Phillies, Giants Considering Rich Aurilia

By Tim Dierkes | February 4, 2009 at 11:24am CDT

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick spoke to Rich Aurilia’s agent Barry Axelrod, who said the Orioles’ Ty Wigginton signing might move things along for his client.  The Giants and Phillies had been interested in Wiggy and maintain interest in Aurilia.  Ken Davidoff of Newsday would like to see the Mets get in on him.

Ken Rosenthal wrote earlier today that the Phillies also continue to monitor Nomar Garciaparra, who is "trying to decide whether he is physically sound enough to play next season."

Odds and Ends: Crede, Jays, Howard

By Tim Dierkes | February 4, 2009 at 11:15am CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • Here’s the transcript of WEEI’s interview with Theo Epstein.  Epstein says "nothing is hot or active right now" for the Red Sox.
  • Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune wrote yesterday that "a Joe Crede signing remains a real possibility for the Twins."
  • Shi Davidi of the Canadian Press writes about the Blue Jays’ attempts to break into the Japanese market.
  • Will the players union organize a training camp for unsigned players?  Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times discusses the slow-moving market.

Rosenthal On Peavy, Ohman, Looper

By Tim Dierkes | February 4, 2009 at 9:10am CDT

Here’s the latest from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

  • Jeff Moorad’s acquistion of the Padres does not affect the likelihood of a Jake Peavy trade, according to Rosenthal’s source.  There have been no recent conversations with the Cubs about Peavy.
  • The Phillies had been confident of signing Ty Wigginton before the Orioles offered two years.  The Phils are still mulling Nomar Garciaparra and Rich Aurilia, with the Giants also in on Aurilia.  The Phillies are out on Will Ohman.
  • Braden Looper is receiving interest from Baltimore, but he prefers the NL.  The Brewers are not optimistic about signing Looper despite a recent conversation with one of his agents (Tom Haudricourt believes the Brewers are "laying in the weeds" for when the right pitcher comes along).  Looper is Plan B behind Randy Wolf for the Dodgers, and not a candidate to return to the Cardinals (who are apparently out of money).  One other team known to have interest in Looper is the Pirates.

Odds and Ends: Wieters, Varitek, Ohman

By Tim Dierkes | February 3, 2009 at 12:54pm CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • Chat today, 2pm CST.
  • RotoAuthority explains why Matt Wieters is a good fantasy pick even if he doesn’t debut with the Orioles til mid-May.
  • Baseball America’s Jim Callis has the updated ’09 June draft order.
  • Cristian Guzman was wise to sign a two-year, $16MM extension when he did, his agent tells MLB.com’s Bill Ladson.
  • An agreement to sell the Padres to Jeff Moorad could be done by mid-month, says Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
  • Jason Varitek doesn’t need to worry about regaining Type A status, says Rob Bradford of WEEI.
  • Nothing appears imminent with the Phillies and Will Ohman, David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News writes.

Phillies Still Talking Contract With Ryan Howard

By Tim Dierkes | February 2, 2009 at 9:51am CDT

Jim Salisbury of the Philadelphia Inquirer talked to Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr., who said the team is still involved in contract negotiations with Ryan Howard’s agent Casey Close.

This is Howard’s second arbitration year; he’s requested $18MM while the Phils countered at $14MM.  A panel of three people will decide whether Howard earns $18MM or $14MM in 2009, unless the two sides reach an agreement prior to the hearing.  Salisbury believes the hearing is scheduled in the February 9-13 range.

ESPN’s Jayson Stark wrote last week that the previous request record for a second-year arb player was Derek Jeter’s $10.5MM in 2000.  Howard is in uncharted waters once again.

Phillies Interested In Will Ohman

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 31, 2009 at 12:06pm CDT

According to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick, the Phillies are interested in Will Ohman. They contacted his agent last week and will continue talks next week.

Now that J.C. Romero’s been suspended for 50 games, the Phillies will use Scott Eyre as their main lefty out of the bullpen. Adding Ohman, who was originally seeking a two-year deal for about $8MM, would give Charlie Manuel another lefty to rely on.

Stark On Greinke, Manny, Dunn, Swisher

By Tim Dierkes | January 29, 2009 at 2:26pm CDT

The latest from ESPN’s Jayson Stark…

  • The Cubs’ ownership situation is not close to the finish line, which is one reason the team won’t be acquiring Jake Peavy anytime soon.
  • One source of Stark’s suggested Zack Greinke nearly left his current agent John Courtright of SFX for Scott Boras, a whisper I’d heard as well.  But now Greinke is happy with his contract and agent.
  • Free agents such as Manny Ramirez and Ivan Rodriguez could reasonably wait until March to sign.  Not a bad thing for this website!
  • Adam Dunn would like Manny to sign earlier, as he’s waiting to see what the Dodgers (his preferred team) do.  The Nationals have been Dunn’s most aggressive suitor, the Orioles have mild interest, and the Braves have backed off.
  • Stark questions the idea of talks for Manny heating up lately, since the Mets, Yankees, and Angels are out and the Giants are only conditionally interested.
  • When Alex Rodriguez was a free agent last winter, Joe Torre advised the Dodgers against signing him.
  • The Phillies would like to move Geoff Jenkins for a right-handed hitting outfielder, but Jenkins is paid too much.  Jay Payton and Emil Brown are not on the Phillies’ radar; they still like Nomar Garciaparra.
  • The Yankees are apparently "softening to the idea of trading Nick Swisher," with the Braves the top suitor.

Odds And Ends: Heilman, Pedro, Twins

By DJ Blatter | January 28, 2009 at 9:54pm CDT

A few more links for Wednesday…

  • Ryan Howard said a long-term deal with the Phillies would be "beautiful," for what it’s worth.
  • The New York Times’ Ben Shpigel comments on the Aaron Heilman deal and its effect on new teammate Jeff Samardzija.
  • Marty Noble of MLB.com learned that Mets GM Omar Minaya met with Pedro Martinez in the Dominican Republic today, but did not make an offer (and re-signing him remains a long shot).
  • Yahoo’s Tim Brown has the roundup on the Twins’ hot stove happenings.
  • Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog.com takes on the Manny Ramirez-to-Mets conspiracy theorists.

Heyman’s Latest: Pedro, Alou, Pudge

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 28, 2009 at 5:47pm CDT

The latest from SI.com’s Jon Heyman:

  • Some baseball people believe Omar Minaya will bring Pedro Martinez back to New York once Oliver Perez signs. Minaya loves Pedro and Pedro may prefer to return to the Mets
  • The Phillies have about $3MM left to spend; Heyman wonders whether Moises Alou would sign for that kind of money.
  • The Phillies have also considered Rich Aurilia and Nomar Garciaparra, but Aurilia may simply return to the Giants if they have room for him.
  • Heyman says Ivan Rodriguez makes the most sense for the Marlins, but adds that they have little money to spend.
  • Jeff Moorad’s attempt to buy the Padres will almost certainly go through.
  • Heyman makes one clarification about Milton Bradley’s deal after viewing the contract. It’s a two year $20MM deal with an option for a third year that kicks in if Bradley spends fewer than 75 days on the DL this year.

Odds and Ends: Lohse, Reyes, Greinke, Howard

By Tim Dierkes | January 27, 2009 at 9:52am CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • Chat today, 2pm CST.
  • Rangers president Nolan Ryan called the Winter Meetings "a big waste of money and time."
  • Nationals GM Jim Bowden implied that a Tom Glavine signing is unlikely.
  • Kyle Lohse feels the pain of all the unsigned free agents; he didn’t sign until March 14th last year.  Lohse said he "put a lot of pressure on all parties" to get his four-year, $41MM extension done on September 29th.  Given that it wasn’t on the open market, Scott Boras did well for Lohse.
  • The Dodgers prefer Dennys Reyes over Luis Ayala, says Ken Gurnick.
  • Joe Posnanski loves the Zack Greinke signing.  Sam Mellinger says the Royals and fans are no longer allowed to complain about baseball’s financial structure.
  • Maury Brown leans slightly toward Ryan Howard winning his arbitration case.  I think the Phillies will prevail.
  • Brandon Lyon turned down more lucrative offers for a chance to close in Detroit.  ESPN’s Keith Law likes the Tigers’ signing, in part due to Jim Leyland’s track record with relievers.
  • The Marlins seem to prefer the trade market, if they are to add a catcher.
  • Joe Nathan knows his $47MM extension signed in March of ’08 is looking pretty good right now.
