Ian Desmond Drawing Trade Interest

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 1, 2010 at 2:09pm CDT

Ian Desmond is drawing strong trade interest, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The Nationals want starters and, other than Cliff Lee and Carl Pavano, the free agent pitching class has thinned out considerably. The free agent shortstop class is similarly weak, so Desmond is in demand.

Washington isn’t looking to trade Desmond, but they could part with him for a young pitcher with comparable service time, Rosenthal says. The 25-year-old batted .269/.308/.392 in 2010, his first full season. With just over one year of service time to his name, Desmond is still five years away from free agency.

Indians To Sign Drew Pomeranz

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 16, 2010 at 10:56pm CDT

The Indians agreed to sign fifth-overall selection Drew Pomeranz on a $2.65MM deal, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (Twitter links). The 6'5" left-hander turns 22 this fall. The Rangers drafted Pomeranz in the 12th round of the 2007, but he chose to attend Mississippi instead. Last year MLB recommended a $2.52MM bonus for the fifth-overall selection.

The Indians also signed second-rounder LeVon Washington and third-rounder Tony Wolters, according to Hoynes. ESPN.com's Keith Law says the Indians and Wolters agreed to a $1.35MM deal (Twitter link).

No Deal Yet For Indians, LeVon Washington

By Tim Dierkes | June 8, 2010 at 4:30pm CDT

4:30pm: Indians assistant GM John Mirabelli told MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo that there is no deal.

"We absolutely do not have any agreements across the board," he said.

3:44pm: Heyman says the deal isn't quite complete (Twitter link) and notes that over-slot deals like Washington's don't often become official until closer to the August deadline for signing picks.

3:00pm: The Indians reached an agreement with second-round pick LeVon Washington for $1.55MM, tweets SI's Jon Heyman.  The Indians drafted the outfielder 55th overall; he'd gone to the Rays at #30 out of high school in 2009 but turned down their offer of $1.1MM and attended Chipola Junior College.  Washington is represented by Scott Boras.

MLB.com outlined the knocks on Washington – he might not have the arm to stick in center field, and he comes with a "perceived lack of energy."  On the plus side, he brings offense and above average speed.  Baseball America ranked Washington 66th overall, considering him an enigma who earned Johnny Damon comparisons before the '09 draft but had a disappointing year at junior college.
