Orioles Have A List

By Tim Dierkes | May 9, 2007 at 2:10pm CDT

Though it appears Adam Loewen won’t need surgery, the Orioles still don’t want to continue too far along with both Brian Burres and Jeremy Guthrie in the starting rotation.  Based on their last starts, Guthrie might be the one who sticks.

VP Jim Duquette has a list of about a dozen trade candidates, and apparently Josh Fogg and Byung-Hyun Kim aren’t included.  Duquette gave us a hint – a player from another team who has fallen out of favor and perhaps landed in the bullpen.  Zack Greinke and Kei Igawa fit the description, but they aren’t getting traded.  Shawn Chacon would hardly help.  Adam Eaton?  Wade Miller?  Jeff Weaver?  Oh yes, Jeff Weaver.  Maybe a little Mazzone could get him right.   Got any other "fallen out of favor" starter candidates?

UPDATE: Michael Gluskin was able to determine a few of the pitchers on Duquette’s radar, after talking to a club source.  The O’s have had internal discussions regarding Jason Davis, Odalis Perez, and Chan Ho Park.

Indians To Trade Jason Davis

By Tim Dierkes | May 9, 2007 at 11:29am CDT

27 year-old Indians reliever Jason Davis was designated for assignment on Monday, so the clock is ticking for Mark Shapiro to trade him.  As a healthy, cheap pitcher with good control, Davis will draw plenty of interest.

Davis would like to return to starting after spending all of 2006 as a reliever.  Like a lot of pitchers, Davis could really blossom in the National League.  He gets plenty of groundballs and can keep his walk rate under 3 per nine.

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer speculates that the Tigers, Blue Jays, Royals, Phillies, Giants, Reds, Braves, and Nationals would all make sense.  His speculation considers Davis a reliever, so you can really open it up to most teams in baseball if you think of him as a starter.  The Marlins, Braves, and Astros all have a need for starting pitching help.  If I’m Davis’s agent, I’m campaigning for him to join Atlanta and try to work his way into a rotation spot.  Of course, for pure opportunity you can’t beat the Nationals.  Somehow, though, I have a feeling that Omar Minaya will snag him just for depth.

Rickey Wants Back In

By Tim Dierkes | May 8, 2007 at 10:43pm CDT

The dramatic return of Roger Clemens has inspired another legendary player. 48 year-old Rickey Henderson wants to try one last comeback near the end of the year.  He’s not impressed with current players, saying they’d be in Triple A in his day.

Could Rickey beat out the worst outfielder in baseball and justify a roster spot, marketing value aside?  I think so.  Why not Rickey instead of Ryan Langerhans or Nook Logan in Washington?  Give the fans something to root for.

Greinke to the Bullpen

By Tim Dierkes | May 8, 2007 at 7:49pm CDT

As Tim wrote the other day, with Luke Hudson and Scott Elarton coming back from the DL, something had to give.  Apparently that "something" is Zack Greinke, who is going to be a relief pitcher for the time being.  How odd.

Greinke looked great in his April start against Daisuke Matsuzaka; since then he’s been mostly terrible with a couple of strong outings mixed in.  I can’t imagine this is anything remotely permanent, but perhaps the Royals are showcasing all of their marginal guys–Hudson, Brian Bannister, Odalis Perez, etc.–to see what they can get in trade.  Heaven knows they have some needs to fill.

Arrivals

By Tim Dierkes | May 8, 2007 at 6:36pm CDT

Sometimes transactions–especially those in the bullpen–are just roster shuffling; other times they tell you more about a team’s future plans, or at least give a fringe-type player a chance to shine and up their trade value.  The last couple of days have seen a flurry of moves, including all of the following players getting called up:

  • Winston Abreu, Nats
  • Tony Batista, Nats
  • Fausto Carmona, Indians
  • Tim Corcoran, D-Rays
  • Matt DeSalvo, Yanks (started last night)
  • Justin Germano, Padres
  • Chris Heintz, Twins (replacing Joe Mauer, sort of)
  • Jon Leicester, Orioles
  • Anthony Lerew, Braves (starting tonight)
  • Kendry Morales, Angels
  • Edward Mujica, Indians
  • Chad Orvella, D-Rays
  • Jason Simontacchi, Nats (making his first major league start since 2004)

At least the Nationals aren’t standing pat.  They’re going to figure out if anybody in the organization can get some outs if it means going through 100 pitchers to do it.

Brewers Trade Bait

By Tim Dierkes | May 8, 2007 at 3:37pm CDT

There’s not a lot of trade rumors on the wire today, so I thought I’d pitch in a few semi-original thoughts.

As most of you probably know, the Brewers have the best record in baseball, largely thanks to great depth and a solid bench.  Ryan Braun and Yovani Gallardo are knocking hard at the door to the big leagues, suggesting that Doug Melvin will soon have some decisions to make.  There aren’t any glaring holes for the Brewers at this point (except for third base, which could be solved by promoting Braun), but there are some players who could find other homes before the trade deadline.

The most likely candidates are Tony Graffanino and Craig Counsell.  Only one will be dealt, but when Braun arrives, one almost surely will be dealt, and that one is likely to be Graffanino.  (Counsell is a better shortstop, and he’s signed to a two-year deal.)  Graffanino arrived via trade from the Royals last year for Jorge de la Rosa, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he brings a similar haul this year: a decent-upside pitcher with no home in his current organization.

It’s also a safe bet that Kevin Mench and Geoff Jenkins will keep coming up in rumors.  Mench has been connected recently with the Angels, and has seemingly been in trade rumors for the majority of his career.  Mench has the more tradeable contract, but Jenkins is the more expendable player: the Brewers currently have three left-handed outfielders on the club, including Gabe Gross, who is probably about as good as Jenkins will be when he cools down.

But if a serious need arises for Milwaukee, neither Mench nor Graffanino is likely to get a deal done.  That’s where the team’s pitching depth is likely to come in handy.  Carlos Villanueva is currently pitching well out of the bullpen, but could start for many MLB teams.  Gallardo and Zach Jackson are both pitching in Triple-A right now, and while Gallardo is by far the better prospect, Jackson has a 3.61 ERA and threw a complete game one-hitter last night.  At number eight on the depth chart, his future may be with another organization.  If everyone is healthy when Gallardo gets called up, Claudio Vargas may end up on the block, as well.

There also may be bullpen arms to spare: Brewers fans aren’t excited about current occupants-of-roster-space Elmer Dessens or Chris Spurling, but there may never be room for both Greg Aquino and Jose Capellan.  The market for Capellan thus far apparently hasn’t done much for Doug Melvin, but things could change as injuries continue to hit contending teams.

As I mentioned above, there are no current glaring needs that would lead Melvin to move any of those players.  Nearly everyone in the organization has publicly said that the team is no longer planning for the future at the expense of the present, so it seems unlikely that, say, Mench would be traded for a couple of Double-A pitchers.   The most likely scenario is that an injury would strike and Melvin would quickly deal from strength to plug the hole.

Brewers fans may be excited at the prospect of being buyers at the deadline for the first time in decades, but as it looks right now, teams are much more likely to call Melvin with an eye on what he has to offer.

Dodgers Need a Third Baseman

By Tim Dierkes | May 8, 2007 at 2:06pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal has a bunch of news and notes, including a bit about the misshapen offense of the Dodgers.  They have plenty of bats and plenty of prospects, but not enough to solve every problem they’ve got.  Rosenthal mentions Morgan Ensberg, Hank Blalock, and Joe Crede as potential trade targets, but rightfully notes that none would make that big of a difference.

The Dodgers recently called up prospect Andy LaRoche, a third baseman, and moved another prospect, Tony Abreu, to third at Triple-A Las Vegas.  So they are at least trying some different things while Wilson Betemit continues to not hit.  Through yesterday’s games, Dodgers 3Bs (mostly Betemit) combined to "hit" 183/291/240, which is barely 80 points of OPS better than Dodgers pitchers!

The move that would solve all of their problems would be giving Nomar Garciaparra a shot back at the hot corner.  Nomar played some third with the Cubs in 2005, but I certainly understand the team’s reluctance to put any more pressure on his body.  But it would be perfect: Nomar at third would open up first base for James Loney, one of the best blocked prospects in baseball, and one of the guys teams will invariably ask about as the Dodgers try to upgrade during the season.

Juan Salas Suspended for 50 Games

By Tim Dierkes | May 8, 2007 at 6:35am CDT

Juan Salas, a Tampa Bay reliever, was suspended for 50 games for violating MLB’s drug policy.  Salas was having a decent year: 3.95 ERA in 15 appearances, though he was walking nearly a batter an inning, and that never bodes well.

Salas is in his first full big-league season, so he probably wasn’t going anywhere, but the suspension does make it harder for the Rays to trade any relief arms that draw interest.  At this point, the only guy who would probably do that is Al Reyes, and while he’s off to a great start, he’s only desirable by comparison to the rest of the Rays pen.

Remember Jeff Sackmann?

By Tim Dierkes | May 8, 2007 at 12:00am CDT

Tuesday marks my 25th birthday, the big quarter century mark for me.  To celebrate I decided to take a breather from both my 9-5 job and blogging for one day.  Guess who else turns 25 on Tuesday?  Yep, my boy Adrian Gonzalez.  Oh and also Enrique Iglesias turns 32, good times.

Anyway, you may remember Jeff Sackmann from such websites as Brew Crew Ball and Minor League Splits.  And a million other outlets – that man is prolific.  Jeff also covered here at MLBTR during my honeymoon, and he’s kindly taking the reins on Tuesday.  He’ll write a few posts in the early morning, and a few more in the afternoon.  Enjoy!

Rosenthal Weighs In On Starter Market

By Tim Dierkes | May 7, 2007 at 10:27pm CDT

Nick Cafardo gave his rundown yesterday; now it’s Ken Rosenthal’s turn.  His thoughts on the current market for starting pitching:

  • He mentions that the Yankees inquired about Paul Byrd, I imagine prior to the Clemens signing.  Rosenthal doesn’t seem to think Byrd will be dealt unless a major need surfaces for the Tribe.
  • The old Jon Lieber for Kyle Farnsworth idea is bandied about again; Rosenthal adds Freddy Garcia as a possibility there as well.  He even goes so far as to say that a healthy Tom Gordon could prompt the Phillies to trade a right-handed reliever like Ryan Madson.  That, I don’t see – is Flash ever going to receive a clean bill of health again?
  • The Angels have the depth, but Bill Stoneman doesn’t have a strong desire to trade young starting pitching.  Can’t blame him.  Hmm, Stoneman would make a good GM Trade Profile now that I think about it.
  • The Twins have depth…but not really.  Ramon Ortiz and Sidney Ponson don’t contribute to any concept of depth, even when the team’s Triple A rotation is better than several Major League rotations.  That situation will sort itself out, with Matt Garza and Kevin Slowey playing major roles.
  • Rosenthal also adds (off this topic) that the Padres could revisit Mike Cameron extension talks if he shows some signs of life.  Any time now would be good, Mike.
