The Red Sox have had talks with the Rangers about a Corey Seager deal, reports Tim Healey and Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. Seager joins a growing list of Boston trade targets that includes Ketel Marte, Isaac Paredes, and Brendan Donovan. The club has also been connected to free agentsBo Bichette, Pete Alonso, and Eugenio Suarez. WEEI’s Rob Bradford reports there isn’t any momentum regarding Boston’s pursuit of Seager.
While the club has been connected to several players in the trade market, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow admitted some discussions have been slow to progress. “In a lot of the conversations that we’ve had, a number of teams have conveyed that they’re very comfortable holding onto their players, as are we,” Breslow said. “So that does add a little bit of a layer of difficulty to try to make these things work.”
Seager delivered a typical season in 2025, providing stellar offensive production in between IL stints. The 31-year-old notched a 138 wRC+ across 102 games. Seager fell short of 30 home runs for the first time as a Ranger, largely due to missing time with a hamstring strain (twice) and an appendectomy. His 445 plate appearances were his fewest since his final year with the Dodgers in 2021.
Texas landed Seager on a massive 10-year, $325MM deal ahead of the 2022 season. He’s been an integral part of the lineup over the past four seasons and led the team to a World Series win in 2023. Seager finished second in AL MVP voting that year, but still went home with individual hardware after securing World Series MVP honors.
Seager will make $31MM in each of the next six seasons. There have been whispers that Texas would be trimming payroll this offseason. The team already chose to non-tender Adolis García and Jonah Heim instead of paying their arbitration price tags. The Rangers also traded Marcus Semien, who had three years and $72MM remaining on his contract, but the deal brought back Brandon Nimmo, who is slated to make $101.25MM through the 2030 season. The Mets did toss in $5MM as part of the trade.
Texas could use some help in the rotation and the bullpen. Linking up with Boston in a trade could help cheaply patch those holes. Breslow has said the team is willing to deal controllable starting pitching. Boston bolstered the rotation by adding Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo via trade. Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello are locked into rotation spots, which leaves little room for youngsters Payton Tolle, Connelly Early, and Hunter Dobbins. Veterans Patrick Sandoval and Kutter Crawford are also expected to be back healthy.
Trevor Story served as Boston’s primary shortstop last season. After multiple injury-riddled seasons, the former Rockie came through with a resurgent year. Story launched 25 home runs and stole a career-high 31 bases. He remains on the books for $25MM in each of the next two seasons. The contract also includes a $25MM club option for 2028. Story exclusively played second base in his first year in Boston, with Xander Bogaerts holding down shortstop. He could slide back to the keystone if the club acquires Seager, though that would require some reshuffling with Ceddanne Rafaela and potentially others. Center fielder Jarren Duran has been the subject of frequent trade talks, and his departure would clear a spot for Rafaela in the outfield.

Trade rumor
Abreu gone…Then the Rangers sign Bichette after cutting loose from Seager.
Dear 8 pound, 6 ounce baby Jesus. Don’t even know a word yet. I just want to thank you for this post.
I prefer the baby version, when you say grace, you can say whichever you like!
Make sure to be properly thankful for being blessed with Walker and Texas Ranger
Funny stuff. Keeping it light boys!
I like to picture Jesus in a tuxedo t-shirt, ’cause it says, like, ‘I wanna be formal, but I’m here to party, too.’ I like to party, so I like my Jesus to party….
I like to think of Jesus like, with giant eagle’s wings and singin’ lead vocals for Lynyrd Skynyrd with like an Angel Band, and I’m in the front row, and I’m hammered drunk…

“Rivals believe Texas is ‘playing possum’ with payroll concerns”
Last year we went from “we have the ability to sign *ANY* player” to “we have to dump salary”… It’s *SO* frustrating. We were just Shohei Ohtani away from winning the World Series. I know that immediately sounds like a pie in the sky delusion, but replace Kumar Rocker’s 14 starts with Ohtani’s and Joc Pederson with Ohtani and the difference is enough to handily win the division and make a strong push through the playoffs.
Anyways, I felt like we were lied to last year, either way, whether they had money or didn’t/whether they need to cut payroll or not, and it’s frustrating to us fans.
Seager is one of my favorite players. While there isn’t a spot for him on the Dodgers, he would make any team much better. I hope it’s not true, because he moved there to be close to family.
Seager would do well at Fenway too.
Another Dodgers Fan: He moved where and why do you care?
He moved to Texas. He was a fan favorite in LA, but decided he wanted to live closer to his family. No taxes obviously was a bonus as well. It was the best of all worlds for him and no one could fault the logic and call him greedy or whatever.
I care because he was a great player for the Dodgers, and an excellent person. With an excellent family. I root for him to do well, as I do certain other former Dodgers.
Does that explain things well enough?
Another Dodgers Fan: But how would it affect you if he gets traded and moves to New England?
It doesn’t affect me personally, and never said it did.
I basically said I would be bummed for him if he was moved.
you met him? you spent time with him? How would you know if he were an excellent person?
By all accounts, he’s a good guy.
Do I really need to spend time with him in order to say he’s a good guy?
Do I need to meet you or spend time with you to determine you are “that guy”? Nope.
Another Dodgers Fan: But how is it your business if he agrees to it and his family is happy about it?
I have no idea how you can vicariously judge or feel emotions for someone you don’t personally know.
But you do you. 🤷♂️
Alfred, what is wrong with you?
It’s baseball, why be such a tool?
You handled this well. Clearly he’s just looking to pick a fight with someone. He’s probably a virgin.
DogDays2: You are proof positive of the old saying “It takes one to know one.”
That’s what’s wrong with you.
So witty. Go have another drink.
DogDays2: True. I was a virgin several decades ago. I was 17 then.
My bad, I forgot about your fling with your sister.
So you are on a MLB rumors site because you enjoy baseball and want to talk about the moves teams make and the results. You prefer for your team to do well because it’s the one you root for. At least I would assume that’s why you’re here.
But to cheer on the individuals who play on those teams outside of the game is strange to you. And you find it in yourself to say I’m odd for having empathy towards these people who have families and lives.
Ultimately we’re doing similar things. You prefer to cheer on a team than a person. I can do both.
But you do you, as sad as it sounds to me.
Another Dodgers Fan: You’re not wrong, but my question is why can’t you cheer on a favorite player regardless of what team he plays for?
In this case, why are you happier for Seager with Texas than you would be if he goes to Boston? It’s not as if he would be underpaid or exploited in any way.
We would be happy if you constantly moved your family.Kids love to meet new kids in each school.Chase the money.Money is life.
Outside of baseball reasons, he signed with Texas because he was closer to family. There’s something to be said for having friends and family around when you have a homestand. There’s a support system there for them.
Plus, he and his wife have a newborn. So they would have to figure out the best way to handle that if he were in Boston.
It’s nothing hundreds of other players haven’t dealt with before. But I bet 90% of players would want a situation similar to his if the money was equal.
Just a few years ago the Dodgers tried to trade for a pitcher. He turned it down because of his family situation. Totally respect that.
None of this affects me personally.

Troll – just being argumentative
Muted
Also we have no income tax in Texas. California could not compete.
drprofkevin: The tradeoff being, of course, that you have to actually live in Texas. 🤣
And? Tell us more about which you are clueless about
I would take living in TX over CA. I would hate living there. I am sure there are some decent places in CA.
Ranger Danger19: And what are you clueless about in addition to sarcasm?
He’s got you there
Everyone always cites this but players play half of their games away. And the away games are taxed in the state you play it in. So the difference isn’t as much as you think. When Seager (or anyone else) plays games in New York or California, you bet your butt those states are wetting their beaks.
Even half as much as you think is still a lot.
If the Dodgers wanted him, they could always move Mookie back to the outfield or put Seager at second base.
He’s realistically going to end up at third base later in his career. I don’t know the he has the mobility for second base full time.
Muncy is very important to the Dodgers, regardless of the stats song throw around showing they should cut him loose. So there’s isn’t a great fit at this moment in time.
Bichette was in the first percentile for range and despite having an injured knee still managed to play a passable second base in the world series. I’m sure Seager can do even better considering he’s still above average even at short.
With the extra time to make the throw at second base he could play further back than he does at short and give himself an extra step or two to get to the ball. That would likely help offset any range he loses over the next few years.
ADF – I agree Seager will move off of SS within the next couple of seasons. But I think for first base, not third imo.
Green
It’ll depend on team need. His brother was an excellent third baseman, and Corey has the arm and reaction time to excel at third.
It’s harder to get his offensive production out of a third baseman then a first baseman. But who knows?
Seager at SS, move Mookie back to RF, and hide Teo’s glove in LF
After next year Seager can take over for Muncy at 3B or stay at SS
Seager will cost less in years and dollars than Bo Bichette..
I think there is definitely a way this works out if they want to pursue it on both sides
It could work like that. Feels like they will do something surprising, but really it could be anything.
Tyler+ for Skubal?
Pieces for an outfielder?
Would be interesting if it was a story for seate swap with some young players included, it would save Texas some money and add some young talent
Due diligence probably more than anything else.
Sox need a slugger, especially one that can actually stay on the field
“Rebuilding time” would be odd considering their acquisition of Nimmo and the five years, ~$96 million remaining on his deal. I would think a deal like this would be more about selling high on Seager to stock the farm and cutting some salary to potentially spend elsewhere.
“Selling high and stocking the farm=rebuild”
Disagree. Rebuild would be trading away Seager, deGrom, and Eovaldi (and whoever else) and not acquiring a 33 year old OF with declining skills and five years left on his deal. If you think Nimmo is ‘criminally underrated’, then I have to ask if you’ve watched him play.
I’m saying it would be a hybrid approach. You sell high on Seager before he starts declining and get some young talent to build the farm. Then you take the $$ savings from Seager and spend it on MLB talent.
“who’s left?”
Langford? Carter? Whoever you’d get for Seager?
Selling on seager would be extremely smart since he is getting injured and has a ton of years left on his deal
Seager for Yoshida and Duran.
Seager for Yoshida Hicks and Duran.
If your team wants to trim payroll, or get younger, how would this achieve either of those two things?
Seager 6 year those guys 2
I feel like they could do better than that.
But… I thought all the media rumors were that he was going to the Yankees.
I would think Trevor Story would head to Texas to offset some of the salary. It would probably cost Boston a higher value prospect, but it would be a lot better than having both Story and Seager.
I would think Story + Tolle or Early + a low level high ceiling guy like Dorian Soto could work.
Alternately, they could keep Story and move him to second or another club and instead use Yoshida to slightly offset salary and add both Tolle AND Early along with a guy like Soto.
Lots of possibilities when you have the assets and payroll of the Red Sox.
Texas could do Yoshida and Hicks instead of story and try and make Hicks the closer.
Hicks can’t get out of the 6th inning. You want to make him the closer?! Wait… and you want us to throw in Yoshida?! If I were the Red Sox GM and you were running the Rangers, I would be knocking on your hotel door right now to make that deal.
It’s to offset the $$$ but Duran has the most trade value is this team with a 45 million surplus.
I don’t see Tolle & Early being traded. Maybe 1 of them in a deal. No way they trade both this off-season. IMO.
Yeah the only reason I considered both was because Yoshida is a lot less salary than Story and you’d probably have to include something else. Although the guy above suggested tacking Hicks along with Yoshida and that would solve the problem.
This seems rather silly. I don’t understand why the Red Sox would want to take on that contract. Seager will not get any healthier and recall his brother was out of baseball at age 32. Doesn’t make any sense to me, Boston has young players to take this position going forward.
Son – it doesnt make sense. Why do the Red Sox feel they need to continuously leak out this type of drivel. They did this same stupid thing last year. Apparently , they’re the only team that talks to every other team about every player.
Seems sketchy but it is Boston and they got the money to pay out. Guess this could mean they’re out on both Bichette and Bregman..
I think they are marking their territory over every conceivable Big Bat , whether via trade or free agency. And they are hoping by doing so one gets fertilized enough to sprout something fruitful. Also by doing so they spread their scent over everything, hoping to scare away competitors with that acrid scent.
They gave away Sale for a average 2b prospect. All you need to know.
Theoretically they would put a value on Seager and if it’s less than his contract Texas would eat the salary needed.
how does the “retirement” of Kyle Seager mean anything to how long Corey Seager can play?
Kyle played for the sad-sack Seattle Mariners, where he had no chance to ever reach the World Series.
Kyle had offers to play all over the place, he was a free agent. But he wanted to go home to his farm. And that’s kind of a funny way to talk about the Mariners coming from a fan. Kyle loved playing there; he was pretty much our de facto team captain.
The Rangers wanted Kyle for a year to play with his brother, Corey.
I like Seager, but this just feels like a typical Sox infielder trade where we give up a lot and get a recently productive player who then proceeds to go crap the bed while we owe him a ridiculous amount of money.
This is out of the blue. The Red Sox need RH bats. The Red Sox could easily sign Bregman and Alonso and then package Duran or Abreu with Early and another prospect to go get a legit #2 starter. Then fill out the pen with some quality arms and a couple of vets off the bench.
Love Seager, but he’s hurt all the time. If the Red Sox are willing to take on a large contract, I don’t think this is the one……
Corey is a legend here but if they can lose the backend of that deal Chris Young is a genius.
If the Rangers traded Semein to Dave $ and looking to move Seager for the fans reason them why aren’t they putting deGrom on the market since he’s 37 and “only” signed for 3 years? It seems like they are retooling looking beyond 2026 at least? They could easily get a boatload for him in s think market for FOR options. Just about every team would be in on him.
Is Boston not wanting Bregman back? Trading for Seager is extreme. Do they not have faith in Mayer? I’m sure Rangers would take Anthony back
They’re looking to add 1-2 mid-to-high end infield bats. Preferably RH or S.
Latest on Bregman today was that he may take his time like last off-season and Breslow is unlikely to wait. Either way, if they make one move soon-ish, it allows them to wait a bit longer on a 2nd.
They could be holding back until the SP market becomes more settled, maybe. I’d bet the interest would spike if anything comes out of that rumor about Skubal going to the Dodgers.
6/189M for a 32 yr old SS that misses almost 50 games a season OR go sign ZBo Bichette who is 28.
Paging Mike Elias…
Seager is a great player that can’t stay healthy.
That doesn’t magically get better with age. Sox should not make this move.
Duran plays LF
And I would approve of most any trade package to get Seager. Game changer, still in his prime.
Payroll space
Just for shnizits and giggles:
Volpe, Jones and Lombard for Seager and Staton.
meant Maton.
Maton on cubs
Who are the Yankees getting? Oh, I see. Thought this was in regards to the Red Sox.
r. Tatis would look good in Boston. Marte makes most sense for mets, seager and mariners. Mets come up short on prospect s for marte.
You would think that Texas would have to take back story
I relate this to the Eugenio Suarez talk…..their keeping all avenues open.
Plans a,b,c,d,e,etc…
Mayer for Skubal??? I’m not sure what you’re smoking but I want some.
You are the one suggesting a one for one trade of Mayer for Skubal which is nuts and would never happen. The Tigers ask for him from the Mets (as an example) would be three top 100 prospects plus. And Mayer didn’t want to play in Detroit in his draft year (an article said that, not me). Keep adding pieces if you’re thinking Skubal to Boston. It doesn’t matter though because NO ONE will pay what Detroit is asking anyway.
There is zero chance of this. Not surprising for the Red Sox or anyone else asking after Seager. But there’s no story here.
Geez same old story, talk to all available and settle on the cheap!
He seems to get hurt about at the same rate as Mike Trout. I do look at games played before HR and BA.
“I do look at games played before HR and BA.”
Then
1) you’re looking at the wrong measures of production
2) you’re doing it backwards. Look at total production. How many games it comes in doesn’t really matter. Seager is a very productive player
What a great reminder of how many (we can probably say nearly all) free agent deals, despite all the hype when they occur, rarely work out for the teams, which often get rid of the player before the contract is completed.
I’m not sure you read the article- the Rangers aren’t shopping Seager, the Red Sox are asking about his availability. What about Seager’s contract hasn’t worked out for the Rangers?
Anthony and Mayer would be asked for if I was Tigers GM.
Wouldn’t be surprised if the Sox’s demand that the Rangers take back Yoshida or eat a lot of Seager contract
My guess Bello,Yoshida and 2 mid prospects (Yhoiker Fajardo #9 and Miguel Bleis #22) (soxprospects.com)
I doubt the sox would give up any prospect in their top 10 if Bello is part of the trade. Also the Rangers would have to eat a portion of the contract too.
It would cost a lot but this would be a great move for the Red Sox. One of the best ss in the game
It would have to be cheap, or a money offset to make it work. Unlike Marte, Seager is on a market-rate contract.
Throw in Yoshida and hicks you can have a couple of ml starters
Cubs should empty some of the farm for DeGrom n Seager.
Wicks, Shaw, wiggins, Tailon,and Cassie
For
Degrom + Seager +:Cash
The amount of moolah in his deal is crazy.
The Tigers should be all over him vs looking at Bregman.
I like Seager and the fit is decent, and honestly with that contract you could probably get Texas to take back a minimal return.
Seager has been worth every penny of that contract for the rangers. IF they traded him, it wouldn’t be for a minimal return.
The BoSox are going to keep the payroll low and maximize profit. Of course they’re interested in trades, , short term with no lengthy cash involved. sounds like a business to me.
