Rangers, Phillies Have Some Interest In Guzman

By Tim Dierkes | July 27, 2010 at 1:35pm CDT

The Rangers and Phillies have some interest in Nationals infielder Cristian Guzman, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.  Guzman is able to play multiple positions, and he's hitting .287/.331/.366 on the season.

The problem with Guzman is that he has a cool $3MM left on his contract.  And regarding the Phillies, ESPN's Jayson Stark says Miguel Tejada is their primary infield target.  Tejada has $2.25MM in base salary remaining, with another $250K in bonuses coming if he's traded and reaches 630 plate appearances.

isn’t this guy like a headcase?

Nope – he’s solid if unspectacular. The headcase was our former GM who initially signed him for 4/16 (forfeiting a draft pick in the process) and then re-signed him for 2/16. He’s not worth that, but he is a useful part for a team that doesn’t need him to play every day – and isn’t counting on him for anything more than barely-adequate defense. This is a situation where the Nats might actually pay a team to get a decent (and I mean decent, not top) prospect back in return.

Hmmm… That would be a good pickup so the Phils don’t have to trot out Greg “butterfingers” Dobbs and Cody “can’t hit anything that moves” Ransom to 3rd base every day.

    Dear Philadelphia Phillies:

My car is parked in downtown DC – I’m probably about 20 minutes from Nationals Park. If you make the deal for Guzman by 430 Eastern I can swing by and probably have him there by game time.

Tolls and any speeding tickets are on me.

    Your friend,

Guzman or Mora from the Rox would be a great fill-in player until Utley returns. Should be able to get it done for Vance Worley, though Nats might ask for Mathieson.

As far as a pitcher goes…wish we had Cliff Lee still sure…but I’d also take back Brett Meyers(3.10 era), Gio Gonzalez (3.64 era), Gavin Floyd (3.66 era), Josh Outman (3.77 era),

Outman went for Blanton with prospects….while both Floyd and Gonzalez went to Chicago for Freddy Garcia…ouchhhhhhh! Lee went for scraps, and Meyers walked in free agency…when we could have non-tendered Blanton and kept lee’s contract/signed Meyers to a discounted deal.
