Heyman On Andruw, Pedro, Crede, Grudz

The latest from SI.com’s Jon Heyman

  • The Yankees offered a minor league deal to Andruw Jones, which he turned down.  Other teams "thought to have interest": the Rangers, Phillies, Braves, and Mets.
  • Heyman thinks Pedro Martinez makes a lot of sense for the Dodgers.  However, Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times learned from Ned Colletti on January 6th that the Dodgers weren’t among the teams pursuing Pedro.
  • Jason Varitek‘s camp (ie, Scott Boras) apparently has no regrets about rejecting arbitration since it wouldn’t have been a guaranteed contract.
  • Chad Cordero‘s next showcase is scheduled for February 19th.
  • Heyman has the Twins as favorites over the Giants to sign Joe Crede.  More on Crede here.
  • Heyman says the Yankees feel they’re more likely to find a deal for Nick Swisher than Xavier Nady.
  • Add Mark Grudzielanek to the list of right-handed hitters the Phillies are considering (Nomar Garciaparra, Rich Aurilia, and Moises Alou being the others).

Odds and Ends: Crede, Jays, Howard

Joe Crede Workout

SUNDAY: Christensen says that the Twins will check Crede’s progress again this week. He couldn’t get another update on Crede heading into the weekend.

THURSDAY: Christensen heard Crede looked good at the workout and drew new contract offers (none from the Twins).  Crede apparently wants a base salary above the $5.1MM he earned last year, plus incentives.  Jon Heyman confirms the Giants’ attendance.

WEDNESDAY: According to Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Joe Crede worked out for scouts in Arizona today.  The Twins were apparently in attendance.  We’ll update the post if more attendees are revealed; the Giants were supposed to be there according to Nick Cafardo.

Giants Sign Juan Uribe

10:47pm: Ken Rosenthal’s source says the Giants’ Uribe signing will not affect their pursuit of Crede.

2:58pm: According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Giants signed infielder Juan Uribe to a minor league deal potentially worth about $1MM.  Not sure if this affects the team’s interest in Joe Crede.

Uribe, 30 in March, hit .247/.296/.386 for the White Sox in 353 plate appearances last year while playing second base, third base, and a little bit of shortstop.  Based on the plus/minus system, his defense has been below-average in recent years.

Twins Hot Stove Update: Ayala, Crede

Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune has a few updates on the Twins’ hot stove:

  • The club has had discussions with free agent reliever Luis Ayala, who finished with a 5.71 ERA in 81 appearances for the Nationals and Mets last season.
  • The Twins had two scouts at Joe Crede‘s workout on Wednesday.  Christensen writes that "it sounds like they need to see him more times before they’ll feel safe investing millions of guaranteed money."

Pirates Interested In Braden Looper

Let’s gather up assorted pieces of Pirates information from Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from the past few days…

  • We already knew about Pedro Martinez; Kovacevic says the Pirates also have an eye on free agent starter Braden Looper.  The Dodgers and D’Backs are other teams in the market for the 34 year-old hurler.  Team president Frank Coonelly says free agents are "still asking for prices based on yesterday’s market."
  • Kovacevic suggests the Pirates may sign another bench player soon, someone other than fan favorite Doug Mientkiewicz.
  • GM Neal Huntington ruled out free agents Rich Aurilia, Joe Crede, and Kevin Millar.  Still, Coonelly expects the Pirates to sign more players, ones that fans "would fall in love with."
  • Huntington says there are no current trade talks for shortstop Jack Wilson.

Cafardo’s Latest: Crede, Gagne, Rangers, Brewers

Some quick notes from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe:

  • The Twins and Giants will be monitoring Joe Crede‘s workouts in Arizona next week. Both teams have had ongoing interest this month.
  • The Twins and Rangers are continuing to seriously consider Eric Gagne.
  • Cafardo notes the growing sentiment among middle-market teams that patience could land an all star caliber player for a "low-risk one-year deal."
  • Milwaukee would prefer to save and make a "Sabathia-like" deadline deal rather than spend now.
  • Adam Melhuse signing with Texas could be a signal that Taylor Teagarden or Jarrod Saltalamacchia are en route to the Red Sox. Cafardo cautions that’s probably not the case since the Rangers have not come down on their asking price of Clay Buchholz.
  • Watch for the Cubs to reengage the Padres and Jake Peavy now that they have found an owner in billionaire Tom Ricketts.

Crede, Gagne Twins Talks Held Up?

A few people have sent in this link from Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, which contains one Twins hot stove line:

The word is that length of contract is holding up the Twins’ signing of former White Sox third baseman Joe Crede and relief pitcher Eric Gagne.

The implication is that the two Scott Boras clients are seeking more than one year, which would be a surprise.  If the Twins do get Crede, he’ll be one of just a handful of players to make the Chicago-Minnesota jump.

Twins Rumors: Crede, Gagne, Springer

La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune checks in with the latest on the Twins.

  • Free agent third baseman Joe Crede will work out for scouts next week, and the Twins are expected to attend.  Neal’s source says Crede believes he’s finally overcome his back problems with a minor surgery this winter.  He’s willing to sign for one year to re-establish himself.
  • Brandon Lyon and Eric Gagne remain in the Twins’ sights, with the Twins "swapping offers" with Scott Boras for Gagne.
  • Neal was able to confirm a rumor first reported by Seth Stohs: the Twins have interest in Russ Springer.

Third Base Remains A Mystery For Twins

According to MLB.com’s Kelly Thesier, the Twins are preparing to head into spring training with a third base platoon of Brian Buscher and Brendan Harris.

The Twins have made a few attempts to snag a strong third baseman this offseason, but all talks have fallen flat.  They pursued Casey Blake before he signed with the Dodgers, and Mark DeRosa before he was sent off to the Indians.

Joe Crede remains a free agent, but the Twins might not want to throw money at a guy with chronic back problems.  The 30-year-old played only 97 games last season, finishing with a .248 average on top of 17 home runs and 55 RBI.
