Marlins Release Severino Gonzalez, Sean Burnett

By Steve Adams | June 20, 2018 at 8:16am CDT

The Marlins have released right-hander Severino Gonzalez and veteran left-hander Sean Burnett from their Triple-A affiliate in New Orleans, as first tweeted by the club’s Triple-A broadcaster, Tim Grubbs.

Gonzalez, 25, spent a day on the Marlins’ active roster in early April after having his contract selected from New Orleans, but his addition was purely a depth move, it seems. Gonzalez didn’t get into the game in his lone day on the roster, and he was designated for assignment the next day. He ultimately accepted an outright assignment back to New Orleans, where he went on to struggle for much of the season.

In 33 2/3 innings out of the bullpen this season, Gonzalez has stumbled with a 5.61 ERA and similarly discouraging peripheral metrics. Never one to miss many bats, Gonzalez has averaged 6.1 K/9 so far in 2018, and his typical otherworldly control has taken a step back. While his 2.4 BB/9 mark is still strong, it’s also a bit of a step back from the career 1.8 mark he’d posted at the Triple-A level prior to 2018. The real problem for Gonzalez, however, was the long ball; he’d previously been stingy in that regard but has been hammered for seven homers in his 33 2/3 frames. The former Phillies prospect does have strong K/BB numbers in 66 Major League innings (all with Philadelphia), but he’s nonetheless logged a 6.68 ERA as a big leaguer.

As for Burnett, the 35-year-old veteran has appeared in parts of nine Major League seasons and had a nice peak from 2009-12 as an excellent setup man for the Pirates and Nationals before undergoing Tommy John surgery after signing a two-year deal with the Angels. Burnett has continued to grind since injuries ruined his two-year stint with the Halos, and he briefly resurfaced in the Majors with the 2016 Nats.

He didn’t pitch in the Majors or minors in 2017, and while his 5.49 ERA in 19 2/3 innings this season looks ugly, there’s still some reason to believe he could have something left in the tank. Burnett notched an outstanding 23-to-5 K/BB ratio in those 19 2/3 innings, allowing just two homers along the way and registering a 48.4 percent ground-ball rate. And while he allowed far too many hits in New Orleans (30, to be exact), he was also plagued by a sky-high .452 average on balls in play. Burnett punched out nine of the 25 lefties he faced (36 percent) without allowing a walk, so perhaps a club could view him as a potential situational lefty at the very least.

Marlins Outright Severino Gonzalez, Austin Nola

By Jeff Todd | April 5, 2018 at 10:27am CDT

The Marlins announced this morning that they have outrighted righty Severino Gonzalez and catcher Austin Nola to Triple-A. Both players cleared waivers after recently being designated for assignment.

In other moves, the Fish put outfielder/first baseman Garrett Cooper on the 10-day DL with a right wrist contusion. He’ll be replaced by outfielder Braxton Lee, who was recalled.

Gonzalez was brought up for only a single game and did not end up entering. It is not clear whether he has accepted the assignment, but he would have the right instead to elect free agency. Gonzalez owns a 6.68 ERA in his 66 career frames in the majors, all with the Phillies in 2015 and 2016, but did manage 8.5 K/9 against 1.9 BB/9 in that span.

As for Nola, the 28-year-old has played all over the infield, including behind the dish, making him an interesting potential asset. But he has never really advanced with the bat. In 750 career Triple-A plate appearances, he carries only a .259/.320/.353 batting line.

Marlins Designate Severino Gonzalez For Assignment

By Steve Adams | April 2, 2018 at 2:04pm CDT

The Marlins announced that they’ve designated right-hander Severino Gonzalez for assignment to clear a spot on the roster for right-handed pitching prospect Trevor Richards, who will make his MLB debut and start tonight’s game against the Red Sox.

Gonzalez’s stint with the Marlins will last just one day. Miami selected his contract yesterday to provide some pitching depth, but Gonzalez didn’t get into the game and now won’t have the opportunity to do so in the near future. The Marlins will have seven days to trade Gonzalez or place him on outright waivers. Because Gonzalez has already been outrighted once in his career, he’d have the right to elect free agency if he does pass through waivers unclaimed.

The former Phillies prospect has an unsightly 6.68 ERA in 66 big league innings — albeit with a considerably more impressive 62-to-14 K/BB ratio. Gonzalez hasn’t posted especially impressive ERA marks in the minors, but he’s long displayed very strong control numbers as he’s ascended through the minor league ranks.

Both MLB.com and Baseball America ranked the 24-year-old Richards as Miami’s No. 22 prospect. In 146 innings between Class-A Advanced and Double-A last season, Richards worked to a pristine 2.53 ERA with 9.7 K/9 against 1.8 BB/9 with a ground-ball rate well north of 50 percent. Both scouting reports on Richards peg him as a consistent strike-thrower who’ll pound the zone without overpowering stuff, and each suggests that he could settle in either as a back-of-the-rotation starter or a long reliever.

Marlins Designate Brian Ellington, Select Severino Gonzalez

By Connor Byrne | April 1, 2018 at 9:08am CDT

The Marlins have designated right-handed reliever Brian Ellington for assignment and selected the contract of fellow righty Severino Gonzalez, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.

The flamethrowing Ellington logged significant innings with the Marlins from 2015-17 (a combined 102 2/3) and adeptly prevented runs over his first two years, during which he compiled a 2.64 ERA. That figure came with less enticing peripherals, though, and Ellington crashed to earth last season. The 27-year-old recorded a 7.25 ERA/5.80 FIP with 9.67 K/9, 7.05 BB/9 and a 35.4 percent groundball rate across 44 2/3 innings. He then dealt with biceps tendinitis during spring training, leading the Marlins to send him to Triple-A to open 2018.

Now 25, Gonzalez was once a well-regarded prospect with the Phillies, who dealt him to the Marlins in a small trade over the winter. Gonzalez spent the 2017 season in the minors (mostly Double-A) and posted a 4.82 ERA with 6.3 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 in 80 1/3 innings. He worked out of the Phillies’ bullpen from 2015-16 and yielded a 6.68 ERA across 66 frames, though he did manage strong strikeout and walk rates (8.45 K/9, 1.91 BB/9).

Minor MLB Transactions: 2/18/18

By Connor Byrne | February 18, 2018 at 4:31pm CDT

The latest minor moves from around baseball:

  • The Marlins have outrighted right-hander Severino Gonzalez, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com tweets. Miami acquired Gonzalez from Philadelphia in a minor trade last month. The 25-year-old spent the 2017 season in the minors (mostly Double-A) and recorded a 4.82 ERA with 6.3 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 in 80 1/3 innings. Gonzalez worked out of the Phillies’ bullpen from 2015-16 and yielded a 6.68 ERA across 66 frames, despite strong strikeout and walk rates (8.45 K/9, 1.91 BB/9).

Marlins Acquire Severino Gonzalez

By Jeff Todd | January 24, 2017 at 1:48pm CDT

The Marlins have acquired righty Severino Gonzalez from the Phillies, per a team announcement. Philadelphia will receive a player to be named later or cash considerations in the deal.

Gonzalez had been designated for assignment recently to clear roster space for the signing of Michael Saunders. Now, he’ll head to the Phils’ N.L. East rivals in Miami, who have already accumulated quite a few other pitchers over the winter. Gonzalez is still optionable, which increases his appeal.

The 24-year-old Gonzalez has shown intriguing K/BB numbers in his 66 MLB frames (8.5 K/9 against 1.9 BB/9), but he owns an ugly 6.68 ERA. He has always shown excellent control in the minors, and did boast 35 strikeouts and a 3.13 ERA over his 36 innings last year at Triple-A after shifting to a full-time relief role.

Phillies Designate Severino Gonzalez For Assignment

By Steve Adams | January 19, 2017 at 1:25pm CDT

The Phillies announced on Thursday that they’ve designated right-hander Severino Gonzalez for assignment to clear space on the 40-man roster for outfielder Michael Saunders, whose one-year deal with the team is now official.

Gonzalez, 24, has spent parts of the past two seasons in Philadelphia but has been unable to replicate his minor league results at the Major League level. The Panamanian hurler has pitched to a 6.68 ERA in 66 big league innings, though his 8.5 K/9 rate and 1.9 BB/9 rate are both impressive. Gonzalez has never missed that many bats over a much larger sample of work in the minors, though, and as an extreme fly-ball pitcher spending half his games in the cozy confines of Citizens Bank Park, he’s been particularly susceptible to the long ball (career 1.9 HR/9).

In the minors, excellent control has long been Gonzalez’s calling card. He’s averaged just 1.5 walks per nine innings pitched since being signed as an amateur back in 2011, and he turned in a very nice year between Double-A and Triple-A in 2016. Across those two levels last year, Gonzalez posted a 3.13 ERA with a 35-to-8 K/BB ratio in 36 innings, with all but one of his appearances coming out of the bullpen. That marked a change for Gonzalez, who worked exclusively as a starting pitcher in both 2014 and 2015.

Gonzalez does have a minor league option remaining, so if he lands on another club — be it by trade or by waiver claim — that team can stash him in the minor leagues without having to first expose him to outright waivers.
