Rangers Sign Joc Pederson

By Nick Deeds | December 30, 2024 at 4:20pm CDT

The Rangers have officially announced the signing of designated hitter Joc Pederson to a two-year deal with a mutual option for 2027. Pederson, a client of Excel Sports Management, can opt out of the contract after next season. He’s reportedly guaranteed $37MM.

Pederson, 32, has now signed his fifth consecutive contract that allows him to re-enter free agency after just one year. The slugger first reached free agency during the 2020-21 offseason and signed a one-year deal with the Cubs. He followed that up with a one-year deal with the Giants before accepting the Qualifying Offer from the club the following offseason, and most recently signed yet another one-year pact with the Diamondbacks last winter. His newest deal offers a bit more security, however, given that it comes with a player option for a second season.

The constant trips through free agency haven’t stopped Pederson from being one of the most productive lefty bats in the majors in recent years. Since making his second career All-Star appearance in 2022 as a member of the Giants, Pederson has slashed a fantastic .262/.365/.485 with a 135 wRC+. That figure leaves him with the 16th-highest wRC+ in baseball among qualified hitters over the past three seasons, and he’s sandwiched comfortably between Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Jose Ramirez on that leaderboard.

Given that he’s provided superstar-caliber offense on the cheap to multiple teams in recent years, it may seem somewhat surprising for Pederson to wind up with yet another relatively short-term deal that guarantees him less than $20MM per year. That discrepancy is primarily due to Pederson’s extremely limited profile. While he’s a phenomenal hitter who rakes against right-handed pitching, his profile features a massive platoon split and he’s typically been at his best throughout his career when he sits against same-handed pitching as much as possible. He’s a career .210/.300/.330 (78 wRC+) hitter against left-handed pitching and even in the past three seasons has floated a pedestrian 104 wRC+ against southpaws.

Perhaps that on its own wouldn’t be enough to stop Pederson from getting a hefty contract in free agency, but he’s also a poor defender in the outfield who didn’t put on a glove a single time during his year in Arizona after starting just 23 games in the outfield in San Francisco the prior year. His last season as a regular on defense in 2022 saw Pederson struggle to a -11 Outs Above Average figure that landed him near the bottom of the league’s leaderboards. Even with prodigious hitting talent, Pederson’s earning power has been consistently limited on the open market due to relatively minimal upside available in signing a platoon bat who’s increasingly restricted to DH-only duties. With that context, Pederson actually did quite well in landing the deal he got from the Rangers; his $37MM guarantee significantly outpaces the two-year, $24MM pact MLBTR predicted he would land when placing him as the #24 free agent on our Top 50 MLB Free Agents list at the outset of the winter.

For the Rangers, the addition of Pederson offers some much-needed thump to a lineup that finished just 22nd in the majors with a 95 wRC+ last year. That includes utterly abysmal production at DH, where Texas managed just a 65 wRC+ that was second-worst in baseball ahead of only the Reds. The addition of Pederson not only adds another big lefty bat to the Rangers lineup to complement his former Dodgers teammate Corey Seager but also makes up for the loss of Nathaniel Lowe, who the club traded to the Nationals just last night. The additions of Pederson, Kyle Higashioka, and Jake Burger to the club’s lineup in conjunction with better health from youngsters Josh Jung and Evan Carter should give the Rangers a much stronger offense up and down the batting order while allowing the club to lean less heavily on utility man Josh Smith, who was one of the team’s top offensive contributors in the first half but faded to hit just .215/.265/.300 after the All-Star break.

With Pederson now in the fold, RosterResource projects the Rangers for a payroll of just under $217MM for 2025, and that figure jumps up to just over $229MM for luxury tax purposes. That leaves around $11MM left for the club to work with before the first luxury tax threshold, which it was reported earlier this winter that the club hopes to duck under next year. While the rotation was addressed by bringing back Nathan Eovaldi and the lineup appears to be in good shape at the moment, the club still appears to be a piece or two short in the bullpen even after adding Hoby Milner, Jacob Webb, and Robert Garcia. It’s possible the Rangers could look to follow the example they laid out in the deal that sent Lowe to D.C. in exchange for Garcia and deal a potential trade candidate like Leody Taveras, Dane Dunning, or Jon Gray in a deal that bolsters their relief corps while also freeing up payroll space that could help them land a proven closer such as Kirby Yates or David Robertson, both of whom pitched well for the Rangers in 2024 but elected free agency last month.

Now that Pederson is headed to Texas, a handful of other suitors will need to look elsewhere. The incumbent Diamondbacks reportedly had interest in a reunion with Pederson earlier this month, though it’s possible that the club’s recent trade for Josh Naylor eliminated that need and leaves them in position instead to look for some right-handed thump to replace outgoing first baseman Christian Walker. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays were connected to both Pederson and Naylor in the rumor mill and at this point could be further motivated to land a notable bat such as Anthony Santander or Teoscar Hernandez now that many of the club’s lower-level targets have come off the board.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News was first to report the Rangers and Pederson were discussing a contract. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal was first with the agreement. ESPN’s Buster Olney reported the two-year, $37MM guarantee and the opt-out.

I had him and Jesse Winker for the Yanks in LF as my doomsday last resort if Profar, Santander, etc. were off the table. He’s a butcher in LF, and I don’t know if he’s ever been tried at 1b but wouldn’t want him there either way. I considered him because he destroyed righties and had been thru post-season batteries and had 2 WS victories. The money shocks me a bit, though, especially because of his defensive liabilities. A bit odd that they cleared money just to overpay for him.

Idk that its an overpay. 16th wrc+ over three years, and hit that mark sitting against lefties. The guy destroys righties. If I’m a playoff team, I want that in my lineup. There happens to be a position that doesn’t require a mitt.

Yeah Judgez Dominguez and Bellinger with Grisham as the 4th outfielder makes sense. Chisholm can also play the outfield if needed and maybe Stanton in a pinch. It’s certainly a downgrade without Soto but still a good outfield.

If you only want him for the playoffs, then trade for him at the deadline.

He’s strictly a platoon DH who will be pinch hit for against any team with a lefty available in the bullpen after the 5th inning.

Awful lot of coin for that role imo.

But, good for him, I’ve always liked him and he absolutely mashes RHPs

They allegedly made Santana a deal worth more guaranteed money than Cleveland, which included a player-option for 2026.

Seattle hasn’t spent much on free agent bats, but this deal wasn’t out of reach. The questions, at least for me, is if they were even interested and how much more than that would it have taken.

This is one that should sting for Mariner fans. Not only did they not get him, and you’re right that they could afford the 16m AAV, it’s that he goes to a division rival.

        Correction: the 18.5m AAV.

But they would need to move at least part of Haniger s or Garver’s contract to do that and usually we see those kinds of deals earlier.

If the ownership group went hiking for three weeks, no phones, and came back to this they should fire Chris Young on the spot, figuring the 2023 WS was a fluke and an inheritance. I mean, why wait?

He likely isn’t taking ABs from Burger, platoon split with Evan Carter at DH. I’d say Carter can pick up ABs in the OF too.

It’s a good add for the Rangers, their lineup looks stacked to me. They have some good prospects too.

All rides on the arm on DeGrom. I’d make them the favorite to win the AL West assuming DeGrom gives them a full season.

Carter bats from the left side, and will have every opportunity to start in the OF. This season will be about what they get out of young guys like Langford and Carter. Anything they get from Degrom is extra.

Error on this commentor, they slotted Carter in at CF and moved Tavares to the bench. They have a good mix of lefties and righties, have good depth on the offensive side of the ball.

Its their veterans that make their lineup dangerous, Seager/Semien/Pederson/Garcia/Burger is pretty nice at the top.

I can agree though, the bottom of the lineup can win them games Langford/Carter/Jung/Heim. A lot of power in that lineup.

DeGrom isnt necessarily their lynchpin but he isn’t an extra either. The Rangers have good depth in their rotation, have good options should one of their starters blow up or go to the IR, but DeGrom healthy is a big difference maker.

DeGrom won’t give them a full season. Do the Rangers win the West if DeGrom manages 12 starts? 18? Or is it still the Astros? And how will the Mariners miss the playoffs by 1-2 games?

Preseason favorite sans DeGrom as the rosters sit right now still the Rangers but I’m moving Rocker into the rotation and Dane Dunning is going to be pouty about it.

The Astros pitching is more enviable on paper than the Rangers sans DeGrom – Rocker is a big unknown quantity. Could be the big deal, could be the refrigerator. I don’t he is a complete donkey so is reasonable to fall back on Dunning/Rocker/Leiter.

Astros OF can’t hit, Mariners have some big holes too.

I don’t know much about elbow surgery, advances in elbow surgery seem to have improved pitchers ability to extend their careers post injury, DeGrom has had plenty of work done on that elbow, I’d say it’s his last hurrah. If it blows out again will be difficult. Difficult to put a probability on that you’dike to see him throw a good 150 IPs into the playoffs.

Curious to see the contract details (not released at the time of me posting this).. my first thought is, wherever Joc can fill for your team, Lowe can do the exact same and his cost is surely gonna be in a similar ballpark. And don’t get me wrong, I love Joc, but wouldn’t you rather have Lowe? Personally I would. At least I’d play Lowe at first and keep his gold glove defense and bat and whatever log jam I was fearing I’d DH for the time being but I would trade Lowe for garbage and what appeared to be a small salary dump due to a positional log jams, just to go sign a freaking DH only who would roughly cost the same and hits in the same network. Idk.

On another know, if your a Yankees fan, you got to be a little upset that Lowe was traded for dirt cheap and is a little cheaper and better than what yall ultimately got in PG. maybe PG bounces back to his old self a little but gosh… I’d want Lowe over PG in NY all day considering each of their cost

Idk. Maybe they view Garcia as a closer and feel they got multiple years of a back end guy for one year of a guy at what seems to be becoming baseballs least valuable position.

I’m not suggesting I agree with that thought process, just throwing darts at what theirs might be.

I do prefer Joc in my lineup, at least about 2/3’s of the time anyway. My preference would have been Lowe at 1B, Joc at DH and not bring in Berger

How about them Austin Devil Rays? They can’t be the Rays anymore if they move to Austin. Hope they stay in Tampa. Austin isn’t a baseball town, it’s a houligan town.

Offensively, Pederson is miles better than Lowe. Yes, they lose some defense with the step down from Lowe to Burger, but the power upgrade with both of these guys is big

Burger costs very little and provides cover in the DH slot for Pederson against lefties. He can also play first base, though not too well. I have no problems with the acquisition.

Lowe was going to cost $10+ million this season and would be looking for an extension the Rangers weren’t going to give him. Burger/Smith/Duran will be perfectly fine at 1B, and they added a bunch of power with both of Burger and Pederson.

Basically, the Rangers are switching from Lowe to Pederson, plus an extra arm in the bullpen. So they probably improved their offense – Pederson put up a .908 OPS in 2024 compared to Lowe’s .762 – and they shored up the pen. All in all, I can’t complain as a Rangers fan. The team can always cover first base with some combination of Burger, Smith and Duran, assuming they keep all those guys.

Maybe the team will make another trade for a low-cost reliever, with Taveras and/or Duran as the trade bait.

I think Foscue may fit into the new equation. He was obviously terrible in a short stint last year, but he’s been a good hitter in the minors. He could DH against lefties and spell Burger

I don’t know about Foscue’s fit. Burger and Pederson have the DH slot covered from both sides of the plate. The infield now has Jung, Seager, Semien, Burger, Smith and Duran. Tough to see how to wedge Foscue in there, especially because he didn’t wow anybody in his 2024 audition. He may be most valuable as part of a trade package for another reliever.

Burger going to go off next season. I’m telling you, he raked in Miami’s paltry offense. He is going to get pitches to hit in the Rangers lineup, big-time hitter Jake Burger.

Burger could be good for 40 HRs with 550 ABs.

Here’s the problem. Pederson’s not remotely a projectable .908 OPS hitter while Lowe won’t have any trouble holding serve on GG defense—and on top of giving Joc 37m, Chris Young gave up actual talent for a 0.5 WAR slugger in Burger who is in steep decline and going on 29.

This is unreal. This is the Mets-Steve Phillips era. If Chris Young is being credited with the 2023 WS in Texas, he’s going to be very difficult to get rid of, and if these are the kinds of moves he makes you may not get back to the postseason until he’s gone unless you can ride in the next year or two on the talent accumulated before he arrived.

This is AWFUL. These are the kinds of moves that have knowledgeable fans talking about lynching those responsible

Pederson’s got an .848 career OPS against righties and he’s moving to a good home run hitters park. I’m not betting the house on a .900 OPS from him in 2025, but I can believe in a .850 number. Which would be fine with me.

I also don’t buy Lowe’s gold glove. Baseball Reference and Fangraphs give him really bad defensive marks. From the eye test he is at best ordinary at first. The GG seems highly suspect.

The same home run park that should benefit Pederson will also help Burger. All in all, I’m felling a lot better about the Rangers lineup in 2025 with the extra thump.

Signing Goldy eliminates the possibility of him returning to 1b. I’m not sure about Profar for 3b. My guess is, if he played 3b, it was a long time ago and not something anyone wants to revisit. Yanks had about $81 come off the books. They have yet to exceed last years payroll. Bregman might still be in play, but the question isn’t so much about the contract but the draft penalties, in my opinion. I would not be shocked if they bit the bullet of other options fell thru. I can’t see them going with a DJ/Cabrera pain in the IF. Outside options could be trading for Arenando. Many think he might wave his no-trade to rejoin recently signed buddy, Goldy. An even more interesting teammates reunion works be too trade for Luis Arraez and rejoin him with Jazz. I saw a video where the two were very close friends from their time in Miami. I would love to see them batting 1-2 with Jazz leading off. I think that’s an easy run scored every time Jazz gets on base to lead off the inning.

Along with what the supposed reason for this difference is this year. I just think there is a potential for some articles (or yearly articles and yearly comparisons) here.

Mystery: Boras is using Toronto for their top preferences of Burnes and Santander. Neither wants to go there to be on a last place team unless they can’t get a close offer elsewhere. They can certainly pivot to overpaying lower tier guys like Pivetta or Profar who would be quicker to take their money, but that doesn’t seem wise.

@wu tang killa beez We have a pretty good idea, anyway.

      2020 to 2023: .243/.331/.447 for a 113 OPS+, with brutal corner OF defense.

1.8 bWAR in 1477 PA, but teh 63 HRZZZ!

Anyone who doesn’t understand how Pete Alonso’s career is likely to crash and burn only needs to look at Joc’s slash line over those four years: .240/.329/.459 for a .788 OPS. Pete’s hit in tougher parks, but the template is the same. Very bad defense at an easy position to play, decent power but nothing special

Joc fluked his way through 2024 with a BABIP 50 points higher than his 2019-2023. The chance he crashes to Earth and gives the foolish Rangers replacement level performance is very high. Not only that, he’ll exercise the player option. $37m for a projectable 1 win or so? Wow.

Funny thing about Lowe. He won a gold glove at first but Baseball Reference is down on his glove. I mean, really down. -4.3 dWAR for his career.

I’ve seen a lot of Lowe at first. He looks competent but hardly spectacular. Is there gonna be a big drop-off in the infield defense because of his departure? I doubt it. So I’ll take the offensive upgrade with Pederson, while the Rangers can cover first with Burger and Smith.

@Ignorant Son-of-a-b Just so. It’s an absurd deal. 2/37m AND an opt out for a guy who just had a good, not great season as a platoon DH, his first good season in FIVE bloody years?

His 2024 was also built around significant good luck on balls in play. Is it that people don’t understand even the basics of looking at underlying numbers? A BABIP 50 points higher than his career number, his 2019-2023 number, and 40 points higher than his 2021-2023 BABIP makes it a fair certainty he won’t come all that close to his 2024 numbers, and that’s on top of the chunky dude turning 33.

Do the Rangers know about this thing called “luck”?

EV a little worse than in 2022-23, Hard Hit rate way down in 2024… but the Rangers just had to dump Lowe, who is far more likely to have the better 2025-2026, and pick up Pederson?

Chris Young is not impressing this offseason

Based on where salaries are going I don’t think it is a big overpay. I wonder if he was asking for a 3 or 4 year deal

Good for him. Glad to see he got 2 years this time perhaps a settled down spot at 32. Texas has great BBQ and a dome. What more could a guy want.

Yes. He won’t be a dud though. He does always seem to produce to a degree consistent.

If you’re a Rangers fan, you’d want a new GM.

This is so abysmal. “A career year at 32? Sure, let’s give the platoon DH 2/37m!!”

Joc should consider hitting from the right side against lefties.

Looks like he averages 130 to 135 games a year.

A platoon D.H. only guy that hit .265 and the author is surprised he did not get $20m per season? I saw him in AAA at Albuquerque and he was an amazing CF, but now he is older and put on much weight. Overpaid in my opinion.

I don’t think the Jays can sign Teoscar Hernandez. Didn’t the Dodgers already do that?

    “Given that he’s provided superstar-caliber offense.. ”

Sheer idiocy. He’s a platoon geek, 2/3 of a DH who should never take the field or face LHP. and is confined to around 400 PA a season. But, sure, let’s pretend he’ll probably repeat a .322 or even a .310 BABIP in 2025-2026 as a 33-34 yo.

He’s beaten 1.4 bWAR ONCE in 5 years.

2/37m?? You deserve what you’re oh-so likely to get.
