Munetaka Murakami To Be Posted This Offseason

By Darragh McDonald | October 10, 2025 at 11:59pm CDT

Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami is going to be posted by the Yakult Swallows of Nippon Professional Baseball, reports Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. It has long been expected that this would be the case, as it was reported three years ago that the plan was for Murakami to make the MLB move after 2025, but this report confirms that Murakami will be a key free agent to watch this winter.

The timing of the posting is not a coincidence. Under major league baseball’s international free agency rules, a player is considered an “amateur” if he is under the age of 25. These “amateur” players are subject to the international bonus pool system, wherein teams are hard-capped by annual budgets of roughly $4MM to $9MM. This was the case when Roki Sasaki was posted prior to his age-23 season. He eventually signed with the Dodgers and received a $6.5MM signing bonus, far less than he would have received with more open bidding. He is also treated like a minor leaguer, in that he will be making around the league minimum until he qualifies for arbitration and will be under club control until he accrues six years of big league service time.

Murakami won’t be in the same situation as Sasaki. He turned 25 in February will therefore be considered a professional under the current rules. Once he is officially posted, he will be free to negotiate with all 30 clubs for a period of 45 days and will have no restrictions on the kinds of offers he can receive. This situation is more analogous to that of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who also signed with the Dodgers. His 12-year, $325MM deal was in a far different stratosphere compared to Sasaki.

Sasaki was eager enough to come to Major League Baseball that he came young, despite the clearly lesser earning power with that path. Murakami has understandably waited until after his 25th birthday and should be in line for a nice payday.

What remains to be seen is exactly how strong his market will be. In his NPB career, he has shown massive power potential but also real strikeout concerns. He has generally been good for 30 to 40 homers per year, though he had a massive 56-homer season in 2022. This year, he missed a large chunk of the season due to an oblique injury and only got into 56 games, but he managed to launch 22 balls over the fence in that small sample.

He was also punched out 64 times in 224 plate appearances this year, a rate of 28.6%. He had that down to 20.6% during his amazing 2022 season but he’s been above 28% for three straight years now. Overall, he has hit .270/.394/.557 in his NPB career. Since MLB pitching features greater velocity and generally higher quality than NPB pitching, it’s possible his strikeout rate would increase with the move. For reference, the MLB average was 22.2% this year and there were only nine qualified hitters above 28%.

Murakami has primarily been a third baseman during his time with the Swallows. He has also dabbled at first base and even got a brief look in left field this year. Scouting reports have generally pegged him as a middling fielder who will likely end up at first base in the long run.

That will put more pressure on his bat but some clubs may be more comfortable with him playing third base for a few years. Teams will also have varying opinions about how he will be able to adapt to MLB pitching.

For players coming over from Japan, there have been all sorts of different results. As mentioned, Yamamoto had so much strong interest that he was able to secure a 12-year pact with opt-outs. Shota Imanaga got a creative four-year guarantee with a multi-year club option and player option structure after two seasons. Seiya Suzuki and Masataka Yoshida got straight five-year deals worth $85MM and $90MM respectively. Both of those hitters had better NPB batting averages than Murakami but without the same power ceiling.

Since the Dodgers have landed many Japanese stars, many fans expect that to be the outcome here. However, it’s not a perfect roster fit. The Dodgers have Freddie Freeman at first base and Shohei Ohtani in the designated hitter spot. They have an affordable $10MM club option to keep Max Muncy around as their third baseman next year. Signing Murakami can’t be totally ruled out but it may require them to move on from Muncy, who has been a cornerstone of the club for years and is still putting up good numbers, or perhaps try Murakami as an outfielder. Even if Muncy’s option is picked up, he’s slated for free agency after 2026, with Freeman only signed through 2027, so the long-term fit is better than in the short term.

The Red Sox would be a cleaner fit now, since Alex Bregman is likely to opt out of his deal and the club has questions at first base. The Mets have first base open with Pete Alonso set to opt out and they don’t have a clear answer at third base either. The Yankees could put him at first base, with Paul Goldschmidt becoming a free agent and Ben Rice capable of catching. The Cubs have Matt Shaw at third but almost signed Bregman last winter, so perhaps they are still willing to go after an external option there. The Tigers currently have Zach McKinstry at third but he’s capable of playing elsewhere. The Angels don’t have a long-term third base solution due to the ongoing injuries of Anthony Rendon. The Mariners are about to lose Eugenio Suárez to free agency. The Reds don’t have a definite answer at first base.

Over time, his market will become more clear. Whichever club signs him will also owe a posting fee to the Swallows. The posting fee is calculated as 20% of the contract’s first $25MM, 17.5% of the next $25MM, and 15% of spending above $50MM.

Where do the Dodgers play him? Freddie Freeman is locked in for two more seasons at 1B, and Ohtani is the DH. Have to imagine they pick up Muncy’s option at 3B (and this guy seems like he probably doesn’t stick at 3B in MLB anyway).

Reported somewhere? They have a $10mil club option on him, seems like an easy take for a franchise cornerstone who’s consistently putting up 3 WAR seasons.

For just a 10 mil option, he’s coming back. Where he plays after 2026 will depend on what kind of year he has, and if he can stay injury-free…..a big ask of him as of late.

Yeah, he will be a dodger. They will bring him along slow, maybe even play him in AAA. Muncy will be picked up, but he’s 35. Not only will the give the Dodgers another option at third, but they will also keep him away from other teams.

Dodgers should trade Max Muncy to the A’s so Max Muncy can pinch hit for Max Muncy and then hilarity will ensue.

2023 and 2024 were markedly worse than 2000 to 2022. Yes, he was good during 200 at bats in 2025. I think his upside is Eugenio Suarez with worse defense. His downside is maybe Michael Toglia.

Maybe he can sign a deferred contract and the Dodgers can cheat some more. The Ohtani deferred contract is the biggest financial advantage for a team that does not need any. MLB knows that and allows it because they want to see the Dodgers win every year. Its FUBAR for every other team in the West. Its amazing my Giants have 3 WS rings while the Dodgers only have 1 legitimate WS this century.

I am sooooo tired of all this cynical talk about the Dodgers signing ALL the good free agents, or AL the Japanese free agents–it just hasn’t been true. Thus guy, for instance, is more likely to land on one of several teams–the Giants, the Mariners, the Angels, the Red Sox, the Padres if they can shed some salary, others. My guess is the Mets, after Alonso leaves.

But saying that “you were owned” when you lose a short list-season series to me is a put-down.

Not going to dwell further, kudos to the Reds for making the post-season. Kudos to the Dodgers for making it past the Reds and Phillies.

The Dodgers don’t just sign every marquee player and never have to make tough decisions.

They let Seager and Turner walk in consecutive years to land 300m+ deals only to trade for Miguel Rojas to be their SS. At that time they had never signed a 300m free agent (Mookie was a trade & extend).

They don’t bother with the early extensions. Guys like Joc Pederson, Cody Bellinger, Walker Buehler and Dustin May would all been candidates to get big long term deals as each looked like a potential super star but all turned into lesser pieces then it seemed they would be. For the Dodgers, they got some good years from them and just move on.

The Dodgers do it right. This year 4 of the 8 largest payrolls didn’t even make the playoffs, they do every year. They have big payrolls but keep the bad contracts to a minimum and that comes from their ability to draft and sign amateur talent and develop them into big leaguers with high frequency. That’s despite always picking at the bottom of the draft and with small international pool money. They’re very patient with their youth to get them to the point where they have the best chance to succeed.

When they trade prospects for big name players (see the Betts & Scherzer/Turner trades) the prospects given up lose their luster real quick. I honestly can’t think of a trade they lost these past 5 years.

There is really no other team doing as well as the Dodgers in all facets of the game.

While I feel bad for the Reds having to face them in the Wild Card round, atleast you don’t have to be in the same division as them. Heck, for my Padres they have had another team in the divison not named the Dodgers win 3 World Series since they’ve even won the division.

Because they struck out at a high rate while in the Major Leagues. The average fastball velocity in the NPB as of 2024 was 91.3 MPH, and the average K% in 2025 was about 19-20%. Only three qualified NPB starters in 2025 struck out at least a quarter of opponents. Tatsuya Imai, who led all qualified starters in K% this year at 27.8%, wouldn’t have even been top five in MLB this season. NPB is a much more pitch-to-contact-centric than MLB, and with the deadball era they’re going through, there’s no reason not to pitch to contact.

Yeah, he slots in at 1st, if any defensive position at all.. From what little I’ve seen of him, he’s not a very good mover…and even at 3rd, his range would appear to be limited. He’s a DH waiting to happen….if he can bring his power with him. I’ve not seen too many Japanese power hitters come here and be successful against big league pitching. Whoever signs him, will be taking a leap of faith.

Shorter contract & less money for Geno regardless of who is better.

Id rather they pull out the red carpet for Naylor at 1st than Murakami there and plug the kids in at 3rd than K machine Geno at 3rd.

Bregman is a huge injury concern, and he’s going to be entering his age 32 season – for the money, no thanks. I’d much rather have 26 year old Murakami, not only powerful, but also very patient at the plate, draws lots of walks. All the concerns about him striking out a lot, I don’t see it… that’s how the game is these days. Guys strike out a lot. As long as they are productive when they are not striking out, there is a lot of value to be had.

Who are they possibly going to get who would be better than Murakami? I don’t think strike outs are nearly as much of a negative as many think they are. They’re part of the game. Most pitchers throw incredibly hard and with a lot of movement, strikeouts are not a big deal when there is huge production when they are not striking out. Murakami also draws a ton of walks. He’s an incredibly solid player. I’ve seen him play in Japan, the guy is the next coming of Sadaharu Oh.

I see the Dodgers moving Andy Pages or Teoscar Hernandez this off season and signing Kyle Tucker. Andy is hit or miss, but he’s young and controllable. Teoscar just didn’t capture the magic in a bottle this year that he had last season. He’s a terrible defender and doesn’t have the best discipline at the plate. I can see the Dodgers paying some to move on from him.

Yes, Willie played a little–very little– 3B in college and throughout his short minor league career. 58 games total. It’s a path taken by Johnny Bench and Joe Torre for what that is worth. Torre won the NL MVP after moving to 3B. I can’t give you exact references, but it’s been mentioned within the organization as something that might happen down the road. Also been mentioned that after Freddie’s contract ends, Will could move to first.

I assume that Freddie will get a couple year extension to play 2028 and 2029 with Dodgers to make it to 3000 hits given how much attention he paid to Kershaw’s 3000 Ks.

So if Ohtani is the DH and Freddie the 1B, I still did not think of Will at 3B. But let’s see Dalton’s great eye at the plate translate to hitting at the MLB first.

Pages is a keeper, had a very good year on both sides of the ball, and won’t be going anywhere. Teoscar has seen better days and is expendable. What can they get for him is the question. He’s not a free agent until 2027, at which point he’ll be close to 35….and the Dodgers still owe him almost 45 mil. No team in their right mind would likely pick that up.

Say what you want about Ohtani, but the one big negative is that he clogs the DH spot, which completely discounts any other players who can still contribute offensively, but are liabilities with the glove.

I doubt the Dodgers are the team that gives Tucker the super long huge deal.

Fun fact, when they signed Freddie Freeman for 162m in 2022 he was their largest free agent signing at that point. Ohtani, Yamamoto and Snell have since passed him.

Interestingly their other 100m+ FA deals (Kevin Brown, Trevor Bauer & Zach Greinke) all went to pitchers making Freddie Freeman a damn unicorn as the lone Dodger free agent signing to land 100m+ that doesn’t pitch.

SD had both a 1b spot open and a history of signing guys from overseas. Darvish and Matsui on the roster as well but don’t don’t see them mentioned at all.

HSK as a chance to return even – that might push Bog to 2b and Cro to 1b and maybe then not so much of a fit though.

The Padres can start Sheets full-time at 1B or pair him with an RH 1B/DH bat, although I’m not entirely opposed to Murakami. I don’t see how Kim returns unless he takes a massive discount; the team has too many pressing needs in the rotation to splurge on the infield (again).

“too many pressing needs in the rotation”

Musgrove, Pivetta, Darvish and Vasquez form a reliable 2-5. There are too many 6-10 guys to mention.

They need to extend King and the rotation is set.

That said, when has AJ not brought in an upside guy on a flexible contract so, I suspect he will.

If you just add Cease and King 2025 salary you get close to King AAV.

The 1b RH DH is exactly what is needed to pair with Sheets which is why I suggested this guy is a “fit” for SD.

Padres actual payroll was 211m last year. With arb estimates the padres are sitting right about 187m for next season already.

That’s with Suarez opting out and not picking up the options on Diaz or Hart.

So the padres have about 20-25m to spend to reach last year’s payroll. Will see in a few months if they plan to go over that amount this year.

They could turn and spend all of that on say king then fill in the 1b/dh with a lessor expensive player. Perhaps they will go over last years and bring in two somewhat expensive players.

Good news is they don’t have a lot of positions of need.

Simm, time will tell but I think King can be had for 20 AAV if you tack on a year 6/120 ish.

I hope no on Diaz and just use Campy for back up / RH DH – based on his proving his hitting at AAA.
I suspect he gets traded based on lack of interest in a call up / usage in 2025 though.

If bat doesn’t come around at MLB then a backup C doesn’t have to hit anyway. Just need to fill the DH RH at deadline.

Yeah I’m not totally sure why campy didn’t get some run this year.

They just don’t see to value him at all as a catcher. Maybe they play him at first this spring and see if he can be at least a platoon player there.

Kings market will be interesting. I think 20m is the low side but if you stretch it out to 6 years as you said that could work.

Problem is it just takes one team to be willing to pay say 30×5 and he will be out of the padres range. Or at least the range I’d expect them to go.

A lot of playoff teams are pretty set at TOR.

I don’t think any team is going to be offering Michael King 120-150m this off-season. Injury plagued 2025, didn’t look amazing when he came back in September (6 homeruns allowed to Mets & Reds in consecutive starts covering 8 innings).

Which is good in that it will be easier to keep him. Though the idea of having another pitcher locked up long term that might not give you 30 starts isn’t ideal.

I could see him returning on a 2 or 3 year deal with an opt-out. If he loves SD, which I think he does and he had spoken glowingly of the Padres making him a full-time starter and Ruben Niebla, having a better 2026 and re-entering free agency next year could be a realistic option. So I expect they’ll see if he just accepts a QO and goes that route.

Put me down for him returning for 2/45m (20/25) with an opt-out that comes with a 5m buyout.

Dylan Cease leads MLB in starts and strikeouts over the past 6 seasons and you get the feeling no one will be going crazy in an offer for him. In that time he has almost struck out 300 more batters then Blake Snell.

I wish we could offer him 6/150m with an opt-out out after year 3 or 4.

Murakami batting left handed and Machado playing 3B long term is why he’s not a great fit for SD in my opinion. Sheets is going to be a way cheaper and still decent 1B option as a lefty. There’s more defensive value with Murakami if you can use him at 3B so he’s a better fit for teams that can do that.

The padres do need slug, but I think a righty for 1B/DH would be preferable.

Lots of players have had to take a short deal and re-enter free agency because they didn’t get what they wanted. Some recent ones that come to mind:

Blake Snell (fresh off 2nd CY)
          Carlos Rodon
          Lucas Giolito
          Jack Flaherty

King had the kind of year (.8 fWAR, 1.2 bWAR, 4.42 FIP) that coupled with having nerve issues and missing half the season seems like he’s much more likely to have to settle for a 2/45m deal then get 120-150m.

It would have helped his case if he could have come back and looked like the pitcher he was previously. Instead his 2nd half numbers end up as:

6.11 era, batting line against of .306/.398/.597 with 6 homers allowed to only 12 k’s.

Herc – I agree that RH 1b / DH is preferred. As I said above, I don’t have any independent info on thing guy. The post never says he is LH so, I just assumed as majority are RH that he was and with the post pointing out he would not likely stay at 3b, I saw no reason to factor in Manny.

I do not believe that SD will have Sheets as its primary 1b option starting the season. He has value but an everyday 1b is not the best idea for SD.

Seeing as how this guy is LH, I agree he isn’t likely to be a big SD target but AJ is in on about every player that transitions to MLB so, who knows.

If he can be had on a 2 year deal then there is little fear that he will not pitch for SD next year.

I think the padres would be open to a power hitting 1b from the left side.

As of now their lefty bats are Merrill, sheets and Cronenworth.

Laureano being back next year will help when it comes to power from the right side.

I think some fans saw the padres in the playoffs and said we have too many left bats. Which was true but we had 6 of them without Laureano. One could argue we need more power from the left side. The padres two free agent starters are both left handed Arraez and Ohearn.

          Tatis
          Merrill
          Manny
          Mura
          Xander
          Sheets
          Laureano
          Cronenworth
          Fermin

Is a well balanced lineup. I think it’s unlikely still because of the price tag.

His Fangraphs international prospect write up says that he hit .154 against fastballs above 93mph in 2024. Doesn’t look like he had a great 2025.

Major league bullpens are full of guys pumping high 90s. I think if he gets a full season of at bats next year there is a very good chance that he leads the league in strikeouts.

Yeah but I don’t think they throw fastballs nearly as often in the league he’s in compared to the majors. With the higher volume I think he’ll be able to adjust. Much easier to adjust to velocity than off speed.

Fangraphs has a breakdown on him. His numbers crater against pitches 93 mph or higher. Probably not getting anywhere near the Yamamoto deal. Could see the Cubs making a play for him.

Honestly seems similar in profile and expected production to Nolan Gorman. Maybe with a bit of a better eye. But if you’re interested in that type of player, hit up the Cardinals and save yourself the tens of millions, haha.

It’s unfair how Japanese players get treated with the “Dodgers!!!!!!!” stereotype.

I don’t think Cubans, Venezuelans, Dominicans or Koreans got this amount of casual stereotyping…

I doubt Japanese players are offended by a rumor that they are going to the WS champs. Just not a good fit in this instance. I would like to see Murakami go to the Rockies myself – they should get at least one shiny toy!

His numbers look solid to me despite the strikeout rate. What you didn’t mention is that he hit .273 in just over 1000 games with an OBP close to ..400 since he walks a lot. So he’s taking pitches and working counts. Analytics may not be high on those things nowadays but I don’t pay attention to that nonsense..

Thanks for the input. The average may come down in MLB, but the walk rate and power should give him a solid OPS.

I saw him play in person last year. Even though he hit a dinger, his swing really did not impress me. He’s going to strike out well over 30 percent against better pitching, He’s also absolutely terrible at 3B. Don’t see him at the hot corner in MLB.

Some cheap team is gonna take a flyer on him because of his age. No way he gets decent contract with those K’s or he’ll probably go back to Japan for a big payday if he doesn’t get it here.

Theres plenty of players the Mets should go after. In my opinion, pass on Alonso. Suzarez/Naylor (28) /Arraraez (28). Or imo make a BIG splash. Marte gone ($20mil) Alonso gone (30 mil) Diez probably gone (21mil). Do whatever you need to do to trade nimmos contract ($20mil a year/5 more years). BRING IN MACHADO. He’s getting a big raise, the padres don’t want to pay it. Move him to 1st in 3 years. Give them nimmo to get rid of that contract and any of the prospect bats they want. Lindor/Soto/Machado is badass. Highest payroll team can’t resign Pete. They can’t miss the playoffs and have the same payroll the following year. You’ll end up throwing out a worst team next year. Build around the guys locked up for 10 years and you cannot block the DH spot in today’s game. These contract are too big. Man, if they’re ok with Miguel Ozuna past problems I’d take him on a one or two year deal at DH. Lindor/Soto/Machado/Ozuna/Naylor/Baty/Alverez and two cheap defense players in the outfield. One can dream, but I feel like it’s possible. They have the prospects, nimmos good and significantly cheaper than Machado. And they’re still paying Bogarts and Yu Darvish for years

As for the pitching…who knows. Padres need pitching badly possibly losing King and Cease. Still have Darvish for another 3 years. Phillies need pitching possibly Wheelers career over and could lose Suarez.

I don’t think the padres would shop Machado. He also has a no trade clause.

Machado will likely finish his career as a hall of famer and go in as perhaps the second greatest padres ever to play in their uniform. Unless Tatis passes his by in the counting stats which he very well may do. Then he would be the 3rd best player. Machado is also part owner of the San Diego FC team. I don’t think he wants to go anywhere.

The Padres can afford Machado. If they decided to trade one of manny or tatis my guess is it would be Tatis. Mainly because his age and contract ended at 35 would bring back manny more pieces plus the both get similar money the at the high marks.

I think the M’s have a real shot at Murakami. A lot of money is coming off the books for the M’s (Haniger, Garver, Geno Suarez, possibly Naylor) not to mention the influx of playoff cash!

If I’m not mistaken, Murakami grew up rooting for the M’s, because of Ichiro, and the M’s will have a need for 3B.

I don’t think it makes sense for the Mariners to resign Geno-barring a significant discount. It’s now safe to say, Geno and T-Mobile are not a great offensive match. I understand how beloved he is! Great teammate and veteran presence.

With the team need, increase in cash, M’s overall positive outlook, geography, it seems to be a logical fit on paper.

He referred to Max Muncy as “still putting up good numbers”….. HUH????

    The last 4 years he’s averaged about .215 with 20hrs and 65rbis….

When we start calling this good, baseball is in horrible shape.

20yrs ago, if you were a .215 hitter you couldn’t even keep a reserve role in the majors, let alone being a starter. We celebrate guys who bat under .200 for gods sake? (Ie Shwarber 2023). He finished top 20 in MVP batting under .200….. And it isn’t like pitching is that wonderful compared to years past.

It’s crazy. Baseball needs a revolution. It’s in pathetic shape.
