Mets, Padres, Phillies, Yankees Among Teams Interested In Brenton Doyle

By Mark Polishuk | December 10, 2025 at 12:48pm CDT

Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle is garnering “widespread trade interest,” according to Ari Alexander of 7News Boston.  The Padres, Phillies, Yankees, and Mets are just some of the “many” teams who have checked in with the Rox about the two-time Gold Glover.

Doyle won the NL center field Gold Glove in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons, and he won a Fielding Bible Award as well in 2024.  However, his stellar defense took a step backwards in 2025, as per such public defensive metrics like Defensive Runs Saved and Outs Above Average.  After recording 14 OAA each in both 2023 and 2024, Doyle had “only” six OAA in 2025, though naturally this is still very strong.  The DRS dropoff was more severe, as Doyle went from +29 DRS over the 2023-24 seasons to an even 0 total last year.

The focus on Doyle’s defense is necessary since he has yet to show that he contribute as a big league hitter.  He had only a 44 wRC+ over 431 plate appearances in his 2023 rookie season, but boosted that wRC+ up to 97 in 2024 by hitting .260/.317/.446 with 23 home runs and 30 stolen bases over 603 plate appearances.  This improved offense and Doyle’s superb defense combined for a 3.6 fWAR season, making him an immensely valuable player if he could generate anything close to league-average production at the plate.

Unfortunately, Doyle badly regressed to a 65 wRC+ in 2025, hitting only .233/.274/.376 over 538 PA.  Between this lack of offense and his diminished defense, Doyle barely topped replacement-level production in posting 0.4 fWAR.  It is very possible and understandable that Doyle’s mind was on matters far more important than baseball last year, as the outfielder and wife lost their unborn child in April, 12 weeks into the pregnancy.

Doyle’s 2025 numbers apparently haven’t had much impact on his trade value, which isn’t that surprising for a few reasons.  The 27-year-old is a Super Two player who is controlled through the 2029 season, and Doyle is projected for a $3.2MM salary in his first trip through the arbitration process this winter.  At worst, Doyle is still an excellent defender and a strong baserunner, with 70 steals in 82 attempts during his big league career.  Though Doyle strikes out a lot and doesn’t walk much, he makes a lot of solid contact and has some pop in his bat, and could break out in a more normalized offensive environment than Coors Field.

This potential for offensive improvement could appeal to the Mets, who already have a glove-first player in Tyrone Taylor as their top option in center field.  The Phillies plan to give top prospect Justin Crawford a look in their big league outfield this year, though since it isn’t known if Crawford will be a center fielder over the long term, installing Doyle would allow Crawford to take on a less pressurized role in the corner outfield.

The Yankees and Padres have more crowded outfield pictures.  With Trent Grisham accepting the qualifying offer, New York’s starting outfield is ostensibly set between Grisham, Aaron Judge, and Jasson Dominguez, plus the club is still interested in re-signing Cody Bellinger.  Doyle might be viewed as a fallback plan if Bellinger signs elsewhere, and Doyle’s presence would both provide some guard if Dominguez still isn’t fully ready for the Show, or if Grisham’s sharp defensive decline from 2025 carries over into next year.  Doyle is a right-handed hitter, so he could split time with the lefty-swinging Grisham in center field.

San Diego has Jackson Merrill in center field, flanked in the corners by Fernando Tatis Jr. and (after his club option was exercised) Ramon Laureano.  Merrill is coming off an injury-marred 2025 season but he was still productive at the plate, and though defensive metrics are split on his work in center field, he has done an overall solid job considering that he learned center field on the fly prior to making his MLB debut in 2024.  Tatis and Merrill are locked up over the long term, so Doyle could be a fourth outfielder in 2026, and the Padres could re-evaluate the situation once Laureano’s contract is up next winter.  The fact that the Padres and Rockies are division rivals might complicate any trade, however.

In regards to the Rox, it remains to be seen if the team will even trade Doyle at all, since they’d be selling low on a player who might well be in line for a rebound year.  Trade interest in Doyle has stretched back to at least last summer’s trade deadline, and there is a sense that Colorado might move an outfielder since the outfield is one of the few relative positions of depth on the roster.  New president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta is open to basically anything as he tries to turn around a 119-loss team, so if another team makes a big enough offer for Doyle, DePodesta could very well consider swinging a trade now in order bring some much-needed young talent into the organization.

Doyle is definitely of interest. Lots of talent, but unfortunately had to deal with some deep personal family issues last season. No doubt affected him. He’d a worthwhile trade add for anyone imo especially if there’s any discount.

Bro get off of Cashman’s a$$. A couple of years of trying to spend more wisely while using the farm to graduate or trade for mlb help isn’t a bad thing. They still outspend every other team aside for the Dodgers and Mets although they are more aggressive with pitchers on long term deals than the Mets. That being said, I don’t get the interest in Doyle. He ISN’T that good of a player. He has a career OPS in the .500s away from Coors and it was even lower, in the .400s, last year. And he can’t hit RHP so why allocate any serious assets to get him or take at bats away from Dominguez who you SHOULD be exposed to both sides so he can work thru his struggles. I hope the Yanks aren’t too interested in this guy.

Don’t bother, this dude’s a troll if he thinks that. His comment both show how much he’s followed what the Yanks have done, they’ve spent plenty, and knows nothing of this kid’s pedigree. Again if this has Yanks written all over it, bring it on.

“They’ve spent plenty” firstly I never said they didn’t lmao. They miss the FA that matter and sign or trade and sign papers because thats a thing, for 2nd rate talent. Its literally their modern playbook. But im the one that doesnt follow the Yankees lmao

What major FA of me did they “pass” on vs the player “choose” to sign elsewhere? Clearly, Soto, Ohtani, Yamamoto and Susuki all wanted to go elsewhere. I would argue that passing on Brgman was more from how it would age and less about money. Bringing in Beli was still a $25 mil plus luxury tax hit.

Almost all his high spendatures are awful. The dude hasn’t won anything except 09. Theres nothing to defend hes a terrible GM. Get a clue

Ummm..Judge, Gil, Rice, Wells, Volpe, Dominguez, Schlittler, Schmidt, Warren, Holmes, etc were all from the farm. Jazz, Devin Williams and McMahon were all acquired using prospects. Elmer Rodriguez, their top pitching prospect was acquired trading from a surplus of C prospects. So yeah, he’s used the farm currency well.

Where is this overhype you speak of anyway? I always hear this BS from fans and not actually anywhere. As Knicks said, he’s used his prospects wisely and other GMs have bought them handily. Heck he netted Soto with them! I mean please stop, I’m embarrassed for you so many times over here.

I’m ok with Bryce as a 4th but I don’t think he is offering anywhere near the 97 WRC over a season. If Bryce (who always seemed to get 1 hit late in season) had 600 PAs I’d hate to think what his stats would be!

I could see grabbing Doyle and then Trading Ramon – I don’t like ot but Ramon only has 1 year and can get back more than you would give up for Doyle. Acquiring pieces to get other pieces is AJ’s game.

But looking for value that could be very good is a game the Yankees play too often with their financial resources. They shouldn’t be trying to fix a Rockies outfielder when all they need to do is spend money to get the version they’re hoping Doyle turns into.

The fact that you take a sitcoms rumor as fact is mind blowing. The fact that you would see Boyle as the “answer” for Beli’s replacement or fall back on Tucker is even more baffling. I truly don’t get why fans think Cashman had turned into Billy Bean. Because they aren’t handing out a billion in deferred contracts? One of the reasons why the Dodgers and Mets are making us jealous is because they have Ohtani, Yamamoto and Sasaki and Soto, all guys who I think choose to go elsewhere and their choices didn’t come down to the Yanks not bring willing to offer the most money. You can argue they list out on Snell but I would retort that he was too much of an injury risk. They still have several contracts among the most expensive in Judge, Cole, Fried and likely Rondon. Give him credit for using the farm wisely by graduating good players and trading for good players.

And let’s be honest, if Devin Williams had preformed like he’s done his entire career and resigned with the Yanks because they wanted him back we would all give Cashman. the thumbs up for trading of Cortez and Durbin to acquire a dominant closer.

I’m sure, at the absolute minimum, they’ve factored in his home/away splits.

FWIW it’s difficult for players to recognize pitches on the road where the ball movement in all of the other 29 parks is very different to the ball movement at Coors where they play 81 games.

The Rockies->Yankees pipeline is well-established. Doyle would certainly be an every day RH bat. You’d have to move Grisham to LF to accommodate him. The main question is whether the real version of him is 2024 or 2025?

If he can be a league average hitter with pop, elite defense, and put up 4 WAR then the Yankees are looking at a great addition.

He would be a cheap CF option with wheels and a pretty good hit tool. How is that 40% SO rate for McMahon working out so far?

Unless the Rox get absolutely bowled over with an offer, they should keep Doyle. He is the best defensive outfielder in the history of the franchise, And he is very exciting to watch. Plus, he hit the game winning homer in the 17-16 comeback win against the Pirates that was the best game I watched all season. Truthfully, the Rockies should be looking to extend Doyle instead of trade him.

Trade Veen while he still has some prospect luster. Although it would have been better to rewind a couple of years and trade him. But at least you can still salvage something from him instead of waiting two years and non-tendering him for nothing like with David Dahl.

That was the Rockies, not the Broncos?

Yep. One of those old fashioned Coors Field scoring fests that have become very rare in recent years. Rockies went down 9-0 in the top of the 1st inning and scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th to take the win.

I kinda like Doyle. Weak bat but elite defense and was dealing with a lot last season. Bat did improve and if he’s an average hitter it’s a bargain.

If he comes fairly cheap, it’s worth considering a trade but not if the Rockies are asking for a top 100 prospect. He is not an impact bat. He strikes out too much (25.7% K, 17th percentile whiff rate) and doesn’t walk (5.6%).

Career .572 OPS away from Coors and a stunning .460 in 2025. I’d stay away.

With a whole new FO in place in Colorado, I guess we have to be patient and trust their decisions. Like hiflew mentioned he is the best defensive OF the Rockies have had. He reads the ball so well off the bat and covers ground like no other. Back to back Gold Gloves and 2025 just a horrible year for him to deal with and concentrate on baseball. Really hope they hold onto him, but it’s a total rebuild so we’ll see.

His away splits are so bad that I would almost platoon him with someone else just for away games. Phillies should not must not give up any prospects for this guy. He’ll probably head well below the Mendoza at citizens bank park.

It blows me away that the Phillies won’t just re-sign Harrison Bader. So now they are looking for Harrison Bader Junior. Yet they already have Harrison Baker Junior in Johan Rojas. Yes I know that Bader will cost this 7 billion $$ ownership to shell out an additional 10 million. Over the last four years it shows me that John Middleton is the biggest fraud in Philadelphia.

Bader is so unlikely to reproduce his 2 months with the Phillies. I’d let someone else overpay him.

        Bader:

        MINN: 2.7 rWAR
        PHI: 1.3 rWAR

He was just as good in Minnesota as he was in Philly.

If he drops all the way to 1.0 rWAR in 2026 he’d still be worth $8-10m.

But, boy, his Statcast page for hitting is almost all blue. A multiyear deal isn’t promising for the acquiring team. His Hard Hit rate and Bat Speed held up and he was actually faster in 2025 vs 2024, so a few things are moving in the right direction.

If there’s one place you need great defensive outfielders, it’s at Coors. They should keep Doyle.

Do the Padres need a 4th OF? Merrill is much better than Doyle and I haven’t heard anything about him being on the trade docket.

Not really, Johnson did a fine job as the 4th outfielder. Can play all three spots, is a good defender withe speed. Plus hit better than Doyle.

@outinleftfield. Probably not, Their 3 starters are set (but all have shown injury histories). Sheets is in the mix and Johnson is a fine #4/5. Then there’s the potential they can play Eguy Rosario and or Tirso Ornelas.

Doyle? The Padres rumors so far this off season don’t make a ton of sense to me.

        Brew-

This is no different the last year.

They need to trade cronenworth rumors

        They need to trade Tatis

They need to trade Cease (this year it’s Pivetta)

Payroll requires it. It’s an easy narrative to put out there and quite frankly believe. Heck I even find myself at times buying into them. Preller cast a wide net, talks a million possibilities. If someone bites on a deal he likes he will do it.

I think this is gonna be a long offseason for the Padres. Doesn’t mean they aren’t gonna do anything, just means they are gonna need to be patient.

“Though Doyle strikes out a lot and doesn’t walk much, he makes a lot of”… sense for the Phillies to be interested in him.

“The focus on Doyle’s defense is necessary since he has yet to show that he contribute as a big league hitter. ”

—-Right, because hitting at league average by OPS+, in 600 PA in 2024, which accounts for parks, is “has yet to.”

Come on, site. Shape up. Every article? Really?

The Phillies don’t need another sub .300 OBP outfielder whose limited power numbers are distorted by playing in Coors Field.

A guy that can’t hit playing half his games at the most hitter friendly field in baseball kinda isn’t a good sign when it comes to any potential to ramp up (or ramp back up) if traded to a team with a less hitter friendly home field. I’d call an audible and pass.
