Albert Pujols To Interview For Angels’ Managerial Vacancy, May Be “Leading Choice”

By Mark Polishuk | October 1, 2025 at 11:48pm CDT

Albert Pujols could be returning to Anaheim, as Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Angels are planning to interview the future Hall-of-Famer for their managerial opening.  Beyond just being a candidate for the job, Pujols already looks like a favorite, as The Athletic’s Sam Blum, Katie Woo, and Ken Rosenthal write that “Pujols is believed to be the leading choice” for Angels owner Arte Moreno.  A source close to Pujols says “the decision may be Pujols’ to make” in regards to whether or not he’ll take the job.

Reports emerged yesterday that the Halos were making a change in the dugout, as neither Ron Washington nor Ray Montgomery would be managing the team in 2026.  Washington took a leave of absence in June after undergoing a quadruple bypass, and Montgomery (previously the team’s bench coach) took over as interim manager for the remainder of the 2025 campaign.

Montgomery told Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register that he is deciding whether or not to accept an offer to remain in the Angels organization in another role.  As for Washington, the Angels held a club option on his services for next season, but chose to decline that option in favor of a new face as skipper.

Or, perhaps not an entirely new face if Pujols ends up as the hire.  Pujols spent parts of 10 seasons playing with Los Angeles, hitting .256/.311/.447 with 222 home runs after signing a 10-year, $240MM free agent contract in the 2011-12 offseason.  Much more was expected from Pujols given the size of the deal and his past superstar-level production with the Cardinals, but between injuries and age (Pujols was entering his age-32 season at the time of the signing), the slugger hit the decline phase that most players experience during their 30s.

In theory, the tandem of Pujols and the emerging Mike Trout (and by 2018, Shohei Ohtani) would’ve promised a glorious era of Angels baseball.  Los Angeles did post winning records in four of Pujols’ first five years with the team, though only the 98-win 2014 squad made the playoffs, and the Angels were swept out of the ALDS by the Royals.  That remains the Halos’ last postseason appearance, and the team hasn’t had a winning season since 2015.

With Pujols’ numbers falling off and Ohtani’s presence covering the DH position, the Angels decided to designate Pujols for assignment in May 2021 and then released him soon after.  Pujols moved across town to sign with the Dodgers for the rest of the 2021 campaign, and then played one final season in St. Louis, turning back to the clock to hit .270/345/.550 with 24 homers in 351 plate appearances during his farewell.

Since retiring, Pujols has still been an Angels employee, due to the 10-year personal services contract that was attached to his free agent deal for his post-playing days.  He been open about eventually wanting to return to baseball as a coach or manager, and he has been a special instructor during the Halos’ spring camps, and a skipper in the Dominican Winter League.  Pujols’ most high-profile managerial gig is slated for this coming spring at the World Baseball Classic when he is slated to helm the Dominican Republic’s team, though those plans will naturally change if he is hired to manage the Angels.

Pujols’ lack of direct MLB managing or coaching experience doesn’t make him all that different from some other recent managers who were hired to run teams shortly after their careers were over.  It is increasingly rare to see a true superstar-level talent move into a managerial role, though naturally plenty of Hall-of-Famers have also become skippers (or, back in the day, even served as player-managers).

The idea of Pujols returning as manager to try and restore the Halos to prominence carries some natural intrigue.  If the ball is truly in Pujols’ court about whether he wants the job or not, he may view his past history in Anaheim as part of the challenge, and beginning his managerial career in a familiar environment undoubtedly holds some appeal.  In a sense, there is nowhere to go but up, given how the Angels are on a decade-long run of losing seasons.  Since seven other teams besides the Angels are also looking for managers this offseason, it is possible Pujols could emerge as a candidate for one of those positions as well.

Highest winning percentage in the history of MLB, the best team year after year for a decade, and only one full season championship to show for it.

Sounds about the right intelligence for the
      “St. Louis Cardinals Owners”!!!

They turned their back on Albert Pujols and kept the Manager (Oli Marmol) who has directly lead the Cardinals team to 3 straight seasons of bottom dwellers in the NL Central and sent the Cardinals Franchise into a total rebuild!!!!!

      I don’t get it!!!!!
A Class Act like Albert Pujols is interested helping rebuild the Cardinals as their manager and the new President of Baseball Operations (Chaim Bloom) first move is to turn his back on Pujols and keep a Classless Act loser like Oli Marmol.

@17Dizzy You betcha it’s a highly peculiar move, Bloom retaining Marmol. People around St Louis must be tearing their hair out while pleading with God “Why? Why? Why?” It makes no freaking sense on the surface of things. But it just occurred to me to ask the question, “well why did Mozeliak decide to retain and endure the Marmol plague upon that clubhouse for so long??” The answer must be the same for Bloom then. This is very cynical but Bloom must also think Marmol is very useful to keep kicking around because it gives the fans someone to focus on in their wrath when things go asunder. Marmol can continue his role as Bad Cop in calling out players/throwing players under bus while front office/Bloom can keep their hands clean and exude the Good Cop image to all. Bottom line: this is likely to be a dysfunctional/incompetent absurd way to run an organization.

Obviously Pujols would fit right in as a manager (with no experience) in St. Louis!!!
After Tony LaRussa left in 2011 —- John Mozeliak made the first move of many to begin knocking down the Historic Cardinals Franchise—- from top to bottom!!!

After LaRussa —- John Mozeliak NEVER hired a single manager after him who ever had one day of managing a baseball team —- other than their sons or daughter’s Little League team!!! (Mike Mathaney — Mike Schildt — Oli Marmol) ——

(Mike Schildt did win Manager of the year when he managed the Cardinals but was immediately Fired by John Mozeliak because of —— as Mozeliak said!!!
Philosophical Differences!!! I guess Mozeliak just didn’t want to win and Schildt did!!!)

I grew up a lifelong Cardinals fan. Almost 40 years of obsessive support year after year.

I haven’t watched a single game since Schildt was fired. To hell with the whole DeWitt family and Mozeliak. Once they discovered Cards fans would still pump money into the machine for losing teams, they stopped acting like they were worth supporting.

I wish Bloom the best, but we haven’t had a GM worth a damn since Walt Jocketty. Mozeliak single-handedly decimated the farm system, so Bloom is inheriting at least several years of ending contracts and fair-to-middlin’ minor leaguers.

We could have Connie Mack and Sparky Anderson’s DNA put into a centrifuge to create the greatest manager in baseball history and it won’t make this team a winner.

When are the Angels going to interview for a new team president and fire the other executives?

        Agreed.

The owner hired his college and billboard buddies to be executives.

The owner and those unqualified buddies have hired a string of ineffective GMs and managers and hamstrung them by cutting staff at every level.

The owner and his buddies gutted funding for scouting and development for years, including ignoring the DR.

That same owner and his buddies will now lead the search for a new manager. Expecting them to suddenly start making good decisions now is foolish.

Think Jurrah cares? Yearly the cowboys are rated the most valuable NFL franchise by Forbes. The cowboys are exactly where Jurrah wants them, constantly in the spot light and a cash cow. If he wanted to win he never would have ran Jimmie Johnson out of town. 30 years since they sniffed a Super Bowl Jurrah is the only constant over those 30 years.

Theres a reason most all time greats aren’t managers…. They dont understand how others just can’t do what they did… For those Angels fans complaining of the potential hire, I’m sure most Cards fans would trade ya Oli Marmol for Pujols. Also the no experience shtick is lame. How does anyone gain any experience if no one will hire based on none? Bet yall started with no experience in your fields. At least Albert has four+ decades of living the game.

The best course of action is Pujols looking for a year or two as a bench coach for an MLB team.

Cut it any way you want, just like Marmol when he first started, Pujols has no managing/coaching experience yet especially this being the Angels.

Most Cardinals fans would trade Marmol for a slightly worn out Bob Tewksbury baseball card. As for the no experience thing, you used to gain experience as a manager/coach the same way you did as a player: in the minor leagues and working your way up. Today’s analytics driven front offices don’t necessarily require the experience as long as you are able to follow whatever instructions they give you in an email…

3 of those 4 weren’t very good managers though. Pete the only one with a winning record but never won a playoff game. Robinson is the best player/manager combo, most likely. Although, Torre who didnt make HOF as player but was borderline and of course one of the best managers ever so he might have the edge.

I’d argue all time greats aren’t good managers bc they dont know how to make players without their talent better or motivate them to put in the work they did. The reason Ted Williams wasnt the greatest hitting coach ever.

Looks like an odd move. More for show etc. But Pujols takes things seriously and he’s not about a circus. I feel he’ll voice up what he wants and respect for Trout to put a winning team together. I feel Wash was promised something like that based on his comments when hired, and I think it’ll come out the that they didnt add enough as promised. With Pujols hes high profile so he could make demands, not get jersey around and hold more accountability which is desperately needed in Anaheim. We’ll see

Lou Piniella was a good player, and won a title as a manager. Frank Robinson? Didn’t have much success in the dugout, but still did it for a long time.

Of the last 50 or so years, I’d argue Frank Robinson was the best player to also be a good manager. Really the only Hall of Famer to be a decent manager at all in that time.

Frank Robinson played the race card everywhere he went. People throw around the words clubhouse cancer far too often, but Robinson was the biggest clubhouse cancer in Angel history.

He wanted to be manager. Players took side based mostly on race, Winkles, the Angel manager was unprepared to handle it, so Autry fired Winkles and brought in Dick Williams.

Robinson also played the race card against umpires..and it worked.

Yeah, a black guy sticking up for himself is threatening to a lot of people. Not sure what any of that has to do with being a great player and a good manager, though. More so, just a way for you to bring race into it something that didnt involve it.

He played the race card in both the Angel Clubhouse and against umpires.

And in the Baltimore clubhouse, he wasn’t trying to form a coup so he could be named manager.

Why was the best hitter on the Angels traded for Ken Suarez? Why was one of the best players on the Orioles Traded for Doyle Alexander when they already had a staff of four 20 game winners?

And obviously you don’t know a thing about Angel history. This stuff is very well documented in Ross Newhan’s book.

Blue sky ,without getting into how good a player Gil Hodges was, I don’t think being a good player is relevant.

Ted Williams was a great manager. But he resigned.

Great players of today don’t need the money. Players of 40 years ago did, but great players today are set for life.

I think it’s safe to say that there has been no managers with Pujols’ playing credentials that can that can lay claim to being successful managers. They need at least 3 starters and 4 relievers before you even touch the offense which obviously needs multiple slots. This team is no good.

Hire Scioscia as the GM and pujols as the manager. Troy P as pitching coach. Call it a day

In the case of Scioscia, here’s a guy whose been out of the game for 7 years, with a successful resume. Reasoning? He’s not considered to be an analytics guy….which appears to be precisely what every front office looks for in a resume.

Mike Scioscia was considered one of the best managers in the game for a while. It is kinda bizarre that he never had another opportunity after he left the Angels.

He was in MLB for almost 40 years, had a successful career as both a player and a manager, won a ring on both sides of the game, made at least $60 million throughout his career, and was able to step down when he wanted to instead of getting canned like the vast majority of managers.

He’s still managed Team USA in the Olympics and Premier12 tournaments, as recently as 2024.

You can have all the money in the world and have zero clue on how to operate a baseball team. Arte proves that. You worship his net worth. We’ll pay attention to the important stuff.

I get the cynicism, but I dunno, I think I like it. The Angels badly need some sizzle, even at the possible expense of some steak. A good bench coach will help Pujols learn some of the strategic aspects on the job, and in the meantime, the Angels will be FUN for a change. And Pujols, who always seemed to be a smart guy, could develop into a good manager.

The angels need to do something to keep them in the headlines

You flip on baseball tonight or MLB network all they talk about are the Yankees, the Red Sox, the Mets, the Phillies and the Dodgers if the Cubs are good, you can throw them in too

East Coast bias is real and the second worst sport there is is major league baseball hockey by far is the worst

Relevance is important. The angels consistently are in the top 10 in payroll and we finished 11th and attendance.

So they draw fans for bad baseball and they spend money

Problem is you can spend all the money you want, but you have to spend it smart and that’s where the angels fail miserably

Took a Sporcle quiz today. Most recent playoff lineup for each team (not including games this year already). Had to scratch my brain for the Angels. All I got was Trout and Pujols. I also got CJ Cron (thanks to typing out Cronenworth), and Howie Kendrick (since I typed him out for Washington). Can anybody else get the others? A few I was ashamed of missing, but then again, this was over a decade ago.

Angels seemed to have never had much in the way in pitching in the last decade. Trying to get a bunch of HR hitters to win championships, let alone a winning record. Brewers 2025 average ops is 750, one or two names, but they have starters.
Just hope Pujols doesnt get plantar fasciitis walking to the mound.

    Honestly, why not?

It literally could not get any worse for the Angels and no manager in the world can make a contender out of that current roster.

Might as well hire a shiny distracting fugazi of a manager.

Pujols as Manager of the Angels = Jeter as CEO of the Marlins, as far as I am concerned.

only way Albert agrees is if Arte convinces him he will go way over the Cap for Pitching and more pitching. 3rd base is a hole also.

Love Pujols, however the Angels need a proven manager not a guy who has no experience. He’s a big name sure but come on Moreno. It stinks what happened to Washington but they also don’t need a guys whose on the way out managerial wise. Look into Girardi or bring back a fan favorite in Benji ,someone who will be there for awhile

Meanwhile in STL…let’s walk it back with Ollie Marmol and continue to lose attendance of 10,000 per game.

Oli is not the problem in STL. If anything them over performing their expected win total the last two years shows he was a plus to the team. People just like to blame him for the team having bad players.

His bullpen management is his best in-game asset. The Cardinals bullpen has constantly been one of the best in baseball even with large turnovers included after the trade deadline this year. Dont let your narrative to get in the way of facts.

Arte cuts a future hof on his last year of a 10 year contract. Then 3 years later wants to hire him as manager. If I were pujlos I would rather manage the dodgers aaa team for a year and work for someone else. I know there are only so many teams, but come on man, Have some pride for yourself and tell Arte to go f himself. He won’t be building a winning team for you. Just a publicity tool

A first year manager is just what Moreno wants. Pujols has no experience as an MLB manager so he won’t push back and he will get all the blame when we suck once again in 2026.

My vote is for Snitker. He and Minasian already have a relationship and we’ve traded a lot with the Braves. His win/loss as a manager is 811/668 with a World Series win.
