Diamondbacks Sign Lyle Overbay

By Steve Adams | December 9, 2011 at 4:10pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with first baseman Lyle Overbay on a one-year deal worth $1MM, the team has announced.  Overbay is represented by Octagon.

Overbay began last year in Pittsburgh on a one-year deal worth $5MM, but was released after batting just .227/.300/.349. He latched on with the Diamondbacks down the stretch and hit a solid .286/.388/.452 in 49 plate appearances.

Jon Heyman of the MLB Network was the first to announce the two sides had agreed to terms.  Jack Magruder of FOX Sports Arizona first reported that the D'Backs had made an offer, while MLB.com's Steve Gilbert added that the two sides were nearing a deal.

D’Backs Closing In On Deal With Lyle Overbay

By Luke Adams 2 | December 6, 2011 at 10:24pm CDT

10:24pm: No deal is done yet, but the two sides are thought to be discussing a contract worth about $1MM, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

9:20pm: The Diamondbacks didn't get a definitive yes or no from Lyle Overbay on their latest contract offer, but the two sides appear to be working toward completing a deal, reports MLB.com's Steve Gilbert. Overbay and the D'Backs are discussing a one-year contract, and GM Kevin Towers is optimistic about their progress.

"I would say it's progressing well, but it's not done," Towers said. "Everything looks good, although it's not a done deal. I'm cautiously optimistic. We still have some things that we have to work through that we're still working through, but nothing's really changed. My gut is he'll still end up coming here."

NL West Rumors: Saunders, Overbay, Headley

By Luke Adams 2 | December 5, 2011 at 6:18pm CDT

One round of NL West notes wasn't enough for today, so let's do it again:

  • The Diamondbacks have extended a contract offer to Joe Saunders, and it appears to be for two years, tweets Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. GM Kevin Towers says other teams have inquired about Saunders, and that the D'Backs intend to either trade him or sign him to a new deal, rather than go to arbitration (Twitter link).
  • Steve Gilbert of MLB.com says (on Twitter) the Diamondbacks expect to hear tonight whether Lyle Overbay will accept their one-year offer.
  • The Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with Joe Martinez, who will be added to the 40-man roster, tweet Piecoro.
  • MLB.com's Corey Brock (Twitter link) says the Padres are asking for "the moon" for Chase Headley. They could move him, but it will cost a lot if they do.
  • The Padres are looking at Andrew Bailey and several free agent arms to replace Heath Bell, according to Dan Hayes of the North County Times (via Twitter). Hayes adds that the team isn't willing to commit more than two years to any free agent arm (Twitter link).
  • The Rockies' waiver claim of Jamie Hoffmann increases the probability of Ryan Spilborghs being non-tendered, tweets Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com.

D’Backs Have Made Offer To Lyle Overbay

By Mark Polishuk | December 1, 2011 at 5:38pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have an offer on the table to veteran first baseman Lyle Overbay, reports Jack Magruder of Fox Sports Arizona (Twitter link).  It is thought to be a one-year contract and the Snakes expect a response from Overbay's representatives early in the Winter Meetings.

Overbay was thought to be on Arizona's radar when GM Kevin Towers suggested the team wanted a complement to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.  (Overbay is a left-handed hitter while Goldschmidt bats from the right side.)  Overbay, 34, joined the D'Backs in August after being designated for assignment by the Pirates in July.  He hit a combined .234/.310/.360 in 440 plate appearances with Arizona and Pittsburgh last season.

Towers On Hill, Bloomquist, Blanco, Saunders, Parra

By Tim Dierkes | October 11, 2011 at 10:30am CDT

Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers spoke to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic yesterday.  Highlights:

  • Towers would like to bring back second baseman Aaron Hill, but not at his option prices of $8MM for each of the 2012 and '13 seasons.  The 29-year-old hit .315/.386/.492 in 142 plate appearances for Arizona, his first stint in the National League.  He's represented by Beverly Hills Sports Council, as our Agency Database shows.
  • Towers is "leaning toward" exercising Willie Bloomquist's $1.1MM mutual option and will "probably" pick up a $1.15MM mutual option on catcher Henry Blanco.  Piecoro expects both players back, so these might be rare cases where both sides exercise their end of mutual options.
  • The GM is undecided on whether to tender a contract to lefty Joe Saunders, depending on whether he thinks the team's young starters are ready.  Saunders is due a raise on this year's $5.5MM salary, which we'll dig into later this week here at MLBTR.  Towers believes the team has the payroll space for both Hill and Saunders, if that's the route he chooses.  I think Saunders will be tendered a contract, since he'd have some trade value.
  • Left fielder Gerardo Parra's possible Super Two status is "too close to call right now," said Towers.  As of August 23rd, a source told me the cutoff appeared to be two years and 145 days of service, which is the exact amount Parra has.
  • Towers seeks a bat to complement first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, and Piecoro thinks that might mean re-signing Lyle Overbay.
  • Towers feels that the Diamondbacks' pitching staff is in "pretty good shape."  The GM doesn't see "big, big" offseason needs, though he won't rule out a run at the "right kind of marquee guy."

Diamondbacks Sign Lyle Overbay

By Mike Axisa | August 13, 2011 at 3:04pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have signed Lyle Overbay, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter). In a corresponding move, they've placed Xavier Nady on the disabled list after having his hand broken on a hit-by-pitch last night. He'll miss up to six weeks.

The 34-year-old Overbay became a free agent earlier this week when the Pirates cut him loose. He hit just .227/.300/.349 in 391 plate appearances for Pittsburgh, but that's better than what Nady was doing: .248/.287/.359 in 223 plate appearances. The D'Backs could have also turned to Juan Miranda, who is hitting .268/.387/.500 in Triple-A after being outrighted last month.

Overbay started his career with the D'Backs after they took him in the 18th round of the 1999 draft. He hit .271/.357/.391 in parts of three seasons with Arizona before being one of six players they sent to the Brewers for Richie Sexson after the 2003 season. The Diamondbacks will only have to pay Overbay the pro-rated portion of the league minimum, with the Pirates being on the hook for the rest of his $5MM salary.

Diamondbacks Considering Lyle Overbay

By Mike Axisa | August 12, 2011 at 1:59pm CDT

The Diamondbacks lost first baseman Xavier Nady for four-to-six weeks with a broken hand last night, and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says (on Twitter) the team is considering signing Lyle Overbay. Nady suffered the injury on a hit-by-pitch.

The 34-year-old Overbay became a free agent earlier this week when the Pirates cut him loose. He hit just .227/.300/.349 in 391 plate appearances for Pittsburgh, but that's better than what Nady was doing for Arizona: .248/.287/.359 in 223 plate appearances. The D'Backs could also turn to Juan Miranda, who is hitting .268/.387/.500 in Triple-A after being outrighted last month.

Lyle Overbay Hits Free Agency

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 9, 2011 at 3:58pm CDT

Lyle Overbay has cleared waivers and hit free agency, according to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch (on Twitter). The Pirates had designated him for assignment at the end of July.

Overbay signed a one-year $5MM contract with the Pirates in the offseason, but didn't produce as well as expected in his return to the National League. After reaching the 20 homer plateau for the second time in his career last year and posting a .243/.329/.433 line, the 34-year-old added just eight homers for Pittsburgh, posting a .227/.300/.349 line.

Quick Hits: Mets, Overbay, Springer, Storen, Stewart

By Tim Dierkes | August 1, 2011 at 10:24pm CDT

Thanks to our loyal readers, MLBTR generated 3.1 million pageviews over the weekend!  We appreciate you making MLBTR a regular stop, and have a lot of cool things planned in the coming months.  On to today's links…

  • Mets GM Sandy Alderson told ESPN New York's Adam Rubin that he tried to acquire a reliever before the deadline, but to no avail (Twitter link). He would not rule out a trade before August 31st.
  • The Red Sox will not have interest in Lyle Overbay, reports Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe (on Twitter). The Pirates designated Overbay for assignment today, and as Cafardo notes, he has great numbers in Fenway Park: .323/.395/.500 in 177 plate appearances.
  • Anthony DiComo of MLB.com (via Twitter) doesn't envision Jason Isringhausen re-signing with the Mets this offseason.
  • The Astros are very confident that they'll sign first-round pick George Springer, but it may come down to the last week, tweets MLB.com's Alyson Footer.  Last week we learned that Springer's father met with the independent league Long Island Ducks.
  • ESPN's Jerry Crasnick names a bunch of waiver trade candidates in his latest article.
  • The Twins wanted closer Drew Storen and minor league second baseman Stephen Lombardozzi for center fielder Denard Span, and the Nationals declined, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson.  I think that would have been a solid deal for Washington.
  • The Indians announced they signed infielder Argenis Reyes to a minor league deal; he'd been playing independent ball.  In slightly more important news, Ubaldo Jimenez will debut for the Tribe Friday in Texas.
  • The extent of Boston's interest in Ubaldo?  Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald says exec Allard Baird put in a call on Thursday and the Red Sox weren't in touch after that.
  • Both sides have denounced the $30MM figure that was floated for Dylan Bundy, tweets MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli.  Talks are expected to start this week for the Orioles' fourth overall pick.  Ghiroli has more on the topic here.  Bundy is advised by Jay Franklin at BBI Sports Group; the company also employs his father.
  • The Rockies were close to trading third baseman Ian Stewart to an undisclosed National League team yesterday, reports Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, but the deal fell apart with a half hour to go.
  • The Mariners and Red Sox are sharing the costs of Erik Bedard's incentives, reports Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times.
  • Newly-acquired players Zack Wheeler and Jonathan Singelton head updated top ten prospects lists for the Mets and Astros, courtesy of Baseball America's Jim Callis.

Pirates Designate Lyle Overbay For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes | August 1, 2011 at 1:06pm CDT

The Pirates will designate first baseman Lyle Overbay for assignment, reports Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.  The Pirates have since confirmed the move.  Overbay homered yesterday, but it wasn't enough to save his job with the team acquiring Derrek Lee.

Overbay, 34, has a .227/.300/.349 line in 391 plate appearances this year.  He signed a $5MM deal in December, which seemed a bit high at the time.
