Marlins To Select Contract Of Brad Boxberger

By Jeff Todd | July 23, 2020 at 6:45am CDT

The Marlins will carry Brad Boxberger on their Opening Day roster, MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro reports on Twitter. He’ll have to be added to the 40-man roster.

Boxberger joined the Miami organization on a minor-league deal right at the outset of Spring Training. The veteran reliever impressed in Grapefruit League action, allowing just one earned run and two baserunners while striking out eight in 6 1/3 innings.

This time last year, the 32-year-old Boxberger was pitching in the upper minors after a disappointing early showing led the Royals to cut him loose. He wasn’t able to force his way back up last summer but obviously impressed the Marlins brass this time around. Through 311 total MLB innings over his eight-year career, Boxberger owns a 3.59 ERA and has registered 77 saves.

Marlins are gonna be a pretty good team this year and that’s coming from one of the biggest marlins haters. Look, I think tat franchise has been bad for baseball for a decade plus now. Yea, they have 2 World Series rings, but they have very few winning seasons and can’t bring fans to the stadium at alllll. That said, Jeter appears to be doing things right. Their farm is strong although it should be much better after trading away the talent they did. And the current roster is pretty darn good also, albeit they don’t have depth. They actually may be a giant thorn in everyone’s side this year. I still think they are the bottom of the pack, but in a 60 game span, if they stay healthy and are hot, who knows… maybe they’re in it

Maybe. I think they are another year, at least, away from climbing the ladder. This process will take awhile, which technically started after 2017. The shortened season hurts the Marlins in-terms of minor league development.

But I hear ya, I think they are trending in the right direction.

really, can we stop this? yes, essentially any team fan get hot over 60 games and squeeze in, but we act like getting hot over 60 games is easy if you’re a bad team. how many times recently have the Marlins even won 30 of 60? i cant imagine its a lot

If they had last years roster, I’d say they have 0% of winning it all in a 60 game season. This roster, they have a chance… albeit still stupid low

They are improving, but let’s not overhype their major league roster too much

I mean, I still said they are bottom of the pack. But compared to recent years, their roster looks elite. Helps when the bar is set stupid low. Lol
