Warming Bernabel

Rockies Outright Warming Bernabel

By Charlie Wright | December 6, 2025 at 3:18pm CDT

Infielder Warming Bernabel has been outrighted off the Rockies’ 40-man roster, the team announced. Bernabel has cleared outright waivers and elected free agency. Colorado’s 40-man is now at 37 players.

The 23-year-old Bernabel made his MLB debut in July. He got off to a torrid start, going 14-for-28 with three home runs in his first seven games. Bernabel cooled off significantly after that incredible first week, hitting just .189 with one homer the rest of the way. A concussion cost him a couple of weeks in September. He finished his first foray at the highest level with a 78 wRC+ over 40 games.

Colorado added Bernabel as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2018. He showed a consistent ability to make contact and rack up hits in the lower levels of the minors before running into a roadblock at Double-A in 2023.  Bernabel hit just .225 with Hartford, while striking out at a rate above 20% for the first time as a professional. He posted tepid results at the same level in 2024, but was bumped to Triple-A this past year and performed well. Bernabel hit .301 in 75 games with Albuquerque, earning a promotion to the big-league club.

Bernabel has played corner infield primarily, with the majority of his appearances in Colorado coming at first base. Bernabel has also spent time at DH, which might be a better long-term fit. Scouts graded him as a mediocre to poor fielder, and he recorded -2 Outs Above Average in his brief stint with the Rockies.

If Bernabel is going to find success at the highest level, he’ll need to find a way to impact the ball better. He posted an underwhelming 32.5% hard-hit rate and an 85.4 mph average exit velocity. Bernabel managed just three barrels on 114 batted balls. He did pull the ball at an elevated 42.1% rate, which could help his subpar batted ball metrics lead to modest power, but the home run binge to begin his MLB career seems to have been an aberration.

Rockies Select Warming Bernabel

By Anthony Franco | July 26, 2025 at 1:08pm CDT

TODAY: The Rockies officially announced Bernabel’s selection.

JULY 25: The Rockies are expected to select Warming Bernabel before tomorrow’s game in Baltimore, according to Thomas Harding of MLB.com.  Mike Rodriguez first reported that the 23-year-old infielder was being called up. Colorado has an opening on the 40-man roster after the Ryan McMahon trade.

This is Bernabel’s first major league call. He was on Colorado’s 40-man roster during the 2023 season so the Rox could keep him out of the Rule 5 draft. He hit .236/.282/.367 in the minors that year. The Rockies felt comfortable exposing him to waivers and outrighted him off the roster at the end of Spring Training 2024. He spent last season at Double-A Hartford and has played this year with Triple-A Albuquerque.

Bernabel is hitting .301/.356/.450 in his first 75 Triple-A contests. That looks strong on the surface but is below average after accounting for the Pacific Coast League environment. Bernabel has plus bat-to-ball skills but frequently expands the strike zone. That keeps him from making much hard contact. He’s averaging just 84 MPH off the bat in the minors. It’d be tough to make that approach work against big league pitching unless he finds a way to become a lot more selective.

There’s nevertheless little harm for the Rockies in giving a look to a young player who was once a prospect of some note. Bernabel is a primary third baseman and could step into everyday playing time vacated by McMahon’s departure. He also has experience at first base, where Michael Toglia is hitting .197/.266/.359.

Rockies Outright Warming Bernabel

By Steve Adams | March 30, 2024 at 8:40pm CDT

March 30: Bernabel went unclaimed on waivers and has been assigned outright to Double-A Hartford, per the Rockies’ transaction log at MLB.com. He’ll remain with the organization.

March 28: The Rockies announced Thursday that they’ve selected the contract of utilityman Alan Trejo and opened a spot on the roster by designating third base prospect Warming Bernabel for assignment. Colorado also placed relievers Daniel Bard and Lucas Gilbreath on the 15-day IL, as expected. The former is recovering from spring knee surgery and the latter from 2023 Tommy John surgery.

Bernabel, 21, ranked seventh among Rockies prospects at Baseball America this time last year but has seen his stock drop considerably after a rough 2023 season. After a standout 2021 campaign in which he slashed .313/.370/.499 between Low-A and High-A, Bernabel batted only .225/.282/.367 in 83 Double-A games. A back injury cost him more than a month of the season and quite possibly impacted his performance at the plate as well. BA dropped Bernabel to 27th in a poorly ranked Rockies farm system for the 2024 campaign, noting concerns about his below-average raw power and poor exit velocities.

Bernabel has played third base in all but one game of his pro career, when he logged a brief two-inning stint at second base. Scouting reports credit him with an average arm and enough range to handle the hot corner, but he’s not regarded as a plus defender at this time. He only spent one season on the Rockies’ 40-man roster before being designated for assignment, meaning he has two minor league option years remaining. That, paired with his youth and pre-2023 reputation could create interest from other clubs.

The Rockies will have a week to trade Bernabel or attempt to pass him through outright waivers. He doesn’t have the prior outright assignment or service time needed to reject an outright assignment, so if he goes unclaimed, Colorado can retain him and send him back to the minors (presumably, a second stint at Double-A) without needing to dedicate a 40-man roster spot to him.

Rockies Select Five Players To Roster

By Darragh McDonald and Anthony Franco | November 15, 2022 at 2:57pm CDT

The Rockies announced they have selected five players to their roster in advance of today’s Rule 5 deadline. They are right-handers Riley Pint and Blair Calvo, infielders Warming Bernabel and Julio Carreras, as well as outfielder Brenton Doyle.

Pint has pitched his way onto the 40-man roster for the first time. That was long the expectation after Colorado selected him fourth overall out of a Kansas high school back in 2016, but he’s traversed an unexpectedly challenging path. Pint struggled significantly with his strike-throwing in the lower levels of the minor leagues, and he decided to step away from the game entirely for a point last year. The 6’5″ hurler returned in 2022, splitting the season between Double-A Hartford and Triple-A Albuquerque.

Now 25, Pint spent the bulk of the season in Hartford, working to a 4.64 ERA in 42 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. He punched out a very strong 29.6% of opponents, although his 15.6% walk percentage remains alarming. The Rockies were nevertheless impressed enough with his form to foreclose any possibility of losing him in the Rule 5 draft. He could factor into the big league bullpen mix next year.

Calvo was a 23rd-round draftee in 2019 out of a Florida junior college. He worked 35 innings through 29 relief appearances in Hartford, pitching to a 3.09 ERA. Calvo struck out an excellent 32.2% of opponents, induced ground-balls at a massive 57.6% clip and only walked 7.5% of opponents. Calvo turns 27 before Opening Day and could join Pint in factoring into the MLB bullpen mix in 2023.

Bernabel, the #13 prospect in the organization according to Baseball America, was an amateur signee out of the Dominican Republic before the 2019 season. A right-handed hitting third baseman, he’s shown excellent bat-to-ball skills in the low minors. The 20-year-old posted a .317/.390/.504 line with 10 home runs and 21 stolen bases in 300 plate appearances with Low-A Fresno. He’s still likely a couple years from big league readiness, having just briefly reached High-A, but his rapidly improving prospect status gets him a 40-man spot early.

Carreras, 23 in January, signed out of the Dominican Republic during the 2018-19 international period. Baseball America considers him the #20 prospect in the system, praising his shortstop defense and power potential. He spent most of the year at High-A Spokane, hitting .289/.352/.473 with 11 homers to earn a late bump to Hartford.

Doyle is the #22 prospect in the system, according to BA. A fourth-round pick in 2019 out of Shepherd University, he spent most of the year in Hartford. He posted a .246/.287/.450 mark, connecting on 23 longballs but striking out at an elevated 31.2% clip. Doyle spent most of the season playing center field and has a very promising combination of power and athleticism, but his subpar bat-to-ball skills raise questions about his ultimate role.
