D’Backs Acquire Saul Rivera, Release Howry

By Tim Dierkes | May 17, 2010 at 12:19pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have acquired reliever Saul Rivera from the Indians for cash and released Bob Howry, tweets Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse.

Rivera, 32, has a 0.53 ERA, 5.8 K/9, and 3.7 BB/9 in 17 Triple A innings so far this year.  He's got similar peripherals over 275.6 career big league innings, leading to a 4.05 ERA.  Rivera was released by the Nationals in December (on his birthday) to make room for Brian Bruney.  He later signed a minor league deal with the Indians.

Howry, 36, was signed by the D'Backs to a one-year, $2.25MM deal in December.  In 14.3 innings this year, he sports a matching 3.8 in terms of home runs, walks, and strikeouts per nine innings.  That's not an effective formula.  Arizona's bullpen has a 7.68 ERA in 104.3 innings, so changes were necessary.  Aside from Aaron Heilman, everyone has struggled.

Wow, I know the Braves rocked him yesterday but I didn’t think it would be to the point where he would be out of a job. I doubt Saul Rivera will be an upgrade, although that’s not saying too much when your bullpen ERA is 7.68. If only they did have a bullpen they could be a very good team.

The Braves should trade Wagner for Upton. “Sarcasm”

No exaggeration, Howry was the worst reliever I’ve seen put on a Dbacks uniform.
And I’ve seen some bad, bad pitchers.
He just set a record for most pitches thrown without recording an out.
And 3.8 HR/9! Taking “Home Run Howry” to another level.

Enjoy Saul. He was okay for awhile and then I think we burned him out. He certainly was godawful for us last year and took a turn at Syracuse before finally getting his walking papers for Bruney. Would be truly sad for the Nationals to get used and abused by Bruney while Saul turns into something servicable. Nothing but respect for the guy and hope he pans out for the DBacks.

It’s impossible to be worse than Howry, so I think it’s a good move.

On a side note, who in the hell thought Heilman would be the Dbacks best reliever? Then again, it’s not very difficult to be our best reliever. Rosa’s basically our bullpen ace now, due to his one scoreless inning.

they did this a couple days too late. Saul Rivera absolutely OWNS Chipper Jones. Not sure what the stats are or why exactly but I’ve seen them before and it’s suprising.

I can’t believe the Dbacks signed him after how bad he did with the Giants!
