Minor MLB Transactions: 4/14/18

The latest minor league moves from around baseball….

Newest Moves:

  • The Rangers signed infielder Nick Noonan to a minor league deal, according to team executive VP of communication John Blake (Twitter link).  Noonan has been assigned to Triple-A Round Rock.  Noonan was selected 32nd overall in the 2007 draft by the Giants and has appeared in 83 Major League games (with San Francisco and San Diego) as he begins his 12th pro season.  The 28-year-old has a .267/.319/.373 slash line over 4497 minor league PA, plus extensive playing time as a second baseman, third baseman, and shortstop, so he’ll provide some extra depth for a Texas club that has lost Elvis Andrus and Rougned Odor to the disabled list.

  • The Nationals have officially released Miguel Montero, SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweets.  The veteran catcher was designated for assignment earlier this week. He signed a minor league contract with the Nats over the offseason and ended up appearing in four games with the team, filling in as Washington dealt with some catching injuries.
  • With Montero now gone, the Nationals added some minor league catching depth by inking Tuffy Gosewisch to a minors deal, as per the team’s MLB.com transactions page. Gosewisch was released by the Mariners in early April after re-signing with the organization on a new minor league deal over the offseason. Gosewisch appeared in just 11 big league games with Seattle last season, but received 369 PA as a backup catcher with the D’Backs from 2014-16.

Marlins Acquire Nick Noonan From Brewers

The Marlins have added infielder Nick Noonan to their Triple-A club, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald (on Twitter). MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro further tweets that Noonan was acquired from the Brewers in exchange for cash.

The addition of Noonan, 28, comes at a time when the Marlins’ infield has been ravaged by injuries. Martin Prado, Adeiny Hechavarria and Miguel Rojas have each landed on the disabled list between Monday and Wednesday this week, prompting the Fish to bring up J.T. Riddle and Stephen Lombardozzi from Triple-A. Noonan figures to receive some of the playing time that Riddle and Lombardozzi would’ve been in line for in New Orleans. With further injuries in the Majors and/or impressive play in Triple-A, he could conceivably see some big league time as well.

Noonan, after all, has logged MLB time in each of the past two seasons (and in three of the past four). He was with the Padres in 2016 and the Giants (who drafted and developed him) in 2015 and 2013. Once considered one of the best prospects in the Giants’ farm system, Noonan has yet to capitalize on multiple promotions to the Majors, hitting .193/.239/.234 in 155 plate appearances between San Francisco and San Diego. He’s been better in Triple-A, where he’s managed a .273/.321/.371 batting line in parts of seven seasons.

Here are the day’s minor moves, courtesy of Baseball America’s Matt Eddy:

  • The Marlins added infielder Steve Lombardozzi on a minors deal. He’ll serve as infield depth but doesn’t figure to have much of a shot at cracking the Opening Day roster. Lombardozzi, 28, last appeared in the majors in 2015. He split last year between the independent leagues and the Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate.
  • Another former MLB infielder, 27-year-old Nick Noonan, is headed to the Brewers on a minors pact. He has a fair bit less major league time than does Lombardozzi, but was able to reach the bigs last year with the Padres. Noonan spent most of the season at Triple-A, slashing .301/.338/.427 over 374 plate appearances.
  • The Padres have inked righty Justin De Fratus to a minor-league arrangement. He’s looking to make it back to the majors after spending a portion of 2016 in the upper minors in the Nationals organization. De Fratus, 29, worked to a 5.23 ERA with 7.8 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 over 20 2/3 innings.
  • Righty Caleb Cotham has agreed to a minor-leaguedeal with the Mariners. He scuffled to a 7.15 ERA in 34 MLB innings over the past two seasons, but has shown more in the past in the upper minors. In 2015, he worked to a 2.21 ERA with 9.6 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 over 57 innings split between Double-A and Triple-A.
  • The Orioles have struck a minors deal with former farmhand Chris Jones. Now 28, Jones spent the 2016 season with the Angels organization, working to an unsightly 6.92 ERA with 6.1 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9. He had performed better with the O’s, though he has yet to earn his way to the game’s highest level.

Here are the day’s minor moves…

  • The Padres have outrighted infielder Nick Noonan off the 40-man roster following his DFA last week, as was first noted on the team’s transactions page. Noonan, 27, appeared in seven games for San Diego and collected three hits in 18 at-bats (20 plate appearances). That marked his third season with some degree of Major League experience, though the longtime Giants farmhand hasn’t hit enough at the big league level to stick for very long. In 155 plate appearances, Noonan is a .193/.239/.234 hitter. Once considered one of San Francisco’s top prospects, Noonan is a .274/.322/.372 hitter in nearly 1900 Triple-A plate appearances. The former No. 32 overall pick can elect free agency this winter and look for a new organization if he chooses.

Padres Designate Patrick Kivlehan, Nick Noonan

The Padres have designated outfielder Patrick Kivlehan and infielder Nick Noonan for assignment, the team announced. Their 40-man roster spots were needed for the team’s wave of prospect call-ups, which were also made official.

Though he earned his first MLB promotion, hitting well in just five games of action, Kivlehan will presumably find his way to another club after a year of constant change. (San Diego was his third team in 2016.) Kivlehan spent most of the season at the highest level of the minors, posting a .254/.302/.416 slash with a dozen homers in 397 trips to the dish.

Noonan, 27, received only brief major league time this season — his first as a member of an organization other than the division-rival Giants. Over 374 plate appearances at Triple-A, Noonan has posted a .301/.338/.427 batting line.

Here are the day’s minor moves …

  • Infielder Nick Noonan has agreed to a minor league deal and an invite to big league camp with the Padres, according to a club announcement. Noonan, who will turn 27 in May, long rated as one of the best prospects in the division-rival Giants’ farm system. Selected 32nd overall in the 2007 draft, Noonan is a San Diego area native that has batted .197/.244/.244 in 135 big league plate appearances. His work at Triple-A has been considerably better, as the versatile infielder has compiled a .268/.319/.358 line at the top minor league level. He’s logged at least 500 innings at shortstop, second base and third base throughout his minor league career.

  • The Athletics have struck a deal to bring back catcher Bryan Anderson, MLBTR’s Zach Links reports on Twitter. His contract includes an invitation to major league camp. The 29-year-old receiver has appeared at the MLB level in five seasons — including each of the last two with Oakland — but has only taken 77 trips to the plate in the majors. Once a top-100 prospect, Anderson scuffled at Triple-A last year and was outrighted after the season. But he certainly has a lengthy track record at the highest level of the minors: over parts of eight seasons at the Triple-A level, Anderson has racked up 2,289 plate appearances of .253/.327/.384 hitting.

Here are the latest minor moves from around the game:

  • Outfielder Jason Pridie has been given his release by the Athletics in order to pursue an opportunity playing in Japan, Oakland announced. The 32-year-old has seen action in seven big league seasons, but has exceeded ten plate appearances in only one of those — 2011, when he slashed .231/.309/.370 in 236 turns at bat for the Mets. But Pridie had a big year at Triple-A in 2015, putting up a .310/.380/.515 line with 20 home runs and 20 steals over 540 plate appearances.
  • The Athletics also announced that 28-year-old catcher Bryan Anderson has been outrighted to Triple-A. Not unlike Pridie, Anderson has seen action in five MLB seasons but accumulated just 77 total plate appearances in that span. He struggled badly offensively at the Triple-A level this year, slashing a meager .202/.273/.288 in 322 trips to the plate.
  • The Giants have outrighted catcher Jackson Williams, infielder Nick Noonan and righty Brett Bochy, according to the MLB.com transactions page (and as MLBTR has confirmed). The 29-year-old Williams collected 14 plate appearances after being promoted in early September. He spent most of the year at Double-A Richmond, where he hit .228/.312/.279. Noonan, too, was a September call-up. He spent the first several months of the season with the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate before the Giants signed him in August and sent him to Triple-A Sacramento. For the season, the 26-year-old hit .263/.310/.338 in 339 plate appearances in the minors, mostly playing shortstop. He’s already cleared waivers and elected free agency. Bochy, the son of Giants manager Bruce, got a cup of coffee in the big leagues for the second consecutive year in 2015. The 28-year-old spent most of the season in Sacramento, posting a 4.19 ERA, 6.7 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 58 innings of relief.

Giants Designate Justin Maxwell For Assignment

The Giants announced that they have designated outfielder Justin Maxwell for assignment in order to clear space on the 40-man roster for September callup Nick Noonan.

Maxwell, 31, batted .209/.275/.341 in 274 plate appearances with the Giants this year. He’s soaked up a number innings in the outfield as San Francisco has dealt with injuries to its entire starting outfield — Hunter Pence, Angel Pagan and Nori Aoki. Maxwell is capable of playing all three outfield spots and is a particularly good defender in the corner outfield positions. As Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area tweets, the move is at least somewhat surprising, as the team could’ve transferred Tim Lincecum to the 60-day disabled list. Lincecum has been on the DL since late June.

Here are today’s minor moves …

  • The Giants have signed infielder Nick Noonan to a minor league deal, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area tweets. Noonan played at the Triple-A level for the Yankees this year, but spent his first eight professional seasons in the San Francisco organization. Since cracking the big leagues with the Giants back in 2013, Noonan has produced mediocre results at the plate while playing at the highest level of the minors.
  • Catcher George Kottaras has joined the Blue Jays on a minor league deal, according to an announcement from the club’s Triple-A affiliate. The 32-year-old had seen big league action for seven straight seasons heading into this one — suiting up for three organizations last year alone — but hasn’t seen an MLB opportunity yet with the White Sox organization. Kottaras has hit well in limited action this year, though, and is a .215/.326/.411 hitter in 858 big league plate appearances.

Minor Moves: Villarreal, Noonan, Rangers

Here are today’s minor transactions, with the newest moves at the top of the post…

  • The Twins have signed right-hander Brayan Villarreal to a split contract, ESPN’s Enrique Rojas reports (via Twitter).  The deal contains an invitation to Minnesota’s Spring Training camp and Villarreal will earn $522K if he stays on the Twins’ Major League roster.  Villarreal last pitched in the majors in 2013 and spent last season with the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate.
  • The Yankees signed infielder Nick Noonan to a minor league deal, the New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports (Twitter link).  Noonan, taken 32nd overall by the Giants in the 2007 draft, has a .262/.316/.368 slash line over 3322 career PA in the minors, all in San Francisco’s farm system.  He appeared in 62 games with the Giants in 2013.
  • The Rangers signed outfielder Antoan Richardson and right-handers Anthony Bass and Ross Wolf to minor league deals with Spring Training invitations, the team announced (hat tip to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram).
  • The Marlins are likely to sign free agent infielder Scott Sizemore, SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweets.  Sizemore signed a minor league deal with the Yankees last winter and played in six games for the club before being released and re-signed over the summer.  Due in part to a pair of major knee injuries, Sizemore has only appeared in eight Major League games over the last three seasons.
  • The Brewers have released outfielder Jeremy Hermida so he can pursue an opportunity to play in Japan, the team announced.  Hermida just signed a new minor league contract with Milwaukee in November.  The former 11th overall pick (in the 2002 draft) and top prospect last played in the majors in 2012 as a member of the Padres.
