After an epic 15-inning win over the Tigers in Game Five of the ALDS, the Mariners are advancing to their first AL Championship Series since 2001. The club’s hard-worked pitching staff will likely be getting some major reinforcements, as M’s president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto told reporters (including the Seattle Times’ Adam Jude) that right-hander Bryan Woo is expected to added to the Mariners’ roster for the next round.
Woo probably won’t pitch until closer to the midpoint of the series, Dipoto said. This means Woo is being lined up for a start when the ALCS shifts to Seattle for Games 3-4 and (if necessary) 5. It also leaves open the question of who exactly will be starting for the Mariners in the first two games in Toronto, as the M’s used starters Logan Gilbert and Luis Castillo out of the bullpen during last night’s 15-inning marathon. Gilbert threw 34 pitches over two innings of relief, and Castillo threw 15 pitches over 1 1/3 frames.
Dipoto told Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 radio last night that “probably Bryce [Miller] and friends” would be the plan for Game 1, “but for a couple of days we may have to be creative…simply because so many guys had to pitch in today.” Miller would be working on three days’ rest if he started Game 1, so as Dipoto implied, the bullpen may be leaned on again in what would probably be a limited start for the righty. Castillo is probably the favorite to go in Game 2 with Gilbert’s availability also a question, and in theory, this could line up Gilbert for Game 3, George Kirby in Game 4, and Woo in Game if the M’s chose to deploy their full rotation. This assumes that Woo will be used in a normal starting capacity, and holding him off until the middle of the series would give the right-hander more time to fully ramp up.
Woo posted a 2.94 ERA over 186 2/3 innings during the regular season, but he developed pectoral tightness in a start on September 19 that forced him out of the game after five shutout innings. Woo hasn’t pitched since, though he wasn’t placed on the 15-day injured list, and he was able to throw a bullpen session and a simulated inning prior to the start of the ALDS. Jude wrote prior to Game 5 that Woo threw close to 30 pitches during a bullpen session on Friday, and “appeared to be throwing at roughly 75 percent effort” before kicking things up “closer to 100 percent” for the final few pitches of the session.
Seattle and Toronto don’t have to reveal their ALCS rosters until tomorrow, so we’ll get the final word then on Woo’s involvement and whose spot he’ll be taking on the 26-man. The move to a seven-game series likely means the Mariners will carry an extra pitcher after using 14 position players and 12 pitchers in the ALDS, so a rookie like Ben Williamson or Harry Ford could be the odd man out.
Always nice to reinforce your playoff roster… with your top starter!
I like Seattle chances vs Toronto. The networks are despondent since neither are big TV markets, but this will be a great ALCS.
It might be a draw in Canada. A surprising number of Vancouver area residents are Mariners fans
yeast – Not surprising at all, fans are very territorial and therefore will most likely support the closest teams. It’s also much easier to follow teams in closer markets with both television/radio coverage and the ability to attend games.
Seattle is 230 kilometers from Vancouver, while Toronto is 4,173 kilometers away. Would you follow a team that’s almost 4,000 kilometers farther just because they are based in the same country as you?
BTW – There’s lots of Red Sox fans in Nova Scotia.
A ton of BC Jays fans always hop the border to invade T-Mobile Park every time the two teams face off.
This. It often feels like there are more Blue Jays fans than Ms at TMobile.
Vancouver and the Island get the Jays on Rogers. I think more of them are Jays fans.
I’ve been to games in Seattle literally surrounded by Jays fans, in all 8 directions on the compass. They seem to be 70%+ of the crowd. Smoking their weed in our peaceful streets. We may need to borrow those National Guard troops from Portland.
When the Expos existed they had lots of fans in the Champlain Valley (Burlington/Plattsburgh) areas.
Vancouver is blue jays town so they take over our park whenever they come
Sort of like when Montreal had the Expos they had a fan base and radio affiliates in the Burlington and Plattsburgh Champlain Valley areas.
I hope Seattle and Milwaukee play each other in the WS. Let’s mix it up.
That would be great, though TV would just hate it. There would be the Mariners-Pilots angle though.
wayne – Seriously, you think that angle is what’s most intriguing? LOL
I’m 99.999% sure the fact that neither team has ever won a World Series, and Seattle has never even been in a World Series, and the Brewers have been in only one way back in 1982 ….. THOSE are the angles that will attract both hard core and casual baseball fans.
Both fanbases are beyond starved for a championship, it will be great if one of them ends their franchise-history-long drought.
All the Brewers and Mariners fans who have never experienced a WS title …. it would be highly emotional, as Red Sox fans and Cubs fans and Rangers fans and White Sox fans (among others) are well aware.
I don’t know how I feel about that. If the M’s lose, then we’ll be on a shrinking island of never Champions!
West Coast World Series. Jerry’s Revenge for being publicly humiliated when Shohei first came over and didn’t even meet his most vocal suitor haha
As someone with no dog in the fight, Toronto and Seattle should be a great ALCS. Hopefully, it goes a full seven.
I’m so tired today from watching that game last night. Mariners/Jays should be an amazing series.
I still think of Toronto and Seattle as new teams.
Yes I am showing my age.
I own a NY Highlanders cap if it makes you feel better.
The battle of 1977
I’m on board with this AL series should be a good match up
Is it me or are only the Dodgers getting 4 pitch walks? Seattle should’ve had one last night that would’ve loaded the bases and turned into an out. Mookie gets that call.
I think im starting to be 1 of those in favor of runner on 2nd in xtra innings. Too many long low scoring gms in postseason. Great pitching is cool but lack of clutch hitting, and nobody coming thru making these gms rly boring . it was 2-2 after 7 last nite, nobody scored for 8 innings, nearly a full gm. these tms could barely scrape together walks, errors, HBP. dodgers the nite before was 1-1 in the 11th inning and only ended bec of the worst throw since 50 cent. this is supposed to be elite tms. unwatchable
Contests of will bore you? Suspense bores you? Sudden death endings bore you? Imo, classic moments that will be remembered and replayed for years are the opposite of boring.
They’re gonna replay polanco’s single in the 15th inning. Nobody will replay or rewatch the 8 innings in between where nobody scored. A game of ineptitude is not suspenseful
That was not boring in the slightest imo
Well, that’s a take to be sure. I was on the edge of my seat the entire game, and both teams had ample opportunity to score in extras, so you couldn’t ask for more than that, even with the Mafred Man. More than enough suspense for my taste.
More than ample opportunity and couldnt hit a lick if their lives were on the line. Tigers didnt score 14 of 15 innings. I actually fell asleep , it was so boring. And l love baseball. But This was incompetent offense for nearly 5 hours. Same with la/philly nite before. Elite offense, couldnt score a god damn lick. Orion made 50 cent look like pedro martinez, otherwise woulda gone to 18 or 20 innings still 1-1. Zero clutch hitting, nothing suspenseful abt it its pretty obvious
Great pitching exists.
It isn’t always bad hitting that leads to low scoring games.
I was certainly not bored during any part of that game.
What a huge addition for Seattle.
Interesting style match up. Toronto’s offense vs Seattle’s pitching is strength vs strength.
Good matchup. I’d say the Jays seem like the more balanced team, though. Should go at least 6 games.
Ugh, old York. Can you repost and say Mariners in 5, do your usual complaining about the jays, all that.
@Dustyslambchops23
Mariners in 5. Jays worst team since the White Sox of 2024!
– There, are you happy?
Yes thank you
Ric Flair approves.
