Josh James Out 6-8 Months After Undergoing Hip Surgery

By TC Zencka | October 24, 2020 at 1:25pm CDT

Astros reliever Josh James underwent surgery to repair a labral tear in his left hip, per Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter). The recovery period for James is expected to be somewhere from 6 to 8 months, which means he is likely to miss the beginning of 2021.

The Astros have hoped James would take a step forward in his development for a couple of seasons now, but he struggled more than ever in 2020, particularly with his command. He remained a big piece of the bullpen into the postseason, however, when manager Dusty Baker called his number once in the ALDS and twice in the ALCS against the Rays. James managed two scoreless innings in the middle performance, but he was hit with a blown save in each of his other two outings. He gave up 4 earned runs on 5 hits (2 home runs) in 4 innings total.

During the regular season, James saw game action 13 times, including two starts, logging a 7.27 ERA/7.06 FIP across 17 1/3 innings with 10.9 K/9 to 8.8 BB/9. His four-seamer was down a tick to an average of 96.3 mph, though it wasn’t far enough off his career norms to cause concern for the 27-year-old.

    Some body explain me
Astros are the best team in technology and the same time they have the most injuries players
That mean technology don’t apply to human body or they conditioning coach are not good .

A lot of pitchers, players hurt this season. I put some of it on Covid and them shutting down in Spring then starting up when they did. Players and pitchers really were not conditioned right with that shut down and couldn’t really do a lot so can see why some players with Astros didn’t get going this year. Maybe age. Brantley was hurt and Alvarez was already so just hope we can have a normal season and have a good team for next season. With all these young pitchers that were Single A pitchers even and some of these double A are they considered major leaguers now or will they still go back to Minors even. Just don’t know how things will all work next season. Wonder if Houston will try for Trevor Bauer or will he stay with Reds as he loved it. Astros will be different and think Verlander may be done. Unless he has new life after TJ and recovery time. This would be crazy if we were vying for WS title again and with Dodgers. But here’s to what we do during off season.

After what Bauer said about the Astros organization, I highly doubt there will be any interest between either party this offseason.

I don’t see Bauer and Bregman coexisting well in that clubhouse anymore than Bauer and Cole in New York. Bauer is going to find an unlikable personality is going to limit his suitors. Probably why we never saw Barry Bonds try to leave the Giants

James is way overrated. While I hope gets better and I wish him well, I hope he has thrown his last pitch as an Astro.

I don’t think he’s overrated. He has electric stuff, he just struggles to command it. Similar to Valdez his first two years.

Seems like a bad injury for a pitcher. Power comes from the base and carries through the hips. Might explain some of his setbacks.

James wasn’t that good this year. Maybe the surgery will fix it, or maybe he just isn’t a major leaguer. Either way, the Astros desperately need more pitching.

I hope James Click QO’s both Springer and Brantley. Springer almost certainly goes. Brantley might actually accept the QO, which hardly looks like a bad deal for the Astros. If Brantley rejects, he might regret it, allowing the Astros to get him on an even cheaper deal.
