As usual, the Yankees have been linked to many of the top names on the free agent market, with Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger noted as two of the more prominent players on New York’s radar. How exactly the front office is ordering their internal wish list remains to be seen, but Jon Heyman of the New York Post writes that Tucker “appears to be a backup plan” to Bellinger. Familiarity and defensive flexibility are the key elements, as Heyman notes that the Yankees already know Bellinger can handle playing in the pressurized environment of the Bronx. Tucker is primarily a right fielder who would have to move over to left field in New York due to Aaron Judge’s presence, while Bellinger brings more defensive utility as a player capable of playing all three outfield positions and first base.
It can also be assumed that the Yankees would prefer paying Bellinger’s lower price tag — MLBTR projects Tucker to land an 11-year, $400MM deal, whereas Bellinger is projected for a relatively more modest $140MM over five years. Signing Tucker would also cost the Yankees draft picks and international bonus money, whereas those qualifying offer-related penalties don’t apply if Bellinger is re-signed.
Here’s some more from around the AL East…
- The Blue Jays had interest in Phil Maton before the veteran reliever signed with the Cubs, Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith reports. This tracks with the Jays’ previous interest in the righty, as Toronto was previously linked to Maton when he was a free agent last winter and at the trade deadline before Maton was dealt from the Cardinals to the Rangers. Toronto is known to be looking for a reliever to supplement or even replace Jeff Hoffman in the closer’s role, but Maton also would’ve been a good addition as a bullpen workhorse who has shown an ability to handle higher-leverage work in the past.
- Kristian Campbell will be playing winter ball, the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier reports, as the Red Sox continue to look to get Campbell on track after a shaky debut season in the majors. A meteoric rise in his first two pro seasons earned Campbell a spot on Boston’s Opening Day and an eight-year, $60MM extension shortly thereafter, but he hit only .223/.319/.345 over 263 plate appearances as pitchers adjusted quickly to Campbell after his hot start. Demoted to Triple-A Worcester in June, Campbell hit decently well at Triple-A but with little power, and he also was toggled around the diamond seeing time at first base, second base, and all three outfield positions. Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told Speier and other reporters earlier in November that Campbell was focused on regaining some weight and becoming stronger to better handle the grind of a full season. The pricey contract along will keep Campbell involved in Boston’s plans, though it remains to be seen how he’ll fit into a 2026 team that has a crowded outfield, and has been linked to multiple major free agent infielders.

He’ll earn the contract.
mafia – If you’re referring to KC, he earned a roster spot only because he was willing to sign a very team-friendly contract offer. Neither Roman nor Marcelo were willing, which is why they were both sent down for much of the first half of the season.
The Red Sox needed a RH hitter in the lineup which Campbell is.
Yet Anthony ended up signing a long term arguably team friendly contract anyway.
Bellinger back to the Yankees. Book it!
Bellinger to whomever pays the most $$$, book it.
* whoever, book it
Oops, it looks like I was redirected to mlbgrammarrules.com again.
Oh, I read it wrong. I didn’t understand it as a correction.
I thought it was just one more funny Comment in the line.
Not just “whoever pays the most, book it” but just “whoever, book it” lol.
Belli staying in NY makes a ton of sense for both sides.
It’s his 1 big contract. Sense doesn’t play into it. It’s all about $$$$.
@senior
History shows the Yanks aren’t afraid to overpay a guy on a shorter term deal. He fills a need altho they have a 1b and 3 OF as we speak.
It makes sense for the NYY. How does it make dollars for Bellinger? No taxes in Texas. Small ballpark in Cinci. Highest bid makes sense.
“Jon Heyman of the New York Post writes that Tucker ‘appears to be a backup plan’ to Bellinger.”
That’s quite an expensive backup plan.
Plan A: Bellinger
Plan B: Tucker, Skenes, Valdez, and Suarez
– Heyman
It’s like telling your parents that for Christmas you’d like a Trek electric bike but would gladly settle for a Lamborghini motorcycle.
Skenes is a “plan B”? haha
Seems to me the Yankees are covering their bases with Belli so when they can’t land Tucker they’re still in his good graces. Meaning he is actually the backup plan.
Nah there setting the market ie tucker won’t sign until bellinger signs
Belli and Tucker contracts aren’t going to be in the same stratosphere, so what Belli signs for is irrelevant to Tucker. Tucker ain’t waiting for Belli.
I wouldn’t touch tucker with a 10-foot pole at the reported prices & his health history. Better to gamble on Clase returning to mlb …
He’s played in 80% of available games in the last 5 seasons, his injuries have been more on the flukey side.
I don’t know. Missing most of the 2nd half of two seasons in a row and asking what? 400 mill for 10 years? Is a red flag.
He played in 132 games last year, he fractured his hand sliding in to 2B and played through the injury then hurt his calf.
Despite missing 30 games, he finished 36 in the entire league in value provided.
The year before he fouled a ball off his leg.
I dunno, I guess i prefer specifics over broad statements like ‘missing most of 2nd half’ or is a red flag. I’m sure GMs looking to hand out money will do the same
Luck is a part of it and the facts show outside of some poor luck he’s been both healthy and elite
injuries, whether degenerative or freakish, take a toll on the body and you’re taking about signing a guy to a 10 year deal. it’s all risky.
There’s no cal ripkens anymore and these are the realities of mlb free agency.
@dusty
that’s understood but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make proper evaluations of the risks. To say that shouldn’t be a factor in consideration before committing to $400 mil to Tucker is reckless and absurd.
Gonna go ahead and guess that teams will indeed do proper evaluations.
There are still some Ripken’s left. They’re all pitching for the Blue Jays! Cease, Gausman and Berrios. Them and Patrick Corbin(!?!?) are the only pitchers to have started at least 30 games in each of the last 5 seasons.
Is there any part of 10 Year deal that isn’t inherently risky?
I see Tucker pulling a Jason Heyward once he signs.
Come on, Kyle Tucker is a way better player than Jason Heyward ever was.
Leo you are correct Sir!
Yanks sign Belly/Imai/ Okamoto/Theilbar / Tyler Rogers/ and Armstrong.
That’s a lot to of money
Well said
* well written.
Red Sox signed Bellinger.
Coop-what? Say it ain’t so. Hope all is well.
Not a single chance of that ever happening ever even remotely. 0% book it.
Gary, there’s more than a zero chance. Very remote chance, but they could sign him, to play 1st. It’d have to be part of a mini roster overhaul & multiple trades, but it could happen.
I’d prefer Belli over Alonso, that’s for sure.
Maybe, maybe…. Sign Bregman, sign Beli, Trade Duran et al for another TOR (probably needs to be a 3 team deal), find a couple of useful relievers. They’d still have lots of good young depth. One can dream/hope.
I see what you’re saying and you’re right. But he wants bopper outfielder money that teams with holes on the grass will give him.
For the Red Sox he’s more a first base “opportunity” just as you’re saying, but we don’t need a full-time first baseman.., we have options and definitely don’t need him in the outfield.
So I think there’s no way he takes what the Red Sox would feel he’s worth to them. I hope that makes sense.
Greg – I think KC is ticketed for first base, if he learns how to hit again and Casas becomes a non-factor.
That does make sense.
1st base is an issue for the RS. Can’t rely on Casas at this point. I don’t like Alonso long term. If he were 3 years, 20-25 per, fine. But he’ll want 6 150 or something, and that won’t age well. The RS might be better off re-signing Lowe, re-signing Bregman, and picking up a couple of bullpen guys. I think the bullpen projects quite well, but it’d be better with a couple more demons to go wtih Chapman & Whitlock.
Maybe, but he didn’t spend a lot of time in worcester at 1b. Which I thought was (one of) the reason(s) he was sent down. Every box score I looked at (which was probably less than half) he seemed to be playing another position.
Lowe played quite well. I’d be okay with him, Breg, KC for depth. Maybe he’s learnt how to play 2b. Maybe Meyer breaks out.
I think the offense will be fine (with Breg). 7th in the league in runs last year. So if Meyer, Kev, Casas contribute more than they did. Plus a full season from Anthony.
They’re hard to find, but I want a couple of bull pen guys. And a TORb to pair with Crochet. If Gray is 3, Bello 4, that’s awesome. Then having Early, Tolle, Drohan etc when injuries occur, spot starts etc.
Fever- Do you think that Alonso is on their radar to play first and switch to DH at some point? Not sure he is the best option, but he would add a power bat.
Greg- Lowe was not bad and I expected them to keep him, but he is not going to provide the power bat they were lacking. If all they do is bring back Bregman and Lowe, I think they will still be lacking the clutch power bat they really needed last year to go deep into the playoffs.
Uncle – Yes, they made it quite clear Casas isn’t guaranteed a job at first base.
I have a hard time believing the Mets would be outbid though.
Uncle – Agreed, the power upgrade will likely be at first base unless Bregman walks.
Pedro, they do need more power, I think an Alonso contract will quickly turn into a Yoshida contract – not a bad player, but only worth half (or less) the money. He’s also a poor fielder.
Both Tucker & Alonso give me Rendon vibes.
Gary – Danno already did book it ;O)
Are you sure? What were the chances of Baltimore trading from their starting pitching depth?
Belli will go to the highest bidder.
Yankees have enough players. Let some other teams sign some.
Like the Dodgers?
no…. No!!
Sorry, hit enter too soon – that is a prediction. Sox didn’t sign Bellinger. I’m predicting they will sign him. But he fits much better in Yankee Stadium pulling homers into that short porch in RF.
What are they going to do with the four OFs they already have? Sort of a waste to pay more than anyone else and then use Bellinger at 1B or DH. And since Campbell is their backup plan for Casas, 1B gets a little crowded, too.
Actually, Campbell may wind up in the OF. I doubt the Red Sox sign Bellinger. He is older, a Boras client and a LH hitter which all seem to work against the Red Sox signing him.
so $400 million is the backup plan if we can’t land the $150 million short porch merchant. I see.
Belleinger is not the type player thats going to put a team over the hump. He’s had average years and 1 great year in 2019 which alot of players did. He’s not going to break the bank…
Yankees need to get Kwan they have been needing a lead-off hitter for a longgggg time. Make it happen Cashman. Dominez, Gil, and others. I’d take Bellinger back to but as of now not a guarantee. Why not get both
Bellinger would make a perfectly fine lead-off hitter.
A better one than Kwan, that’s for sure
@mlb
Kwan wins the award for the most overrated player I like in the mlb. I love his contract hitting ability but PLEASE… PLEASE.. keep in mind that the most important thing you want from a lead off guy should be the ability to get on base, as measurable by his OBP (.330). Grisham (.348), Beli (.334) and Dominguez (.331) all outperformed Kwan in that department. Dominguez stole just as man my bases. I would argue the level of defense and defensive flexibility makes Beli just as valuable as Kwan. But the idea that the Yanks should trade Dominguez for Kwan, or even the audacity of thinking to include Gil from am already thin rotation is lunacy.
Why is everyone so down on Dominguez? It was his first full year and at age 22, held his own despite not getting full- time play. But a .257/.330 line is solid to me for a 22 yo rookie in the spotlight. I think the power will come in time and we just have to hope he can be a decent OF with work. Hold on to him to at least see what Grisham can do this year. Plus Stanton is due to create a need for a bat.
Sign Belli, trade Wells for Murphy, trade Volpe + for Seager and his contract, trade 6 young controllable MLB ready players for Skenes, then trade Rodon and Jazz for Hoerner and prospects.
Hoerner 2B
Seager SS
Judge RF
Belli CF
Stanton DH
Rice 1B
Murphy C
McMahon 3B
??? LF
Skenes
Cole
Fried
Schlittler
???
Yeah, I’m a little buzzed already
@Drcox
Buzzed? Brother your are on several. I mean you are on the party pack get the epi pen ready.
Which deals exactly do you think aren’t possible my friend?
just a combo of why would WE do that, why would THEY do that and this person isn’t a good as you think.
just a combo of why would WE do that, why would THEY do that
Because it’s fckng time to build a winning team, a team that isn’t full of boom or bust hitters. For example, I would much rather have Hoerner than Jazz. Much rather! Seager is one of the best hitters in baseball and also great in the playoffs. They were just dominated by the Blue Jays!
@DrCox: You might get Murphy for Wells and Volpe, but doubt AA does a straight up Murphy for Wells. How about Murphy and Bummer for Wells, Volpe, and the Yanks best AAA relief arm—-if you’ve got a good enough buzz, lol? Better consider that you’re taking on 3 years of Murphy at $15M per and Bummer at $9.5M in 2026.
@DrCox: Might also consider that the Braves might not want to be stuck w/2 lefty hitting catchers/DH w/Baldwin and Wells.
The Skenes deal won’t happen. Even the Pirates aren’t interested in trading Paul Skenes (nor should they be) for any package you offer. He is one of the very few untouchable players in MLB that aren’t getting dealt for any package.
I would honestly love to know what it would truly take to acquire him with all the club control they still have with him. We are probably talking a Herschel Walker type deal just to get them to even think about it.
The Skenes deal won’t happen. Even the Pirates aren’t interested in trading Paul Skenes (nor should they be) for any package you offer
Do you really think the Pirates would reject Gil, Schlittler, Lagrange/Warren, Jasson, Volpe/Lombard and Jones for Skenes? They would accept such an offer in a heartbeat! The Yankees won’t do that, but that’s another story.
No problem, I’d rather sign Realmuto than trading Wells AND Volpe for Murphy. Not much interest in Bummer.
Buy*
Yankees have never built a championship team.
@DrCox
The fact that you want to trade your 2nd best SP and Jazz, a 4 WAR player for another 4 WAR player should make it clear why that would be wrong.
If you land players like Seager and Belli and trade away a lot of prospects, you also need to trade away money and acquire prospects. If you have Skenes, Cole, Fried and Schlittler, you could trade Rodon. At the end of the day your offense and rotation would be much better than last year’s.
There better be a lot of plus in that deal for Seager. Volpe isn’t even close to getting that done.
Bellinger has had 1 1/2 All-Star level seasons since winning the MVP in 2019.
I think Tucker was the priority until Trent Grisham took the qualifying offer that somehow the Yankees thought he wouldn’t. Bellinger will clearly be the cheaper option and that is what it looks like they want.
how do you know the Yankees thought that?
Bellinger and Williams will sign with the Dodgers.
The Dodgers would sign non-Japanese players?
The Yankees stink.
That is NEVER wrong.
them Yanks iz never gonna win as many World Series as the Nanettes
Yeah, we’ve got a couple know it all fans over on the Red Sox articles too. We just shake our heads. Sure, wondering what happened to the thumbs down option. It would save a lot of time.
Hey, maybe I can make my own. Let’s see if this works…
👎
Good work Gary. Happy second Thanksgiving meal.
youtube still has a dislike button (thumbs down)
As usual, the Yankees will be all talk and very little action. Once all the best free agents are gone, Cashman can do his annual dumpster diving.
no s**t
@keena
“Fans” like you are maddening. Dumpster diving? Yanks have spent over $1 billion in the last 4 to 5 years to bring in Cole, Rondon and Fried and to retain Judge. They offered Soto $700 mil. You call signings like Goldy and trades for Williams, Beli, etc “dumpster diving” but I call it good moves.
Stop considering Bellinger as a viable CF candidate. He has not been an everyday CF in years. Better at DH than anywhere and a corner OF, possibly a 1B.
Better at DH? Bellinger is a very good defensive player. He was +12 DRS in 2025. Why on Earth would you waste that at DH? It’s true that he’s probably best as only a fill-in center fielder, but in the corner spots he’s an elite defender.
It is going to be interesting to see how Casas and Campbell pan out in the long term. I was initially intrigued by Casas, but overall the results have been disappointing. I assume he is going to end up being traded and it seems like it is time to move on from him.
With the contract they gave to Campbell, they will give him every opportunity to succeed. Having him play winter ball will be a good step to getting him back on track. You always want to root for the young guys that have come up through the system, I really hope Campbell can figure out major league pitching.
True, but Casas has had multiple years in the big leagues to prove himself and I don’t believe he was interested in locking himself up to a long term contract that would allow the team to have control at a reasonable cost. If so I think they would be more patient. I may be completely wrong and he may end up being our everyday 1st baseman.
Casas has had two devastating injuries in consecutive years. Health is the biggest factor. I suspect no team is going to offer what Breslow wants for him so they keep him.
That was my biggest question when all the trade talk started about Casas. I have not heard any recent updates on his recovery at this point, so don’t even know if he will be ready for spring. I would assume if he is traded it will be part of a package, but I agree that it is far from guaranteed that anyone is willing to give up much for him.
Very true, Casas could get healthy and completely turn things around. I was not a fan of the Sale trade, but did not expect him to become an ace again.
