Odds & Ends: Burrell, Diamondbacks, Oswalt

By Zachary Links | May 29, 2010 at 9:51pm CDT

Some links to check out following Roy Halladay's perfect night..

  • MLB.com's Cash Kruth passes along a quote from Giants' manager Bruce Bochy regarding the signing of Pat Burrell: "The thought of signing him to help us off the bench, give us a right-handed bat, some power, a good threat coming off the bench and help us late in games and maybe play against certain pitchers. Right now he needs some at-bats in the Minor Leagues, and we'll see where he's at in the next ten days or so."
  • The Diamondbacks are leaning towards taking a pitcher with the 6th overall pick in next month's draft, according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert. Scouting director Tom Allison has seen Ole Miss lefty Drew Pomeranz and Georgia Tech righty Deck McGuire in the last few days.
  • The Astros and Roy Oswalt are in an uncertain state of limbo, writes Tyler Kepner of The New York times.
  • The A's knew about Justin Duchscherer's hip troubles before signing him to a one-year deal this offseason, writes Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.  The righty will earn the base pay of $2MM but now will not have the opportunity to earn up to $3.5MM in incentives.
  • Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle speculates as to why the Giants are calling up Buster Posey today.
  • Roberto Alomar is looking for a front office job and would like for it to be with Toronto, writes MLB.com's James Hall.

I believe this answers Henry Schulman’s speculations.

Oh come on. It’s not like it’s exactly difficult to hit the freaking Diamondbacks. Really…

How does that sound even remotely like crying?

I’m just saying that it’s no difficult task to hit the Dbacks. Our pitching sucks, it’s a fact.

          That sounded pretty trollish.

Opposing team fans who don’t want to give credit where credit is due are criers..

This is Posey’s first game this year, Giants have been struggling offensively so they are counting on him…He came through huge!

            Deal!

It’s not me crying, it’s me being realistic.

When Posey has a good game against a real pitching staff, let me know. Then I’ll give him credit. It’s not exactly a big feat to have a good game against us.

I mean, come on dude, your RELIEVER got a hit.

The Dbacks have BY FAR the worst staff in the MLB.

Don’t get me wrong, Posey’s a stud, but don’t get all excited because he crushed us.

Oh we know the D-Backs aren’t a great pitching team, but you have to give Posey credit where its due because he could’ve just had easily buckle under the pressure and gone 0-4. What is great about the Giant’s rookie is that he’s got one of the sweetest looking swings from the right side, although it isn’t built for HR power yet he will develop the power stroke over time. His swing is built for average and because he is disciplined at the plate he will sustain a high average throughout his career.

                  They’re not only “not great,” but they’re one of the worst in the history of baseball.Stolen from a poster on Diamondbacksbullpen:”How bad is it now? Another wretched performance today These are the worst team ERAs in MLB since 1900 (1900-2010). Pittsburgh is lower than 5.50 now: 5.52 2000 Rangers 5.53 2007 Rays 5.54 2004 Rockies 5.59 1996 Rockies 5.61 1928 Phillies 5.65 2006 Royals 5.67 2003 Rangers 5.68 1994 Twins 5.71 2001 Rangers 5.76 1995 Twins 5.79 1939 Athletics 5.80 1938 Browns 5.95 2010 DIAMONDBACKS <– .14 higher after 2 L's in SF – highest ERA in 2010 so far 6.00 1937 Browns 6.01 1999 Rockies 6.01 1939 Browns 6.08 1936 Athletics 6.13 1929 Phillies 6.24 1936 Browns 6.38 1996 Tigers 6.71 1930 Phillies”Posey couldn’t have gone 0-4 if he tried.

Let’s argue about a single-game sample size, yeah? This should go well.

jdub’s post sounds a lot less like crying than 55’s post sounds like bragging. Come on, the Giants haven’t hit anyone all year and set a season high tonight in runs with 12. Against Billy Buckner and three relievers: Carlos Valdez, whom I’d never heard of before tonight; Saul Rivera, who couldn’t make the sorry Indians’ staff; and Esmerling Vasquez, the only one of the bunch who’s shown a hint of effectiveness. I’m glad the Giants broke out; I watch them most days. But I’m not foolish enough to assume the tide has turned and they’re going to start scoring five runs a game now.

Arizona Diamondbacks’ ERA entering Saturday: 5.81, 30th out of 30 teams, nearly half a run worse than the next worst team, Pittsburgh (5.43). And that’s in a league where pitchers hit.

        This was an accidental “like.”

I wouldn’t like that the Dbacks suck at pitching.

I’m not bragging…I’m excited the Giants have our first home grown fielder with promise since Matt Williams.

Doc Halladay earned his PhD in pitching tonight, what a game, good for him. Two perfect games in one season and in the same month, thats a first I believe

It’s the first 2 in the same month in modern baseball, the first and second were thrown 5 days apart back in 1880
