Jordan Pacheco

D’Backs To Re-Sign Jordan Pacheco

By Zachary Links | December 25, 2014 at 7:25am CDT

The Diamondbacks will re-sign Jordan Pacheco to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, a source tells Chris Cotillo of SB Nation (via Twitter).

Arizona claimed the infielder/catcher off waivers from the Rockies back in June.  Pacheco, 29 in January, was outrighted in November, but the club made it known soon after that they were hoping to retain him.

Though he hasn’t set the world on fire offensively, he does offer contact skills and defensive versatility.  Over the last few years, he has seen significant time at catcher, first base, and third base.  In 2012, he posted a .309/.341/.421 slash line (good for a 93 OPS+) across 505 plate appearances.  Since then, however, he has slashed just .245/.285/.320.

Pacheco is represented by the Beverly Hills Sports Council, as shown in the MLBTR Agency Database.

West Notes: Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Kennedy

By charliewilmoth | November 8, 2014 at 4:20pm CDT

The Dodgers’ new front office led by Andrew Friedman is perceived as likely to be statistically driven, but new GM Farhan Zaidi says the Dodgers need to excel at all methods of evaluation, Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports. “We need to be the best at everything,” says Zaidi. “I don’t think we’re in a position to make trade-offs of saying we’re a stat organization or a scouting organization.” Zaidi adds that he expects decision-making in Los Angeles to be collaborative. He, Friedman and senior vice president Josh Byrnes will all engage in talks with agents and with other teams. Here are more notes from the West divisions.

  • On Thursday, Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall chatted with fans on Twitter, and the results are available in a single document at MLB.com. Hall says starting pitching will be the team’s top priority this winter, and he adds that the Diamondbacks hope to retain infielder Jordan Pacheco despite outrighting him this week. Arizona claimed Pacheco from the Rockies in June, and he hit .272/.298/.321 in 85 plate appearances down the stretch.
  • Ian Kennedy had a bounce-back season in 2014 with the Padres and now is a top trade asset, writes Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune. A move out of Arizona and into a friendlier ballpark was one factor (particularly given Kennedy’s fly ball tendencies), but Sanders feels pitching coach Darren Balsley’s work with Kennedy might have been just as crucial. Balsey’s mechanical changes helped Kennedy boost his velocity — Kennedy’s average fastball increased from 90.3MPH to 91.8MPH last season. Sanders suggests that one alternative to a trade might be for the Padres to extend the reliable Kennedy rather than Andrew Cashner, who had neck, shoulder and elbow issues in 2014.

Diamondbacks Outright Jordan Pacheco

By Jeff Todd | November 4, 2014 at 11:38pm CDT

Here are the day’s outrights and minor moves:

  • The Diamondbacks have outrighted catcher/corner infielder Jordan Pacheco, per the MLB.com transactions page. Entering his age-29 season next year, Pacheco has not produced at the plate outside of a Coors Field-aided run in 2012, when he managed a 93 OPS+. He is, however, a fairly versatile player, as he is capable of playing at least passable defense behind the dish and in the corner infield. Over 165 plate appearances split between the Rockies and D’backs last year, Pacheco slashed .255/.299/.333.

Diamondbacks Claim Jordan Pacheco From Rockies

By Jeff Todd | June 12, 2014 at 12:27pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have claimed infielder/catcher Jordan Pacheco off waivers from the Rockies, reports Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com (via Twitter). Pacheco, 28, was designated and then placed on outright waivers recently by Colorado.

Pacheco is best known for his defensive versatility and contact skills. He has seen significant time at catcher, third, and first with the Rockies over recent seasons. And in 2012, he posted a sturdy .309/.341/.421 triple-slash over 505 plate appearances. Those numbers have turned south recently, however, as Pacheco owns only a .238/.282/.320 line over the last two seasons.

As MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes reported back in March, Pacheco is out of options. Arizona is currently relying on Tuffy Gosewisch as the primary backup to Miguel Montero behind the dish, though the 30-year-old has seen only 37 plate appearances (slashing an underwhelming .194/.216/.306).

Jordan Pacheco On Outright Waivers

By Jeff Todd | June 10, 2014 at 1:35pm CDT

JUNE 10: Pacheco is currently on outright waivers and will learn his fate in the next 48 hours, reports MLB Daily Dish’s Chris Cotillo (Twitter link). Any team will have the option to claim him (in order of reverse record starting with the NL and then moving to the AL). If not, the Rockies will be able to assign him outright to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

JUNE 4: The Rockies have designated catcher/infielder Jordan Pacheco for assignment, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post (via Twitter). Fellow backstop Michael McKenry will take his roster spot, while the club will also promote infielder Ryan Wheeler with star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez hitting the DL.

Pacheco, 28, has been a mainstay on the Colorado roster for much of the last two seasons, largely due to his defensive flexibility. He saw plenty of time at third in 2012, starting 80 times there and 35 times across the diamond, but last year played mostly at first while also shifting behind the dish at times. Entering 2014 as the reserve backstop, Pacheco has been limited to just 175 1/3 innings in the field thus far, and has taken only one start at a different position.

On the offensive side of the ledger, Pacheco has been unable to follow up on his solid 2012 campaign (.309/.341/.421 in 505 plate appearances). He struggled to a .588 OPS last year, and has slashed .236/.300/.347 through 80 plate appearances in 2014. Of course, all of those numbers reflect time spent at Coors Field; Pacheco’s lifetime wRC+ stands at just 76.
