Perrotto’s Latest: Giles, Crisp, Wells

John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus has some hot stove tidbits to consider in his Sunday column.

  • Perrotto notes that Jeff Baker’s success this spring for the Rockies could lead to a trade of Marcus Giles.  Baker is hitting .316/.350/.579 in a 19 AB sample.  Giles is at .385/.500/.615 in 13 ABs (yes, it seems silly to be talking about these stats).  Giles hasn’t hit much since ’05, so I doubt he’d bring anything in return.
  • Perrotto says the Padres are "considering trying to trade for Coco Crisp."  However, Tom Krasovic wrote on Friday that the Padres pursuing Crisp was doubtful for many reasons.  Who knows; at the least, Theo Epstein and Kevin Towers get along.
  • David Wells is still kicking around wanting to play, and could have to wait and serve as a midseason reinforcement.

David Wells Denied By Cardinals

David Wells’ agent, Gregg Clifton, reached out to the Cardinals recently to see if his client could assist them  with their early season rotation uncertainty.   It’s been said that Boomer, 44, is looking to make about 20 starts this year.  He earned $3MM in ’07.

Derrick Goold says the Cardinals prefer their in-house options over Wells.  What does PECOTA have to say about this?

David Wells – 4.55 ERA
Anthony Reyes – 4.32 ERA
Brad Thompson – 4.29 ERA
Todd Wellemeyer – 4.39 ERA

Seems the Cardinals are on track with this one.  I’m sure they’d be ecstatic to get those ERAs out of that trio.  Goold says the Cards will continue to track free agents.  Kyle Lohse and Jeff Weaver are two who are healthy right now, if nothing else.  As for Roger Clemens, the Cards aren’t terribly interested given Clemens’ probable late start.

Cards Eyeing Weaver, Colon

With the price of free agent starting pitching dropping by the day and Matt Clement looking questionable, it’s only natural that the Cardinals would explore the market.  Indeed, John Mozeliak is looking at Jeff Weaver and Bartolo Colon.  Seems that Impacto Deportivo may have been misinformed on the whole Colon-to-Chicago thing.

Weaver seems the smarter option for a team looking for healthy innings.  If nothing else, Weaver can provide that.  Something tells me he’s not getting $8MM this time around.  His most recent success was in St. Louis, so maybe Dave Duncan can guide him to a league average season.

Colon is a wild card.  Even if his stuff isn’t there, if he can take the ball he has value.  He’ll obviously find the NL more to his liking.

Another possibility for the Cards is David Wells, according to Peter Gammons.  Gammons says Boomer "would like to come back for 20-something starts."

Mariners, Reds, Like David Wells

A couple of clubs have their eye on 44 year-old southpaw David Wells: the Mariners and Reds.  Hey, for a few million bucks why not.

The Ms would represent Boomer’s ninth organization.  Signing him surely wouldn’t preclude them from acquiring another, more reliable starter.

He did have a brief stint with the Reds in 1995, making 11 starts for them before being sent to Detroit in a deadline deal.  I read Wells’ book several years ago, but can’t remember exactly how his "tortured dealings" with Marge Schott played out.

Wells has interest in pitching for the Mets, but his agent hasn’t been able to get an audience with them yet.

Dodgers Still In On Andruw, Rowand?

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 11:03pm: Talks between the Dodgers and Andruw revived today, according to Ken Gurnick.  Gurnick thinks Scott Boras is looking for something similar to J.D. Drew’s Dodgers deal, a long-term one with an opt out in the middle.  Boras told Jerry Crasnick today that he does not have a one or two-year deal in mind for Andruw.

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 2:00am: MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick is with Tony Jackson on this one…Colletti hasn’t made any offers and will move on to other priorities unless Jones and Rowand reduce their demands.  Gurnick notes that the Dodgers are still in hard on Hiroki Kuroda but don’t seem terribly interested in David Wells.

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 12:44am: Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times does not agree with Jackson exactly…he says the Dodgers still want to sign Jones or Rowand.

UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 11:49pm: Jackson now has some quotes from Ned Colletti…Colletti wasn’t able to get to the point of making an offer to Andruw.  Apparently Boras wants far more than the Dodgers think Jones is worth.  Also, Aaron Rowand wants 5/70 and the Dodgers ain’t havin’ that.

UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 9:31pm: Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News counters Crasnick’s report, saying the Dodgers did not offer 2/32 to Andruw.  As far as Jackson can tell, no offer at all was made to Jones today.

UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 1:04pm: ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick says the Dodgers have a two-year, $32MM offer on the table.  That seems a little light; I suggested $38MM earlier.

FROM 12-3-07 at 1:24am:

According to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, the Dodgers have stepped up their talks with free agent Andruw Jones.  As we suggested before, it seems Ned Colletti’s rift with Scott Boras was overblown.

Andruw is asking for something bigger than Torii Hunter’s five-year, $90MM pact.  However, Jones had a terrible 2007 and the Dodgers only want to give him two guaranteed years.  This is one of Ned Colletti’s methods that I actually like, the paying more to decrease the term (see Rafael Furcal and Jason Schmidt).

So if Torii makes $18MM annually, maybe the Dodgers will offer Andruw two years, $38MM?  That would keep their risk low while giving Jones a chance to become a free agent as he enters his age 33 season.  If no agreement can be reached, it sounds like the Dodgers could make a similar high-dollar short-term offer to Aaron Rowand.  Failing that, they’d turn to Mike Cameron.

Gurnick adds that the Dodgers are aggressively pursuing Hiroki Kuroda for rotation depth.

Odds and Ends: Kendall, Crisp, Gagne

I’m back in the swing of things, kind of.  We’re still living out of boxes, but I’ve got a laptop and I’m digging into all the rumors I missed.  Joe did a great job the last couple of days.  Be sure to visit his Yankees blog, River Ave. Blues.  On to today’s random rumors…

  • I’m hearing that Jason Kendall could be a fallback for the Mets if they can’t pry Ramon Hernandez loose from the Orioles.
  • The Blue Jays have about $4MM to spend, and J.P. Ricciardi likes the idea of Michael Barrett splitting time behind the plate with Gregg Zaun.  It seems unlikely, though, because the Padres would have to not offer arbitration to Barrett.  And Barrett would have to take a one-year, $4MM deal.
  • Jamey Newberg discusses the idea of a Coco Crisp for Gerald Laird swap.  He notes that the market for Laird should be picking up, but the Red Sox might prefer to wait to trade Crisp.
  • Haven’t heard this one much yet…how about Eric Gagne for the Houston closer vacancy?  Would Scott Boras present a problem?
  • David Wells could be an option for the Mets, if he doesn’t retire or end up on the West Coast.
  • One free agent from Japan who hasn’t gotten much press is Marc Kroon.  He didn’t catch on in MLB but has been doing well for Yokohama the past few years.  Kroon holds the record for the fastest pitch ever thrown in a Japanese game (161 km/h, which is about 100 mph).  You can see that in this video (the second pitch he throws, the crowd loves it).  Kroon is considering trying the Majors again; he says so on his website (note that his site plays music when you visit).

  • MLB.com’s Free Agent Frenzy has begun.  You can win Opening Day tickets by closely predicting where 15 free agents will land.  A good strategic move would be to wait until deadline day, November 15th, before submitting.  That way you’ll have more info (keep your browser right here for all the latest free agent info).  By the way, my Top 50 Free Agents list should be ready around Monday.
  • Fielding Bible has their 2007 awards (click the Winners tab).  So much for those who say Andruw is slipping!
  • Miguel Cabrera is available, according to Peter Gammons.  Gammons thinks any package would have to begin with a top pitching prospect such as Phil Hughes, Clay Buchholz, or Clayton Kershaw.
  • Sounds like the Rockies want to keep the 2007 club mostly intact by bringing back free agents (Kaz Matsui, Yorvit Torrealba, Matt Herges, LaTroy Hawkins).  However Josh Fogg and Jeremy Affeldt may be allowed to leave.
  • Though they’re on his list, it doesn’t sound like the D’Backs can afford Curt Schilling.
  • The A’s are talking about re-signing Shannon Stewart, but I don’t see it.  That would have to cost at least $3-4MM.  Meanwhile, Mike Piazza might retire.  Susan Slusser talks about how the A’s would receive compensation for Stewart and Piazza, both Type B free agents.  But that’s only if they offer them arbitration, which is questionable.
  • Comeback time!  Matt Mantei is all surgically repaired and wants to get back into action.  He feels great!  He’d take a minor league contract and/or play for the minimum.  Can’t wait til spring, when we can hear about all the guys who are in the best shape of their careers.  The Tigers might need him with Joel Zumaya’s new, odd injury.
  • A couple of 40+ southpaws will pitch in ’08 – Tom Glavine and David Wells.
  • The O’s will pass on Kris Benson at $7.5MM next year, no surprise.  He had rotator cuff surgery last March.
  • U.S.S. Mariner’s "reasonable" offseason plan.

Dodgers To Sign David Wells

UPDATE: Dan Graziano’s source says Wells is close to signing with the Dodgers.

Back on Monday, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe broke down the David Wells situation.  At the time of his writing Wells seemed likely to retire.  The sticking point is $1.13MM in incentives Boomer could’ve earned with San Diego – he wants his new team to pay up.  Four clubs inquired, with the Rockies and Dodgers confirmed.  When Ken Rosenthal wrote on the topic that same day, he said the Rockies would pass.  The Mark Redman signing probably puts the nail in that coffin.

Breaking down the candidates:

  • According to the L.A. Times today, the Dodgers still appear interested.  Brett Tomko’s stinker last night didn’t hurt. 
  • The Mets could be one of the mystery teams.
  • The Diamondbacks and Mariners appear to be out. 
  • I’ve speculated in the past that the Braves might consider signing Wells. 
  • The Phillies have a heightened need with Cole Hamels’ injury. 
  • The Cardinals appear set with Joel Pineiro as their fifth starter for now.
