Brewers Place Aaron Civale On Injured List

The Brewers are placing right-hander Aaron Civale on the 15-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain, manager Pat Murphy announced this morning (via Andrew Wagner of Freeman Sports and 105.7 The Fan). There’s no immediate timetable for his absence. Right-hander Grant Anderson is up from Triple-A Nashville in his place.

It’s yet another major blow to a pitching staff that Murphy, just four games into the season, described as “decimated” in his media availability today. Civale joins Tobias Myers (oblique strain), DL Hall (lat strain), Aaron Ashby (oblique strain), Robert Gasser (Tommy John surgery last June) and Brandon Woodruff (2023 shoulder surgery) on the injured list at a time when veteran Jose Quintana is still building up in Nashville. Quintana got a late start, signing midway through spring training, and agreed to be optioned to Triple-A to begin his season.

At present, the Brewers have just two healthy starters: Freddy Peralta and Nestor Cortes. They’re turning to swingman Elvin Rodriguez to start today’s game. Milwaukee signed the former Angels/Tigers prospect to a split big league deal this winter after Rodriguez spent the past season-plus pitching in Japan. Rodriguez, Tyler Alexander, Chad Patrick and Rule 5 pick Connor Thomas are all multi-inning options who’ll help cover for a depleted starting staff in Milwaukee.

Losing Civale would sting even with an otherwise full contingent of starters. The 29-year-old righty was traded from Tampa Bay to Milwaukee early last July and, after some early struggles with the Rays, righted the ship to post a 3.53 ERA, 20.9% strikeout rate and 8% walk rate in 74 innings for the Brewers over the final three months of the year. Civale is the rare pitcher who couldn’t seem to get on track with the Rays, but he has a solid track record in Cleveland and pitched well in Milwaukee last year. He entered the season with a 4.03 ERA in 636 1/3 career innings at the MLB level, including sub-4.00 ERA marks in both 2021 and 2023.

Civale had a shaky spring, however, and his 2025 debut was anything but up to his prior standard. He pitched just three innings and was gouged for five runs against the Yankees. His 91.4 mph average sinker velocity was down more than a mile per hour over his 2024 average, and his lesser-used four-seamer was also down about a half mile per hour. Much of the focus from that weekend series is on the Yankees’ new “torpedo” or “bowling pin” bats, but Civale appears to have been operating at less than 100% and will now be shelved for at least the next two weeks.

Brewers Acquire Grant Anderson

The Rangers announced they’ve traded reliever Grant Anderson to the Brewers for minor league pitcher Mason Molina. Milwaukee designated left-hander Tyler Jay for assignment to open a 40-man roster spot, according to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Texas had designated the 27-year-old Anderson for assignment earlier in the week when they finalized the Joc Pederson deal. The low-slot righty has made 49 MLB appearances for the Rangers as an up-and-down reliever. His major league work hasn’t been great, as he has allowed 6.35 earned runs per nine over 62 1/3 innings. Anderson’s respective strikeout (21.5%) and walk (8.8%) rates aren’t far off league average. He has had massive home run issues, though, giving up 16 longballs (2.31 per nine innings) in his major league career.

That hasn’t been as big a problem in the minors. Anderson didn’t allow a single homer over 27 2/3 Triple-A innings this year. He fanned 28.3% of minor league opponents and turned in a sub-3.00 ERA in the Pacific Coast League. Anderson has a 3.87 mark over parts of three seasons for the organization’s top affiliate in Round Rock.

Anderson still has a minor league option remaining, so Milwaukee can keep him at Triple-A Nashville for another season. The Brewers have Trevor Megill, Joel Payamps, Nick Mears and Jared Koenig locked into the Opening Day bullpen. Milwaukee could carry Rule 5 pick Connor Thomas in long relief. That’d only leave a couple ’pen spots up for grabs if everyone is healthy, so the flexibility afforded by the option is valuable.

Milwaukee acquired Jay from the Mets in July. The 30-year-old southpaw was limited to two MLB appearances after the deal. He tossed three scoreless innings with three walks and strikeouts apiece. Jay had pitched five times for New York earlier in the year, his first taste of big league action.

A former top 10 pick of the Twins, Jay has spent seven seasons in the minor leagues. He had a productive year in Triple-A between the New York and Milwaukee systems, combining for a 3.02 earned run average through 56 2/3 innings. He struck out a slightly below-average 20.5% of opponents while showing excellent control (5.1% walk rate). Milwaukee will trade Jay or put him on waivers within the next five days.

Molina, 21, was Milwaukee’s seventh-round pick last summer. The Arkansas product threw five scoreless innings in Low-A during his initial professional action. The 6’2″ lefty had turned in a 4.47 ERA over 15 appearances (13 starts) for the Razorbacks in his junior season. Baseball America wrote at the time of the draft that Molina’s 89-90 MPH fastball plays above its velocity because of its life at the top of the zone. Molina’s command is a work in progress. He’s a low minors developmental flier for the Rangers.

The Rangers announced they’ve designated reliever Grant Anderson for assignment. The move opens the necessary 40-man roster spot for Joc Pederson, who has officially signed his $37MM free agent deal.

Rangers Place Josh Sborz On 15-Day Injured List

6:21PM: Two sources tell Jeff Wilson of Rangers Today that Sborz’s strain “isn’t severe,” and there is even some hope that Sborz might only miss the minimum 15 days.

4:38PM: The Rangers announced that right-hander Josh Sborz has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a strain his right rotator cuff.  Righty Grant Anderson has been called up from Triple-A to take Sborz’s spot on the roster.

The transaction isn’t a surprise considering how Sborz made an early exit from his appearance in last night’s Astros/Rangers game.  Sborz retired the first two batters he faced in the eighth inning, but was then in discomfort after tossing his second pitch to his third batter, and departed the game after consulting with trainers.

Sborz in his fourth season with Texas, beginning with 59 innings of 3.97 ball in 2021.  He followed that season up by posting a 5.79 ERA over 74 2/3 frames in 2022-23, though a 3.06 SIERA in that same span makes the case that Sborz has been one of baseball’s more unlucky pitchers of in recent years.  Sborz had an unusually low 59.9% strand rate, and he had an unfortunate tendency to allow homers in inopportune times.  However, his fortunes turned around at the best possible time, as Sborz had a sterling 0.75 ERA across 12 postseason innings during the Rangers’ World Series championship run last fall.

As such, he entered 2024 as one of the Rangers’ primary high-leverage options in front of closer Jose Leclerc, but Sborz will now miss some time on the IL.  The extent of the strain and whether or not surgery could be on the table isn’t yet known, and it is possible Sborz might have avoided anything that would sideline him for an overly lengthy amount of time.  This placement represents Sborz’s sixth trip to the IL since the start of the 2022 season, as he has previously missed time due to some elbow problems in 2022, and some relatively less serious hamstring, ankle, and biceps issues last season.

Rangers Select Grant Anderson, Designate Ricky Vanasco

The Rangers announced they’ve selected reliever Grant Anderson onto the MLB roster. Texas optioned southpaw Cody Bradford to Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move. To create a spot on the 40-man roster, the Rangers designated minor league righty Ricky Vanasco for assignment.

Anderson, 25, gets a big league call for the first time. He was selected by the Mariners in the 21st round of the 2018 draft, signing for $50K out of McNeese State. The following spring, Texas acquired Anderson in an intra-division trade that sent hard-throwing reliever Connor Sadzeck to Seattle. Anderson has climbed the ranks of the Rangers’ system since then, first reaching the upper minors in 2021.

Over the past two years, Anderson has bounced between Double-A Frisco and Round Rock. He’s spent the majority of 2023 at the top minor league level, frequently working multiple innings of relief. Anderson has tossed 21 1/3 frames over 11 appearances for the Express, posting a 3.80 ERA in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

More impressive has been Anderson’s ability to miss bats this year. He’s punched out an eye-popping 43.2% of opposing hitters, the highest rate among 280 Triple-A pitchers with 20+ innings. Even with an elevated 11.4% walk rate, Anderson has racked up enough strikeouts to get a spot in Bruce Bochy’s bullpen. Texas’ major league relief corps has been light on whiffs, ranking 25th with a 22.3% strikeout rate. A middling bullpen has been the only real question mark for  a club that leads the AL West with a 33-19 record and has outscored opponents by an MLB-best 124 runs.

In order to add Anderson to the major league club, Texas runs the risk of losing a young pitcher who was somewhat recently among their better prospects. Vanasco appeared among Baseball America’s top 25 minor league talents in a quality farm system each year from 2020-22. Praised for a mid-upper 90s fastball and a pair of quality breaking pitches, Vanasco was thrown off track by 2021 Tommy John surgery. He returned to start 21 games in High-A last year but was again delayed early this season by a Spring Training knee injury that required surgery.

Vansaco recently returned from the minor league injured list but has been blown up for ten runs in 2 1/3 innings over two starts in Frisco. That costs him the 40-man roster spot he first secured over the 2021-22 offseason when Texas added him to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft. They’ll now have a week to trade him or try to run him through waivers.

The 24-year-old still has yet to reach Triple-A, much less appear in the majors. He owns a 3.84 ERA with a 30.9% strikeout rate over 178 career minor league frames. Vansaco is in his second of three option years and could draw some interest from other teams based on his previous prospect standing.
