Minor MLB Transactions: 3/25/16

By Mark Polishuk | March 25, 2016 at 7:12pm CDT

Here are the latest minor moves from around baseball, with the newest moves at the top of the post…

  • Reds minor leaguer Jose Veras has received a 72-game PED suspension, as Cincinnati assistant director of media relations Jamie Ramsey tweets. Veras, 22, has not yet moved past the Dominican summer league in his professional career. He shouldn’t be confused with the long-time MLB veteran and former closer by the same name — who is still a free agent looking for his next opportunity after failing to crack the majors last year for the first time since he reached the bigs in 2006.
  • Right-hander Deolis Guerra became a free agent rather than accept an outright assignment from the Angels, though manager Mike Scioscia told reporters (including MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez) that Guerra was staying with the club on a new minor league contract.  The Halos selected Guerra off the Pirates roster in the Rule 5 draft last winter, and since Guerra had already been outrighted off Pittsburgh’s roster when he was with the organization, he didn’t have to be returned to the Bucs after his initial removal from Anaheim’s roster.  Guerra, who turns 27 next month, made his Major League debut last season, posting a 6.48 ERA over 16 2/3 innings for Pittsburgh.  He boasted some impressive peripherals (17 strikeouts against three walks) but also allowed five homers in his short stint in the bigs.
  • Outfielder Felix Perez has requested a release from his minor league deal with the Orioles, possibly to pursue an opportunity with a Japanese team, Rich Dubroff of CSNmidatlantic reports (Twitter links).  Perez hit .281/.329/.404 over 2114 plate appearances in the Reds’ system from 2010-14 and he spent 2015 playing for Monterrey’s Mexican League team.

Minor MLB Transactions: 3/4/16

By Steve Adams | March 4, 2016 at 7:53pm CDT

Here are today’s minor moves from around the league…

  • Veteran minor league outfielder Felix Perez has also signed on with the Orioles on a minor league deal, Rich Dubroff of CSNmidatlantic.com tweets. The 31-year-old has yet to crack the majors since signing under somewhat controversial circumstances. He had a four-year run in the Reds system and spent most of last year playing in the Mexican League, slashing a robust .312/.390/.580 with 20 home runs in 395 plate appearances.
  • First baseman/outfielder Mike Carp is headed to the Orioles on a minors pact, as Jon Meoli of the Baltimore Sun reports. The 29-year-old won’t receive an invitation to MLB camp in the contract after playing little in 2015 and failing to crack the majors for the first time since his debut year. The left-handed-hitting Carp was coming off of a hugely disappointing 2014 season, so it’s been some time since he’s produced in the majors. But over 2011 to 2013, he did carry a .267/.334/.454 slash and hit 26 home runs over 745 plate appearances.
  • The White Sox have inked right-hander Kameron Loe to a minor league contract, reports MLB.com’s Scott Merkin (Twitter link). The 34-year-old Loe has spent parts of nine seasons in the Major Leagues, most recently appearing with the Braves in 2013. He’ll head to minor league camp for the Sox, making him more of a veteran depth piece than an immediate option in the bullpen. Loe struggled through the 2014 season with the Triple-A affiliates for the Royals, Braves and D-backs, which led to a 2015 stint with the Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League. Loe had a strong showing in the Dominican Winter League this offseason and will look to rediscover the form that allowed him to pitch to a 3.61 ERA and 3.60 FIP from 2008-12 with the Rangers and Brewers.

Released: Bello, Herndon, Accardo, Rodriguez, Rogers

By Jeff Todd | March 31, 2015 at 1:10pm CDT

Here are the latest minor moves, all via the MLB.com transactions page, the PCL transactions page, and/or the International League transactions page:

  • The Braves have released catcher Yenier Bello. Bello, of course, signed out of Cuba for a $400K bonus last year, but the 30-year-old obviously did not show enough to stay in the system. He slashed .308/.315/.404 over just 55 plate appearances last season split between the Rookie and low-A levels.
  • Brewers right-hander David Herndon will also be in search of a new organization after being released. The 29-year-old carries a 3.85 career ERA over 117 big league frames, but has not seen action at the game’s highest level since 2012.
  • The Diamondbacks have released big league veterans Jeremy Accardo and Henry Rodriguez. Both righties, Accardo (eight years) and Rodriguez (six years) each have seen their share of time at the major league level, including action in a closing role. Accardo owns a 4.30 ERA with 6.5 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9 across 284 2/3 big league innings, but last saw action at that level in 2012. Rodriguez, still just 28, has worked to a 4.31 ERA over his 150 1/3 lifetime frames, striking out 9.0 and walking 6.4 per nine.
  • The Rangers also released a couple of right-handers in Mark Rogers and Mitch Atkins. Rogers, once one of the game’s brightes pitchign prospects, has struggled with a variety of injury issues and was not able to gain traction in camp. Atkins, 29, had worked to a 3.76 ERA with 7.0 K/9 against 2.3 BB/9 in 141 1/3 innings last year in the upper minors. Both players have some big league experience to their credit, but none in recent campaigns.
  • Reds right-hander Wilmer Font and oufielder Felix Perez have both been released. Font is just 24 and has reached the bigs briefly in each of the last two seasons with the Rangers. But he ended last season with an elbow injury and never played in major league camp this spring. The 30-year-old Perez, meanwhile, hit .280/.325.450 at the Triple-A level last year but struggled in camp this spring.

Reds Sign Felix Perez

By Zachary Links | May 17, 2010 at 5:45pm CDT

The Reds signed 25-year-old Cuban outfielder Felix Perez to a minor league deal worth $550K today. Jorge Arangure Jr. of ESPN.com reported yesterday that a signing seemed likely and the team confirmed the move today on Twitter, with John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer adding the dollar amount (via Twitter). Last night, Reds GM Walt Jocketty said his club was one of many teams still talking to Perez, according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.

Major League Baseball suspended Perez for one year for lying about his age and reinstated him in October of last year. Perez agreed to a deal with the Yankees in the spring of 2009.  The proposed deal would have included a signing bonus in the range of $3MM to $3.5MM.  At the time, Perez claimed to be 20 years old though sources told Arangure that it was believed he could be four or even five years older than that.  Upon discovering the age discrepancy, the Bombers broke off talks.

When the Yankees ceased discussions with the outfielder, several scouts told Arangure that this was a blessing in disguise as they didn't believe he was worth the money that was being offered.

Odds & Ends: Schuerholz, Fukumori, Perez

By Mike Axisa | June 6, 2009 at 9:30am CDT

Some Saturday morning links to hold you over while the cartoons are on commercial break…

  • Braves' team president John Schuerholz issued a public apology for how Tom Glavine's release was handled, as MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports. "I'm not regretting the decision making. I'm regretting the manner in which it was portrayed and explained to Tommy. I feel like I could have done a better job with that."
  • Patrick at NPB Tracker passes along a report that the Rangers are trying to transfer Kazuo Fukumori's rights to a Japanese club. Fukumori had a 20.25 ERA in four ineffective outings for Texas last year, but he hasn't pitched this year and is training in Arizona.
  • ESPN.com's Jorge Arangure Jr. reports that Cuban outfielder Felix Perez has been suspended one year for falsifying age documents. Perez, who claimed he was 20 years old, was close to signing a $3MM contract with the Yankees when it was discovered that he is actually 24 or 25.
  • UmpBump.com's Nick Kapur lists one player each NL team should cut from their roster. While just about everyone listed has been downright terrible this year, most of the players would have no trouble finding a new job if they were actually released.
