Angels Sign Alek Manoah To Major League Deal

By Darragh McDonald | December 2, 2025 at 11:50pm CDT

The Angels announced they have signed right-hander Alek Manoah to a major league deal. Jeff Passan of ESPN previously reported the agreement and that Manoah will make $1.95MM next year. The Halos had multiple 40-man vacancies and didn’t need to make a corresponding move for the Covenant Sports Group client.

It’s a clear buy-low move for the Angels. Manoah was once a first round pick and top prospect, then became a Cy Young candidate as of a few years ago. But more recently, injuries and underperformance bumped his stock to the point that he was non-tendered by Atlanta last month.

The Blue Jays selected Manoah 11th overall in 2019. By 2021, he was making big league starts. He took the ball 20 times that year and threw 111 2/3 innings, allowing 3.22 earned runs per nine. His 8.7% walk rate was around average while his 27.7% strikeout rate was quite strong. 2022 was his first full season. He made 31 starts and logged 196 2/3 innings with a 2.24 ERA. His strikeout rate dropped to 22.9% but he also improved his walk rate to a 6.5% clip. He finished third in American League Cy Young voting behind Justin Verlander and Dylan Cease.

It’s basically been downhill since then. He struggled badly enough in 2023 to get optioned to the minors multiple times. He finished the year with a 5.87 ERA over 19 starts. His strikeouts dipped to a subpar 19% rate while his walk rate climbed to an ugly 14.2% pace.

Going into 2024, the Jays reportedly had some openness to trading Manoah, with the Angels checking in on him at that time. However, the Jays didn’t pull the trigger on a deal and he opened the 2024 season with Toronto. He was slowed by some shoulder soreness during the spring and began the season on the injured list. He was reinstated in May and then made five decent starts, with a 3.70 ERA, 25.2% strikeout rate and 7.8% walk rate. However, he then went back on the IL, this time due to an elbow sprain. He required Tommy John surgery in June of that year.

Manoah then spent the rest of that season on the IL. The Jays held him on the roster through the winter and tendered him a contract. They avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $2.2MM salary for 2025.  They then put him back on the 60-day IL in March. He began a rehab assignment in July. Rehab assignments normally are capped at 30 days for pitchers but guys recovering from Tommy John can push that to 60.

By the middle of September, Manoah’s clock was up but the Jays had a rotation featuring Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, Chris Bassitt, José Berríos and Max Scherzer, with Trey Yesavage lurking in Triple-A. Manoah also hadn’t done much to force the issue, as he had a 19.6% strikeout rate and 12.8% walk rate during his rehab outings. He was reinstated from the IL but optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.

Later that month, the Jays needed a 40-man spot to reinstate Anthony Santander from the 60-day IL. Manoah was designated for assignment as the corresponding move. With the trade deadline having passed, the Jays had to put him on waivers, with Atlanta claiming him. They held him on their roster for a while but then non-tendered him. It might seem a bit odd to claim a player off waivers and then cut him shortly thereafter. Speculatively speaking, it’s possible Atlanta tried to sign him for 2026 but then non-tendered him when they couldn’t agree on the price point.

For the Halos, it’s a low-cost bet on a bounceback. The salary isn’t much beyond the league minimum, which will be $780K next year. Manoah also still has options, so it’s possible he could be pitching in Triple-A as depth.

Pitching has been a weakness for the club for quite a while and 2025 was no exception. The staff as a whole had a 4.89 ERA this year, putting them ahead of just the Rockies and Nationals. That includes a 4.91 ERA from the rotation, again ahead of just Washington and Colorado. Tyler Anderson became a free agent at season’s end, thinning out the group even more.

Going into 2026, there is very little certainty in the rotation group. Yusei Kikuchi and José Soriano have two spots spoken for. Reid Detmers seems like he’ll get a chance to return to the rotation but he’s a big question mark after struggling in 2024 and then pitching out of the bullpen in 2025. There are a few other guys in the mix, such as Jack Kochanowicz, Caden Dana and Sam Aldegheri, though those guys have fairly mixed track records.

Since the offseason has begun, this is the second time the Angels have bought low on a former big name. A couple of weeks ago, they traded Taylor Ward to the Orioles in order to nab Grayson Rodriguez. It’s a somewhat similar situation to Manoah, as Rodriguez was the 11th overall pick in 2018 but has seen his career thrown off course by injuries. Perhaps the Angels will make more of a surefire rotation addition later in the winter but they have stuck with the less certain guys so far.

It’s hard to know what to expect from Manoah now. It’s been a few years since he was both healthy and effective. He was averaging just 91 miles per hour on his fastball in Triple-A this year. That’s almost three ticks below his 2022 season, when he averaged 93.9 mph. Perhaps being further removed from his surgery will allow him to find a new gear. If not, the Angels won’t have lost much. If it works out, Manoah will finish the 2026 season with less than six years of service, so he could be retained via arbitration for the 2027 season.

At least he is cheap. That’s the kind of signing they should be doing… while they rebuild.

Yep….no permanent damage done. I’ll take it at this point.

Y’know Arte is already pressuring PMGM to sign the soon-to-be 32 y.o. Bregman to a 12 year monster deal.

First the Angels trade away Ward and then they sign the guy that hit Ward in the face.

This move is deja vu all over again. The Angels have a habit of going cheap to fill out the rotation. They added Rodriguez and Manoah, both are cheap and talented, but both have to be labeled as question marks. at this point.

I like this move as a depth move or even security for Rodriguez, but I am not optimistic on him being a reliable starter. I hope the Angels plan to add another starter, but history tells me that this might be it.

Speaking as a Blue Jays fan, he was actually looking pretty good just before the surgery, seemed to have mostly fixed his 2023 problems and his velocity had ticked back up a bit and he had a couple excellent starts. But he’s a guy who’ll never be able to pitch at 91 MPH. Doesn’t have the command for that, and it’s too easy to look slider if he can’t throw a fastball past you.

If Manoah can get rid of his “BIG HEAD”, shut his mouth, and just do what he’s paid to do, he could be excellent… The Jays got very tired of his “calling out the other team”, running his mouth, and then being pulled because of non-performance! He tries to impress with his mouth, when a real leader leads with his performance!!! He can be good, if he’s willing to just zip-it and pitch!!!

Clarification: The Angels have a pitching and hitting lab at their spring training facility in Tempe. mlb.com/news/angels-open-new-player-development-ce…

It uses the same Rapsodo tech that we use at our academy for 10-17 year old players. That is state-of-the-art, but not better than what other teams have.

You kept your streak alive by acquiring someone from Atlanta

I’m so disgusted that you’re so predictable. You should not be running a major league team. You should not be running a team period.

I am sure someone has a bat boy job Avalon. You have experience doing that. The closest you should be to MLB is if you buy a ticket

Waist my time. I am a NCAA division one referee. I have had the honor at the college soccer final four three times. Once on the men’s and twice on the woman’s. I have 7 MLS games as a 4th official and 31 games as a VAR. soccer is the second most difficult sport to officiate outside of ice hockey

If you don’t like soccer and the ties that’s fine you’re entitled to your opinions but face facts. More youths in the United States play soccer than baseball. Soccer is the fastest growing sport in the United States.

You have a right to be an archaic baseball fan. Baseball is suffering a very slow death right now. They are hemorrhaging fans. And when the lockout hits next year, it’ll be the second to last nail in their coffin.

MLB had increases in attendance and viewership numbers in 2025. Little League and High School baseball participation numbers have steadily grown since 2022.

Baseball is not dying. It is growing in every metric including attendance, viewership, and revenue.

MLS attendance was down 8.25% in 2025 to about the same numbers as in 2019. MLS had 3.7 million viewers per week across linear and streaming for the entire league in 2025 or about the same as a typical week for the Yankees. The US is not Europe or Latin America.

According to the Wall Street Journal there were more Ohtani jerseys sold in the US than jerseys for any other player in any sport. Aaron Judge was #2. Luka Doncic was #3. Curry was #4. Saquan Barkley was #6.

Ohtani was not the only Dodger with a high selling jersey. Freeman (#5), Betts (#7), and Kershaw (#20) were in the top 20 in jersey sales in the US as well.

Only one soccer player was in the top 10 in the US. Lionel Messi at #9. There were 3 Dodgers ahead of him. Mbappe was the #2 soccer player in jersey sales in the US and he came in at #27. He plays for Real Madrid. Caitlin Clark of the WNBA came in just in front of him.

An Authentic Dodger (or any MLB team) jersey is $399.99
An Authentic Real Madrid jersey is $190.00

A replica Dodger (or any MLB team) jersey is $134.99
A replica Real Madrid jersey is $79.99

I understand your love of soccer. I am a season ticket holder for the USL Championship club in the city where I live so I love the sport too. USL is like AAA for baseball. As a soccer fan, your reticular activating system is naturally going to register more soccer kits than baseball jerseys.

Outside of the US, soccer is an extremely popular sport but please do not try to say things that are simply not true. The facts are easy to find.

Soccer is a distant 4th place to football, baseball, and hockey in the US. as of 2025.

Just to follow up on my earlier post
2.6 million kids participated in Little League in the US
2.5 million kids participated in youth soccer in the US
The soccer numbers are from the US Soccer Federation

In the US more people watched the Super Bowl in February (127.7 million) than watched all the MLS matches this year. That is just one football game.

In the US and Canada, more people watched the MLB World Series (238 million) than watched every MLS match including the playoffs and championship this year (125.8 million). That is just 7 games.

In the US as many people watched the Yankees in a week as watched all the matches in the MLS combined.

          Apples to Apples my friend.

Someday soccer may be as popular in the US but right now its a distant 4th.

“Soccer is the second most difficult sport to officiate outside of ice hockey.

I don’t see how soccer is more difficult to officiate than football, which is a much more physical game, basketball, which has a much faster pace, or baseball, which has an extensive rule book that demands extensive knowledge and experience to follow completely.

I think soccer would be hard to officiate on the physical level because there is so much goddamned running around. I bet you have to train your behind off and be a strict dieter in order to have the stamina to run that much and stay in top form for an entire season. That would be grueling. Mad respect.

Soccer flows more than the set pieces in American football and is a larger field added to more flow-similar to hockey. Yes, there are set moments/stoppages/pieces but can you imagine how many flags should get thrown during a 45 second NFL play?
Same amount of players more spread apart. As in every sport, you could call multiple fouls nearly every few seconds.

For the simple fact that I am a huge angels fan and disgusted with what this joke of a front office is doing. They are all morons. Why can we not hire a “baseball person” with actual experience in running a MLB team. Hire a manager that is competent. Actually spend money on the farm system and make smart free agent decisions.

This is a typical Angels move

I love watching the Women’s Soccer team ever since Mia Hamm came and taught them how to play the game right. It can be fun when it’s played right and a colossal bore when it’s not. The women know how to pass , When to shoot and how to plan. The men are a hot mess. I’ll be watching the World Cup women’s team. That’s it.

The men’s game is great at the international level but outside of England sucks on the club level

My favorite player for years even when they had all the stars who took top billing has been Rose Lavelle. Her left foot was dangerous. Then she got her knee injured and lost a little but she’s starting to get it back a little at a time. Was glad she got the game winning goal in the NWSL Championship game and hope she’s healthy for the Cup next year. Naeher could be a big loss though but I’ll be watching. If they’re all healthy they have a shot.

When he was on and healthy, Manoah was better than Rodriguez has ever been. Both missed all of 2025 in the majors. All Manoah cost was a little bit of money. Rodriguez cost the Angels their only consistently above average OFer now that Trout will never again be a full time OFer.

The Angels aren’t contending against the Ms and Astros in 2026. Signing an expensive long term contract with a guy like Gallen doesn’t make sense now. Manoah is perfect, if things don’t go well, they’ll cut him. If things go well, he’ll eat up 150 innings and they’ll tender him a contract for 2027. If things go really well — he was a 6.0 bWAR pitcher in 2022, is still only 27 and is now over a full year away from TJ surgery — they can trade him at the deadline, either for long term value or as a means for offloading the rest of the Soler contract. With everything coming off the books (other than Trout and one year of Kikuchi) after 2026, that’s the time to sign a long term deal with a front line starter. Tarik Skubal? Others currently set to be available: Shane Bieber, Brandon Woodruff, Freddy Peralta, Trevor Rogers, Jesus Lúzardo, Shota Imanaga, Matt Boyd, Brady Singer, Robbie Ray and Patrick Sandoval (considering that the Red Sox paid $18 million for the second year of Sandoval after TJ, and Sandoval’s best season isn’t as good as Manoah’s second best season, less than $2 million for Manoah seems a bargain).

Exactly what teams like the Angels should be doing – playing high volatility players. If everything breaks right, that’s their path to the postseason. If everything doesn’t, maybe a few do and they have a player that they can trade or a player for the future

But I guess two million to the pitching starved Angels, sure, why not? The big guy looked good once upon a time, would love to see a bounce back.

Keller is way overvalued by Pitt. Lots of reports at deadline they wanted a return more inline with a top rotation arm, which he isn’t and his contract isn’t exactly cheap for a 3rd/4th starter on a good team.

ALL teams do this – take a chance on catching lightning in a bottle.

The Jays made a deadline deal for a pitcher who hadn’t pitched in the majors for almost two years. He helped them win a pennant.

The Dodgers signed a 3B who had been released by the A’s, and the guy proceeds to hit over 200 HR’s for them.

The Brewers got a guy from the Red Sox who was cut in spring training, and he proceeded to win 13 games for them this year.

      Etc etc etc etc

Yeah 2 million is just a drop in the bucket. We got two back end pitchers for what 3.5. Im saying Rodriguez because he’s probably going to have a pitch count, and innings restriction. Morton, cobb, and buehler were 15+ for bad results. Another thing is manoah has two options left. I see it as the maddux effect probably can get some low risk high upside players willing to take cheap deals to build their stock up.

As a 24 year old he had a 6 bwar season, 196 innings of 2.24 era ball in a tough division.

It went off the rails since then but hopefully he’s healthy, this could end up being a great move

Fastball velo was down 2 MPH from 2024-2025. His FB was never his strength, but going from 93 down to 91 is a significant issue.

Perhaps because of that, he has since changed into a FB/CH pitcher, so he’s not even really the same pitcher as before. He’s basically ditched the 4-seamer in exchange for throwing his change 25% of the time. It worked in the minors, but he’ll have a more difficult time in the majors with that mix.

For $2M, I guess he’s worth a shot. But unless he gets back to 2024 velo levels, it’s going to be difficult for him to stick.

As long as Moreno owns this team, our pitching staff will be made up of one year deals for bounce-back hopefuls that never pan out and AAA quality arms. The result: 11 years from a playoff game and 10 years of sub .500 seasons.

          Sell the Team, Arte

Arte Moreno bought the Angels in 2003. Since then? One playoff win. Two decades of wasted stars. And now, fans can’t even watch games on cable—just FanDuel streams and blackout zones.
This used to be a proud franchise. The Big A had energy. Now it’s off the grid. No plan. No vision. Just more patchwork and PR spin.

Moreno had his shot. He blew it. Anaheim deserves better.

Arte Time to go. Let someone have a chance.

Baseball along with other sports is entertainment. Entertainment is not to be taken seriously. I could have not slid, and scored the winning run for Toronto in game 7. It’s pretty obvious that you can’t count on fairness. If you treat it lightly, you will be less emotional. You will be un dis appointed by events that are scripted. In 7 games the house always wins. Divine intervention up to a point. Yes, angels in the outfield, along with boogers.

I don’t see this moving the needle. I am fine with it too. This should send a clear message to the hopeful. There won’t be a playoff run in 2026. We don’t have a reliable, solid pitching staff and it isn’t going to come together this year. So just fill the gaps with cheap hopefuls. Maybe in 27 we will see someone quality arms come up and we can supplement them with a #1.

Not the Move I Was Hoping For
I had a bad feeling the Angels would patchwork this roster with castoffs this spring latest signing confirms it. Alec Manoah might have upside, but this one stings for more than just baseball reasons.

Let’s not forget: Manoah’s control issues aren’t just numbers on a stat sheet. His wild fastball in July 2023 shattered Taylor Ward’s face and ended his season. That wasn’t just a blip—it was a brutal moment that required surgery and derailed a promising year for Ward.

Yes, Manoah has plus stuff when he’s in the zone. That’s why he was a first-rounder out of West Virginia and why he looked like a rising ace in 2021 and 2022. But the walk rate, the wildness, the regression it’s all real. And now he’s in our clubhouse.
I’m disappointed. Not just in the signing, but in the message it sends. This doesn’t feel like a team building toward something. It feels like a team plugging holes and hoping for the best.

    Another Punch in the Gut
This signing? Feels like The song remains the same and no, it’s not Led Zeppelin on stage. It’s Perry Minasian and Arte Moreno making another Mickey Mouse move while the franchise drifts further into another episode of the twilight zone

The Big A used to be a destination. Now it’s a punchline. And the saddest part? The “Happiest Place on Earth” is just down the street, while Angels fans are stuck in a theme park of disappointment.

How many more of these moves do we have to stomach before someone finally changes the channel?

Arte Moreno shopping in the clearance aisle again?

Look at the last 10 years what top free agent wants to play here?
Players want to play in September, not pack up in July.
They want a shot at a ring, not a rebuild every spring.

if Arte had a brain, Shohei Ohtani would’ve been locked up Years ago.
Instead, we watched him walk. And what did we get in return nothing No prospects in return.?

With the price of even average pitching today, this is one of those if he makes even 9 or 10 starts at a 4.50 ERA its worth the money and if he completely p**ps the bed its not going to cost them much. Until the Angels do a tear down and complete rebuild from the ground up this is the kind of deal they have to keep on doing. I don’t believe that rebuild will happen while Moreno is the owner.

Arte doesn’t care what I think. But he sure cared when the fans booed him last year.
They ran that big outfield video montage—every player got cheers. Then Arte’s face popped up. BOOOOO.
Next game? Poof. He’s gone from the video. Like he never existed

What about the chanting SELL THE THE SELL THEM

Funny how fast he can disappear from a video, but not from the owner’s box.
You ever see Arte Moreno out front? Talking to reporters? Giving interviews?
          Nah. He’s a ghost.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers just won back-to-back World Series.
You don’t think Arte’s pulling his hair out watching Friedman build a juggernaut across town? WATCHING SHOHEI OHTANI.
You don’t think he sees the parade routes and wonders what could’ve been if he’d just gotten out of the way?

The Rays just signed Cedric Mullins to a one-year deal.
30 years old. 19 homers. 52 RBI’sLegit center fielder. You’re telling me the Angels couldn’t match that? One year?

Classic Angels. Either they’ve got a bigger fish to fry (doubtful), or Mullins took one look at Anaheim and said “nah, I have a better chance with the Rays

This is the kind of move competent front offices make. The kind that adds depth, speed, defense, and a little pop without breaking the bank. Meanwhile, we’re out here kicking the tires on every washed-up reclamation project

My guess is if the Angels had signed Mullins to the same contract you would have said they should have gone after Bellinger (or fill in the blank).

For the record I am please with how this off season has gone SO FAR, for the Angels. They aren’t going to fill out the roster in 2 weeks, in baseball it is a process. That process takes several months.

No way in hell the Angels were ever signing Cody Bellinger.

Cedric Mullins at $7M? That’s more their speed—and even that felt like a stretch.

The front office isn’t playing chess or checkers. They’re playing coupon day at Big 5 while other teams are out here flipping undervalued assets

Bellinger was a fantasy. Mullins was the budget reality. And the Angels still missed.
