Mitch Moreland Changes Agencies

By Connor Byrne | July 23, 2020 at 6:10am CDT

Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland has switched agencies and hired Paragon Sports as his representation, MLBTR’s Steve Adams reports. MLBTR has made note of the change in our Agency Database.

The soon-to-be 35-year-old Moreland is entering his fourth season with the Red Sox, who have signed him to three short-term contracts dating back to the 2016 offseason. He most recently inked a one-year, $3MM deal with the team back in January. That pact includes a $3MM option or a $500K buyout for 2021, so Moreland could stick on their roster beyond this season.

Since his career started in 2010, Moreland has consistently offered league-average production on offense, having batted .251/.319/.444 (99 wRC+) with 166 home runs in 4,132 plate appearances. Although injuries limited Moreland to 91 games and 335 PA in 2019, it was nonetheless one of his most productive and powerful seasons. He slashed .252/.328/.507 (112 wRC+) with 19 homers and a personal-best .255 ISO, which betters his lifetime mark of .192 by 63 points.

He was protected last year for the most part and not faced LH for the most part as remember, who he generally struggles against. Chavis and others would get the start vs them and whenever a RH guy would come in, or later innings Moreland would come in.

Not a knock on him. Good clubhouse guy and still tad above average with the glove, well worth the 3m salary.

Great guy to have around based on observations from afar.

At the right price, he’s a valuable asset. Yes he strikes out too much but who doesn’t? As long as Devers is at third Moreland need to be at first. His glove has been as good as there is although as others have stated, injuries have “hurt” him. Finally, his ability to hit in the clutch also can’t be understated.

I think he’s underrated. Not saying he’s a superstar, but underrated.

Hated to see him leave the Rangers at end of 2016 season. Solid first baseman, and all around good guy.

Same tape player is Mike Napoli was at the end of his career, He had some clutch moments with the Sox, And he’s a pretty good first baseman clubhouse leader, I hope they do bring him back next year, as the 2021 season is likely another rebuilding year for the shot year for the Red Sox

Nice comparison although Moreland has been top shelf in the field. Amazing how salaries have changed for the good but not great player.
