D’Backs Release Bobby Crosby

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 24, 2010 at 4:22pm CDT

The Diamondbacks released infielder Bobby Crosby to create roster space for Ryan Roberts, according to the team. Crosby, who was acquired in the Chris Snyder trade, spent less than a month in Arizona.

Crosby, 30, hit .220/.294/.298 in 189 plate appearances with the Pirates and D'Backs this year. His best seasons came with the Athletics, starting in 2004 when he won the American League Rookie of the Year award. He followed his rookie season up with a .276/.346/.456 line in 2005, but missed considerable time with injuries as a member of the A's and hasn't been able to reinvigorate his career since.

Maybe the A’s should grab him again! Would LOVE to see Crosby in green and gold!

(if my sarcasm is not seen, please forgive me. Crosby back in Oakland would cause me severe pain)

Don’t worry, I’m sure Sabean is on the phone with his agent right now. The Giants have picked up every other cast off so far this year….

Worst of the worst in the AL, haha… sadly I’ve gotta take Berroa. Better slash stats, stole 21 bags… what a sad couple of RotYs… back-to-back no less.

It’s funny to see that in their 2004 rookie campaigns, Berroa and Hideki Matsui had nearly identical slash lines… and then to see how quickly their careers went in opposite directions.

Bocro has to be one of the biggest failed prospects of the last decade. The guy just couldn’t hit, ever.

Not to be a jerk, but when was Bobby Crosby ever good? Even when he won RotY, he had a pretty garbage year. Greinke should’ve won award that season.

The guy’s highest OPS and OPS+ marks for his career are .802 an 111 (and he was never close to either again), and he was never a particularly good fielding SS either.

Home run total, sure… but he hit .239/.319/.426 that year and struck out in 26% of his plate appearances. Home run power from the shortstop position is nice, sure, but not when it comes at the expense of getting on base, speed, and defense.

He won the Rookie of the Year while batting .239 with an OBP of .300.

This guy was destined to crap out.

Maybe Crosby and Angel Berroa should go play in Japan for a couple seasons.

The only surprise was that the DBacks even put Crosby on the roster after the trade. I’d fully expected he (and Church, for that matter) would be DFAed immediately, if not outright released. AZ already has a no-hit UT IF in Augie Ojeda, and Ojeda can actually play some D. All Crosby could do was look decent in a uni.

He is paying a shyte load for a below average defensive catcher, that is hitting .224. Snyder wasn’t an upgrade defensively or offensively for Doumit. And now Jaramiilo and Sanchez are blocked indefinately.

That trade dowsn’t make much sense.

Jaramillo isn’t anything more than a backup catcher and Sanchez will most likely be in the majors in 2012. Snyder isn’t blocking anyone, except Doumit- thank God.

Best cast scenario Sanchez will be in the majors in 2012. The injuries killed his playing time this year. Besides, let’s watch him do some damage against some AA pitching before we get too excited.

Sanchez is legit, I wouldn’t be worried about him as much as other prospects. At the very least he will be a very good defensive catcher.

I think he is a Kurt Suzuki type catcher.

Would you rather have Jaramillo for 400k, or Snyder for $5 mil. I’ll take Jaramillo because Snyder isn’t more than a backup catcher anyway either.

At least Doumit can hit…Snyder can’t hit and isn’t an upgrade defensively over Doumit. Neither are anything special and it makes ZERO sense to have two overpaid players at one position.

I’m sorry, I don’t like that trade for the Pirates other than Ciricaio. Argenias Diaz and Ronny Cedeno are terrible. Ciricaio could be the short term anwer at SS for the Bucs however.

Snyder isn’t an upgrade defensively over No-Mitt? You just lost all credibility there.

Arizona is paying $3 million of Snyder’s contract next year…so they aren’t exactly paying him “shyte load” either.

        Doumit: .726 OPS
        Snyder: .723 OPS
        Jaramillo: .432 OPS

…and of those three – you would rather start Jaramillo? Really?

Never understood what people saw in Crosby, I guess that’s the power of winning a silly award for you. Maybe he deserved ROY that year, I don’t know, but it says more about the rookie talent in the league that year than it does about Crosby.

If you look at his minor league numbers he never really dominated at any level. His advancement had a lot to do with his father (scout in the A’s system) and the departure of Miguel Tejada.

This guy was suppose to be the next Jeter, Garciaparra, etc, when Tejada left. Good luck to him.
