The Yankees will be selecting outfielder Randal Grichuk‘s contract, as manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including the New York Post’s Greg Joyce) that Grichuk has made the Opening Day roster. New York has a full 40-man roster, so another transaction will be required to add Grichuk before the team’s first game on Wednesday.
In making the team, Grichuk locks in a $2.5MM salary for the 2026 season, as per the terms of the minor league deal he signed last month. Grichuk is an Article XX(B) free agent, meaning that his contract included three standard opt-out dates that he could trigger if not added to the 40-man roster. The first of those opt-outs was set for this weekend, so the Yankees have now sidestepped the issue by adding the outfielder to the 26-man roster.
Aaron Judge, Trent Grisham, and Cody Bellinger are set as New York’s starting outfield, and utilityman Amed Rosario and Grichuk now line up as the backup outfield options. (Giancarlo Stanton will probably get some time in the outfield this season, but he will be mostly be utilized as a designated hitter.) Bronx fans may not be pleased at seeing Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones relegated to Triple-A to begin the season, though the Yankees want those prized youngsters playing every day, whereas Grichuk is more suited to the sporadic nature of a big league backup job.
The right-handed hitting Grichuk figures to get most or all of his playing time when a southpaw is on the mound. Grichuk’s numbers against right-handers have tailed off over the years but he remained very dangerous against lefties, apart from a lackluster .227/.273/.430 slash line in 183 PA against left-handers last season when Grichuk was playing with the Diamondbacks and Royals.
Grichuk didn’t erase many doubts this spring by posting only a .313 OPS across 16 plate appearances in Grapefruit League games, but the Yankees are looking past that small sample size (and even the 2025 season) to the 34-year-old’s overall track record. While best suited for a corner outfield role, Grichuk can hold his own as a center fielder, making him a decent choice as a fourth outfielder and a candidate to spell the left-handed hitting Grisham when a lefty is on the mound.
Grichuk will be the only new face in a Yankees position-player mix that is basically unchanged from 2025. Rosario and Paul Goldschmidt were re-signed and will join Grichuk in backup roles, plus Bellinger was re-signed to a five-year, $162.5MM contract and Grisham stayed put by accepting the qualifying offer. Anthony Volpe will begin the season on the injured list, moving Jose Caballero into regular shortstop duty and increasing Rosario’s importance as the backup infielder.
Osvaldo Bido and Jorbit Vivas are on the 40-man, but won’t be making the 26-man and are out of options. Both will be D’dFA and that will clear up a spot for Grichuk.
Of course Grichuk was drafted right before a kid named Michael Trout. What could go wrong?

He needs everyday ABs and he wasn’t going to get that. I think he’s going to be a heck of a player with proper development and I’ve always been a fan, but I think this was the right move

They took Trout with the compensation pick they got from the Yankees for the Mark Teixeira signing, but my understanding is that they would have taken Trout in the Grichuk spot if they had only had the one pick, so he was always going to be an Angel.
Fun fact, right now the first and sixth picks of that draft have exactly 113 wins each, Strasburg and Wheeler.

honestly a bit surprised he had to settle for a non roster invite to start. Obviously just a platoon bat now, but the way he murders LHP seems like something several teams would have coveted.
Solid move. Dominguez needs to play everyday and work on his D and face all the lefties. If the clock strikes midnight they’ll just fire him into the sun and find another option for a lefty masher.
The preparation and reps Dominguez get this season will help make him a better player when he gets another chance to reach the majors.
Expect the Martian to play this season with a chip on his shoulder.

Frazier suffered a brain injury. He was actually good for a few hundred ab’s until he ran into a fence. His attitude and mouth didn’t win him and friends but it was the sudden loss of talent that forced him out.
Frazier suffered his first concussion in 2017 followed by its symptoms and then another one in 2020. We also saw how they effect players like Rizzo.

He is a curious case. He got away from the Yankees and was given a couple of chances to catch on and didn’t. I know Rizzo didn’t bounce back well from his concussion but he was old, Frazier was a kid. If I had to pick I’d say his talent and coachability were lacking and the pitchers learned to how to shut him down.
There would be no point having Dominguez and or Jones on this roster right now. They needed a righty complementary bat. No Yankee fan should be displeased with that, I’m not

As a player, Grichet has no flaws. Not great, but pretty darn good at Baseball. The Yanks could do far less.
Typical Cashman move. Take the declining vet who can’t hit any more and his defense declining. Absolutely prefer that guy over giving a chance to a young guy who has potential to break out and become a good regular player for years to come. Awesome!
Scott, how is he going to break out with very sporadic playing time? At the moment, everyone is healthy. Dominguez did not fit the bench role they needed. I’m sure once the first OF/DH injury hits, he will be the first player promoted
Cashman worst off-season so far. It started with bringing back Grisham and doing nothing else. The Weathers trade was a mistake and has looked horrible. Dominguez should be playing or trade him
