First baseman Pete Alonso has already said he will be opting out of his deal with the Mets and re-entering free agency, which could set up another will-they-won’t-they winter. A report from Will Sammon of The Athletic suggests that the Mets aren’t thrilled with Alonso’s defense and that spending more time at designated hitter may be necessary if the two sides do end up reuniting.
Alonso has been a mainstay at first base for the Mets for many years. He has started at least 134 games there in each of the past six full seasons, including at least 160 games in each of the past two campaigns.
While that reliable presence is valuable, the actual results have been less consistent. Defensive Runs Saved oscillated between giving Alonso positive and negative grades earlier in his career but has soured on him more recently. He was credited with a -3 score last year and -9 this season, bringing him down to -7 for his whole career. Outs Above Average has been more consistently down on him, as 2021 is the only year that metric had him above average. He’s at -33 for his career overall, including -8 in 2024 and -9 in 2025.
Alonso has only ever played for the Mets but the club seemed willing to let him go last winter. He reached free agency and lingered unsigned until February, when he and the Mets finally reunited on a two-year, $54MM deal which allowed him to opt out after the first season. Just prior to that reunion, Mets owner Steve Cohen publicly complained about the “exhausting” negotiations.
It was often speculated last offseason that the Mets were willing to let Alonso walk. At that point, the Mets would perhaps move Mark Vientos from third base to first base, leaving the hot corner open for someone like Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio or Luisangel Acuña. Now that Alonso is returning to free agency, that kind of speculation might return.
It’s unknown if Alonso is willing to spend more time in the DH slot or if he prides himself on continuing to be out there at first. If he is open to it, the Mets could accommodate him. Most of their DH at-bats went to Starling Marte this year, with Jesse Winker also in the mix before he got hurt. Both players are impending free agents, so the Mets could offer plenty of DH time to Alonso or someone else.
It’s also possible Alonso plays for a team other than the Mets for the first time. He didn’t get the long-term deal he was looking for last winter but his upcoming market could be stronger. He won’t be attached to a qualifying offer this time since players can only receive the QO once. He’s also coming off a better offensive platform, having increased his batting line from .240/.329/.459 in 2024 to .272/.347/.524 in 2025. But on the other hand, he’s about to turn 31 years old and other teams might be just as concerned about his glovework as the Mets.
Speaking of Marte, he spoke to Sammon this week, saying that he hopes to play for several more years and would be open to doing that as a Met. “Only God knows, but with continued good health, I’d love to have the opportunity to play at least three or four more years,” Marte said, “and continue to be part of this team and continue to help the young guys grow.”
Marte last reached free agency ahead of the 2022 season, when he was going into his age-33 campaign. He and the Mets agreed to a four-year, $78MM pact, which is now ending. The first year went well, as he slashed .292/.347/.468 for a 133 wRC+ and stole 18 bases.
However, he required groin surgery after that season and hasn’t been at that level since. He made multiple trips to the IL in 2023 and hit just .248/.301/.324 for a wRC+ of 75. He has bounced back somewhat in the two most recent seasons. He just hit .270/.335/.410 for a 112 wRC+ this year but, as mentioned, was mostly a DH. He only logged 65 innings in the outfield.
The bat is still decent but he’s about to turn 37 years old, so he’s probably ticketed for a part-time role somewhere. Based on Sammon’s piece, Marte seems to also provide intangibles as a clubhouse leader. That could help his market somewhat but he’ll have considerably less earning power than in his previous trip to free agency. As mentioned, the Mets have DH at-bats available, though they will probably wait to see how things go with Alonso and other free agents before they consider bringing back Marte.
Elsewhere on the roster, Andy Martino of SNY provides an update on left-hander Sean Manaea. Martino says Manaea finished the season with his elbow feeling good and may not need surgery, though the final decision will wait until after a cool-down period.
Manaea began the season on the injured list due to an oblique strain. He was working back from that injury in June when a loose body was found in his elbow. Despite that elbow issue, he made it back from the IL in July.
His results from there weren’t great, though there was less concern under the hood. A 5.64 earned run average is obviously not good but his 28.5% strikeout rate and 4.6% walk rate were both strong. He allowed 13 home runs in just 60 2/3 innings, with a home run to flyball rate of 19.4% in that small sample. His 3.08 SIERA, a measure that corrects for such abnormalities, suggested his ERA would have been much better with some normalization in a larger sample size.
The Mets signed the lefty to a three-year, $75MM deal coming into this season. They will obviously want him to be fully healthy and back to his usual self next year, especially with questions all throughout the rest of their rotation. The fact that he’s trending towards not needing surgery is encouraging, though further updates should be forthcoming in the future.

Here’s Some fun multiple choice
What should mets do to improve in 2026?
A hire new GM
B Hire new manager
C hand out more half billion $ deals
D ask a priest to perform an exorcism to lift the team curse
E all of the above
Metsorcist
Jesus, chandlerbing is obsessed with the Mets.
Stearns is about as good as you can get.
Stearns is a disaster. He’s missed on every signing and most all trades. And his manager sucks.
Lots of talk about the DH role being wide open in Queens, but should it be? I feel Soto has to spend 100 games at DH next year minimum, his defense is soooooooo bad.
It shows how misleading errors are. Soto made his first error in late September but is clearly a poor right fielder. Would he be better in left. Do the Mets want Alonso but only at dh? Do they not sign him because they want Soto at dh and don’t want Alonso at first base. They have to answer these questions.
Errors are very misleading. Defense matters. If Judge comes in hard on that ball in game 1 they are not playing tonight.
Disagree. Soto was more than adequate in RF.
I think he was pretty below average in his fielding capabilities.
He did improve tho, most of his negative fielding numbers were in the first half and he was league-average for the second half.
When he was signed he commented that he was committed to improving defensively and on the bases.
Also his arm did hold some runners.
I think one reason why the Yankees let him go was they wanted judge in right and they are stuck with Stanton.
SahqFoo you think -12 OAA is more than adequate?
LMAO to “the Yankees let him go…”
i’m obviously talking eye test. I didn’t watch every game but what I did see he was fine there. I never once thought ‘oh the Mets have a problem here’. Where he was a problem was risp in the 1st half but he turned that around. I have no concerns about him going fwd.
“Would he be better in left.”
Nimmo is over there and his defense isn’t good, either. Plus he has one of the worst arms in the majors, so there’s no way he’ll be switching to RF. Soto at least has a good arm.
They already overpaid on Soto, so they’re stuck with him. Negative value as a fielder but too young to be a full time DH. So they probably keep him in RF (since he seems happy there) and overpay on a CF and 3B. Let Alonso go. Maybe Tampa Bay could sign him a new owner doing something stupid hoping to interest fans. I mean they tried and failed to sign Freddie Freeman.
The Mets are very happy to be “stuck with him.”
The only thing I can say is it should be interesting to see what Alonso’s market will be this off-season.
There are a lot of teams that could use that bat in their DH slot.
True but his main value, Home Runs, is trending downwards. He might still get a 3 or 4 year deal but I don’t think he gets as much as he thinks he’s worth.
I think last year was his best chance to get really big money. But when they slapped the qualifying offer on him, it reduced interest significantly.
He’ll still get paid, but the money that was spent last off-season for bats was large.
I think the market for Alonso as a DH will be strong, but if he is going to only want to play first base and no DH, I don’t see many teams too interested.
“I think the market for Alonso as a DH will be strong”
I disagree. DH-only players rarely get the kind of deal Alonso wants. And if you’re willing to spend that much on a DH this offseason, wouldn’t Schwarber be a better option?
Schwarber is a one-dimensional player. He’s a great Home run hitter and I wish we had him on our team to DH, but he can’t do anything else anymore. At least with Alonso, you can play him at first and DH so from that point of view, He’s going to get a good amount of looks. Also, once Schwarber is off the market, that opens up more opportunities for Alonso.
Schwarber has hit 38+ HRs, walked 106+ times, and scored 108+ runs for three straight seasons. He even had 10 SBs vs 2 CS this season.
I’ll take a “1-D player” “that can’t do anything else” all day.
He is one of the leaders in walks every year so your statement is false.
Schwarber should decide to go all numbers to get the highest contract ever. Sign a one year 45 million contract with the Rockies, hit 85 home runs. Sign a 1 biillion dollar 10 year deal with the Dodgers (of course 75 percent of that will be defered). Then first game with the Dodgers gets injuried a misses at least half of the contract on the IL.
It’s all going to come down to what Alonso is looking for. If he wants $175MM he’s going to linger out there for a long time. If he’s content getting with a 4 year deal at $22-25 then he’ll have plenty of teams interested. Or if he’s content with another higher AAV pillow.
I think you’re light on the AAV and he shouldn’t need to take another pillow deal after the season he had.
4/100 or maybe 5/120-125 max for Alonso is about what I was thinking as his first base D looks less viable. Schwarbs is out there this year too.
The pillow contract was if he asks for a huge number again and doesn’t get it. We went through this once.
4/112 is my guess. I’m sure he will have a few teams at that number.
Forget moving Vientos to third base: he’s awful there too. Sorry, Mark.
meckert: No need to move Vientos to third base. It’s his primary position.
I’m cool with Soto and Alonso splitting the DH spot, that means they only have one of their gloves in the field at any one time.
A 700+ million DH. I am thrilled that the Yankees did not win the Soto sweepstakes.
Except he’s not the DH
He will be though Billy, he is a butcher is RF already.
But he’s not, and won’t be for at least the next few years. Even with the DH essentially an open position (due to injuries to Winker and Marte and Vientos’s struggles), Soto only appeared as the DH three times this year.
His Metrics are horrific. DRS -13 OAA -12 Arm value -2. The eye test is arguably worse.
I saw something from Katie Lang that showed his negative defensive stats were from the first half and he was a league average defender in the second half.
If he was learning how to play @ CitiField then this holds water.
“I am thrilled that the Yankees did not win the Soto sweepstakes.”
lmao, enjoy counting Hal’s money while Soto goes into the Hall of Fame as a Met, I guess. If George were still alive, Soto never would have left and the Yankees wouldn’t be looking up at anyone regarding payroll. As long as Yankee fans are OK with Hal not going full throttle, they won’t be winning a WS any time soon.
Pete Alonso is not a all in team player but rather just money hungry so I vote that the Mets let him walk and choose either someone in house or someone that actually cares about making the team better.
What on earth are you basing that on?
He is basing it on having a smooth brain.
He is a great teammate. I love guys who want to win and take team friendly deals as much as the next guy. But you can’t fault Alonso for looking for max dollars. He always gives 100 percent when under contract that’s all you can really ask for.
Actually, you’re both right. You’re right on everything. He’s right in that Pete is very focused on AAV and hired Boras because he was insulted by the team’s 7/158M extension offer. That might have been a little low, but he thought he was worth 10/300M at that time. As a future DH, he was not even close.
I’m pretty sure that Pete and Boras are looking for a minimum of 6/200M.
Your 100 percent spot on Cleaver but I fail to see how that makes him a “bad teammate” as suggested above, if when he is here he gives 100 percent and is good in the clubhouse, and by all accounts Pete is, then he is a good teammate. The financials are separate IMO.
“At that point, the Mets would perhaps move Mark Vientos from third base to first base,”
lol, if they’re sour on Alonso’s defense, I don’t think this is a good plan.
Yes, Alonso actually replaced Vientos at first base in one game for “defensive purposes.” Alonso will never get a gold glove, but at least he’s good at scooping out ball in the dirt, which is an underrated skill.
Marte signing with the Pirates as their big offensive upgrade?
Maybe if McCutchen retires, Marte can take over as PIT’s DH
They can split the difference!
Hope you Mets fans get a full season out of Manaea next year. When he was a Giant he was serviceable at best and did have some injuries. There were some fans who wanted him gone and some wanted him to stay. He was a great teammate. As it was he decided to leave. As far as his 2024 season, I think he had somewhat of a nice season finally. I think he’ll fall somewhere in between though in the future. I hope his 2026 season is his best but probably won’t be. Good guy too.
Do my Nats have a shot at Schwarber or Alonzo?!?!
Maybe Both???
Lerner!!! Open Up Ur Pocketbook …
First of all, it’s your. Also, the nationals would have to severely overpay for either one. I don’t see it happening.
If the Nats were closer to contending, I could see them being in on Alonso. But that is not the case this offseason.
There’s probably little chance that the Phillies let Schwarber go, unless they win the WS this year. The Nats could use his leadership but I don’t see them spending that big on a DH while they have excess outfielders to cycle through that slot.
I think Alonso will remain a Met. Who do they replace his bat with? Vientos needed to improve this season to become a viable option but regressed. Let him DH and try to regain the 2024 form. Baty had a decent year and I think his success/progression is more likely than Vientos. I’ve said this before, Cohen is trying to build a legacy for himself but the franchise. Alonso could rise to David Wright levels if he spends his career with the Mets or better if they win a WS. I’ve always liked Marte and would love to have him back as a veteran bench presence. Just need a rotation that any day could go 6 or 7 innings rather than 4 or 5. Worked in 2024 but they eventually pitched deep into games as the season progressed. Depending on 3 rookie SPs to save the season in September is no recipe for success.
Kyle Tucker.
The Mets could move soto to first or dh and sign tucker.
I don’t know if Soto fields any better at first.
Alonso to the Red Sox to play first base, hit 50 plus bombs, and have 140 plus RBI’s with a bunch of high OBP guys in front of him in that lineup. Sox were missing a big bat in their lineup and Alonso would fit nicely, and the Monster would play well for him.
I would love to see Schwarber go to the Sox, but I think he resigns with Philly and the Sox land Pete.
Trade Casas away with Duran for a front rotation pitcher to match with Crochet, and let the youngsters ball out with a big bat in the heart of the lineup.
Call Seattle with that Casas Duran package if Naylor walks. While I’m not sure what Casas turns into but no ball hits the ground with a J-Rod Duran and Arozerena OF
Luis Castillo all yours like he almost was last offseason. Toss in a bag of gently used BP balls as well.
Finally the Mets have figured out that while Pete’s bat wins 10 games per year his glove costs them 6 or 7.
The Mets aren’t cursed: they just can’t defend.
Alonso is sub standard with a glove. Soto is your best outfield arm but would be a poor 4th on the Marlins. Too many balls hit into the outfield find grass. I might say more, but I only pay attention when they play the Marllns
Looking at the Mets, my question can the Mets afford to lose Alonso? Who replaces Alonso, maybe an old Goldschmidt, or maybe the Astro’s want to trade Walker are these two good enough replacements for Alonso? or maybe the Mets go in house for their replacement if they don’t resign Alonso. I say Alonso has the chips on his side of the table, it would be a real bad move to let Alonso walk. out the door. There are a couple teams that may be looking for an Alonso, maybe Boston, San Francisco, outside shot maybe Arizona and Houston.
Alonso in Cincinnati is a nice match. Cincy had a -2.1 WAR from 1B.
Brewers and Cubs were #3 and #6 in scoring runs in MLB in 2025. Reds were middle of the pack 14th. Pete could help close that gap.
Mets just fired Eric Chavez, Jeremy Barnes, Jeremy Hefner, and others today. I’m ecstatic
@nymetshea
How many losses were those coaches responsible for?
How about the Grounds Crew, do they need to be fired too? The Beer Vendors?
The Mets did not have enough talent. The starting staff were all back end starters (maybe the late season callups could one day be front end), the bullpen had holes, the defense was poor.
David Stearns is a solid baseball exec, but for 2025, he put a poor product on the field. He should just own it and move forward, get it right for 2026.
Marte should retire, Pete will be suiting up elsewhere and Manaea hopefully stays healthy next year but def isn’t more than a #3 in the rotation.
