Marlins Designate Brett de Geus For Assignment

By Nick Deeds | March 30, 2025 at 9:22am CDT

The Marlins have designated right-hander Brett de Geus for assignment, the team announced this morning. Right-hander Xzavion Curry’s contract was selected to replace de Geus on the 40-man roster, and righty Valente Bellozo was optioned to make room for Curry on the active roster.

de Geus, 27, was drafted by the Dodgers in the 33rd round back in 2017 but made his big league debut with the Rangers in 2021 after being selected in that offseason’s Rule 5 draft. The right-hander split the 2021 campaign between Texas and Arizona, struggling to an ugly 7.56 ERA in 50 innings of work along the way. He struck out just 17.2% of opponents while walking 10.5%, and after making it through the full 2021 campaign on a big league roster de Geus found himself shuttled back to the minors for the early part of the 2022 campaign before he was released by Arizona in June of that same year.

After spending a couple of seasons in indy ball and a brief stint in the Royals farm system, de Geus resurfaced with the Mariners last season. He once again struggled badly at the big league level, with a 7.15 ERA in 11 1/3 innings of work spread between Seattle, Toronto, and Miami. He finished the 2024 season with the Blue Jays but was designated for assignment by the club back in January. The righty was traded to Pittsburgh in a cash deal shortly thereafter but was once against DFA’d early on in Spring Training.

That led the Marlins to claim him off waivers late last month, and while he survived the club’s initial roster moves for Opening Day he’s now been DFA’d once again to make room for a fresh arm at the big league level. Going forward, the Marlins will have one week to either trade de Geus or attempt to pass him through waivers. If he goes through waivers unclaimed, they’ll have the opportunity to outright him to the minors as a non-roster depth option.

As for Curry, the 26-year-old was a 7th round pick by Cleveland back in 2019 and made his big league debut for the Guardians in 2022. That debut was just two spot starts where he surrendered seven runs (six earned) in 9 1/3 innings of work, but Curry got a larger audition in 2023 and proved to be a serviceable swingman for the club. In 95 innings of work spread between nine starts and 32 relief appearances, Curry posted a 4.07 ERA (104 ERA+) with a FIP of 4.50. Though he struck out just 16.6% of his opponents, he walked just 7.4% and avoided an outsized home run total in order to put up decent numbers.

Things came off the rails for Curry in 2024, however, as he surrendered a 5.84 ERA and 5.19 FIP in 24 2/3 innings of work with the Guardians before being designated for assignment in August. He was plucked off waivers by the Marlins and pitched well for the club down the stretch, however, with a 3.00 ERA and 4.22 FIP over his final 18 innings of work last year. That performance wasn’t enough to convince the Marlins to keep him on their 40-man roster all winter, as he was outrighted to the minors last month. He’s back on the 40-man now, however, and figures to provide length out of the bullpen for the club after yesterday’s extra-inning affair against the Pirates.

Marlins Notes: Hill, Cabrera, Morlando

By Anthony Franco | March 13, 2025 at 11:37pm CDT

Derek Hill has seemingly pulled ahead of Dane Myers for the Marlins starting center field job, writes Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald. Both players have put up solid numbers this spring, and Jackson suggests they’re each likely to begin the year on the active roster.

Hill, 29, is out of options and cannot be sent down without going on waivers. The former first-round pick has bounced around the waiver wire for the past couple seasons. Miami claimed the speedster last August. Hill hit .234/.259/.402 with four homers through 114 plate appearances. He showed decent pop but struck out 39 times while drawing only two walks. Hill’s plate discipline has been an issue throughout his career. He’s a .233/.276/.353 hitter with a 30% strikeout rate in 476 big league plate appearances.

Myers has better numbers in a smaller sample. The 29-year-old has a .265/.315/.407 slash through 178 trips to the plate. That’d be difficult to sustain unless he improves upon a 30.9% strikeout rate. Myers still has an option remaining, so the Marlins could send him to Triple-A. His ability to play all three outfield positions would give him a good chance to stick as a fourth outfielder even if he loses the center field camp battle.

Hill has hit .259/.375/.481 with five walks and seven strikeouts in nine games this spring. He has connected on a pair of home runs. Myers is hitting .300/.481/.300 with seven walks and strikeouts apiece over nine contests. He doesn’t have an extra-base hit yet.

The Marlins have very little certainty in their position player group. Right fielder Jesús Sánchez and shortstop Xavier Edwards are the only two players who should have lineup spots secured even if they get out to slow starts. There’s more stability in the rotation. Sandy Alcantara, Ryan Weathers, Max Meyer, Cal Quantrill and Edward Cabrera entered camp with decent holds on starting spots.

Cabrera’s status could be in question after he left Thursday’s start with a blister on his middle finger (link via Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald). Manager Clayton McCullough downplayed the concern, though this has been a recurring issue. A blister on the same finger sent Cabrera to the injured list in the final week of the 2021 season.

Even if he’s healthy enough to start the season, the 26-year-old righty’s performance could put his rotation spot in jeopardy. Cabrera has been rocked for 10 runs on seven hits (including three homers) with four walks and two hit batters in only 3 2/3 innings this spring. Valente Bellozo, who had a 3.67 ERA but uninspiring peripherals in 13 starts last season, would probably be the next man up. Bellozo hasn’t done himself many favors in camp either, allowing 10 runs on 14 hits (four homers) through 8 1/3 frames.

In other news out of camp, 2024 first-round pick PJ Morlando will not play in the Spring Breakout prospect series. Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports that Morlando underwent an ulnar nerve transposition on his left (non-throwing) elbow on Wednesday. He’ll be sidelined for 8-10 weeks and will begin the season on the minor league injured list. Morlando, a lefty-hitting outfielder, was the 16th pick out of high school last summer. A back injury limited him to one game after the draft. Baseball America ranks him eighth among Miami prospects, praising his offensive upside but writing that he’ll likely end up in the corner outfield or at first base.

Marlins Select Valente Bellozo

By Anthony Franco | June 26, 2024 at 10:35am CDT

TODAY: The Marlins have selected Valente Bellozo from Triple-A Jacksonville, the team announced. In a corresponding move, left-hander Kent Emanuel has been designated for assignment. Emanuel will likely clear waivers and be sent outright to Jacksonville. He has already accepted multiple outright assignments to Triple-A this season.

JUNE 25: The Marlins will select the contract of right-hander Valente Bellozo before tomorrow’s game with the Royals, reports Craig Mish of SportsGrid (X link). He’ll take the ball opposite Brady Singer in the series finale. Miami will need to open a spot on the 40-man roster.

It’ll be the major league debut for Bellozo, a 24-year-old native of Mexico. He signed with the Astros as an amateur free agent back in 2017. Bellozo pitched through Double-A in the Houston farm system. The Astros dealt him to Miami for depth infielder Jacob Amaya in April. Bellozo has split his time with the Fish between the top two minor league levels.

The 5’10” hurler hasn’t had great numbers this season. Bellozo has allowed a 5.02 ERA in 52 innings between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Jacksonville. He has decent strikeout and walk numbers, punching out more than a quarter of batters faced against a tidy 6.7% walk percentage. Home runs have been an issue since he was promoted to Triple-A, though. Bellozo has given up seven longballs in 20 2/3 frames with Jacksonville.

Bellozo has never gotten much prospect fanfare. Eric Longenhagen of FanGraphs gave him a brief mention on his write-up of the Miami system earlier this month, crediting him with a solid changeup but few other weapons. The Fish have needed to dig into their rotation depth this season after being pummeled by injury.

They placed Jesús Luzardo and Braxton Garrett on the shelf last week. That duo joins Eury Pérez, Sandy Alcantara, Edward Cabrera, Ryan Weathers and Sixto Sánchez on the injured list. Trevor Rogers has been the lone consistent presence. Bellozo will be the 14th starting pitcher they’ve used over the course of the year as they’ve cycled through depth arms.

Astros Acquire Jacob Amaya From Marlins

By Nick Deeds | April 6, 2024 at 6:10pm CDT

The Astros have acquired infielder Jacob Amaya from the Marlins, per The Athletic’s Chandler Rome. In return, Rome adds that the Marlins will receive cash considerations and minor league right-hander Valente Bellozo. Amaya had been designated for assignment by the Marlins earlier this week. Per Rome, Houston has optioned Amaya to Triple-A and placed left-hander Bennett Sousa on the 60-day injured list to make room for the infielder on their 40-man roster.

Amaya, 25, was an eleventh-round pick by the Dodgers in the 2017 draft but made his big league debut with Miami last year after L.A. shipped him to the Marlins in exchange for veteran shortstop Miguel Rojas prior to the 2023 campaign. Amaya’s final season with the Dodgers saw him slash a respectable .261/.369/.427 in 133 games split between the Double- and Triple-A levels, but he took a bit of a step back upon joining the Marlins last year.

In 128 games with the club’s Triple-A affiliate in Jacksonville, Amaya hit just .252/.345/.407 (89 wRC+) during his age-24 season while primarily playing shortstop. Meanwhile, his four-game cup of coffee in the majors left something to be desired as he went 2-for-9 with no walks or extra base hits. On the other hand, his struggles in the majors came in an extremely small sample while his solid glove at shortstop helped to carry his subpar slash line in the minors.

Amaya entered the offseason looking like he could contribute in the big leagues for the Marlins at some point this year, though the additions of Tim Anderson and Vidal Brujan this winter left him largely blocked entering the season. After the youngster struggled at the plate both in camp this spring and in the first games of his return to Jacksonville, the club decided to move on by designating Amaya for assignment to make room for infielder Emmanuel Rivera on the 40-man roster.

Now, Amaya will get a chance to re-establish himself in an Astros organization with minimal infield depth in the upper levels of the minor leagues. Houston has Jose Altuve and Jeremy Pena locked into regular roles up the middle with Mauricio Dubon as their top option off the bench, though Amaya could compete with the likes of Grae Kessinger and David Hensley for a role on the club’s bench as a reserve infielder at some point this season.

To land Amaya, the Astros are giving up Bellozo, who made his pro debut with the club out of Mexico back in 2018. The right-hander split the 2023 campaign between the High-A and Double-A levels, struggling to a 5.55 ERA in 110 1/3 innings despite a solid 22.4% strikeout rate against a strong 6.8% walk rate. Bellozo’s results took a turn for the better late in the season, as he pitched to a 1.72 ERA in his final four appearances last season. He’ll look to build on that late-season hot stretch this season in what figures to be a return to the Double-A level.
