December 20: Detroit has officially announced the Finnegan deal. He’ll earn $8.75MM in 2026 and $8MM in 2027. The contract also includes a mutual option for 2028 at $10MM, with a $2.25MM buyout. Justyn-Henry Malloy was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Finnegan.
December 9: The Tigers are reportedly bringing back veteran reliever Kyle Finnegan on a two-year, $19MM contract. There are also $1MM in bonuses available for the Warner Sports Management client. Detroit’s 40-man roster is full, meaning they’ll need to make a corresponding move once the contract is finalized.
It’s yet another domino to fall in a quick-moving relief market. Detroit initially acquired Finnegan from the Nationals at the trade deadline. He carried a 4.38 earned run average with a sub-20% strikeout rate at the time. It frankly seemed underwhelming for the team’s biggest bullpen pickup. The Tigers correctly identified Finnegan as a player who had another level of upside with a change to his pitch mix, however.
In Washington, Finnegan had thrown his fastball around two-thirds of the time. He used his splitter at a roughly 30% clip and sporadically mixed in a slider. The Tigers encouraged him to dramatically scale up the use of the split-finger offering. It was about a 50-50 divide in August, and he used the splitter more than 55% of the time in September and into the postseason. The impact on his results was immediate.
Finnegan allowed only three runs in 16 regular season innings as a Tiger. He fanned 23 of 66 opponents, almost doubling his early-season strikeout rate. His swinging strike rate jumped by five percentage points. The righty secured four saves and three holds while surrendering just one lead. He missed a couple weeks in September with a groin strain but immediately stepped back into a high-leverage role for skipper A.J. Hinch. Finnegan added 7 1/3 frames of three-run ball in the postseason, albeit with only three strikeouts.
Between the two teams, Finnegan posted a 3.47 ERA with a 24% strikeout percentage across 57 innings. The overall numbers aren’t far off the marks he’d carried over the first five seasons of his career. Finnegan entered 2025 with a 3.56 earned run average and a 23.5% strikeout rate in nearly 300 major league outings.
The altered pitch mix and the strong finish to the season have certainly changed teams’ perceptions of him. At this time last offseason, Finnegan found himself non-tendered by the Nationals in lieu of a projected arbitration salary around $8MM. He waited until a week into Spring Training to return to Washington on a $6MM contract with deferrals. Finnegan commands the first multi-year deal of his career one offseason later. The terms essentially match MLBTR’s prediction of two years and $20MM.
Finnegan will again pair with Will Vest at the back of Hinch’s bullpen. He has plenty of closing experience from his time in Washington and could handle the ninth inning on days when the Tigers use Vest earlier in leverage situations. Detroit could stand to bring in another swing-and-miss arm at the back end. Even after acquiring Finnegan, the Tiger bullpen ranked 25th in strikeout rate. Assuming they build Troy Melton back up as a starter, Finnegan and Vest are their only two projected leverage relievers who sit around 96 MPH on average. They’re a little light from the left side, but Vest and Finnegan each excel against opposite-handed batters. That could allow them to pursue another righty and stick with Tyler Holton and Brant Hurter as their top southpaws.
The specific salary breakdown is unreported. Evenly distributed $9.5MM salaries would push Detroit’s projected payroll to roughly $157MM, according to RosterResource. That’s about $15MM north of where they opened this past season. The long-term books are still wide open. Javier Báez and Colt Keith are the only other players under contract for 2027. Keith’s respective $5MM salaries for 2028-29 and modest option buyout in 2030 are their only commitments after the ’27 campaign.
Edwin Díaz, Gregory Soto and Finnegan came off the board on Tuesday. Robert Suarez, Brad Keller, Luke Weaver, Tyler Rogers, Seranthony Domínguez and Pete Fairbanks are the remaining unsigned relievers who made MLBTR’s Top 50 free agents. Keller and Weaver could get consideration as starters, while Rogers and Domínguez are setup types. Suarez is the best reliever still available. Fairbanks and Kenley Jansen join him as unsigned established closers.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic first reported the Tigers and Finnegan were nearing a deal. Robert Murray of FanSided had the two-year, $19MM agreement with $1MM bonus. Image courtesy of Stephen Brashear, Imagn Images.

Good. They’ve finally done something. Sorry, but re-signing Torres & Flaherty and outbidding themselves for a Korean league pitcher doesn’t count.
A Korean League Pitcher they already had in their system once.
That’s an overpay on Finnegan.
Not really
It’s time for Harris and Illitch to step up. 2 wasted playoff runs and they’re not easy to come by, take advantage of Skubal this season and go for it! If they try and fail at least they made the effort, losing Skubal and not trying is unacceptable and unforgivable. Only teams like Dodgers can repeat year after year in playoffs, because they have no limits to their spending, but Texas is more of an example for Detroit. Give it your best shot and let the cards fall where they may!
Good move for both sides. The Tigers helped him reach his potential, and he performed well especially before his IL stint.
If you have a nasty fastball, then you have nasty secondary pitches. You don’t need a ton of movement if your fastball does… Finnegan is exactly that guy. It’s why his splitter works…it looks like the fastball, but is slower. Everyone is sitting on his fastball they can’t hit, so throw them a slower fastball.
Relievers are sure getting plucked up fast this off season. Mahalo
Yeah, build your pens quick.
makes the SEA trade price for Ferrer seem fairly reasonable in hindsight . I’d put Ferrer clearly ahead of Soto and he got 7..75 million for a year
7 is good price. If you want to give up a top 100 for a reliever well it’s something you can do. Ford isn’t untouchable. I’d rather sign one. Rather spend 20m on Diaz. Maybe they aren’t as high on Ford. Fine with trade. Just more fine with signing someone. I wouldn’t trade anyone in my top 100 for that reliever.
Let just wait and see
Not many lefty relievers out there with years of control. Seems like no one was high on Ford outside the M’s org. They have been shopping him for years. Many teams don’t think he can even catch. I’m fine with the move. Saves money for a bat.
One of my complaints is we need another lefty in the pen besides Holton. Now, I like Holton, but he did seem to regress last year.
I’d be curious to see a statistical analysis of the after-effects of extra postseason games on pitchers. Probably not as impactful as I imagine, but there does seem to be a lingering effect the following season.
This will obviously be the second successive year of postseason hangover. The Tigers bullpen definitely wasn’t as effective in ’25. Of course, Chaos has to be factored in, as well.
It may be my imagination again, but it seems like the Tigers farm experienced a lot of injuries, as well.
We are staring down the barrel of a lockout.. It’s why Skubal doesn’t have a long term contract and why you are seeing short deals being done for the most part. This year has relief pitching written all over it.
You are exactly right. The Tigers will not pay a lot of that 2nd year contract to Finnegan.
I still say the Tigers should offer Skubal $360/10 yr. million now. $40 million this year. Then $32 million the last 9 (or some other deferral formula)….but no opt out until after the 2028 season.
They will get 2 full years of prime Skubal (’26 and ’28). They might lose 1/3 to 1/2 of the 2027 season. Skubal gets some of his 2027 money this year and won’t be hurt by the lockout. But he has to give the Tigers that extra year as the trade off.
It turns into Skubal getting $72 million + whatever % of the ’26 season they play over 3 years. He could make $104 mil. in that 3 years. Tigers get 3 prime years. Who knows what anybody looks like after 2028.
I expect that to be on the low end for Skubal. Getting closer though.
The Tigers can definitely afford to add $36M/avg a year to their payroll for their star player. We stepped up to pay Cabrera, even past his prime.
Glad we resigned Finnegan.
Skubal doesn’t have a long term deal because he and his agent want to test the free agency marketplace.
Cashman gotta wake up. They need relievers, and relievers are signing elsewhere.
Seeing the deals relievers are getting and after the Ferrer/Ford trade, its clear the reliever market has pushed to an uncomfortable level for a lot of teams. Going to be interesting who gets left out and then seeing how much the over-emphasis on relievers caps teams financially.
I guess but they still have to do something. Also 2/$19 really isn’t that bad.
I agree, several sod the relief deals haven’t been bad on paper.
I thought they got relievers at deadline? Can always use more but is it so bad they need to panic?
Ferrar wasn’t a panic. They have been eye balling him for years. Ferguson was what we ended up with at the deadline last year because no one would take Ford for a reliever. Clearly they are seeing something beyond the ERA.
Who said Ferrar was a panic?
Solid retention.
Good move. It won’t stop the whining, but nice to get the easy ones done early.
Good move Harris keep em coming
Sure beats signing an aging Jansen, or an injury prone Fairbanks.
Surprised they signed Jansen (obviously), but more so that they paid him more than Finnegan.
You can’t call Chris cheap, because that’s paying well for a reliever….No?
Above average salary?
New brown nose strategy….
Oh that’s not bad, nice bag for Finnegan.
No blarney
It’s interesting to see how the market is valuing relievers. The top guy only got three years garunteed. Even if they get injured and you’re paying them to sit, you’re out from under it pretty quick.
The reliever market actually feels the most rationale.
This contract feels like the going rate for what they’re paying for with about the average amount of risk upside for the price.
Doubt this is going to lesson the sting of sensing Skubal to LaLa land
Oh, that would be brutal
Ugh! I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
Not mad about this. Now get Fairbanks
No thanks. Fairbanks has a condition that makes it hard for him to grip a ball in cold weather. It would not be a good fit.
LOL. I heard someone mention that on a podcast a few days ago. Has this actually been confirmed by him though? He’s managed to put up pretty consistent numbers throughout his career and it’s not like he’s never had to pitch in cold weather on the road.
LOL. Are you new? This has been known. Educate yourself. It’s called Raynaud’s Syndrome. I’m pretty sure he knows he has the disease 😂 it affects blood flow in the fingers and causes numbness that flares up in cold weather. He has been on the IL for it on different occasions.
I like this a lot. Hopefully he’s great for Detroit. I’d like to see them add Jansen as Kahnle’s replacement.
Jansen is going to want the closer role as he pads numbers for the HOF. Detroit won’t be getting him to be a set up reliever..
Shut up with the Pirates were in on him.
Don’t be jealous the Pirates have a owner willing to be interested.
Congrats to Kyle for obtaining a decent contract as well as for taking it up a notch after going to the Tigers. He was always dogged with the Nats and I’m glad for him that Detroit found something to change in his pitch selection to help him improve. Although that sounds damning for my Nats under their previous regime.
Is a reliever with a 4.03 FIP over the last 3 years really worth that much?
Nope but the one you got to be 1.97 with you might be.
Brief 18 inning stint with higher than normal K/9. I’m skeptical.
With the Tigers, Finnegan begins again.
Awesome. He pitched well last year. It is a good sign when four players decided to come back to, or stay in, Detroit after having been there previously. That sends a good message. Now go sign Bellinger, Kim, a #2 starter and another bullpen arm! Still work together be done.
Kim would be helpful, but the Tigers have Javy for one more year, and the kids on the farm are almost ready. His bat is suspect, and the injury affected his defense. Bellinger provides some insurance If Tork regresses, but the Tigers already lean lefty. They need a RH bat, and with Veirling, Perez, Greene, Carpenter, Meadows and Jones, there is not really a need for an OF.
What they need is a RH bat to play 3B. This years options appear to be Bregman, Suarez and Bohm. Gallen would be a great fit for the rotation.
I don’t think Tork will regress, but his wild statistical fluctuations make him hard to predict. I predicted a bounce back season and 28 homers last year. Next year, I’ll say 28 homers again, but I gotta put his BA in the .230-.240 range.
Tigs have Javi for 3 more years…
I’m not sure I agree with your police work there, Lou. Baseball-reference says he’s signed for ’26 and ’27 (at $27M per) and his next earliest free agency is ’28. It just seems like 3 years!
correction: $24M
Only one of those OF’ers has been a full time player out there. Greene. Meadows is always hurt and hasnt hit well and Javy played pretty well in CF. Petez is a backup and split time with Carp. Jones is a backup and Vierling is a part timer too. Bellinger is not a backup and a better hitter and defender than most of their OF’ers.
As forc3B Keith did just fine there. Kim at SS and later as a supersub (which he is good at) sounds pretty good to me. He gets on base.
I do like the Gallen idea!
I thought Colt did pretty well at 3B, too. I’d like to see him get the bulk of playing time over there. He’s a big dude; I think the power will come. But he needs more consistent playing time IMO. McKinstry needs less. Sweeney needs to go to AAA until he’s traded.
Meadows and Perez are disposable. They need either a 3B, SS, CF, or RF that is right handed and can actually hit. With the versality of the roster they can move pieces around to fit whatever hole they need to fill with those 4 spots.
Excellent! Glad he’s back. Far from enough, though.
Good move for them, bad for me! Lolz this contest. 5/14 now.
Who’s gonna get waived/traded? Jung, Sweeney and or Malloy? Maybe Hurter or Brieske?
Deep down everybody knows Sweeney needs to go, except for Scott Harris. The absolute deadweight should have been cut at the Rule 5 deadline.
I’d keep the two pitchers out of that group. The rest are disposable AFAIC.
Why would Hurter go? He had a great season. Sweeney for sure.
I guess The Tigers were Finnegan’s 2nd or 3rd choice….hope he can keep up the good work in hid age-34/35 seasons.
Why would you assume that the Tigers were his 2nd or 3rd choice? Signing him this early in the process suggests they were the high bidder, or very close with the the opportunity to work with one of the best pitching coaches in the game.
Finnegan was effusive in his desire to return — much more than the standard player platitude. I think he sincerely wants to return. Any delay was probably the 2nd year or just waiting the market out. Several other relievers should start falling off the list now that Diaz has signed.
The price tag seems ok, but I wish they would have got a club option for a 3rd (even at a hefty raise).
Overall happy with the signing. The MLB off season can be a painfully slow process at times. This has been rumored for weeks so as the clock ticks you tend to get a bit nervous that it won’t happen. We’ll see what if anything the Tigers do the rest of the off season.
Time to get Gallen
Skub and Javy
Sheehan Scott DePaula Ferris, a guy from the back end of the teens in the system and cash.
Very good. Maybe this breaks the seal….
Just read online from multiple sources report claims:
“Framework of Tigers-Dodgers Deal sending Skubal to LA is in place
“KTLA TV sports anchor David Pingalore — who is at the winter meetings in Orlando — lit the internet ablaze on Tuesday night when he posted on his X account that a deal between the Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers for Skubal is “essentially in place” and only a few hiccups away from getting across the finish line..
Dodgers want a long term extension with Skubal.
Tigers must get ownership approval for a deal of this magnitude.
RHSP Tyler Glasnow, RHSP Emmet Sheehan, top outfield prospect Zyhir Hope are the heart of the package going to the Tigers with maybe a few other players or prospects added to that list.
He’s full of it. In fact, I told him as much on his X. If he were at all credible, MLBTR would be reporting it. Since they didn’t and still aren’t 3 days later, it’s obviously totally false. He should be fired.
It has been reported by SI and other sports outlets.
But, Unless the Dodgers and Tigers announce a Skubal trade
then there is No Deal at this juncture!
But it all comes from the one source. Some yahoo sports anchor on an LA TV news station. There must be way more credible sources saying he’s full of shiznit and that’s why MLBTR still hasn’t reported it. He’s a nobody. Literally made it up.
Not saying it’s not possible that he ends up in LA. But right now, there is no veracity to the rumor. I trust MLBTR completely. There silence on it speaks volumes.
*their
SI is not a reliable source
Yeah, seems about as credible as those stupid trade ideas that are cobbled together by AI.
I saw this yesterday. I’m skeptical of this report. I’m not claiming it is false. My skepticism is based on the fact I don’t know if Glasnow has a no trade list as a part of his contract. He has 10 years service time but lacks the last 5 years with the same team so 5/10 rights don’t come into play.
SI and other sports outlets have picked up the report from the KTLA sports anchor who is in Orlando @ MLB Winter Meetings.
The Bar opens early at those sports meetings.
Lots of rumors of trade proposals flying at those meetings.
Unless/Until the Dodgers and Tigers are ready to make a joint announcement, then there is No Deal!
@Sports I’ve seen the articles. I’m a fan who, while I’d like to see the tigers keep him, if they can’t, now is the time to trade him.
Obviously the Illitch family would need to sign off on this. That goes without saying. The return seems a bit light not knowing what the actual package is. The extension part also the dodgers want feels like another obstacle to me as well.
Yeah, the extension is probably something Boras won’t allow unless Skubal beats him over the head about it. Boras wants to find out LA’s number then have the other high-priced teams out-bid that – no matter how high that number is.
@84 I agree with all that. I do think there is something deeper at play here. This week Boras compared the tigers to the mystery machine on Scooby Doo without Skubal.
I would consider that was a dig if I was the Illicth family considering they have invested tens of millions of dollars in Boras clients making him extremely wealthy in the process, The Illitch family may have decided they will not deal with Boras this go around and trade Skubal instead.
“Pinga”-“lore”
Make a Cuban friend, friend.
Not nearly enough. Tyler Glassarm and a mediocre outfielder aren’t worth as much as the Dodgers think. Sheehan is a good start, though. If that’s the Dodgers offer, I think both the Yankees and the Mets will top it.
The Mets could beat it but if i’m the Tigers I’d hold out for McLean, Tong and Jett to front it. I think the Yankees players would be fools gold. No thanks on Spencer Jones. Honestly, If the Dodgers added a bat that fills a need then maybe? Add in Freeland? Glasnow and Sheehan would slot right in to the top of the rotation and Freeland can play SS/3b. Or Pages? No ones going to pay what the Tigers would ask for Skubal anyway so I look forward to him pitching his way to a World Series!
I’d be hesitant to do a deal with NYM. There farm has not produced much. The home grown currently on their roster are underperforming. NY media causes their prospects to be overhyped.
Lol he got you. This is not true. This is some idiot click baiting tv news anchor.
Crickets. All quiet on the Tigers front. So far, the only net gain to the Detroit roster: Drew Anderson from the Korean league.
Season tickets on sale now!
Designating J-Hen? Bummer. But he really doesnt have a path with Jamai Jones performing well as a RH outfield/bench bat.
Yeah I would have liked him to get a longer look. We could still use another good RH hitter and I don’t think they will sign Bergman.
Adios Jay-Hen. Good luck in your future endeavors, just not against the Tigs.
Not surprising. He was a liability in the field. I thought he was a little too passive offensively, as well.
Pretty decent contract for the Tigs too, all things considered.
Good news for J.J, and perhaps J. ham as well too. GO TIGERS !
While Malloy never did much in the limited AB’s he got with the Tigers, I bet he works out somewhere. He was a much better hitter in the minors than he looked at the MLB level and he’s only going to be 26 this season. He seems like he’d be a fit for a mess club like the Rockies or White Sox.
Malloy was not great in the field. He never showed the power that was hoped for. He seemed to try for a walk every AB. Any team with an open DH spot could at least consider him for a short side platoon.
I had high hopes for JHen. Disappointed but he didn’t take advantages of the chances he got unfortunately. Hope he catches on somewhere.
I feel like this took a longggg time to make official.
The player needs to be available to come in for a physical. Likely was busy. It’s not like there was a rush.
How is there no rush? If the medicals don’t check out, the org needs to pivot and so does the player. Excuses from this comment section border on absurd with things like this. A rational human, when offered $8M a year pending physical, is going to go get the physical right away. A LOT is on the line.
I’m suspicious.
The Orioles plan for MAYO:
They’ll SANDWICH him in !!
