Red Sox Interested In Kyle Teel

By Mark Polishuk | December 10, 2025 at 11:43am CDT

Carlos Narvaez had a solid rookie season and emerged as Boston’s top option behind the plate in 2025.  However, the Red Sox have been linked to J.T. Realmuto’s market, so there is some indication that the Sox aren’t entirely set at the catching position.  Along those same lines, MassLive.com’s Sean McAdam reports that the club has shown some interest in reuniting with ex-Boston prospect Kyle Teel, though “nothing is close now” between the Red Sox and White Sox.  McAdam adds that the BoSox had talks with the ChiSox about Teel both this offseason and last summer.

It was almost exactly a year ago to the day that Boston included Teel as part of a four-prospect package in the blockbuster trade that brought Garrett Crochet to Fenway Park.  A consensus top-60 prospect heading into the 2025 season, Teel made his Major League debut this year and had a strong initial showing, hitting .273/.375/.411 with eight home runs over his first 297 plate appearances in the Show.

Normally there wouldn’t be even a slight chance that the White Sox would consider flipping such a potential building block, except Edgar Quero is also on the roster as another possible “catcher of the future.”  This has led to teams inquiring on both Teel and Quero’s availability, just in case the South Siders were willing to deal from this on-paper surplus, or had already decided on which of Teel or Quero was their preferred choice going forward.

McAdam writes that “the White Sox are seen as more likely to deal Quero than Teel.”  This could be due to Quero’s shaky defense, as many scouts feel Quero won’t be able to stick at catcher while Teel’s glovework is seen as at least average.  Of course, there is no rush for Chicago to move either Quero or Teel any time soon, with both players so early in their development as big leaguers.

Re-acquiring Teel would be a somewhat unusual move on Boston’s part, and might indicate some trader’s remorse.  Obviously the Red Sox weren’t going to land Crochet without including at least one blue-chip prospect, and Teel ended up being the odd man out of the group known as Boston’s “big four” prospects at the time (Teel, Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer).  In a sign of how quickly things can change on the catching front, at this time last year the Red Sox thought they had Connor Wong lined up as a reliable everyday catcher, yet the 2025 season saw Wong struggle badly and Narvaez step up as a starter.

The Red Sox have enough young pitching depth that they could potentially drum up an offer intriguing enough to get the White Sox to move Teel, even if that scenario is certainly on the unlikely side.  Many expect Realmuto to ultimately re-sign with the Phillies, which could leave Boston looking for more catching help.  Narvaez’s health is a slight question mark since he underwent a minor knee surgery following the season, but he is expected to be set for the start of Spring Training.

The devers deal was worth it. Not a leader and an attitude issue. Couldn’t be happier with him being gone. Obviously they got nothing back for him. But Don’t hate him being gone.

I agree with you Tippy. Trading Devers was very smart. And, will be one of Posey’s worst moves as Giant’s PBO.

The $220M owed to Devers can be used so much better. $31M for an aging DH with an attitude problem. No thank you.

Yep. The White Sox have no reason to trade Kyle Teel unless they can get a stud at an organizational position of need which is in their outfield. They’re primed to pick “generational” shortstop Roch Cholowsky with the #1 pick in the 2026 Draft. He will just add to their already immense depth at the position which likely means moving current SS Colson Montgomery to 3B, shifting others like Billy Carlson or Caleb Bonemar to 2B or the OF, or just using the excess in future trades.

If the Red Sox want Teel back that badly it will take Roman Anthony to centerpiece such a trade. The Red Sox infield prospect depth won’t be enough to sway Chris Getz into moving Teel. Anthony can then join former top Red Sox OF prospect Braden Montgomery on the Guaranteed Rate grass as soon as 2026.

        1) White Sox already have their Catcher of the future in Quero and are known to be shopping Teel. So they do have a reason to trade him.
        2) The article says the Red Sox “have shown interest”. Where did you hear “Red Sox want Teel back that badly”?
        3) Teel is a bat first catcher and may be heading to 1B, which would lower his value.

          @ Reggie Smith:

It’s blatantly false to suggest that the Chris Getz is “shopping Teel”. That is fan base wishful thinking, likely being generated by Red Sox bloggers.

Most knowledgeable fans have Kyle Teel as the White Sox primary core catcher with Edgar Quero as his short side platoon option. Both can be everyday lineup options in 2026 with their use of the DH and true backup Korey Lee also on the 26-man roster. Down the road I can envision a trade or anticipate one of these two starting catchers to occupy another position like 1B if their bats will play there.

I’m also not expecting the Red Sox to deal Roman Anthony anytime soon, even for a needed catcher. It was just my way way of reinforcing the original thread comment.

Interesting the White Sox organization may disagree with the decision for catcher of the future. They are actually higher on Teel than Quero and even though they aren’t open to trading either right now, Quero would be more likely if they did. But you obviously know more than the White Sox about what the White like and want to do.

Aaron, it’s always foolish to take a “this one guy or no dice” stance in trade talks. I still remember the Twins foolishly doing that with Ellsbury or Buchholz in return for one year of control of Johan Santana (at a time when both young guys had proven enough to not even really be prospects anymore and thus not touchable). They ended up having to take a mediocre package from the Mets after passing on some very nice Boston offers; they had the Yankees and Red Sox in a bidding war but managed to get both to drop out by refusing to budge from specific names.

One should never feel forced to drop an overall asking price, but if it isn’t happening with a specific prospect don’t overlook other names.

          @Longinus:

It’s an “apples and oranges” comp considering that there is no front line rental involved in any of the “silly” trade proposals being made here on a questionable rumor to begin with.

It’s safer to say that the White Sox aren’t trading either of their two young catchers without being absolutely overwhelmed with an offer, especially in regards to Kyle Teel. It’s also safe to assume that Roman Anthony will not be traded any time soon either.

Each of these young players have All-Star ceilings. Anthony is clearly the best among them and a potential generational middle of the order corner OF bat going forward. That said Teel and Quero each play the prime defensive position of catcher and offer plus bats as potential future All-Star backstops.

And neither is Teel was the point behind someone bringing up a Roman Anthony return. It’s mindless thinking to even suggest the White Sox entertain trading Teel right now. If they would even entertain the thought it’s going to take a great overpay at someone’s expense, hence the Roman Anthony suggestion.

Casas for teel? Yea right. For Teel +, you must be high lol. If the white sox wanted him instead of teel, the Red Sox would have jumped on it last year. Casas value is not all that high. Hes coming off a down year and is a first base only player without a ton of power. Not to mention he is closer to arbitration than teel is by 2 years. So yea, less control of a lesser caliber player makes perfect sense. You can have Korey Lee for Casas

Man, I remember when they traded Teel in the Crochet trade and I said “wow, that’s an overpay because they have literally no catching depth. They should have gotten the deal done without including him. The White Sox have a good c prospect already, so a deal could be made without Teel!”

This is the most annoying off-season. Trade away power bat for nothing. They need a power bat! Trade away a top catching prospect with no depth in the minors. They might trade for him back!

It’s like Breslow doesn’t think ahead.

The Red Sox should have held onto their “Big Three” in Anthony, Mayer and Teel. The first two are obvious, and Teel should have been held onto because they had literally no catching prospects outside of him. They had the prospect capital to get it done without including Teel.

However this isn’t some dumb dumb fantasy league that you’re going to pick on the slow boy who is clueless in the league. In real life there is no chance the White Sox give away a SP like him with control for scraps. Also you need 2 Catchers in baseball and one can play DH/1b in a rotation so they aren’t saying nooooo we can’t have 2 good ones!

Are we forgetting that Campbell leapfrogged Teel in every? MLB pipeline had Campbell at 7 and Teel at 32 to start the season. That’s a pretty big gap. Not saying that this is the definitive end all be all perfect ranking, but this was the consensus. Campbell was a fast rising prospect.

A deal could have easily been made without including Anthony, Mayer or Teel.

Narvaez was supposed to be some defense first catcher with little hit tool. I believe people thought the Red Sox would try to add another catcher to go with Narvaez. He did really well last season though, hopefully he can build on it.

You have no way of knowing how the White Sox viewed the Red Sox prospects and how they valued them. They may have insisted that Teel be included in the deal.

Joemo – thank you! I’ve been saying it a different way for the past two years, but no he doesnt think ahead.
What I’ve been saying is he looks at every signing, trade, acquisition as a stand alone piece. I say he “silo’s” all his moves, as if everything you do doesnt affect another piece.
The 26 Man and 40 Man is like a living breathing entity that needs all of the pieces functioning together to make one healthy unit.
Everything he does is in a solo. Already have a 3B, bring in another one, no worries. No catching depth, trade away top prospect.
There’s a phrase that goes, “death by a thousand points of data” which induces a analysis paralysis, wherein you lose the original focus.
Honestly, I would never take back the Crochet trade, and, I hope all four of those guys turn into good players for the White Sox. You have to give something to get something, even in a debatable overpays.
If the Red Sox dont build on obtaiming Crochet thats not Chicago’s fault.
Moreover, the quantity of these rumors is demeaning. If they’re leaks then tighten up the ship. If youre feeding this out, knock it off, and act like an adult and not a teenager bragging on Tik Tok about how many suitors you have.
      Ridiculous

Sad – Tunnel Vision is very common for people like Breslow, including lack of foresight and planning.

Case in point, the first base fiasco this year. You would have thought the Red Sox would have had Raffy learn first base long before Bregman arrived … but no, instead Breslow told Raffy to burn his glove because he would never play in the field again. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

        Do your job, Bres!

As the article mentions, the presence of Quero is the only reason Bres could even call them about this without getting laughed at and hung up on.

Am curious what it would take to get Teel back, but I’m sure the price will be unpalatable enough as to not be worth it.

Best case scenario, the Sox get serious about building a contender and we get a World Series during this competitive window. Then the trade will essentially be the 2024 version of Beckett and Lowell for Hanley Ramirez.

Imo Teel is the better bet of the two to stick at catcher but the chi Sox should hold both of them and see who emerges this coming season.

That’s fair and may also be how CWS is thinking too. But the fact of the matter is it looks like they have two legit catchers on their hands so anyone in need at the position wouldn’t be doing their job if they weren’t checking in at least to feel it out.

With Teel’s value much higher now, can’t wait to see what the Sox offer for him. Joon was right, the Red Sox front office is a mess. Lets hope at least Crochet can stay healthy.

Fever—two reasons for the F.O. debacle: 1. John 2. Henry. He did what he said he was going to do back in 2002: bring MULTIPLE championships to Boston. But now that he has accomplished this, I believe that he feels that since he appeased the fan base, he no longer feels the need to spend freely. Any GM that he hires will need to be as cheap as he is, and as long as the fannies are in the seats, he’s content.

Fever—In fact, as I’ve said before, Fenway Park is a top tourist destination now. It’s rated #2 on top things to do in Boston on Trip Advisor. The Yankees come in at #6, the Dodgers at #245, and the Cubbies at #167. Fenway Park is the “in” place to be, and Henry knows it.

chance – Yes and Werner knows it too, about a year ago he referred to the “Fenway Experience”. It’s been in quite a few movies, and as Fenway Corners is built around it people will flock there even more. Especially fans of visiting teams, quite often there’s almost as many road team fans as Sox fans at Fenway.

Chris – It’s apples and oranges.

John wanted Dave to drastically reduce payroll and run the team like the Rays and Moneyball, but Dave refused because he knows consistent competitiveness requires talent that usually isn’t cheap.

Doesn’t matter what you call it, fired or not, but fact is Dave’s contract expired and he refused to do what John wanted therefore his contract wasn’t renewed.

Fever—Shall we assume you think the Sox would be better off without Crochet? Your inside knowledge is that they could have done the deal without adding Teal to the package? Just how dumb do you think Breslow—a former mlb pitcher who knows the value of a good catcher—actually is? The payment for Crochet hurt because they had to include Teel and Montgomery. That’s the way it works—painful but in the end worth it.

stel – Breslow is intelligent but that has nothing to do with knowledge or experience. Fact is he took the job with ZERO experience as head of a Baseball Ops, so naturally he’s not gonna be as good as guys like Dombrowski, AA, Friedman, etc. And unlike Theo, there was nobody there to mentor Breslow …. Kennedy is an absolute joke.

Truth is Breslow lost out on all his free agent targets (Snell, Fried, Burnes) and was desperate for an ace so he drastically overpaid for Crochet. Breslow gave all the leverage to the ChiSox, that’s a fact. It doesn’t take insider knowledge to realize they could have traded Mayer or Campbell instead of Teel if Breslow knew how to negotiate.

Was it painful to lose Kopech, Basabe, Moncada and Diaz for 3 years of Sale? Dombrowski knows which players to trade and which ones to keep, Breslow doesn’t.

Do I really need to bring up the Sale/Grissom trade?

I saw Teel for 5 games this year. Great arm but I don’t think he will stay at catcher. He can hit. It is going to cost Early plus. I don’t see the White Sox moving him unless they get a controllable starting pitcher back.

After their immense middle infield depth, the White Sox next organization area of strength is their starting pitching which includes at least two prospects with ace ceilings.

The White Sox SP depth is so deep that I would anticipate their current #1 Shane Smith to be a #4 or #5 by 2027. Assuming good health (big assumption!), I have southpaws Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith passing Smith along with RHP’s Grant Taylor and Drew Thorpe. I currently envision fellow righty Tanner McDougal battling it out with Smith for a spot at the back of the White Sox future rotation.

If any team is interested in prying away a future White Sox starting catcher like Kyle Teel or Edgar Quero they should start those conversations with a stud outfielder, preferably on who can handle CF.

As a lifelong White Sox fan of 59 years, I see any talks of the Sox trading Kyle Teel right now, is uninformed gibberish. Not only is he a top 10 catcher in the league, he may end up being an All Star this coming season.

But if Chris Getz was to entertain an offer from Scott Breslow and the Red Sox, it would have to start with CF Jarren Duran, Triston Casas and maybe throw in LHP prospect Payton Tolle in AAA. Getz could even try to add Luis Robert to the deal, to give Boston a CF to cover for the loss of Duran. Robert is a FA at the end of the season and if they fall out of contention, they could flip him like the White Sox are hoping this season.

You know the Breslow dance around: “well you know we are in talks with everyone and in on trades. We are doing everything we can to improve this roster and young core. We’ve been in on everyone just nothing has been the right fit or deal.”

Which translates to: we are blowing a lot hot air into the atmosphere telling everyone what we are fantasizing about doing for the team however we won’t pull the trigger to actually get it done and improve the team. We will in turn have an excuse for every FA or trade we miss out on.

Breslow has to go, small market minded GM’s do not work for big market teams. When will Boston learn? This experiment with Bloom and now Breslow over the past 6 years is not going well. Look what Bloom is about to do to the Cardinals lol – here comes 90+ losses. You do not need to spend like the Dodgers to win a WS but come on lol
