home appearance in the playoffs. He’s clearly the #6 starter, not a needed role in a 3 game series, and there are already 5 LH relievers. Decent chance he’s not on the roster. If they make it past the WC round, they may roster a 6th starter but half the games are on the road. Celebrate tonight.

If you are not trolling, you sure don’t follow the Dodgers. The Dodgers bullpen has been a weak point and so while Yamamoto, Snell, Ohtani and Glasnow are the top four starters, I am confident that Kershaw will be used and has actual value. Vesia, Dreyer and Kershaw are more reliable than Scott, Treinan and Yates. By the way, who is the 5th starter you put ahead of Kershaw, surely not Sasaki.

At this point I’d put Sheehan over Kershaw but not by much. Sheehan will be more valuable in the postseason bullpen. #4 starter not really needed until NLCS but with the Dodgers on a six man rotation perhaps the #4 will be used in the NLDS. Will Ohtani (likely the #4 starter) slide into the pen and play some outfield, and Kershaw becomes the #4 starter? Lots of questions and not a lot of definitive answers. At least not yet.

Kershaw will likely have a spot but I’d still trust Treinen and Scott. They obviously have the talent and stuff still. It’s just a matter of better execution and command.

I really hope Kopech, Scott, Yates and Treinen miraculously find their command when the calendar flips to October. Otherwise, the Dodgers will not last long in the playoffs….

Kersh is still one of the 13 best pitchers on the staff, so of course he’ll be on the Wild Card roster filling whatever role is needed….

It’s frustrating when they have blackouts on a service you are paying a significant amount of money to subscribe to. I get the local blackouts as we probably all subscribe to see our teams that play out of market but the Apple Tv+ and ESPN blackouts are annoying. Every Red Sox/Yankees series this season was played on a weekend and ESPN had 3 of the 4 games on Sunday Night Baseball

MLB.tv sent me a survey, and it had a couple of questions regarding the blackouts, and I went all Karen on the responses, even rated the service poorly, just for having the stupid blackouts. This is just absolutely unacceptable from MLB.

Pete isn’t staving off the Mets’ late-season collapse singlehandedly, mind you. Those three young pitching prospects that were called up have certainly done their part. Despite all the usual comments on here about them not being ready or “proven.” Lol
