Giants Eyeing Scott Downs, Brandon League

By Tim Dierkes | July 28, 2010 at 1:10pm CDT

Add the Giants to the teams pursuing Blue Jays lefty Scott Downs, based on this tweet from SI's Jon Heyman.  From the right side, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote last night that they are "investigating" Seattle's Brandon League.

Downs has drawn attention from the Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Reds, Twins, Dodgers, Rockies, and Phillies this month, but the asking price is huge at the moment.  It's been quieter on the League front, though the Tigers are known to be keeping tabs on him.  League holds the added appeal of being under team control through 2012.

Cry about it if he actually makes a trade like that, not before, most of these rumors are not worth the electrons sent swimming across the world to note it.

And most of his trades end up in his favor or about even, few are horribly on the other side, other than the trade that should not be named.

The thing about trades is that you can never ascribe what exactly they were thinking when they made the trade. You certainly hope that the player works out, at least publicly you have to put on that face, but if that is the best the trade market will give you, sometimes you just make the trade and hope for the best.

And my retort to you is that he’s the guy who thinks that Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, Bumgarner are the ones to keep and he did, Posey and Sandoval too. He’s also the guy who has a team on a pace to win 92 games, which won 88 games last season, and which will have this core of young players on the team for the next 3-5 seasons, which bodes well for our chances to compete during that time period.

i agree with you. but sometimes you don’t make a trade when you’re getting a guy like garko. some of the best trade deadlines are when a team doesn’t make a trade at all. and when i see sabean trading for garko i can’t honestly say he was thinking.

I heard about the possibility of Cantu today as well. Kind of scratching my head here. I thought we were looking for an outfielder. So now we have Huff, Ishi and Sandovol for possibilities at 1B along with the possibility of Cantu. As well as Sandovol, Uribe and possibly Cantu at 3B. Ah huh? Sabean, whats wrong with you?

Look at his numbers in the last 4 years. Do you know how useful a dominant LH reliever is in today’s game? Teams are dying for any solid relief pitching. Further, you are getting two draft picks at the end of the season with Downs. God you Americans are so blind.

You’re not getting “a few blue chippers” for a reliever, period. The Type A status is a gift and a curse. If he accepts arb, which is a possibility, then he’s going to get $5-6M+. That is a lot of money to risk having to pay a 35 year old reliever. Silly Canadians.

If the Cardinals offered Pujols straight up for Posey right now I seriously doubt the Giants would accept it. The guy is going to win NL Player of the Month while playing great D at the most hard-to-fill position. It’s impossible to know for sure now, but I’m sure the Giants feel they might have a once-in-a-generation player on their hands right now.

Plus, that’s a laughable trade offer.

In any case, barring an unlikely trade, say, Joe Mauer for Posey, Buster is not going anywhere, he’s their catcher of the future and they have no other catcher even close to being ready.

Bautista, Downs, and & JP Aaroncibia for Posey, Bumgarner, & Thomas Neal. This could put SF over the top in the NL West. Posey’s a friggen stud of epic proportions and Bumgarner aint too shabby either, but SF’s always halfassed it with their offense and this could be a pretty good fix for this year and the next few. Too much?

NO! We would be giving up two top ten prospects coming into this year who both have contributed a lot lately to the Giants plus another decent prospect for a guy who is having a career year, a lefty who becomes a free agent at the end of the year, and a catcher who, even though he has some power, can’t hit for average or play very well defensively. Even though Batista is controlled past this year and Downs is a Type A free agent, giving up both Bumgarner and Posey along with Neal would be overpaying. If we were going to trade Bumgarner or Posey, we might as just go for Fielder (even then I would be spectacle about trading one of them).

I know some of you are having fun here, but Sabean is not going to trade Posey or Bumgarner for a lefthanded reliever, no matter how much some may over-value that reliever. Both Runzler and Affeldt are likely to be back within 30 days, and the Giants feel they have some inhouse options to get them through without overpaying for someone now.

As a M’s fan, we’d like Posey, but they aren’t giving him up. What we need in return would be either a reliever + a young shortstop and/or catcher (not Posey). Maybe we throw in something eles. If the Giants get him, tell him to throw his spiltter constantly, because that pitch for him is very, very good. But our silly pitching staff told him to throw high heat to everyone and that has made him very inconsistant. But he’s a good pitcher, definitely.

People should calm down, most rumors are not from the Giants end, they are from desperate teams hoping to rip the Giants off, you can put Sabean’s head on a stick after he has done a bad trade, not before. After, may of you wanted to trade Linceum for Rios, so perhaps they should look in the mirror.

But Downs is not worth a blue chipper, I would pass at such a cost, and the Giants will too.

Hank Schulman, Giants scribe, tweeted that he has “not independently heard Gs interest in Cantu. They have tried to get him in the past, though.” twitter.com/hankschulman/statuses/19758385345

But as far as I’m concerned, if the Giants are willing to trade away a young LHP to get Cantu, undoubtedly they don’t think he’ll amount to much in the majors. Rotoworld speculated Hacker or Tanner.

I would be OK with such a trade, though I don’t think much of Cantu and I would rather the Giants wait until August, once teams realize that they are not making the playoffs, we might find better deals then, in terms of talent available and in terms of price. Plus, he’s a horrible fielder as well as a horrible hitter, plus he’s already said that he would like to re-sign with the Marlins in the off-season, even if he is traded. Pass.

Cantu = red herring. The real deal the Giants want is Podsednik. Sabean is probably on the phone telling Moore he’s got a deal with Cantu for one of the prospects he’s dangling for Pods.

I don’t see the Giants and the Jays as a great fit here. Their blue chippers are too good and everything after that is too little it seems. The system seems top heavy and then laden with (electric) relievers that won’t fill a need for the Jays.
