Blue Jays To Sign Adonis Cardona

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 7, 2010 at 9:12am CDT

JULY 7th: Alexander Mendoza of El Nacional reports that the Blue Jays signed Cardona over the weekend (link in Spanish). Ignacio Serrano of El Nacional reports (via Twitter) that Cardona's agent, Carlos Gavidia, says the bonus is for $2.8MM. The Blue Jays have not confirmed the signing.

MAY 12th: Frankie Piliere of AOL FanHouse believes Cardona's deal with the Blue Jays will be for $2.8MM (Twitter link).

MAY 10th: The Blue Jays are close to signing Venezuelan righty Adonis Cardona, according to ESPN.com's Keith Law. The prospect can't officially sign with the Blue Jays until the July 2nd signing period opens. The terms of the deal aren't clear, but some July 2 free agents do sign seven-figure deals. As Law points out, such early agreements do not always hold up.

The Blue Jays have pursued international free agents aggressively under GM Alex Anthopoulos, bidding on Aroldis Chapman and signing shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria.

You shouldn’t settle down with one team. You’re an Adonis. You should be swinging!

This is a nice move by the Jays. As a Red Sox fan it scares me that the Jays are stocking up with some good young talent with major upside under Anthopoulos.

Yeah, I’m loving Anthopoulos. He is a very smart GM and knows how to build this team properly. Rogers have the money and the flexibility to provide us with enough to spend on draft and international signings. This kid is only 16 and we have great pitching coaches in the minors, so we can do wonders with this kid.

Great signings! Now lets see some 3B or OF get signed!

Well we won’t be short on pitching if nothing else, plenty to work with. Wonder if he needs a changeup, we’re good at that :D.

Now, how about going out and signing some of those draft picks AA ?!? Deck McGuire would be nice, Dickie Thon and Kris Bryant too if we have 2.8 mil just laying around for these international guys.

I think we will sign those guys but AA said it might come down to the wire. Who knows, maybe they are fighting over 10,000 or something. I really hope we sign that Bryant guy.
